Abstract:The dynamics of the torsion field is analyzed in the framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG), a De Donder–Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of gauge gravity. The action is quadratic in both, the torsion and the Riemann–Cartan tensor. Since the latter adds the derivative of torsion to the equations of motion, torsion is no longer identical to spin density, as in the Einstein–Cartan theory, but an additional propagating degree of freedom. As torsion turns out to be totally anti-symmetric, it can be parametrised via a single axial vector. It is shown in this paper that, in the weak torsion limit, the axial vector obeys a wave equation with an effective mass term which is partially dependent on the scalar curvature. The source of torsion is thereby given by the fermion axial current which is the net fermionic spin density of the system. Possible measurable effects and approaches to experimental analysis are addressed. For example, neutron star mergers could act as a dipoles or quadrupoles for torsional radiation, and an analysis of radiation of pulsars could lead to a detection of torsion wave background radiation.

A Turbo Coding System for High Speed Communications

Abstract:Conventional turbo codes (CTCs) usually employ a block-oriented interleaving so that each block is separately encoded and decoded. As interleaving and de-interleaving are performed within a block, the message-passing process associated with an iterative decoder is limited to proceed within the corresponding range. This paper presents a new turbo coding scheme that uses a special interleaver structure and a multiple-round early termination test involving both sign check and a CRC code. The new interleaver structure is naturally suited for high speed parallel processing and the resulting coding system offers new design options and tradeoffs that are not available to CTCs. In particular, it becomes possible for the decoder to employ an efficient inter-block collaborative decoding algorithm, passing the information obtained from termination test proved blocks to other unproved blocks. It also becomes important to have a proper decoding schedule. The combined effect is improved performance and reduction in the average decoding delay (whence the required computing power). A memory (storage) management mechanism is included as a critical part of the decoder so as to provide additional design tradeoff between performance and memory size. It is shown that the latter has a modular-like effect in that additional memory units render enhanced performance due not only to less forced early terminations but to possible increases of the interleaving depth. Depending on the decoding schedule, the degree of parallelism and other decoding resources available, the proposed scheme admits a variety of decoder architectures that meet a large range of throughput and performance demands.

Quantum Field Theory of neutrino mixing in spacetimes with torsion

Abstract:In the framework of quantum field theory, we analyze the neutrino oscillations in the presence of a torsion background. We consider the Einstein-Cartan theory and we study the cases of constant torsion and of linearly time dependent torsion. We derive new neutrino oscillation formulae which are depending on the spin orientation. Indeed the energy splitting induced by the torsion influences oscillation amplitudes and frequencies. This effect is maximal for values of torsion of the same order of the neutrino masses and for very low momenta, and disappears for large values of torsion. Moreover, neutrino oscillation is inhibited for intensities of torsion term much larger than neutrino masses and momentum. The modifications induced by torsion on the $CP$-asymmetry has been also presented. Future experiments, such as PTOLEMY, could provide insights into the effect shown here.

Abstract:We investigate the axial vector torsion-spin coupling effects in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity with the general Yang-Mills type Lagrangian. The dynamical equations for the ``electric'' and ``magnetic'' components of the torsion field variable are obtained in the general form and it is shown that the helicity density and the spin density of the electromagnetic field appear as the physical sources. The modified Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field are derived, and the electromagnetic wave propagation under the action of the uniform homogeneous torsion field is considered. We demonstrate the Faraday effect of rotation of the polarization for such a wave, and establish the strong bound on the possible cosmic axial torsion field from the astrophysical data.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of external torsion fields on ideal gases and Fermi gases, and derive a macroscopic quantity, which we call torsion susceptibility. We first consider the Dirac fermions in the Riemann-Cartan spacetime minimally coupled to the background torsion and electromagnetic fields. After applying the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, Hamiltonian of a spin-1/2 particle in weak field limit is obtained. The coupling of spin and spatial components of axial torsion vector has a Zeeman-like effect, which removes the degeneracy of energy levels and splits the energy levels with respect to the spin. We calculate the macroscopic effects of the spin-torsion coupling on ideal gases, which satisfying the Boltzmann distribution, and Fermi gases, which satisfying the Fermi-Dirac distribution. The torsion susceptibility of ideal gases is inversely proportional to the temperature and is constant in Fermi gases.

For conservation biologists to make decisions regarding the management of biological diversity, they need adequate floral and faunal inventories for the lands they manage. Species lists are only a first step in addressing large questions regarding relationships between species and their environments, ~d, in particular, species responses to environmental change. Understanding the environmental parameters that define species distributions is an even more important component of biodiversity assessment.

Abstract:It is well-entrenched folklore that all torsion gravity theories predict observationally negligible torsion in the solar system, since torsion (if it exists) couples only to the intrinsic spin of elementary particles, not to rotational angular momentum. We argue that this assumption has a logical loophole which can and should be tested experimentally, and consider nonstandard torsion theories in which torsion can be generated by macroscopic rotating objects. In the spirit of action=reaction, if a rotating mass like a planet can generate torsion, then a gyroscope would be expected to feel torsion. An experiment with a gyroscope (without nuclear spin) such as Gravity Probe B (GPB) can test theories where this is the case. Using symmetry arguments, we show that to lowest order, any torsion field around a uniformly rotating spherical mass is determined by seven dimensionless parameters. These parameters effectively generalize the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism and provide a concrete framework for further testing Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR). We construct a parametrized Lagrangian that includes both standard torsion-free GR and Hayashi-Shirafuji maximal torsion gravity as special cases. We demonstrate that classic solar system tests rule out the latter and constrain two observable parameters. We show that Gravity Probe B is an ideal experiment for further constraining nonstandard torsion theories, and work out the most general torsion-induced precession of its gyroscope in terms of our torsion parameters.

