Abstract:We consider the role of the torsion axial-vector played in the dynamics of the Dirac spinor fields: we show that the torsional correction entails effects that render regular the otherwise singular spinorial matter field distribution. Comments about consequences for physics are given.

Abstract:A kinetic model for the dynamics of collisionless spin neutral particles in a spacetime with torsion is proposed. The fundamental matter field is the kinetic density $f(x,u,s)$ of particles with four-velocity $u$ and four-spin $s$. The stress-energy tensor and the spin current of the particles distribution are defined as suitable integral moments of $f$ in the $(u,s)$ variables. By requiring compatibility with the contracted Bianchi identity in Einstein-Cartan theory, we derive a transport equation on the kinetic density $f$ that generalizes the well-known Vlasov equation for spinless particles. The total number of particles in the new model is not conserved. To restore this important property we assume the existence in spacetime of a second species of particles with the same mass and spin magnitude. The Vlasov equation on the kinetic density $\overline{f}$ of the new particles is derived by requiring that the sum of total numbers of particles of the two species should be conserved.

Abstract:We consider the problem of having relativistic quantum mechanics re-formulated with hydrodynamic variables, and specifically the problem of deriving the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations (describing the motion of a massive spinning body moving in a gravitational field) from the Dirac equation. The problem will be answered on a general manifold with torsion and gravity. We will demonstrate that when plane waves are considered the MPD equations describe the general relativistic wave-particle duality with torsion, but we will also see that in such a form the MPD equations become trivial.

Covariant spin-parity decomposition of the Torsion and Path Integrals

Abstract:We propose a functional measure over the torsion tensor. We discuss two completely equivalent choices for the Wheeler-DeWitt supermetric for this field, the first one being based on its algebraic decomposition, the other inspired by teleparallel theories of gravity. The measure is formally defined by requiring the normalization of the Gaussian integral. To achieve such a result we split the torsion tensor into its spin-parity eigenstates by constructing a new, York-like, decomposition. Of course, such a decomposition has a wider range of applicability to any kind of tensor sharing the symmetries of the torsion. As a result of this procedure a functional Jacobian naturally arises, whose formal expression is given exactly in the phenomenologically interesting limit of maximally symmetric spaces. We also discuss the explicit computation of this Jacobian in the case of a $4$-dimensional sphere $S^4$ with particular emphasis on its logarithmic divergences.

On the Stability of Riemannian Manifold with Parallel Spinors

Abstract:Inspired by the recent work of Physicists Hertog-Horowitz-Maeda, we prove two stability results for compact Riemannian manifolds with nonzero parallel spinors. Our first result says that Ricci flat metrics which also admits nonzero parallel spinors are stable (in the direction of changes in conformal structures) as the critical points of the total scalar curvature functional. In fact, we show that the Lichnerowicz Laplacian, which governs the second variation, is the square of a twisted Dirac operator. Our second result, which is a local version of the first one, shows that any metrics of positive scalar curvature cannot lie too close to a metric with nonzero parallel spinor. We also prove a rigidity result for special holonomy metrics. In the case of $SU(m)$ holonomy, the rigidity result implies that scalar flat deformations of Calabi-Yau metric must be Calabi-Yau. Finally we explore the connection with positive mass theorem, which presents another approach to proving these stability and rigidity results.

Torsion and Lorentz symmetry from Twisted Spectral Triples

Abstract:By twisting the spectral triple of a riemannian spin manifold, we show how to generate an orthogonal and geodesic preserving torsion from a torsionless Dirac operator. We identify the group of twisted unitaries as the generator of torsion with co-exact three form. Through the fermionic action, the torsion term identifies with a Lorentzian energy-momentum 4-vector. The Lorentz group turns out to be a normal subgroup of the twisted unitaries. We also investigate the spectral action related to this model.

Geometrisation of Fermions in Flat Spacetimes

Abstract:Requiring physical consistency in a classical flat spacetime geometrisation of fermions is shown to suggest the introduction of torsion. A resulting simple model for that torsion produces a localised quantum-like particle as a solution of a spinor identity that closely resembles the Dirac equation of quantum electrodynamics. All relevant integrals involving solutions of the spinor identity converge and require that the spin, which is no longer intrinsic but arises from circulating currents, be 1/2 whilst the magnetic moment takes the quantum value of 1 magneton, characteristic of an isolated Dirac particle. The underlying torsion associates the otherwise strictly localised particle with an extended spacetime structure that may be relevant to wider quantum phenomena.

