Abstract:We revisit neutrino oscillations in constant matter density for a number of different scenarios: three flavors with the standard Wolfenstein matter potential, four flavors with standard matter potential and three flavors with non-standard matter potentials. To calculate the oscillation probabilities for these scenarios one must determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians. We use a method for calculating the eigenvalues that is well known, determination of the zeros of determinant of matrix $(\lambda I -H)$, where H is the Hamiltonian, I the identity matrix and $\lambda$ is a scalar. To calculate the associated eigenvectors we use a method that is little known in the particle physics community, the calculation of the adjugate (transpose of the cofactor matrix) of the same matrix, $(\lambda I -H)$. This method can be applied to any Hamiltonian, but provides a very simple way to determine the eigenvectors for neutrino oscillation in matter, independent of the complexity of the matter potential. This method can be trivially automated using the Faddeev-LeVerrier algorithm for numerical calculations. For the above scenarios we derive a number of quantities that are invariant of the matter potential, many are new such as the generalization of the Naumov-Harrison-Scott identity for four or more flavors of neutrinos. We also show how these matter potential independent quantities become matter potential dependent when off-diagonal non-standard matter effects are included.

Abstract:We recently studied neutrinos flavor oscillations in vacuum within conformal coupling models. In this paper, we extend that analysis by investigating neutrino flavor oscillations inside matter within a general conformal coupling scenario. We first derive the general formula for the flavor transition probability inside matter in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes. The modified resonance formula of the MSW effect is derived and the corresponding adiabaticity parameter of the effect is extracted. An application of our results to the case of two-flavor neutrinos within the well-known chameleon and symmetron conformal coupling models is made.

Abstract:The neutrino oscillations in vacuum are derived in a manifestly coherent scheme. The mechanism is operative in a quantum field theoretical framework, justifying nevertheless a formal analogy with quantum mechanical two- (or more) level systems and their oscillatory behaviour. Both the flavour states and the massive states are eigenstates of certain Hamiltonians which, in special conditions, can be argued to share the same Hilbert space. In this scheme, flavour neutrinos are massless and play the role of asymptotic states for any interactions, including the weak interactions, while massive neutrinos are effective propagation states. The vacuum is interpreted as a medium, where the flavour neutrinos undergo coherent forward scatterings which modify their energy and mix their flavour. The treatment of matter conversion and MSW effect fits in naturally; the extension to other neutral particle oscillations, like $K_0-\bar K_0$, is straightforward. The scheme is eclectic insofar as it combines seamlessly quantum field theory and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:A significant part of the present work is devoted to proving that the basic elements of the particle oscillation concept either do not correspond to the principles of classical logic, or violate the energy-momentum conservation law, or contradict the quantum mechanical basis of coherence, or represent a primitive falsehood. Our analysis concerns successively all stages of the formation of the concept from its conceiving to the assertion about the conversion of the solar electron neutrino into a muon one. When discussing a new fundamental interaction, we note the decisive role in the outcome of the processes of changing the handedness of a neutrino (antineutrino) at each act of its interaction with a real or virtual massless pseudoscalar boson, due to which, at the exit from the Sun, the fluxes of left- and right-handed electron neutrinos become approximately equal. Thanks to the new interaction, beta decays of nuclei have a mode with the emission of a massless pseudoscalar boson, at which the antineutrino changes its handedness and becomes unobservable, what is the essence of the reactor antineutrino anomaly.

Abstract:These notes present a critique of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. The design proposal of the MINOS at Fermilab based on a two-mass eigenstate framework may require serious reconsideration if there is strong mixing between all three flavors of neutrinos. For the LSND and KARMEN neutrino oscillation experiments, the amplitude of neutrino oscillation of the "one mass scale dominance" framework vanishes for certain values of mixing angles as a result of opposite signs of two equal and opposite contributions. Recent astronomical observations leave open the possibility that one of the neutrino mass eigenstates may be nonrelativistic in some instances. Neutrino oscillation phenomenology with a superposition of two relativistic, and one nonrelativistic, mass eigenstates is constructed. It is concluded that if the transition from the nonrelativistic to the relativistic regime happens for energies relevant to the reactor and the LSND neutrino oscillation experiments, then one must consider an ab initio analysis of the existing data.

