Abstract:In terms of SU(2) Yang-Mills field formulism, we give a nature definition of spin current for the systems with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings etc., and we obtain a covariant form of continuity equations for the corresponding spin current [1]. The traditional Kubo formula is generalized to describe the linear response with respect to non-Abelian fields. We find that the covariant form we proposed plays an essential role in guaranteeing the consistency of SU(2) Kubo formula [2]. We also derive the classical counterpart of quantum mechanical covariant “continuity-like” equation for the spin current, and present an intuitive picture for elucidating the non-conservation of the spin current [3]. We discuss the spin-relaxation time for two-dimensional systems with a hierarchy of spin-orbit couplings, and found that the spin-relaxation time can be infinite if the coupling strengths certain condition which correspond to the vanishing Yang-Mills “magnetic” field [4].

Abstract:We investigate the spin excitation spectra in chiral and polar magnets by the linear spin-wave theory for an effective spin model with symmetric and antisymmetric long-range interactions. In one dimension, we obtain the analytic form of the dynamical spin structure factor for proper-screw and cycloidal helical spin states with uniform twists, which shows a gapless mode with strong intensity at the helical wave number. When introducing spin anisotropy in the symmetric interactions, we numerically show that the stable spin spirals become elliptically anisotropic with nonuniform twists and the spin excitation is gapped. In higher dimensions, we find that similar anisotropy stabilizes multiple-$Q$ spin states, such as vortex crystals and hedgehog lattices. We show that the anisotropy in these states manifests itself in the dynamical spin structure factor: a strong intensity in the transverse components to the wave number appears only when the helical wave vector and the corresponding easy axis are perpendicular to each other. Our findings could be useful not only to identify the spin structure but also to deduce the stabilization mechanism by inelastic neutron scattering measurements.

Abstract:The continuum limit of the tilted SU(2) spin model is shown to lead to a gauge Landau-Lifshitz equation which provides a unified description for various spin orders. For a definite gauge with zero field strength, we find a double periodic solution, where the conical spiral, in-plane spiral, helical, and ferromagnetic spin orders become special cases. For another gauge with nonzero field strength, we obtain the skyrmion-crystal solution. By simulating the influence of magnetic field and temperature for our model, we find a spontaneous formation of a skyrmion-fragment lattice similar to the spin texture found in experiment very recently; we also obtain a wider range of skyrmion-crystal phase in the parameter space in comparison to the conventional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya model.

Abstract:We study the model of an Abelian vector field with Chern–Simons term coupled to Higgs field in dimensions and quantize it canonically by using the Dirac–Bergmann algorithm. As an equivalent approach of rotational invariance in the theory, the Schwinger relation is established. We further show the exotic statistics for these configurations and establish a angular-momentum-anomaly connection.

Abstract:Motivated by cold-atom experiments and a desire to understand far-from-equilibrium quantum transport, we analytically study the dynamics of spin helices in the one-dimensional $XX$ model. We use a Jordan-Wigner transformation to map the spin chain onto a non-interacting Fermi gas with simple equations of motion. The resulting dynamics are nontrivial, however, as the spin-helix initial condition corresponds to a highly nonequilibrium distribution of the fermions. We find a separation of timescales between the in-plane and out-of-plane spin dynamics. We gain insights from analyzing the case of a uniform spin chain and from a semiclassical model. One of our key findings is that the spin correlation functions decay as $t^{-1/2}$ at long time, in contrast to the experimentally observed exponential decay.

Two notes on Spin(7)-structures

Abstract:We derive the explicit formula for the intrinsic torsion of a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structure on a $8$--dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. Here, the intrinsic torsion is a difference of the minimal ${\rm Spin}(7)$--connection and the Levi-Civita connection. Hence it is a a section of a bundle $T^{\ast}M\otimes\mathfrak{spin}^{\bot}(M)$. The formula relates the intrinsic torsion with the Lee form $\theta$ and $\Lambda^3_{48}$--component $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ of a codifferential $\delta\Phi$ of the $4$--form defining a given structure. Using the formula obtained, we compute the condition for a ${\rm Spin}(7)$ structure of type $\mathcal{W}_8$ to be (second order) nearly parallel. Moreover, applying the divergence formula obtained by the author for general Riemannian $G$--structure in another article, we rediscover the well known formula for the scalar curvature in terms of norms of $\theta$, $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ and the divergence ${\rm div}\theta$. We justify the formula on appropriate examples.

