Abstract:We study the mod $p$-points of the Kisin--Pappas integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type with parahoric level. We show that if the group is quasi-split, then every isogeny class contains the reduction of a CM point, proving a conjecture of Kisin--Madapusi-Pera--Shin. We furthermore show that the mod $p$ isogeny classes are of the form predicted by the Langlands--Rapoport conjecture if either the Shimura variety is proper or if the group at $p$ is unramified. The main ingredient in our work is a global argument that allows us to reduce the conjecture to the case of very special parahoric level. This case is dealt with in the appendix by Rong Zhou. As a corollary to our arguments, we determine the connected components of Ekedahl--Oort strata.

Abstract:In the paper four stratifications in the reduction modulo $p$ of a general Shimura variety are studied: the Newton stratification, the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification, the Ekedahl-Oort stratification and the Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport stratification. We formulate a system of axioms and show that these imply non-emptiness statements and closure relation statements concerning these various stratifications. These axioms are satisfied in the Siegel case.

On integral local Shimura varieties

Abstract:We give a construction of "integral local Shimura varieties" which are formal schemes that generalize the well-known integral models of the Drinfeld $p$-adic upper half spaces. The construction applies to all classical groups, at least for odd $p$. These formal schemes also generalize the formal schemes defined by Rapoport-Zink via moduli of $p$-divisible groups, and are characterized purely in group-theoretic terms. More precisely, for a local $p$-adic Shimura datum $(G, b, \mu)$ and a quasi-parahoric group scheme $\mathcal G$ for $G$, Scholze has defined a functor on perfectoid spaces which parametrizes $p$-adic shtukas. He conjectured that this functor is representable by a normal formal scheme which is locally formally of finite type and flat over $O_{\breve E}$. Scholze-Weinstein proved this conjecture when $(G, b, \mu)$ is of (P)EL type by using Rapoport-Zink formal schemes. We prove this conjecture for any $(G, \mu)$ of abelian type when $p\neq 2$, and when $p=2$ and $G$ is of type $A$ or $C$. We also relate the generic fiber of this formal scheme to the local Shimura variety, a rigid-analytic space attached by Scholze to $(G, b, \mu, {\mathcal G})$.

Abstract:We construct local models of Shimura varieties and investigate their singularities, with special emphasis on wildly ramified cases. More precisely, with the exception of odd unitary groups in residue characteristic $2$ we construct local models, show reducedness of their special fiber, Cohen$-$Macaulayness and in equi-characteristic also (pseudo-)rationality. In mixed characteristic we conjecture their (pseudo-)rationality. This is based on the construction of parahoric group schemes over two-dimensional bases for wildly ramified groups and an analysis of singularities of the attached Schubert varieties in positive characteristic using perfect geometry.

Abstract:Rapoport-Zink spaces, or more generally local Shimura varieties, are expected to provide geometric realization of the local Langlands correspondence via their $l$-adic cohomology. Along this line is a conjecture by Harris and Viehmann, which roughly says that when the underlying local Shimura datum is not basic, the $l$-adic cohomology of the local Shimura variety is parabolically induced. We verify this conjecture for Rapoport-Zink spaces which are Hodge type and Hodge-Newton reducible. The main strategy is to embed such a Rapoport-Zink space into an appropriate space of EL type, for which the conjecture is already known to hold by the work of Mantovan.

Abstract:We use the idea of splitting models to define and study a semi-stable model for unitary Shimura varieties of signature $(n-1,1)$ with maximal parahoric level structure at ramified primes. In this case, the ``naive'' splitting model defined by Pappas and Rapoport fails to be flat in a crucial way. We prove that the genuine splitting model in this case is flat with semi-stable reduction.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:We study some integral model of P.E.L. Shimura varieties of type A for ramified primes. Precisely, we look at the Pappas-Rapoport model (or splitting model) of some unitary Shimura varieties for which there is ramification in the degree 2 CM extension. We show that the model isn't smooth, but that it is normal with Cohen-Macaulay special fiber. We moreover study its special fiber by introducing a combinatorial stratification for which we can compute the closure relations. Even if there are "extra" components in special fiber, we prove that those do not contribute to mod p modular forms in regular degree. We also study the interaction of the stratification with the natural stratification given by the vanishing of some partial Hasse invariants, in the case of signature (1,n-1).

