Effects of long wavelength fluctuations must be checked on a case-by-case basis. As an example we checked the fluctuation effects and showed its irrelevance in a case of K2K experiments.

Abstract:The original paper describes neutrino cooling calculations in the presence of asymmetric neutrino opacities due to parity violation in strong magnetic fields. In early April, through the work of P. Arras and D. Lai at Cornell (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="astro-ph/9806285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9806285">astro-ph/9806285</a>) we became aware that the paper contains a serious flaw: although the neutrino scattering opacities depend asymmetrically on the initial and final neutrino momenta, detailed balance requires that there be no cumulative effect from multiple scatterings in the bulk interior of the proto-neutron star where local thermodynamic equilibrium applies to a good approximation. This paper was therefore withdrawn from ApJ in April. Also in April, we submitted an erratum to ApJ Lett. pointing out this error. (The erratum will appear in the July 1, 1998 issue of ApJ Lett.)

Abstract:The flux of atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos measured in UHE neutrino detectors is strongly dependent on the description of the propagation and absorption of the neutrinos during the passage through Earth to the detector. In particular, the attenuation of the incident neutrino flux depends on the details of the matter structure between the source and the detector. In this paper, we will investigate the impact of different descriptions for the density profile of Earth on the transmission coefficient, defined as the ratio between the flux measured in the detector and the incoming neutrino flux. We will consider five different models for the Earth's density profile and estimate how these different models modify the target column density and transmission coefficients for different flavors. The results are derived by solving the cascade equations taking into account the NC interactions and tau regeneration. A comparison with approximated solutions is also presented. Our results indicated that the predictions are sensitive to the model considered for the density profile, with the simplified three layer model providing a satisfactory description when compared with the PREM results.

Abstract:Recent work on neutrino propagation in stochastic media and its implications for the Sun and core-collapse supernovae are reviewed. It is shown that recent results from Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and SuperKamiokande combined with a best global fit value of $\delta m^2= 5\times 10^{-5}$ eV$^2$ and $\tan^2 \theta = 0.3$ rule out solar electron density fluctuations of a few percent or more. It is argued that solar neutrino experiments may be able to rule out even smaller fluctuations in the near future.

Abstract:Applying TQRPA calculations of Gamow--Teller strength functions in hot nuclei, we compute the (anti)neutrino spectra and energy loss rates arising from weak processes on hot $^{56}$Fe under pre-supernova conditions. We use a realistic pre-supernova model calculated by the stellar evolution code MESA. Taking into account both charged and neutral current processes, we demonstrate that weak reactions with hot nuclei can produce high-energy (anti)neutrinos. We also show that, for hot nuclei, the energy loss via (anti)neutrino emission is significantly larger than that for nuclei in their ground state. It is found that the neutral current de-excitation via the $\nu\bar\nu$-pair emission is presumably a dominant source of antineutrinos. In accordance with other studies, we confirm that the so-called single-state approximation for neutrino spectra might fail under certain pre-supernova conditions. }

Abstract:After decoupling, relic neutrinos traverse the evolving gravitational imhomogeneities along their trajectories. Once they turn non-relativistic, this results in a significant amplification of the anisotropies in the cosmic neutrino background (CνB). Past studies have reconstructed the phase-space distribution of relic neutrinos from the local distribution of matter (accounting for the Milky Way halo and the surrounding large-scale structures), but have neglected the CνB anisotropies in the initial conditions of neutrino trajectories. Using our previously developed N-1-body simulation framework, we show that including these primordial fluctuations in the initial conditions can be important, as it produces similar effects on the abundance and anisotropies of the CνB as the inclusion of large-scale structures beyond the Milky Way halo. Interpretability of data from future CνB observatories like PTOLEMY therefore depends on correctly modelling these effects. GitHub: our jax-accelerated simulation code can be found here.

Antineutrino Opacity in Neutron Stars in the Models Constrained by Recent Terrestrial Experiments and Astrophysical Observations

Abstract:In the present paper, I have investigated a neutral current (NC) antineutrinos scattering with neutron star (NS) matter constituents at zero temperature. The modeling of the standard matters in NS is constructed in the framework of both extended relativistic mean-field (E-RMF) and nonrelativistic Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU energy density functional (KIDS-EDF) models. In the E-RMF model, I use a new parameter of G3(M), which was constrained by the recent PREX II experiment measurement of neutron distribution of $^{208}\rm{Pb}$, while the KIDS-EDF models are constrained by terrestrial experiments, gravitational-wave signals, and astrophysical observations. Using both realistic and well-constrained matter models, I then calculate the antineutrino differential cross-section (ADCS) and antineutrino mean free path (AMFP) of the antineutrinos-NS matter constituents interaction using a linear response theory. It is found that the AMFP for the KIDS0 and KIDSA models are smaller in comparison to the SLy4 model and the E-RMF model with the G3(M) parameter. The AMFP result of the Skyrme model with the SLy4 parameter set is found to have an almost similar prediction to that of the E-RMF model with the G3(M) parameter. Contributions of each nucleon to total AMFP are also presented for the G3(M) model.