Abstract:In this thesis I present my research on the exotic configurations of antiferromagnetic systems characterised by a topological invariant. The research presented outlines the construction of novel local antiferromagnetic degrees of freedom for low dimensional antiferromagnetic lattices. This new construction reproduces the real division algebra hierarchy satisfied by the nonlinear sigma-model and reveals the presence of a novel local gauge field. I have also studied elastic magnetic vesicles of spherical and toric genus in the presence of a magnetic soliton. My studies reveal a global shrinking, with local swellings in the regions where the soliton presents a spin-flip. The geometrical origin of this novel phenomena led me to interpret the geometric frustration of magnetic vesicles as the competition between the two topological orders present. The microscopic mechanism and topological competition suggested above go beyond the scope of this thesis, providing a microscopic explanation for the Fermi-Bose transmutation and a way to deal with this type of exotic physics.

Unconstrained Lagrangian Formulation for Bosonic Continuous Spin Theory in Flat Spacetime of Arbitrary Dimension

Abstract:We have discovered two unconstrained forms of free Lagrangian for continuous spin(CS) theory in arbitrary flat spacetime dimension for bosonic case. These Lagrangians, unlike that by Schuster and Toro, do not include delta functions and are conventional. The first form consists of five kinds of totally symmetric helicity fields and one kind of gauge parameter. By introducing auxiliary creation and annihilation operators, each is combined into a state vector in Fock space, including all ranks one by one. The Lagrangian imposes no constraints, such as trace conditions, on these fields or the gauge parameter field. Additionally, the Lagrangian does not contain higher-order derivative terms. In the limit as CS parameter $\mu$ approaches zero, it naturally reproduces a Lagrangian for helicity fields in higher spin(HS) theory, known as unconstrained quartet formulation. Permitting third-order derivatives, we also obtain the second unconstrained form of Lagrangian that can be written in terms of three kinds of fields, including $\mu$, similar to the formulation by Francia and Sagnotti. Partial gauge fixing and partial use of equation of motion(EOM) on this Lagrangian yield a Fronsdal-like Lagrangian with a single double-traceless field, including $\mu$. By imposing further gauge fixing on the field in the EOM with respect to divergence and trace, we confirm the reproduction of the modified Wigner equations already known in literature.

Abstract:The formalism of quantum field theory in operator form, based on the anti self-adjoint operators of the imaginary coordinate and momentum and the self-adjoint operators of the real coordinate, momentum, energy and time, is used in considerations of the spinor fields and related topics. The unitary representation of the Lorentz boosts in the spin-orbital space is given. The operators that mirror-reflect the spin are introduced and then used in discussion of the spin parity. The conclusion that the spin is odd is used in the analyze of the parity violation in the cobalt-60 beta decay and it is found that the parity is not broken. The explanation why there are only right-handed antineutrinos and left-handed neutrinos is offered on the basis of appropriate treatment of the influence of spin on momentum. The inversion of time is treated within the framework of the operators of time and energy and this symmetry is represented in a way that respects the Schrödinger equation and this is done by the Wick rotations of involved operators and vectors of the complexified formalism.

Abstract:Motivated by discrepancies between recent cold atom experiments and the associated theory, we explore the effect of immobile holes on the quantum dynamics of $x$-$z$ spin helices in the one-dimensional $XX$ model. We calculate the exact spin dynamics by mapping onto a system of non-interacting fermions, averaging over the distribution of holes. At small hole densities we find that the helical spin pattern decays exponentially, with a pitch dependence that agrees with the experiments. At large hole densities we instead find persistent oscillations. While our analytic approach does not generalize to the $XXZ$ model with arbitrary anisotropies, we validate a matrix product state technique which might be used to model the experiments in those settings.