Abstract:Current long-baseline accelerator experiments, NOvA and T2K, are making excellent measurements of neutrino oscillations and the next generation of experiments, DUNE and HK, will make measurements at the O(1%) level of precision. These measurements are a combination of the appearance channel which is more challenging experimentally but depends on many oscillation parameters, and the disappearance channel which is somewhat easier and allows for precision measurements of the atmospheric mass splitting and the atmospheric mixing angle. It is widely recognized that the matter effect plays a key role in the appearance probability, yet the effect on the disappearance probability is surprisingly small for these experiments. Abstract:Due to finite masses and mixing, for neutrinos propagation in space-time, there is a chiral oscillation between left- and right- chiral neutrinos, besides the usual oscillation between different generations. The probability of chiral oscillation is suppressed by a factor of $m^2/E^2$ making the effect small for relativistic neutrinos. However, for non-relativistic neutrinos, this effect can be significant. In matter, the equation of motion is modified. When neutrinos produced in weak interaction pass through the matter, the eigen-energies are split into two different ones depending on the helicity of the neutrino. This results in different oscillation behavior for neutrinos with different helicity, in particular there is a new resonant effect related to the helicity state of neutrino different than the usual MSW effect. For Majorana neutrinos, chiral oscillation also depends on Majorana phases.

Abstract:We show that, in the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, the semiclassical energy-momentum tensor of the neutrino flavor vacuum fulfills the equation of state of dust and cold dark matter. We consider spherically symmetric spacetimes, and we demonstrate that, within the weak field approximation, the flavor vacuum contributes as a Yukawa correction to the Newtonian potential. This corrected potential may account for the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies. In this perspective, neutrino mixing could contribute to dark matter

Abstract:We point out that right-handed neutrinos can resolve the tension between the latest CDF II measurement of MW and the SM. Integrating out the new states yields a single d=6 operator, which translates into a nonunitary leptonic mixing matrix. This alters the extraction of GF from muon decay and increases the prediction for MW , in line with the CDF II result. We find that this explanation worsens the so-called Cabibbo anomaly, which could still be explained through the same d=6 operator if it is not generated by right-handed neutrinos. Abstract:As the increasing of neutrino energy or matter density, the neutrino oscillation in matter may undergo "vacuum-dominated", "resonance" and "matter-dominated" three different stages successively. Neutrinos endure very different matter effects, and therefore present very different oscillation behaviors in these three different cases. In this paper, we focus on the less discussed matter-dominated case (i.e., $|A^{}_{\rm CC}| \gg |\Delta m^{2}_{31}|$), study the effective neutrino mass and mixing parameters as well as neutrino oscillation probabilities in dense matter using the perturbation theory. We find that as the matter parameter $|A^{}_{\rm CC}|$ growing larger, the effective mixing matrix in matter $\tilde{V}$ evolves approaching a fixed $3 \times 3$ constant real matrix which is free of CP violation and can be described using only one simple mixing angle $\tilde{\theta}$ which is independent of $A^{}_{\rm CC}$. As for the neutrino oscillation behavior, $\nu^{}_{e}$ decoupled in the matter-dominated case due to its intense charged-current interaction with electrons while a two-flavor oscillation are still presented between $\nu^{}_{\mu}$ and $\nu^{}_{\tau}$. Numerical analysis are carried on to help understanding the salient features of neutrino oscillation in matter as well as testing the validity of those concise approximate formulas we obtained. At the end of this paper, we make a very bold comparison of the oscillation behaviors between neutrinos passing through the Earth and passing through a typical white dwarf to give some embryo thoughts on under what circumstances these studies will be applied and put forward the interesting idea of possible "neutrino lensing" effect.

Sterile Neutrinos for Warm Dark Matter and the Reactor Anomaly in Flavor Symmetry Models

Abstract:We construct a flavor symmetry model based on the tetrahedral group A_4 in which the right-handed neutrinos from the seesaw mechanism can be both keV warm dark matter particles and eV-scale sterile neutrinos. This is achieved by giving the right-handed neutrinos appropriate charges under the same Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry responsible for the hierarchy of the charged lepton masses. We discuss the effect of next-to-leading order corrections to deviate the zeroth order tri-bimaximal mixing. Those corrections have two sources: (i) higher order seesaw terms, which are important when the seesaw particles are eV-scale, and (ii) higher-dimensional effective operators suppressed by additional powers of the cut-off scale of the theory. Whereas the mixing angles of the active neutrinos typically receive corrections of the same order, the mixing of the sterile neutrinos with the active ones is rather stable as it is connected with a hierarchy of mass scales. We also modify an effective A_4 model to incorporate keV-scale sterile neutrinos.