Effect of spacetime geometry on neutrino oscillations

Abstract:Propagation of fermions in spacetime requires a spin connection, which can be split into a universal gravitational part and a non-universal ``contorsion'' part. The latter is non-dynamical and can be eliminated from the theory, leaving an effective four-fermion interaction with unknown coupling constants. The generic form of the contorsion-fermion coupling, and thus the four-fermion interaction, breaks chiral symmetry. This interaction affects all fermions -- in particular neutrinos passing through matter will notice a contribution to their effective Hamiltonian, just like the MSW effect coming from weak interactions, but diagonal in the mass basis rather than the flavor basis. Then there is a possibility that this geometrical contribution is not negligible for neutrinos passing through normal matter, provided the coupling constants are not too small. We calculate the matter potential due to this interaction and thus write the conversion and survival probabilities including its effect. We plot conversion probabilities of $\nu_\mu$ to $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\tau$ for a baseline of 1300 km, as well as their dependence on the CP phase, with and without the geometrical interaction. We also plot the survival probability of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ for different baselines.

Abstract:One examines the interaction and possible resonances between supernova neutrinos and electron plasma waves. The neutrino phase space distribution and its boundary regions are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the boundary regions are too wide to produce non-linear resonant effects. The growth or damping rates induced by neutrinos are always proportional to the neutrino flux and $G_{\rm F}^{2}$.

On probing turbulence in core-collapse supernovae in upcoming neutrino detectors

Abstract:Neutrino propagation through a turbulent medium can be highly non-adiabatic leading to distinct signatures in the survival probabilities. A core-collapse supernova can be host to a number of hydrodynamic instabilities which occur behind the shockfront. Such instabilities between the forward shock and a possible reverse shock can lead to cascades introducing turbulence in the associated matter profile, which can imprint itself in the neutrino signal. In this work, we consider realistic matter profiles and seed in the turbulence using a randomization scheme to study its effects on neutrino propagation in an effective two-flavor framework. In particular, we find that the double-dip feature, originally predicted in the neutrino spectra associated with forward and reverse shocks, can be completely washed away in the presence of turbulence, leading to total flavor depolarization. We also study the sensitivity of upcoming neutrino detectors - DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande- to the power spectrum of turbulence to check for deviations from the usual Kolmogorov ($5/3$) inverse power law. We find that while these experiments can effectively constrain the parameter space for the amplitude of the turbulence power spectra, they will only be mildly sensitive to the spectral index.

Abstract:We throw further light on a recently discussed Kerr-Newman type formulation of Fermions and the related cosmological scheme which predicted an ever expanding universe, as indeed has subsequently been confirmed. In the spirit of the correspondence principle, it is shown how the quark picture emerges at the Compton wavelength and the Big Bang scenario at the Planck length. At the same time we obtain a theoretical justification for the peculiar characteristics of the quarks namely their fractional charge, handedness and confinement, as also the order of magnitude of their masses, all of which were hitherto adhoc features.

Effects of Neutrino Trapping on Thermodynamic Properties of Nuclear ``Pasta''

Abstract:Geometrical structure of matter at subnuclear densities is investigated in the presence of a degenerate gas of neutrinos as encountered in stellar collapse. The crystalline phases with spherical, cylindrical and planar nuclei as well as with spherical and cylindrical nuclear bubbles are considered by using a compressible liquid-drop model. This model allows for uncertainties in the lepton fraction $Y_{\rm L}$ in addition to those in the nuclear surface tension $E_{\rm surf}$ and in the proton chemical potential in bulk neutron matter $\mu_{\rm p}^{(0)}$. The phase diagrams obtained at zero temperature show that only the phases with rod-like and slab-like nuclei occur at typical values of $Y_{\rm L}$, $E_{\rm surf}$ and $\mu_{\rm p}^{(0)}$, whereas the bubble phases, especially with spherical bubbles, are at best expected at hypothetically low values of $Y_{\rm L}$ and/or $E_{\rm surf}$. For the rod-like and slab-like nuclei, thermally induced displacements are calculated from their respective elastic constants. It is found that at temperatures appropriate to supernova cores, thermal fluctuations would destroy the layered lattice of slab-like nuclei almost independently of the nuclear models and of the degree of the neutrino degeneracy.
