Abstract:We reported a simple, robust, and highly sensitive temperature sensor using intrinsic Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by means of bending a tapered microfiber, embedded in polydimethylsiloxane. The outer temperature perturbations modulate the refractive index of the polymer through thermo-optic and thermal expansion effects of the polymer. This leads to a phase difference between interfering guided modes through the bent-microfiber, which ultimately results prominent wavelength shift in the transmission spectrum. The sensor exhibits a linear temperature response with a sensitivity as high as -6.25nm/°C over the temperature range from 24° to 40 °C. The sensitivity of the sensor increases as wavelength increases.

Abstract:A helical double cladding seven-core microstructured fiber (HSCMOF) sensor is demonstrated for inline torsion and direction measurement. To fabricate the device, a segment of SCMOF with a double cladding structure constructed by air holes is pretwisted and spliced between two single-mode fibers to form a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Due to the special structure, the proposed sensor not only reaches the torsion sensitivities as high as 515.7 and −294.7 pm/(rad/m) in clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions, respectively, but also eliminates the cross sensitivity to external temperature and refractive index (RI) interferences, which continues to be an issue that persist in normal helical fibers. We envision that the sensor can be applied in harsh environments, such as health monitoring and underwater exploration.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel optical fiber torsion sensor based on dual polarized Mach-Zehnder interference (DPMZI). Unlike the conventional fiber sensor, the proposed sensor is composed of a sensor part and a demodulator. The demodulator is made by a bared single mode fiber (SMF) loop, and the sensor part is a segment of a coated SMF placed before the loop. A mathematical model is proposed based on DPMZI mechanism and from the model when the sensor part is twisted, the E-field rotational angle will bring a quasi-linear impact on the resonance dip wavelength in their matched detecting range. A proof-of-concept experiment was performed to verify the theoretical prediction. From the experimental data, a sensitivity of -0.3703, -1.00962, and -0.59881 nm•m/rad is achieved with the determining range of 12.0936, 7.6959, and 10.4444 rad/m respectively. The sensor which is composed only of the SMF has the advantages of low insertion loss (~-2dB), healthy structure, low manufacture cost, and easy assembly and application.

Abstract:Optical fiber torsion sensors play a pivotal role in artificial intelligence, construction engineering, structural health monitoring and other fields. Research on low cost, simple structures and measurement methods has become a priority for researchers. Here, we propose an intensity-modulated and direction-recognizing torsion sensor based on two mode fiber with a sandwich structure, that serves as a mode interferometer formed by fundamental modes LP 01 and second order core modes LP 11 excited by means of offset fusion splicing. The capacity of intensity modulation and torsional direction recognition comes from the antisymmetric phase of fiber mode, which makes the sensor work like Marius' law. The antisymmetric phase of the LP 11 mode leads to an asymmetric transmission spectrum, whose direction enables the sensor to distinguish the torsion direction. Peaks and troughs in the measured spectrum interchange when the torsion direction is reversed. The initial angle between two offset directions enables control of the zero-crossing point within in the twisting range. The torsion sensitivity reaches 364%/(rad/cm) with a measurement accuracy of ± 0.22 rad/m.

Abstract:A novel directional torsion sensor based on a helical taper is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The helical taper was fabricated in panda polarization-maintaining fiber by electric-arc discharge of a fusion splicer and by rotating one end fiber clamp simultaneously. The optimal parameters of the taper are the waist diameter of 60.84 mu m and the length of 700 mu m. This torsion sensor has a sensitivity of -3.191 nm/(rad/m) in the twist rate ranges from 0 to 13.57 rad/m, which is relatively higher than the value so far reported. Then, the torsion sensor also has the ability to identify rotational direction. In addition, the helical taper is almost insensitive to temperature.

Abstract:Fiber interferometric sensor can be used to measure torsion, and Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structured torsion sensor is convenient for practical applications, but the measurement sensitivity is low and needs to be improved. The off-axis light transmitted in the graded index fiber is highly susceptible to torsional modulation, which leads to a significantly higher response compared to the fundamental mode transmitted along the axis. As a result, the off-axis light is referred to as the “separation mode” because its transmission trajectory is separated from the fundamental mode. In this paper, we constructed a torsion sensing MZI using a graded index fiber, excited the separation mode to interfere with the fundamental mode to improve sensing sensitivity, designed four steps of sensitization in sequence, and proved the feasibility of the scheme through experimental. After four steps of sensitization, the sensitivity of the sensor gradually improves, with the highest torsion sensitivity of 4 nm/(rad/m) and −4.1 nm/(rad/m) in positive and negative directions, respectively. The linearity is good within the measurement range of −2.5 rad/m to 2.5 rad/m. The proposed torsion MZI sensitization scheme is novel, and with a high sensitivity torsion MZI, which will play an important role in the field of intelligent monitoring and control.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a compact optical fiber sensor that aims to measure the torsion in both amount and direction with high sensitivity. This sensor is configured by a triangular-prism-shaped long-period fiber grating, which is fabricated by the high frequency CO 2 laser polished method. The unique design of the triangular-shaped structure breaks the rotational symmetry of the optical fiber and provides high sensitivity for torsion measurement. In preliminary experiments, the torsion response of the sensor achieves a good stability and linearity. The torsion sensitivity is 0.54 nm/(rad/m), which renders the proposed structure a highly sensitive torsion sensor.