Massive propagating modes of torsion

Abstract:The dynamics of the torsion field is analyzed in the framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG), a De~Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of gauge gravity. The action is quadratic in both, the torsion and the Riemann-Cartan tensor. Since the latter adds the derivative of torsion to the equations of motion, torsion is no longer identical to spin density, as in the Einstein-Cartan theory, but an additional propagating degree of freedom. As torsion turns out to be totally anti-symmetric, it can be parametrised via a single axial vector. It is shown in this paper that, in the weak torsion limit, the axial vector obeys a wave equation with an effective mass term which is partially dependent on the scalar curvature. The source of torsion is thereby given by the fermion axial current which is the net fermionic spin density of the system. Possible measurable effects and approaches to experimental analysis are addressed. For example, neutron star mergers could act as a dipoles or quadrupoles for torsional radiation, and an analysis of radiation of pulsars could lead to a detection of torsion wave background radiation.

Abstract:We consider the Dirac field in polar formulation, showing that when torsion is taken in effective approximation the theory has the thermodynamic properties of a van der Waals gas, that when the limit of zero chiral angle is taken the theory reduces to that of a Weyssenhoff fluid, and that under the spinless condition it gives the Newtonian particle. This nesting of approximations will allow us to interpret the various objects pertaining to the spinor, with torsion providing a form of negative pressure, and the chiral angle being related to a type of temperature.

Abstract:We discuss the theoretical basis for the search of the possible experimental manifestations of the torsion field at low energies. First, the quantum field theory in an external gravitational field with torsion is reviewed. The renormalizability requires the nonminimal interaction of torsion with spinor and scalar (Higgs) fields. The Pauli-like equation contains new torsion-dependent terms which have a different structure as compared with the standard electromagnetic ones. The same concerns the nonrelativistic equations for spin-${1}/{2}$ particle in an external torsion and electromagnetic fields. Second, we discuss the propagating torsion. For the Dirac spinor coupled to the electromagnetic and torsion field there is some additional softly broken local symmetry associated with torsion. As a consequence of this symmetry, in the framework of effective field theory, the torsion action is fixed with accuracy to the values of the coupling constant of the torsion-spinor interaction, mass of the torsion and higher derivative terms. The introduction of the Higgs field spoils the consistency of this scheme, and the effective quantum field theory for torsion embedded into the Standard Model is not possible. The phenomenological consequences of the torsion-fermion interaction are drown and the case of the torsion mass of the Planck order is discussed.

Abstract:We study sources for torsion in Poincare gauge theory of any dimension, signature, and spin. We find that symmetric kinetic terms for non-Yang-Mills bosonic fields of arbitrary rank drive torsion. Our detailed discussion of spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger fields shows that they source all independent parts of the torsion. We develop systematic notation for spin-(2k+1)/2 fields and find the spin tensor for arbitrary k in n > 2k dimensions. For k > 0 there is a novel direct coupling between torsion and spinor fields. We also cast the well-known gauge relation between the canonical and Belinfante-Rosenfield energy tensors in terms of different choices of independent variables.

Abstract:We investigate the axial vector torsion-spin coupling effects in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity with the general Yang-Mills type Lagrangian. The dynamical equations for the ``electric'' and ``magnetic'' components of the torsion field variable are obtained in the general form and it is shown that the helicity density and the spin density of the electromagnetic field appear as the physical sources. The modified Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field are derived, and the electromagnetic wave propagation under the action of the uniform homogeneous torsion field is considered. We demonstrate the Faraday effect of rotation of the polarization for such a wave, and establish the strong bound on the possible cosmic axial torsion field from the astrophysical data.

Abstract:This paper delves into the deformation of spinor structures within nontrivial topologies and their physical implications. The deformation is modeled by introducing real functions that modify the standard spinor dynamics, leading to distinct physical regions characterized by varying degrees of Lorentz symmetry violation. It allows us to investigate the effects in the dynamical equation and a geometrized nonlinear sigma model. The findings suggest significant implications for the spinor fields in regions with nontrivial topologies, providing a robust mathematical approach to studying exotic spinor behavior.