Abstract:In this comment, we showed that the Dirac equation in the screw dislocation space-time also carries a term that represents the torsion of such topological defect, given by $K_\mu$. Therefore, the Dirac equation worked by Wang et al. is incomplete since such a term was ignored in your equation (what cannot happen). In other words, it is only possible to work with the Dirac equation in the form presented by Wang et al. if the space-time is torsion-free, which is obviously not the case.

Abstract:We extend a 2d topological model of the gravitational path integral to include sums over spin structure, corresponding to Neveu-Schwarz (NS) or Ramond (R) boundary conditions for fermions. This path integral corresponds to a correlator of boundary creation operators on a non-trivial baby universe Hilbert space, and vanishes when the number of R boundaries is odd. This vanishing implies a non-factorization of the correlator, which necessitates a dual interpretation of the bulk path integral in terms of a product of partition functions (associated to NS boundaries) and Witten indices (associated to R boundaries), averaged over an ensemble of theories with varying Hilbert space dimension and different numbers of bosonic and fermionic states. We also consider a model with End-of-the-World (EOW) branes, for which the dual ensemble then includes a sum over randomly chosen fermionic and bosonic states. We propose two modifications of the bulk path integral which restore an interpretation in a single dual theory: (i) a geometric prescription where we add extra boundaries with a sum over their spin structures, and (ii) an algebraic prescription involving "spacetime D-branes". We extend our ideas to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, and propose a dual description of a single unitary theory with spin structure in a system with eigenbranes.

Abstract:We provide strong numerical evidence, using improved variational wave functions, for a ground state with vanishing spin gap in the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Starting from the algebraic U(1) Dirac spin liquid state proposed by Ran et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 117205 (2007)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.98.117205] and iteratively applying a few Lanczos steps, we compute the lowest S=2 excitation constructed by exciting spinons close to the Dirac nodes. Our results are compatible with a vanishing spin gap in the thermodynamic limit and in consonance with a power-law decay of long distance spin-spin correlations in real space. The competition with a gapped (topological) spin liquid is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we use the so-called spinor-helicity formalism to represent three-vectors in terms of the Pauli matrices and derive a generalized relativistic wave equation for a massive fermion of spin one-half. We thus extend the Dirac equation by making use of the Pauli-Lubański operator that includes isospin explicitly. As a consequence, we get new degrees of freedom related to isospin helicity, in addition to the two standard ones of the Dirac equation that are associated with the kinetic spin-helicity doublet and the particle-antiparticle pair. Formally, isospin helicity has degrees of freedom for an arbitrary general isospin s and has the eigenvalues s and , and thus it reveals a kind of hidden symmetry in any isospin field. The resulting four degrees of freedom for isospin 1/2 are interpreted as being associated with two independent subspaces of dimension 1 related to the U (1) and 3 related to SU (3) symmetry, i.e. to the leptons and quarks.

Abstract:The simplest higher-spin interactions involve classical external currents and symmetric tensors $\phi_{\m_1 ... \m_s}$, and convey three instructive lessons. The first is a general form of the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in flat space for this class of fields. The second is the rationale for its disappearance in (A)dS spaces. Finally, the third is a glimpse into an option which is commonly overlooked in Field Theory, and which both higher spins and String Theory are confronting us with: one can well allow in the Lagrangians non-local terms that do not spoil the local nature of physical quantities.

Abstract:Some theoretical studies using perturbation and tight-binding methods have tried to shed light on the magnetic behaviors of carbon-based nanostructures in the limit of wave vector . In a recent work, we studied a half-filled model of helical carbon chains to gain new insights for . Although in carbon the energy bands are usually derived from partially filled atomic p -shells, here we explore the hole contribution to these magnetic responses. We calculate the longitudinal spin susceptibility of an almost-filled tight-binding model of a helical chain for . We find that when the Fermi level lies at the band edges, the system shows for positive chirality a divergent paramagnetic susceptibility. This result is in agreement with that previously reported for the macroscopic limit .
