Abstract:In this review article, we revisit the topic of baryogenesis, which is the physical process that generated the observed baryon asymmetry during the first stages of the primordial Universe. A viable theoretical explanation to understand and investigate the mechanisms underlying baryogenesis must always ensure that the Sakharov criteria are fulfilled. These essentially state the following: (i) baryon number violation; (ii) the violation of both C (charge conjugation symmetry) and CP (the composition of parity and C); (iii) and the departure from equilibrium. Throughout the years, various mechanisms have been proposed to address this issue, and here we review two of the most important, namely, electroweak baryogenesis (EWB) and Grand Unification Theories (GUTs) baryogenesis. Furthermore, we briefly explore how a change in the theory of gravity affects the EWB and GUT baryogenesis by considering Scalar--Tensor Theories (STT), where the inclusion of a scalar field mediates the gravitational interaction, in addition to the metric tensor field. We consider specific STT toy models and show that a modification of the underlying gravitational theory implies a change in the time--temperature relation of the evolving cosmological model, thus altering the conditions that govern the interplay between the rates of the interactions generating baryon asymmetry, and the expansion rate of the Universe. Therefore, the equilibrium of the former does not exactly occur as in the general relativistic standard model, and there are consequences for the baryogenesis mechanisms that have been devised. This is representative of the type of modifications of the baryogenesis processes that are to be found when considering extended theories of gravity.

Abstract:Tension between the Standard Model (SM) and data concerning $b \rightarrow s$ processes has become apparent. Most notoriously, concerning the $R_K$ ratio, which probes lepton non-universality in $b$ decays, and measurements involving the decays $B \rightarrow K^* \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $B_s \rightarrow \phi \mu^+ \mu^-$. Careful analysis of a wide range of $b \rightarrow s$ data shows that certain kinds of new physics can significantly ameliorate agreement with experiment. Here, we show that these $b \rightarrow s$ anomalies can be naturally accommodated in the context of Natural Scherk-Schwarz Theories of the Weak Scale -- a class of models designed to address the hierarchy problem. No extra states need to be introduced in order to accommodate these anomalies, and the assumptions required regarding flavor violating couplings are very mild. Moreover, the structure of the theory makes sharp predictions regarding $B$ meson decays into final states including $\tau^+ \tau^-$ pairs, which will provide a future test of these models.

Abstract:We propose a new alternative for baryogenesis which resolves a number of the problems associated with GUT and electroweak scenarios, and which may allow baryogenesis even in modest extensions of the standard model. If the universe never reheats above the electroweak scale following inflation, GUT baryon production does not occur and at the same time thermal sphalerons, gravitinos and monopoles are not produced in abundance. Nevertheless, non-thermal production of sphaleron configurations via preheating could generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Abstract:Belle II has reported the first evidence for B+→K+νν ̄ with a branching ratio 2.7σ higher than the standard model expectation. We explain this and the MiniBooNE and muon anomalous magnetic moment anomalies in a model with a dark scalar that couples to a slightly heavier sterile Dirac neutrino and that communicates with the visible sector via a Higgs portal. Abstract:The electroweak sphaleron process breaks the baryon number conservation within the realms of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM). Recently, it is pointed out that its decoupling may provide the out-of-equilibrium condition required for baryogenesis. In this paper, we study such a scenario taking into account the baryon-number wash-out effect of the sphaleron itself to improve the estimate. We clarify the amount of CP violation required for this scenario to explain the observed asymmetry.

Anomalies in Hadronic $B$ Decays

Abstract:In this talk, I describe a global fit to $B \to PP$ decays, where $B = \{B^0, B^+, B_s^0\}$ and the pseudoscalar $P = \{\pi, K\}$, under the assumption of flavour SU(3) symmetry [SU(3)$_F$]. It is found that the individual fits to $\Delta S=0$ or $\Delta S=1$ decays are good, but the combined fit is very poor: there is a $3.6\sigma$ disagreement with the standard model. (This is quite a bit larger than the anomaly in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transitions.) This discrepancy can be removed by adding SU(3)$_F$-breaking effects, but 1000\% SU(3)$_F$ breaking is required, considerably more than the $\sim 20\%$ breaking of $f_K/f_\pi - 1$. These results are rigorous, group-theoretically -- no theoretical assumptions have been made. But when one adds a single assumption motivated by QCD factorization, the discrepancy grows to $4.4\sigma$. These are the anomalies in hadronic $B$ decays. Although one cannot yet claim that new physics is present, it is clear that something very unexpected is going on.