Abstract:We introduce a generalized tetrad which plays the role of a potential for torsion and makes torsion dynamic. Starting from the Einstein-Cartan action with torsion, we get two field equations, the Einstein equation and the torsion field equation by using the metric tensor and the torsion potential as independent variables; in the former equation the torsion potential plays the role of a matter field. We also discuss properties of local linear transformations of the torsion potential and give a simple example in which the torsion potential is described by a scalar field.

Abstract:We derive the running of the $R^2$ coupling in the Starobinsky Lagrangian that stems from integrating out quantum torsion fluctuations on a maximally symmetric Euclidean background. Our analysis is performed in a manifestly covariant way, exploiting both the recently-introduced spin-parity decomposition of torsion perturbations and the heat kernel technique. The Lagrangian we start with is the most general one involving kinetic terms and couplings to the scalar curvature that is compatible with a gauge-like symmetry for the torsion. The latter removes the twice-longitudinal vector mode from the spectrum, and it yields operators of maximum rank four.

Abstract:We consider spinorial fields in polar form to deduce their respective tensorial connection in various physical situations: we show that in some cases the tensorial connection is a useful tool, instead in other cases it arises as a necessary object. The comparative analysis of the different cases possessing a tensorial connection is done, investigating the analogies between space-time structures. Eventual comments on quantum field theory and specific spinors are given.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. This paper is related to the dynamics of stellar structure under the influence of modified gravity (in particular [math] gravity, where T is associated with a torsion scalar). We contemplate non-static plane geometry equipped with fluid dissipation in the form of diffusion limit. The suitable variables to handle the analysis are explored. To comprehend the dynamics of the system, we acquire the dynamical equations with the aid of Bianchi identities. We calculate the Taub mass for our structure and develop the relations of mass in the form of collapsing velocity, derivative of proper radial, and time. The scalars to comprehend the evolution and structure are explored for non-static plane geometry. These scalars have a novel existence for this structure. We find that the homogeneous expansion and homologous ways of evolution interrelate with each other. We perform the investigation for two cases that is dissipative and non-dissipative. The nature of the fluid in the dissipative case is shear and geodesic. We calculate the variety of solutions in this case. The analysis is concluded by analyzing the stability of the vanishing [math] constraint.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of external torsion fields on ideal gases and Fermi gases, and derive a macroscopic quantity, which we call torsion susceptibility. We first consider the Dirac fermions in the Riemann-Cartan spacetime minimally coupled to the background torsion and electromagnetic fields. After applying the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, Hamiltonian of a spin-1/2 particle in weak field limit is obtained. The coupling of spin and spatial components of axial torsion vector has a Zeeman-like effect, which removes the degeneracy of energy levels and splits the energy levels with respect to the spin. We calculate the macroscopic effects of the spin-torsion coupling on ideal gases, which satisfying the Boltzmann distribution, and Fermi gases, which satisfying the Fermi-Dirac distribution. The torsion susceptibility of ideal gases is inversely proportional to the temperature and is constant in Fermi gases.

Abstract:A model of an extended manifold for the Dirac spinor field is considered. Two Lagrangians related by CPTM (charge-parity-time-mass) symmetry are constructed for a pair of the Dirac spinor fields with each spinor field defined in a separate manifold. An interaction between the matter fields in the manifolds is introduced through gravity. A fermionic effective action of the general system is constructed and a tadpole one-loop spinor diagram and part of the one-loop vacuum diagrams with two external gravitational off-shell fields which contribute to the effective action are calculated. It is demonstrated that among different versions of the second spinor Lagrangian there is a special one for which a cancellation of the mentioned diagrams in the total effective action takes place. As a result, the diagrams do not contribute to the cosmological constant, as well there is a zero contribution of the zero point energies of the spinor fields to the action. The non-zero leading order value of the cosmological constant for each manifold in the framework is proportional to the trace of an momentum-energy tensor of each separated manifold or difference of the tensors of the related manifolds. The result is depending on the chosen model of interaction of gravitational fields with fermions, the different possibilities are discussed. An appearance of the dark matter in the model is shortly discussed as well as further applications of the approach and it's interconnections with other cosmology models.
