Abstract:Starting from a continuum constituted by charged tops, we formulate the classical counterpart of a previously obtained covariant continuitylike equation for the spin current. Such a formulism provides an intuitive picture to elucidate the nonconservation of the spin current and to interpret the condition for the emergence of an infinite spin relaxation time. It also facilitates the discussion on the spin precession in a one-dimensional quantum wire with the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. Furthermore, we derive the diffusion equations for both the charge and spin densities and find that they couple to each other due to the Zitterbewegung.

Abstract:Electron transport through a quantum wire coupled with ferromagnetic leads on a graphene sheet is studied by the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function method. We investigate the dependence of the transport properties on the wire-graphene coupling strength in detail. It is found that the peaks of the density of states fade away and the current is suppressed with the increasing wire–graphene coupling strength. The spin polarized strength of the two leads can effectively suppress the current and the transmission. The results obtained provide valuable theoretical guidance to the spintronics experiment.

Abstract:In terms of SU(2) Yang-Mills field formulism, we give a nature definition of spin current for the systems with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings etc., and we obtain a covariant form of continuity equations for the corresponding spin current [1]. The traditional Kubo formula is generalized to describe the linear response with respect to non-Abelian fields. We find that the covariant form we proposed plays an essential role in guaranteeing the consistency of SU(2) Kubo formula [2]. We also derive the classical counterpart of quantum mechanical covariant “continuity-like” equation for the spin current, and present an intuitive picture for elucidating the non-conservation of the spin current [3]. We discuss the spin-relaxation time for two-dimensional systems with a hierarchy of spin-orbit couplings, and found that the spin-relaxation time can be infinite if the coupling strengths certain condition which correspond to the vanishing Yang-Mills “magnetic” field [4].

Abstract:Spin polarized transport was studied by employing non-equilibrium Green function method, for a model of quantum dot (QD) embedded in a mesoscopic Aharonov–Bohm (AB) ring with magnetic field applied on QD. In comparison with the situation without magnetic field on QD, the average spin occupations separate with the increase in applied magnetic field on QD; in addition, magnetic field on QD has profound effect on the density of states for different spins in QD; on the other hand, the amplitude and phase of transmission for up spin and down spin were found to present novel effects, such as, the additional peak in the phase of transmission. To understand the spin transport in the system of QD coupled to AB ring, the effects of the two magnetic fields imposed on the QD and penetrating the AB ring should be considered.

Abstract:Quantum transport theory and disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model are investigated. The kinetic equations are derived in covariant and equal-time formulations. It is found that DCC is closely connected with the fluctuation of quark spin density. For the longitudinally expanding system, which models a highenergy nucleus-nucleus collision, a DCC present initially is quickly dissolved due to the expansion and the collision processes. However, the quantum off-shell effect leads to a strong fluctuation of DCC.

Abstract:Introducing a class of SU(2) invariant quantum unitary circuits generating chiral transport, we examine the role of broken space-reflection and time-reversal symmetries on spin transport properties. Upon adjusting parameters of local unitary gates, the dynamics can be either chaotic or integrable. The latter corresponds to a generalization of the space-time discretized (Trotterized) higher-spin quantum Heisenberg chain. We demonstrate that breaking of space-reflection symmetry results in a drift in the dynamical spin susceptibility. Remarkably, we find a universal drift velocity given by a simple formula which, at zero average magnetization, depends only on the values of SU(2) Casimir invariants associated with local spins. In the integrable case, the drift velocity formula is confirmed analytically based on the exact solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Finally, by inspecting the large fluctuations of the time-integrated current between two halves of the system in stationary maximum-entropy states, we demonstrate violation of the Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry, implying that such states cannot be regarded as equilibrium ones. We show that the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current instead obeys a generalized fluctuation relation.