Flavor Matters, but Matter Flavors: Matter Effects on Flavor Composition of Astrophysical Neutrinos

Abstract:We show that high-energy astrophysical neutrinos produced in the cores of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can undergo strong matter effects, thus significantly influencing their source flavor ratios. In particular, matter effects can completely modify the standard interpretation of the flavor ratio measurements in terms of the physical processes occurring in the sources (e.g., $pp$ versus $p\gamma$, full pion-decay chain versus muon-damped pion decay). We contrast our results with the existing flavor ratio measurements at IceCube, as well as with projections for next-generation neutrino telescopes like IceCube-Gen2. Signatures of these matter effects in neutrino flavor composition would not only bring more evidence for neutrino production in central AGN regions, but would also be a powerful probe of heavily Compton-thick AGNs, which escape conventional observation in $X$-rays and other electromagnetic wavelengths.

Abstract:Neutrino masses and mixings produce vacuum oscillations, an established quantum mechanical phenomenon. In matter, the Mikheev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect, due to neutrino interactions with the background particles, triggers resonant flavor modification. In dense environments, such as core-collapse supernovae and compact mergers, sizable neutrino-neutrino interactions, shock waves, and turbulence impact the neutrino flavor content under a variety of phenomena. Theoretical approaches of neutrino propagation range from the mean-field approximation to the full quantum kinetic equations. Interesting connections have been uncovered between weakly interacting dense neutrino gases and other many-body systems and domains, from condensed matter and nuclear physics to quantum computing. Besides the intrinsic theoretical interest, establishing how neutrinos change flavor contributes to answering the long-standing open questions of how massive stars explode and of the r -process sites. On interplay between flavour anomalies and neutrino properties

Abstract:A minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) featuring two scalar leptoquarks, an SU(2) doublet with hypercharge 1/6 and a singlet with hypercharge 1/3, is proposed as an economical benchmark model for studies of an interplay between flavour physics and properties of the neutrino sector. The presence of such type of leptoquarks radiatively generates neutrino masses and offers a simultaneous explanation for the current B-physics anomalies involving $b \to c \ell \nu_\ell$ decays. The model can also accommodate both the muon magnetic moment and the recently reported $W$ mass anomalies, while complying with the most stringent lepton flavour violating observables.

This work involves augmenting the [math] flavor symmetry model by incorporating two Standard Model Higgs particles into the Inverse Seesaw mechanism. The mass matrices are discussed numerically in the framework of [math] flavor for Majorana neutrinos. We introduced Vector-like fermions and Weyl fermions, which are gauge singlets in the Standard Model and produces Majorana mass terms. We restrict the undesirable terms in our Lagrangian by using additional symmetry. Due to these additional terms, the mass matrices deviate from the tribimaximal neutrino mixing pattern, resulting in the production of a nonzero reactor angle [math]. We found that the atmospheric oscillation parameter ([math]) occupies the upper octant under the normal hierarchy situation. We also study the CP violation ([math]), Jarlskog invariant parameter (J) and Neutrinoless double-beta decay parameter ([math]) in the parameter space of the normal hierarchy model to see whether they concur with the most recent neutrino observations.

Abstract:We present compact analytic expressions for 3-flavor neutrino oscillation probabilities with invisible neutrino decay, where matter effects have been explicitly included. We take into account the possibility that the oscillation and decay components of the effective Hamiltonian do not commute. This is achieved by employing the techniques of inverse Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) expansion and the Cayley-Hamilton theorem applied in the 3-flavor framework. If only the vacuum mass eigenstate $\nu_3$ decays, we show that the treatment of neutrino propagation may be reduced to an effective 2-flavor analysis in the One Mass Scale Dominance (OMSD) approximation. The oscillation probabilities for $P_{\mu\mu}$, $P_{ee}$, $P_{e\mu}$ and $P_{\mu e}$ -- relevant for reactor, long baseline and atmospheric neutrino experiments -- are obtained as perturbative expansions for the case of only $\nu_3$ decay, as well as for the more general scenario where all components of the decay matrix are non-zero. The analytic results thus obtained match the exact numerical results for constant density matter to a high precision and provide physical insights into possible effects of the decay of neutrinos as they propagate through Earth matter. We find that the effects of neutrino decay are most likely to be observable in $P_{\mu\mu}$. We also point out that at any long baseline, the oscillation dips in $P_{\mu\mu}$ can show higher survival probabilities in the case with decay than without decay, and explain this feature using our analytic approximations.