Abstract:In this comment to the Nature paper of Bevan et al I point out that their interpretation of experimental data is based on a double counting of the `chiral anomaly' due to a vortex motion: using the calculation far away from the vortex core (Berry phase) to cancel the equivalent calculation at the core (spectral flow). The relaxation time approximation in force or momentum balance equation involved in their theory is also wrong, which has been rigorous proved in transport theory since 60's. Hence their affirmative conclusion is premature.
Anomaly-Induced Quenching of ${g_A}$ in Nuclear Matter and Impact on Search for Neutrinoless $ββ$ Decay

Abstract:How to disentangle the possible {\it genuine} quenching of $g_A$ caused by scale anomaly of QCD parameterized by the scale-symmetry-breaking quenching factor $q_{ssb}$ from nuclear correlation effects is described. This is done by matching the Fermi-liquid fixed point (FLFP) theory to the ``Extreme Single Particle (shell) Model" (acronym ESPM) in superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions in heavy doubly-magic shell nuclei. The recently experimentally observed indication for $(1-q_{ssb})\neq 0$ -- that one might identify as ``fundamental quenching ({\it FQ})" -- in certain experiments seems to be alarmingly significant. I present arguments how symmetries hidden in the matter-free vacuum can emerge and suppress such {\it FQ} in strong nuclear correlations. How to confirm or refute this observation is discussed in terms of the superallowed Gamow-Teller transition in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{100}$Sn and in the spectral shape in the multifold forbidden $\beta$ decay of $^{115}$In.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of explaining the enhancement in semileptonic decays of B̅→ D^(*)τν̅ , the anomalies induced by b→ sμ ^+μ ^- in B̅→ (K, K^*, ϕ )μ ^+μ ^- and violation of lepton universality in R_K = Br(B̅→ K μ ^+μ ^-)/Br(B̅→ K e^+e^-) within the framework of R-parity violating MSSM. The exchange of down type right-handed squark coupled to quarks and leptons yields interactions which are similar to leptoquark induced interactions that have been proposed to explain the B̅→ D^(*)τν̅ by tree level interactions and b→ s μ ^+μ ^- anomalies by loop induced interactions, simultaneously. However, the Yukawa couplings in such theories have severe constraints from other rare processes in B and D decays. Although this interaction can provide a viable solution to the R(D^(*)) anomaly, we show that with the severe constraint from B̅→ K νν̅ , it is impossible to solve the anomalies in the b→ s μ ^+μ ^- process simultaneously.
Spontaneous breaking of baryon number, baryogenesis and the bajoron

Abstract:We explore the spontaneous breaking of global baryon number for baryogenesis. We introduce a model with three majorana fermions and a complex scalar carrying baryon number charge. After symmetry breaking, the baryon asymmetry is generated below the electroweak scale via the decays of one of the majorana fermions. The main focus of the paper is the phenomenology of the Nambu--Goldstone boson of $U(1)_B$, which we call the bajoron. With small sources of explicit baryon number violation, the bajoron acquires a small mass and is generally very long-lived. The model avoids proton decay, satisfies cosmological constraints, and offers interesting collider phenomenology for the Large Hadron Collider. These long-lived particles tied to baryogenesis strongly support the development of far-detector experiments such as MATHUSLA, FASER, SHiP, and others.