Dynamical Spin Structure Factors of Quantum Spin Nematic States

Abstract:Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states are calculated in a spin-1/2 square-lattice J(1)-J(2) model with ferromagnetic J(1) and competing antiferromagnetic J(2) interactions. To this end, we use a fermion representation, generalizing it to N flavors. We begin with a spin-triplet pairing state of fermion fields, called Z(2) planar state, which is a stable saddle-point solution in the large-N limit in a finite parameter range where the couplings J(1) and J(2) compete strongly [R. Shindou and T. Momoi, Phys. Rev. B 80, 064410 (2009)]. Using a large-N expansion, we take into account fluctuations around this saddle point up to corrections of order 1/N. The dynamical spin structure factors thus obtained signify the existence of gapless q-linear director-wave (spin-wave) modes at q = (0,0) and gapped "gauge-field"-like collective modes at q = (pi,pi), whose spectral weight vanishes as a linear and quadratic function of the momentum, respectively. The low-energy collective modes contain fluctuations of nematic-director, spin, and gauge degrees of freedom. Associated with the gapless q-linear modes, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T-1 in the low-temperature regime as 1/T-1 proportional to T2d-1, where d is the effective spatial dimension. Abstract:We derive the “continuity-like” equation for the spin density in the system with SU (2) gauge potentials. Then we generalize the conventional Kubo formula for the spin transport, i.e., the linear response of the spin current to both the external U (1) and SU (2) fields. The nonconservation of the spin density is shown to play an essential role in keeping the consistency of the generalized Kubo formula between different gauges.

Abstract:Spin and charge currents in systems with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings are formulated in a unified version of four-dimensional SU(2)$\times$U(1) gauge theory, with U(1) the Maxwell field and SU(2) the Yang-Mills field. While the bare spin current is non-conserved, it is compensated by a contribution from the SU(2) gauge field, which gives rise to a spin torque in the spin transport, consistent with the semi-classical theory of Culcer et al. Orbit current is shown to be non-conserved in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Similar to the Maxwell field inducing forces on charge and charge current, we derive forces acting on spin and spin current induced by the Yang Mills fields such as the Rashba and Dresselhaus fields and the sheer strain field. The spin density and spin current may be considered as a source generating Yang-Mills field in certain condensed matter systems.
Generalized Kubo Formula for Spin Transport: A Theory of Linear Response to Non-Abelian Fields

Abstract:The traditional Kubo formula is generalized to describe the linear response with respect to non-Abelian fields. To fulfil the demand for studying spin transport, the SU(2) Kubo formulae are derived by two conventional approaches with different gauge fixings. Those two approaches are shown to be equivalent where the non-conservation of the SU(2) current plays an essential role in guaranteeing the consistency. Some concrete examples relating Spin Hall Effect are considered. The dc spin conductivity vanishes in the system with parabolic unperturbed dispersion relation. By applying a time-dependent Rashba field, the spin conductivity can be measured directly. Our formula is also applied to the high-dimensional representation for the interests of some important models, such as Luttinger model and bilayer spin Hall system.

Abstract:We report on a general theory for analyzing quantum transport through devices in the metal-QD-metal configuration where QD is a quantum dot or the device-scattering region which contains Rashba spin-orbital and electron-electron interactions. The metal leads may or may not be ferromagnetic, and they are assumed to weakly couple to the QD region. Our theory is formulated by second quantizing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in spectral space (instead of real space), and quantum transport is then analyzed within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The Rashba interaction causes two main effects to the Hamiltonian: (i) it gives rise to an extra spin-dependent phase factor in the coupling matrix elements between the leads and the QD, and (ii) it gives rise to an interlevel spin-flip term, but forbids any intralevel spin flips. Our formalism provides a starting point for analyzing many quantum transport issues where spin-orbital effects are important. As an example, we investigate the transport properties of a Aharnov-Bohm ring in which a QD having a Rashba spin-orbital and electron-electron interactions is located in one arm of the ring. A substantial spin-polarized conductance or current emerges in this device due to the combined effect of a magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction. The direction and strength of the spin polarization are shown to be controllable by both the magnetic flux and a gate voltage.

Abstract:According to the general principle of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, we propose a set of macroscopic transport equations for the spin transport and the charge transport. In particular, the spin torque is introduced as a generalized 'current density' to describe the phenomena associated with the spin non-conservation in a unified framework. The Einstein relations and the Onsager relations between different transport phenomena are established. Specifically, the spin transport properties of the isotropic non-magnetic and the isotropic magnetic two-dimensional electron gases are fully described by using this theory, in which only the macroscopic-spin-related transport phenomena allowed by the symmetry of the system are taken into account.

