Abstract:We report on the extraction of the structure functions F_2 and Delta xF_3 = xF_3(nu)-xF_3(nubar) from CCFR nu_mu-Fe and nubar_mu-Fe differential cross sections. The extraction is performed in a physics model independent (PMI) way. This first measurement of Delta xF_3, which is useful in testingmodels of heavy charm production, is higher than current theoretical predictions. The ratio of the F_2(PMI) values measured in nu_mu and nubar_mu scattering is in agreement (within 5%) with the predictions of NLO PDFS using massive charm production schemes, thus resolvin long-standing discrepancy between the two sets of data.

Abstract:Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Abstract:We have determined the structure function ratio $R^d_{\rm EMC}=F_2^d/(F_2^n+F_2^p)$ from recently published $F_2^n/F_2^d$ data taken by the BONuS experiment using CLAS at Jefferson Lab. This ratio deviates from unity, with a slope $dR_{\rm EMC}^{d}/dx= -0.10\pm 0.05$ in the range of Bjorken $x$ from 0.35 to 0.7, for invariant mass $W>1.4$ GeV and $Q^2>1$ GeV$^2$. The observed EMC effect for these kinematics is consistent with conventional nuclear physics models that include off-shell corrections, as well as with empirical analyses that find the EMC effect proportional to the probability of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations.

Precise Measurement of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor from Quasielastic 3he(e, E′)

Abstract:Polarized 3He targets have proven to be a useful tool for studying the electric and magnetic form factors of the neutron, and the spin structure of the neutron. The neutron magnetic form factor at low Q2 was previously determined at MIT-Bates from the quasielastic 3He(e, e′) process. A new experiment is planned at TJNAF to systematically measure the inclusive 3He quasielastic transverse asymmetry, AT′, at Q2 = 0.1−0.5 (GeV/c)2 with high statistical and systematic accuracy. A 2% statistical uncertainty is aimed at all the proposed values of Q2, and 3% systematic uncertainty for AT′ can be achieved for this experiment. The precise data will constrain theoretical calculations of 3He quasielastic asymmetry. Furthermore, the neutron magnetic form factor at Q2 = 0.1−0.5 (Gev/c)2 will be extracted from the measured asymmetries with an overall uncertainty of 2%. Precise measurements of GMn at low Q2 will resolve the discrepancy among the existing data in the same Q2 region.

Abstract:The available world deep-inelastic scattering data on proton and deuteron structure functions F2p, F2d, and their ratios, are leveraged to extract the free neutron F2n structure function, the F2n/F2p ratio, and associated uncertainties using the latest nuclear effect calculations in the deuteron. Special attention is devoted to the normalization of the proton and deuteron experimental datasets and to the treatment of correlated systematic errors, as well as the quantification of procedural and theoretical uncertainties. The extracted F2n dataset is utilized to evaluate the Q2 dependence of the Gottfried sum rule and the nonsinglet F2p - F2n moments. To facilitate replication of our study, as well as for general applications, a comprehensive DIS database including all recent JLab 6 GeV measurements, the extracted F2n, a modified CTEQ-JLab global PDF fit named CJ15nlo_mod, and grids with calculated proton, neutron and deuteron DIS structure functions at next-to-leading order, are discussed and made publicly available.

Abstract:We summarise existing experimental and theoretical knowledge on the structure function $F_2$ in the region of low $Q^2$ and low $x$. The constraints on the behaviour of structure functions in the limit $Q^2=0$ are listed. Phenomenological low $Q^2$ parametrisations of the $F_2$ are collected and their dynamical content is discussed. The high energy photoproduction and nuclear shadowing are also briefly described. Recent update of the low $Q^2$, low $x$ experimental data is given.

Abstract:We report the results of a new measurement of spin structure functions of the deuteron in the region of moderate momentum transfer [Q(2)=0.27-1.3 (GeV/c)(2)] and final hadronic state mass in the nucleon resonance region (W=1.08-2.0 GeV). We scattered a 2.5 GeV polarized continuous electron beam at Jefferson Lab off a dynamically polarized cryogenic solid state target ((ND3)-N-15) and detected the scattered electrons with the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer. From our data, we extract the longitudinal double spin asymmetry A(parallel toparallel to) and the spin structure function g(1)(d). Our data are generally in reasonable agreement with existing data from SLAC where they overlap, and they represent a substantial improvement in statistical precision. We compare our results with expectations for resonance asymmetries and extrapolated deep inelastic scaling results. Finally, we evaluate the first moment of the structure function g(1)(d) and study its approach to both the deep inelastic limit at large Q(2) and to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule at the real photon limit (Q(2)-->0). We find that the first moment varies rapidly in the Q(2) range of our experiment and crosses zero at Q(2) between 0.5 and 0.8 (GeV/c)(2), indicating the importance of the Delta resonance at these momentum transfers.
Low-$Q^{2}$ nucleon structure from an infrared-safe evolution scheme

Abstract:The low-$Q^2$ nucleon structure is given with a simple nonperturbative input of three valence quarks and an all-order infrared-safe evolution scheme, showing some consistences with the experimental data. The resonance peaks in the experimental data of $F_2$ structure function are found to be modulated by the valence quark distributions. With little sea quark distribution at low $Q^2$ the valence-quark bump is clearly shown in the structure function. The three valence quark distributions at the hadronic scale is found to be the dominant origin of the PDFs at the hard scales. The high-twist corrections are needed to explain the sizeable discrepancy between the theory and the experimental measurements at low $Q^2$. The infrared-safe evolution scheme is a powerful tool for connecting the nucleon structures in the nonperturbative and perturbative regions.