Abstract:Supersymmetric models with the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking (AMSB) form for soft SUSY breaking terms arise in two different settings: (1) extra-dimensional models where SUSY breaking occurs in a sequestered sector, and (2) 4−d models with dynamical SUSY breaking in a hidden sector where scalars gain masses of order the gravitino mass m3/2 , but gaugino masses and trilinear soft terms are assumed to be of the AMSB form. Both models run into serious conflicts with (1) LHC sparticle and Higgs mass constraints, (2) constraints from winolike weakly interacting massive particle dark matter searches, and (3) bounds from naturalness. These conflicts may be avoided by introducing minor changes to the underlying phenomenological models consisting of nonuniversal bulk scalar Higgs masses and A terms, providing a setting for natural anomaly mediation (nAMSB). In nAMSB, the wino is still expected to be the lightest of the gauginos, but the Higgsinos are expected to be the lightest electroweakinos (EWinos) in accord with naturalness. We examine what sorts of spectra are expected to emerge when nAMSB arises from a string landscape setting: While model 2 can only be natural for a Higgs mass mh≲123 GeV , model 1 can accommodate naturalness along with mh∼125 GeV while still respecting LHC bounds on sparticle masses. We explore the LHC phenomenology of nAMSB models where we find that for Higgsino pair production, typically larger dilepton mass gaps arise from the soft dilepton-plus-jets signature than in models with gaugino mass unification. For wino-pair production, the higher m3/2 portion of nAMSB parameter space is excluded by recent LHC bounds from gaugino pair production searches. We characterize the dominant LHC signatures arising from the remaining lower m3/2∼90–200 TeV range of parameter space, which should be fully testable at high-luminosity LHC via EWino pair production searches. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.035011 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:We study the flavor dependent $U(1)_{B_i-L_j}$ models, where an $i$th generation of quarks and $j(\neq i)$th generation of leptons are charged. By solving the anomaly free condition for the matter sector of the SM fermions and three generations of right-handed (RH) neutrinos, we find that the $j$th generation of RH neutrino is not necessarily charged under the $U(1)_{B_i-L_j}$ gauge symmetry with the charge $-1$ and the other (neither $i$th nor $j$th) generation of RH neutrino can also be. As a general solution for the anomaly cancellation conditions, the other two RN neutrinos than the charge $-1$ RH neutrino may have non-vanishing charge and be stable due to the gauge invariance, and hence it is a candidate for dark matter (DM) in our Universe. We apply this result to a $B_3-L_2$ model and consider a light thermal DM and a solution to the muon $g-2$ anomaly. We identify the parameter region to have the DM mass range from MeV to sub-GeV and simultaneously solve the muon $g-2$ anomaly. We also derive the constraints on the gauge kinetic mixing parameter by using the latest Borexino phase-II data.

Abstract:A brief review of the current state of observed deviations of theoretical predictions from experimental data in semileptonic decays of $B$ and $B_c$ mesons is given. A theoretical analysis of these decays is carried out, taking into account the effects of new physics, which appear due to the introduction of new four-fermion operators, which are absent in the basis of the Standard Model (SM) operators. The necessary form factors are calculated within the framework of the covariant quark model developed in our papers.

Abstract:We discuss the relation between lepton number violation at high and low energies, particularly, the constraints on baryogenesis models, which would be implied by an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay. The primordial baryon asymmetry can be washed out by effective lepton number violating operators triggering neutrinoless double beta decay in combination with sphaleron processes. A generic conclusion is that popular models of baryogenesis are excluded if a non-standard mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay, i.e., other than the standard light neutrino exchange, is observed. Apart from the effective field approach, we also outline the possible extension of our arguments to a general UV-completed model.

$B$ anomalies in the post $R_{K^{(*)}}$ era

Abstract:We discuss the status of $b \to s \ell^+\ell^-$ decays in the post-$R_{K^{(*)}}$ era. The recent LHCb update of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ measurements which are now compatible with the Standard Model, constrain new physics contributions to be lepton flavor universal, allowing only small deviations from this limit. Besides the latest LHCb measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^{*}}$, we also include the recent CMS measurements of $R_K$ and of the branching ratio of $B^+ \to K^+ \mu^+\mu^-$. We present a model-independent analysis of the $b\to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ data and investigate the implications of the different sets of observables. In addition, we consider multi-dimensional fits and discuss the significance of more complex new physics scenarios compared to one- and two-dimensional scenarios.