Abstract:A segmented long period fiber grating (LPFG)-based torsion sensor with both high sensitivity and ability to discriminate torsion direction is proposed and experimentally investigated. The sensor is made up of three spatial orthogonal short LPFGs by using a CO2 laser notched method. Experimental results show that the torsion sensitivities can reach -0.54 and 0.33 dB/(rad/m) in dip depth and 0.30 and -0.14 nm/(rad/m) in resonance wavelength for clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively, in a single polarization state. Torsion rate and torsion direction can be measured simultaneously by the sensor. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of the sensor has been determined as 0.067 nm/°C. Therefore, the proposed segmented-LPFG would have great potential applications in engineering and fiber sensors.

Abstract:We propose a high-performance vector torsion sensor based on an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), which consists of a straight waveguide inscribed in the core-cladding boundary of the SMF by a femtosecond laser in only one step. The length of the in-fiber MZI is 5 mm, and the whole fabrication time does not exceed 1 min. The asymmetric structure makes the device have high polarization dependence, and the transmission spectrum shows a strong polarization-dependent dip. Since the polarization state of the input light entering the in-fiber MZI varies with the twist of the fiber, torsion sensing can be achieved by monitoring the polarization-dependent dip. Torsion can be demodulated by both the wavelength and intensity of the dip, and vector torsion sensing can be achieved by setting the appropriate polarization state of the incident light. The torsion sensitivity based on intensity modulation can reach 5763.96 dB/(rad/mm). The response of dip intensity to strain and temperature is weak. Furthermore, the in-fiber MZI retains the fiber coating, so it maintains the robustness of the complete fiber structure.

Abstract:We demonstrated a periodical helix-style long period fiber grating (HS-LPFG) based torsion sensor with both high sensitivity and the ability to discriminate torsion direction. The proposed structure has asymmetric refractive index modulation in radial and azimuthal directions, which leads to the HS-LPFG being highly sensitive to torsional sensing. Experimental results show that torsion sensitivity is obtained up to 1.65 nm/(rad/m) in the measuring range of -17.952 rad/m to 17.952 rad/m, which is about fifty times higher than that of the conventional LPFG induced by CO2 laser. Moreover, the structure has low crosstalk of 0.037 rad/m/°C and a compact length of 5 mm.

Abstract:Based on the principle of Solc interferometer, an optical fiber sensor which can realize torsional direction and torsion angle measurement simultaneously is proposed in this paper. The sensor is consisted of a segment of single mode fiber (SMF), polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) and two polarizers. When the light of the broad band source is transmitted in the sensor, the interference spectra can be observed at the output of the sensor. The interference spectra of the sensor can be changed when the sensor is twisted clockwise or counter-clockwise. Because the peaks position and dips position in interference spectra are reversed when clockwise and counter-clockwise torsions are applied, the torsional direction can be judged conveniently. With the increase of the torsion angle, the extinction ratio (ER) of interference spectra will change significantly. By measuring the changes of the ER, torsion angle can be calculated easily. The highest sensitivity can reach to 0.79dB/degrees in the range of [-50,52 degrees].