Abstract:We study a massless real self-interacting scalar field non-minimally coupled to Einstein gravity with torsion in (2+1) space-time dimensions in the presence of a cosmological constant. The field equations with a self-interaction potential including terms are derived by a variational principle. By numerically solving these field equations with the 4th Runge–Kutta method, the circularly symmetric rotating solutions for (2+1) dimensions Einstein gravity with torsion are obtained. Exact analytical solutions to the field equations are derived for the proposed metric in the absence of both torsion and angular momentum. We find that the self-interacting potential only exists for , as requested by conformal symmetry. We also study the motion of massive and massless particles in (2+1) Einstein gravity with torsion coupled to a self-interacting scalar field. The effect of torsion on the behavior of the effective potentials of the particles is analyzed numerically.

Abstract:We consider antisymmetric metric-affine theories of gravity with a Lagrangian containing the most general terms up to dimension four and search for theories that are ghost- and tachyon-free when expanded around flat space. We find new examples that propagate only the graviton and one other massive degree of freedom of spin zero, one, or two. Abstract:OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of different acupoints on activities of the cardiac sympathetic nerve in rabbits with acute myocardial schemia (AMI). METHODS A total of 40 Chinchilla rabbits were randomized into normal control, model, Shenmen (HT 7), Taixi (KI 3) and non-acupoint groups (n8/group). AMI model was established by intravenous injection of pituitrin (3 U/kg). EA (1.1 mA, 2 Hz) was applied to bilateral HT 7, KI 3 and non-acupoint (the bulge site of the triangular muscle) for 10 mm. The rabbit's cardiac sympathetic discharges were recorded by BIOPAC under anesthesia. RESULTS In comparison with control group, the heart rate (HR) and the frequency of cardiac sympathetic discharges (CSD) decreased significantly after AMI (P < 0.01). At the moment of cease of EA, at 20 mm after EA, HR and 050 frequency in HT 7 group were significantly higher than those of model group (P < 0.01), suggesting a favorable inhibition of EA of HT 7 on the decreased HR and OSO. No significant differences were found between KI 3 and model groups, and between KI 3 and non-acupoint groups in both HR and OSD at any time courses (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION EA of HT 7 can correct AMI-induced decrease of both HR and OSO in the rabbit, while EA of KI 3 and non-acupoint have not this effect, suggesting a relatively specific efficacy of EA of different acupoints on cardiac sympathetic activities.

These range from novel materials, such as graphene and graphene-like materials, to advanced theoretical ideas, such as string theory and supersymmetry/supergravity and applications thereof in understanding the dark sector of our Universe. This work reviews such applications of torsion at different physical scales.

Abstract:We discuss the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in curved space-time with torsion in the leading order of the $1/N$ expansion. The effective potential of the torsion sector is calculated using the new technique based on the nonlocal part of anomaly-induced action which was recently found to produce the effective potential in the low-energy limit. The spontaneous symmetry breaking caused by the change of the torsion term is found, confirming the statements known from the existing literature. Furthermore, the gap equation is calculated as a function of curvature and torsion. Finally, the behavior of the effective four fermions coupling constant as a function of the torsion is discussed.

Abstract:We evaluate the Lorentzian gravitational path integral in the presence of nonvanishing torsion with the application of the Picard-Lefschetz theory for minisuperspaces corresponding to a number of phenomenological bouncing cosmological models as well as for the inflationary paradigm. It turns out that the semiclassical wave function derived from the saddle points of the path-integral formalism coincides with the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Intriguingly, our analysis showed that the relative probability, derived using these semiclassical wave functions favors universes with smaller values of torsion. Moreover, we find that in the inflationary case, nonzero values of a certain parity-violating component of the torsion enhance the power in the large-physical length scales, which can have important observational implications. On the other hand, in the case of bouncing models, the power spectrum is characterized by an initial region of growth, an intermediate oscillatory region, and then again a final region of growth. The shape of the power spectrum in the initial and intermediate regions is sensitive to the abundance of the bounce-enabling matter and torsion, along with the initial wave function of the universe, while the final size modifies the behavior of the power spectrum in the smaller length scales. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.043525 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The torsion of spacetime, if it exists, plays an important role at the very early universe, when the spin density of particles was very high. It is generally believed that in the extremely high energies of the early universe a new physics called trans-Planckian physics should be considered. Since the initial conditions for inflation are probably a result of this new physics, here we consider spin and torsion as trans-Planckian effects and analyze their influence on the power spectrum of scalar and tensor perturbations at the end of the inflationary era.

Abstract:We study the physical effects of torsion as predicted by the Einstein-Cartan theory in the test particle approximation and the non-relativist limit. We first present the corresponding non-relativistic Hamiltonian for a 2-spinor. Then, we solve an idealized reflection and transmission problem for a non-relativistic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ beam travelling across a spin-polarized target. We identify deviations in the spin polarizations of the reflected and transmitted as observables capable of distinguishing Einstein-Cartan from standard general relativity. If measured, this effect would constitute compelling evidence for the presence of spacetime torsion.

Abstract:We study sources for torsion in Poincare gauge theory of any dimension, signature, and spin. We find that symmetric kinetic terms for non-Yang-Mills bosonic fields of arbitrary rank drive torsion. Our detailed discussion of spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger fields shows that they source all independent parts of the torsion. We develop systematic notation for spin-(2k+1)/2 fields and find the spin tensor for arbitrary k in n > 2k dimensions. For k > 0 there is a novel direct coupling between torsion and spinor fields. We also cast the well-known gauge relation between the canonical and Belinfante-Rosenfield energy tensors in terms of different choices of independent variables.