Abstract:A semiclassical theory of spin dynamics and transport is formulated using the Dirac electron model. This is done by constructing a wavepacket from the positive-energy electron band, and studying its structure and center of mass motion. The wavepacket has a minimal size equal to the Compton wavelength, and has self-rotation about the average spin angular momentum, which gives rise to the spin magnetic moment. Geometric gauge structure in the center of mass motion provides a natural explanation of the spin-orbit coupling and various Yafet terms. Applications of the spin-Hall and spin-Nernst effects are discussed.

Abstract:We have set up a set of many-body kinetic Bloch equations with spacial inhomogeneity. We reexamined the widely adopted quasi-independent electron model and showed the inadequacy of this model in studying the spin transport. We further pointed out a new decoherence effect based on interference effect along the diffusion in spin transport problem due to the so called inhomogeneous broadening effect in the Bloch equations. We have shown that this inhomogeneous broadening effect can cause the spin decoherence alone even without the scattering and that the resulting decoherence is more important than the dephasing effect due to the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) term together with the scattering.

Abstract:We derive the relativistic quantum kinetic equation for massless fermions with vector and axial vector interaction using the Wigner function formalism. The vector and axial vector currents are self-consistently treated with corresponding constraint equations. The kinetic equations are derived and the condition for equilibrium is discussed up to the first order of $\hbar$. In addition to the vorticity and shear contributions, the divergence of the local particle number density is also found to contribute to the kinetic equations.

Spin fluctuations in quantized transport of magnetic topological insulators

Abstract:In magnetic topological insulators, quantized electronic transport is interwined with spontaneous magnetic ordering, as magnetization controls band gaps, hence band topology, through the exchange interaction. We show that considering the exchange gaps at the mean-field level is inadequate to predict phase transitions between electronic states of distinct topology. Thermal spin fluctuations disturbing the magnetization can act as frozen disorders that strongly scatter electrons, reducing the onset temperature of quantized transport appreciably even in the absence of structural impurities. This effect, which has hitherto been overlooked, provides an alternative explanation of recent experiments on intrinsic magnetic topological insulators.

Abstract:An easy-plane spin winding in a quantum spin chain can be treated as a transport quantity, which propagates along the chain but has a finite lifetime due to phase slips. In a hydrodynamic formulation for the winding dynamics, the quantum continuity equation acquires a source term due to the transverse vorticity flow. The latter reflects the phase slips and generally compromises the global conservation law. A linear-response formalism for the nonlocal winding transport then reduces to a Kubo response for the winding flow along the spin chain, in conjunction with the parasitic vorticity flow transverse to it. One-dimensional topological hydrodynamics can be recovered when the vorticity flow is asymptotically small. Starting with a microscopic spin-chain formulation, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of the winding transport based on the renormalized sine-Gordon equation, incorporating phase slips as well as Gilbert damping. A generic electrical device is proposed to manifest this physics. We thus suggest winding conductivity as a tangible concept that can characterize low-energy dynamics in a broad class of quantum magnets.

Abstract:The conventional quasiclassical approach to magnetotransport in magnetic multilayers and magnetic granular solids is found to be suitable only for collinear magnetization configurations. A quantum treatment of electron spin is proposed to improve the quasiclassical theory to be applicable to arbitrary magnetization alignments, in which the electron distribution functions, as well as the electric fields and currents, need to be regarded as spinor matrices which are off-diagonal in spin space of conduction electrons. An extended Boltzmann equation has been used to derive the two-point spinor conductivity in magnetic inhomogeneous systems. The result obtained is found to be identical to that obtained from the real-space Kubo formula, indicating a close link between the reformed quasiclassical approach and the quantum theory. Angular dependence of the current-in-plane magnetoresistance in magnetic superlattices is discussed.
Transport in boundary-driven quantum spin systems: One-way street for the energy current

Abstract:We study transport properties in boundary-driven asymmetric quantum spin chains given by $\mathit{XXZ}$ and $\mathit{XXX}$ Heisenberg models. Our approach exploits symmetry transformations in the Lindblad master equation associated to the dynamics of the systems. We describe the mathematical steps to build the unitary transformations related to the symmetry properties. For general target polarizations, we show the occurrence of the one-way street phenomenon for the energy current, namely, the energy current does not change in magnitude and direction as we invert the baths at the boundaries. We also analyze the spin current in some situations, and we prove the uniqueness of the steady state for all investigated cases. Our results, involving nontrivial properties of the energy flow, shall interest researchers working on the control and manipulation of quantum transport.