Abstract:We consider the flat moduli space of parahoric level structures on a local shtuka and show that it is representable over a smooth $p$-adic formal scheme by establishing the dilatation theory of $v$-sheaves. We apply this result to the canonical integral model of a Shimura variety at hyperspecial level and identify the flat moduli space of parahoric level structures with the canonical integral model at the corresponding parahoric level. We prove a similar result for integral models of local Shimura varieties.

Abstract:We construct local models for wildly ramified unitary similitude groups of odd dimension $n\geq 3$ with special parahoric level structure and signature $(n-1,1)$. We first give a lattice-theoretic description for parahoric subgroups using Bruhat-Tits theory in residue characteristic two, and apply them to define local models following the lead of Rapoport-Zink and Pappas-Rapoport. In our case, there are two conjugacy classes of special parahoric subgroups. We show that the local models are smooth for the one class and normal, Cohen-Macaulay for the other class. We also prove that they represent the v-sheaf local models of Scholze-Weinstein. Under some additional assumptions, we obtain an explicit moduli interpretation of the local models.

Laumon parahoric local models via quiver Grassmannians

Abstract:Local models of Shimura varieties in type A can be realized inside products of Grassmannians via certain linear algebraic conditions. Laumon suggested a generalization which can be identified with a family over a line whose general fibers are quiver Grassmannians for the loop quiver and the special fiber is a certain quiver Grassmannian for the cyclic quiver. The whole family sits inside the Gaitsgory central degeneration of the affine Grassmannians. We study the properties of the special fibers of the (complex) Laumon local models for arbitrary parahoric subgroups in type A using the machinery of quiver representations. We describe the irreducible components and the natural strata with respect to the group action for the quiver Grassmannians in question. We also construct a cellular decomposition and provide an explicit description for the corresponding poset of cells. Finally, we study the properties of the desingularizations of the irreducible components and show that the desingularization construction is compatible with the natural projections between the parahoric subgroups.

Abstract:We consider Shimura varieties associated to a unitary group of signature $(n-1, 1)$. For these varieties, we construct $p$-adic integral models over odd primes $p$ which ramify in the imaginary quadratic field with level subgroup at $p$ given by the stabilizer of a vertex lattice in the hermitian space. Our models are given by a variation of the construction of the splitting models of Pappas-Rapoport and they have a simple moduli theoretic description. By an explicit calculation, we show that these splitting models are normal, flat, Cohen-Macaulay and with reduced special fiber. In fact, they have relatively simple singularities: we show that a single blow-up along a smooth codimension one subvariety of the special fiber produces a semi-stable model. This also implies the existence of semi-stable models of the corresponding Shimura varieties.

Abstract:For the integral canonical model $\mathscr{S}_{\mathsf{K}^p}$ of a Shimura variety $\mathrm{Sh}_{\mathsf{K}_0\mathsf{K}^p}(\mathbf{G},\mathbf{X})$ of abelian type at hyperspecial level $K_0=\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, we construct a prismatic $F$-gauge model for the `universal' $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$-local system on $\mathrm{Sh}_{\mathsf{K}_0\mathsf{K}^p}(\mathbf{G},\mathbf{X})$. We use this to obtain new $p$-adic information about these Shimura varieties, notably an abelian-type analogue of the Serre--Tate theorem (realizing an expectation of Drinfeld in the abelian-type case) and a prismatic characterization of these models. To do this, we make several advances in integral $p$-adic Hodge theory, notably the development of an integral analogue of the functor $D_{\mathrm{crys}}$.
