Engineering Fracture Mechanics
Abstract:Soundless cracking demolition agents (SCDAs) have emerged as popular alternatives to conventional blasting techniques for concrete breakage. In this study, the continuous-discontinuous element method (CDEM) was used to simulate crack propagation in three-dimensional solid domains induced by SCDAs charging. The trilinear chemical strain model calibrated by the experimental results was used to simulate the volume expansion of the SCDAs during the hydration stages. The spring broken ratio (SBR) was examined to determine the damage to the concrete block. The results indicated that the crack first initiated at the top surface and then expanded to the depth of the boreholes with time. Good agreement was achieved between the numerical and experimental results for both the evolutions of the principal strains and the appearances of fractures on the top surface. The SBR variations in the dual-hole expansion problems suggested that the crack preferred to connect the holes if their spacing was not larger than 2.5 times the diameter. The loading transfer from top to bottom was presented to demonstrate the influence of the hole depth. Multiple borehole models showed that more fragments would be generated if a staggered borehole pattern was adopted.