Abstract:The elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients in central $^{3}$He+Au, $d$+Au, and $p$+Au collisions at $\mbox{$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$}$ = 200 GeV are measured as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) at mid-rapidity ($|\eta|<$0.9), via the azimuthal angular correlation between two particles both at $|\eta|<$0.9. While the $v_2(p_{\mathrm{T}})$ values depend on the colliding systems, the $v_3(p_{\mathrm{T}})$ values are system-independent within the uncertainties, suggesting an influence on eccentricity from sub-nucleonic fluctuations in these small-sized systems. These results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

Abstract:The $^{239}$Pu(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross-section ratio has been measured with the fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) from 100 keV to 100 MeV. The fissionTPC provides three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles, allowing for a precise quantification of measurement uncertainties. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center which provides a pulsed white source of neutrons. The data are recommended to be used as a cross-section ratio shape. A discussion of the status of the absolute normalization and comparisons to ENDF evaluations and previous measurements is included.

Abstract:A measurement of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-$^{3}$He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of $^{3}$He was performed at Jefferson Lab, for Q$^{2}$ values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/$c$)$^{2}$. The results of this measurement serve as a stringent test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev theory, we found that the Faddeev calculations, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

Abstract:We present the first precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e,e') at Q2 values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)2. The agreement between the data and nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations which include both final-state interactions and meson-exchange current effects is very good at Q2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)2, while a small discrepancy at Q2 = 0.2 (GeV/c)2 is observed.

Abstract:Measuring the region $0.1 < Q^{2} < 1.0$ GeV$^{2}$ is essential to support searches for gluon saturation at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Recent studies have revealed that covering this region at the highest beam energies is not feasible with current detector designs, resulting in the so-called $Q^{2}$ gap. In this work, we present a design for the Few-Degree Calorimeter (FDC), which addresses this issue. The FDC uses SiPM-on-tile technology with tungsten absorber and covers the range of $-4.6 < \eta < -3.6$. It offers fine transverse and longitudinal granularity, along with excellent time resolution, enabling standalone electron tagging. Our design represents the first concrete solution to bridge the $Q^{2}$ gap at the EIC.

Abstract:This paper provides a thorough examination of the $xF_3$ structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering through a comprehensive QCD analysis. Our approach harnesses sophisticated mathematical techniques, namely the Mellin transform combined with Gegenbauer polynomials. We have employed the Jacobi polynomials approach for analysis, conducting investigations at three levels of precision: Next-to-Leading Order (NLO), Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (N$^2$LO), and Next-Next-Next-to-Leading Order (N$^3$LO). We have performed a comparison of our sets of valence-quark parton distribution functions with those of recent research groups, specifically CT18 and MSHT20 at NLO and N$^2$LO, and MSTH23 at N$^3$LO, which are concurrent with our current analysis. The combination of Mellin transforms with Gegenbauer polynomials proves to be a powerful tool for investigating the $xF_3$ structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering and the results obtained from our analysis demonstrate a favorable alignment with experimental data.

Abstract:We propose an experiment to test the hypothesis that the reported anomaly on atmospheric neutrino fluxes is due to nu_mu <-> nu_x oscillations. It will rely both on a disappearance technique, exploiting the method of the dependence of the event rate on L/E, which was recently shown to be effective for detection of neutrino oscillation and measurement of the oscillation parameters, and on an appearance technique, looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energy produced by upward-going tau neutrinos. The detector will consist of iron planes interleaved by limited streamer tubes. The total mass will be about 30 kt. The possibility of recuperating most of the instrumentation from existing detectors allows to avoid R&D phases and to reduce construction time. In four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to oscillations nu_mu <-> nu_x with Delta m^2 > 10^-4 eV^2 and a mixing near to maximal, and answer the question whether nu_x is a sterile or a tau neutrino.

Abstract:The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function sigma(LT') has been measured in the Delta(1232) resonance region at Q(2)=0.40 and 0.65 GeV2. Data for the p((e) over right arrow ,e'p)pi(0) reaction were taken at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. For the first time a complete angular distribution was measured, permitting the separation of different nonresonant amplitudes using a partial wave analysis. Comparison with previous beam asymmetry measurements at MAMI indicate a deviation from the predicted Q(2) dependence of sigma(LT ') using recent phenomenological models.