Abstract:A new directional bending sensor based on a dual side-hole fiber (DSHF) that can detect both the direction and magnitude of bending in a self-temperature compensated manner is described and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is based on an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), where a DSHF segment was spliced between two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) as input and output. The sensor has two orthogonal axes which are formed by both the asymmetry in the side-hole location in DSHF and an offset in the fusion splice between the SMF and DSHF. The visibility in the MZI output intensity and the spectral shifts of MZI fringes show separate responses to the bending curvature and direction, which is a key feature of the directional curvature sensor. An inscribed fiber Bragg grating in the DSHF measure allows the temperature to be measured independently. The sensor can provide salient advantages in its unique capability to precisely quantify the direction and magnitude of bending along with its reproducibility, compactness, and suitability for mass production, which makes it suitable for many practical bending sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel torsion sensor based on modal interference and the Lyot filter by utilizing the exciting mode in the single eccentric hole-assisted dual-core fiber (SEHADCF). Based on the interaction between the polarization functional modes and the mode of the suspended core, the phenomena of the interference resonance enhancement and the enhanced Vernier are realized by only adjusting the polarization of the incident light. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor reaches 171.97 dB/rad and 58.87 nm/rad, respectively. Furthermore, the vector property of the polarization state makes it possible to identify both the direction and the degree of the twist applied on the structure. Due to the selective amplification only applied on the parameter of the vector, the crosstalk from other mechanical parameters, including curvature and strain, is decreased significantly. The crosstalk of the strain is low to 7.474 ×10 -7 rad/με. The proposed scheme of the sensor provides a new perspective of regulating both the polarization state and the fiber mode in the sensing field.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a sensor with high torsion sensitivity. This sensor has the ability to distinguish the torsion direction. A long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with a unique geometric structure is used to configure this sensor. The proposed LPFG is prepared by CO<sub>2</sub> laser polishing method and etching method. First, we periodically polish the two opposite planes which are parallel to the axis direction of the fiber to get sheets structure. Then, the V-shaped grooves are etched on the surface orthogonal to the sheets to fabricate the proposed LPFG. Because the V-shaped grooves are arranged along the axis direction of the optical fiber, we name it by V-LPFG. This unique geometric structure results in the sensor with high torsion sensitivity. Experimental results prove that the torsion sensitivity of the proposed sensor reaches 0.399 nm/(rad/m) in the range of–10.5 rad/m to 10.5 rad/m. More importantly, the torsion sensitivity is significantly increased from 0.041 nm/(rad/m) to 0.399 nm/(rad/m) after the V-shaped grooves are etched. The temperature sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 50 pm/°C at the temperature range of 30–150 °C. Due to the high torsion sensitivity, relatively easy fabrication process and high price to quality ratio, the proposed sensor has the potential of carrying out torsion measurement with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A high sensitivity fiber-optic torsion sensor, which can measure twist rate and determine twist direction simultaneously based on a novel ultra-long-period fiber grating (ULPFG) with a period of up to several millimeters, is proposed and demonstrated. Such an ULPFG is fabricated by using the high-frequency CO2 Laser pulses exposure technique. The unique torsion characteristics of the ULPFG are simply analyzed by using the mode coupling theory and the birefringence effect. The experimental results show that the high order resonant wavelengths of the ULPFG have higher torsion sensitivities, which is several times higher than that of the normal LPFG. In addition, an intensity-type demodulation approach used to realize real-time torsion measurement is proposed and demonstrated based on the edge filtering effect of the ULPFG.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors for strain measurement have been playing important roles in structural health monitoring for buildings, tunnels, pipelines, aircrafts, and so on. A highly sensitive strain sensor based on helical structures (HSs) assisted Mach-Zehnder interference in an all-solid heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Due to the HSs, a maximum strain sensitivity as high as −61.8 pm/με was experimentally achieved. This is the highest sensitivity among interferometer-based strain sensors reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, the proposed sensor has the ability to discriminate axial strain and temperature, and offers several advantages such as repeatability of fabrication, robust structure and compact size, which further benefits its practical sensing applications.

Abstract:A highly sensitive optical fiber torsion sensor with femtosecond laser-induced low birefringence SMF-based Sagnac interferometer (SI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. A straight-line waveguide positioned horizontally with respect to the fiber core is inscribed by the femtosecond laser in the cladding of the SMF, which leads to the asymmetry stress distribution in the SMF, and then gives rise to the low birefringence in the SMF. Compared with most of the previous reported SI based torsion sensors, there is no splicing joint in the femtosecond laser-induced low birefringence SMF-based SI, which lowers the transmission loss and makes the SI based torsion sensor more robust simultaneously. The experiment result shows that the proposed torsion sensor exhibits a torsion sensitivity of up to 3.2562 nm/degree, with the high torsion resolution of 0.003 degree. In contrast, the temperature cross-sensitivity and strain cross-sensitivity of the proposed torsion sensor are low, to -0.000055 degree/°C and 0.000013 degree/με, respectively, thus overcoming the cross-sensitivity problem resulting from temperature and strain. Moreover, theoretical analysis are carried out to compare with the experimental results to demonstrate the feasibility and good consistency.
A Torsion Sensor with High Resolution Based on a Pair of Long-Period Fiber Gratings with Rotary Refractive Index Modulation

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a fiber ring laser for high-resolution torsion measurement, where the laser cavity has a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by a pair of longperiod fiber gratings written in a twisted single-mode fiber by a CO2 laser. The emitting wavelength of the laser provides a measure of the torsion rate applied to the grating pair, while the direction of the wavelength shift indicates the direction of the applied torsion. The narrow linewidth and the large side-mode suppression ratio of the laser can provide a much more precise measurement of torsion compared with the passive fiber-optic torsion sensors. The achieved torsion sensitivity is 0, 084 nm/（rad/m） in the torsion range of -± 100 rad/m, which corresponds to a torsion resolution of 0. 12 rad/m, for the wavelength resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer used in our experiments is -10 pm.

Abstract:In this article, a torsion sensor with tunable sensitivity based on long-period fiber grating (LPFG) written in polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is proposed. The LPFG is fabricated by polishing periodic complementary grooves on the principal axis of stress of PMF. By modulating with the CO2 laser, the structural stability of the principal axis of stress is destroyed, which reduces the birefringence effect of the PMF itself. Meanwhile, the elliptical birefringence effect during the torsion is enhanced. Therefore, the torsion sensitivity of the PMF sensor is improved. The experimental results show that the torsion sensitivity can reach 0.81 nm/(rad/m) in the range of −5.70 to 5.70 nm/rad in the slow axis direction. The torsion sensitivity is 0.43 nm/(rad/m) in the large measurement range from −11.40 to 11.40 rad/m in the fast axis direction. Depending on the polarization condition of the incident light, the designed sensor can choose different sensitivities and measurement ranges.
