Abstract:We study the behavior of the modular class of an orientable Poisson manifold and formulate some unimodularity criteria in the semilocal context, around a (singular) symplectic leaf. Our results generalize some known unimodularity criteria for regular Poisson manifolds related to the notion of the Reeb class. In particular, we show that the unimodularity of the transverse Poisson structure of the leaf is a necessary condition for the semilocal unimodular property. Our main tool is an explicit formula for a bigraded decomposition of modular vector fields of a coupling Poisson structure on a foliated manifold. Moreover, we also exploit the notion of the modular class of a Poisson foliation and its relationship with the Reeb class.

Abstract:This paper is intended both an introduction to the algebraic geometry of holomorphic Poisson brackets, and as a survey of results on the classification of projective Poisson manifolds that have been obtained in the past twenty years. It is based on the lecture series delivered by the author at the Poisson 2016 Summer School in Geneva. The paper begins with a detailed treatment of Poisson surfaces, including adjunction, ruled surfaces and blowups, and leading to a statement of the full birational classification. We then describe several constructions of Poisson threefolds, outlining the classification in the regular case, and the case of rank-one Fano threefolds (such as projective space). Following a brief introduction to the notion of Poisson subspaces, we discuss Bondal's conjecture on the dimensions of degeneracy loci on Poisson Fano manifolds. We close with a discussion of log symplectic manifolds with simple normal crossings degeneracy divisor, including a new proof of the classification in the case of rank-one Fano manifolds.

Abstract:We provide a general study on quadratic Poisson structures on a vector space. In particular, we obtain a decomposition for any quadratic Poisson structures. As an application, we classify all the three-dimensional quadratic Poisson structures up to a Poisson diffeomorphism.

Abstract:Brunella's classification implies that every smooth foliation on a compact complex surface admits a singular transversely projective structure. However, Biswas and Sorin's recent work shows that certain foliations on compact complex surfaces, despite possessing a singular transversely projective structure, do not admit a regular transversely projective structure. Here, we describe the smooth foliations on compact complex surfaces which fail to possess a regular transversely projective structure.

Abstract:We study the Poisson bracket invariant, which measures the level of Poisson noncommutativity of a smooth partition of unity, on closed symplectic surfaces. Motivated by a general conjecture of Polterovich [P3] and building on preliminary work of Buhovsky–Tanny [BT], we prove that for any smooth partition of unity subordinate to an open cover by discs of area at most c , and under some localization condition on the cover when the surface is a sphere, then the product of the Poisson bracket invariant with c is bounded from below by a universal constant. Similar results were obtained recently by Buhovsky–Logunov–Tanny [BLT] for open covers consisting of displaceable sets on all closed surfaces, and their approach was extended by Shi–Lu [SL] to open covers by nondisplaceable discs. We investigate the sharpness of all these results.

Abstract:In this work we present new results to produce an algorithm that returns, for any fixed pair of natural integers $K^2$ and $\chi$, all regular surfaces $S$ of general type with self-intersection $K_S^2=K^2$ and Euler characteristic $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=\chi$, that are product-quotient surfaces. The key result we obtain is an algebraic characterization of all families of regular product-quotients surfaces, up to isomorphism, arising from a pair of $G$-coverings of $\mathbb P^1$. As a consequence of our work, we provide a classification of all regular product-quotient surfaces of general type with $23\leq K^2\leq 32$ and $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=4$. Furthermore, we study their canonical map and present several new examples of surfaces of general type with a high degree of the canonical map.

Abstract:We Introduce the notion of chord diagrams on arbitrary compact (possibly punctured) oriented surfaces. In the case of the 2-spheres these are just the usual chord diagrams used in test study of Vassiliev invariants of links. We consider the algebra of chord diagrams on a surface and prove that this algebra has a natural Poisson structure. Suppose now that G is a Lie group with an invariant bilinear form on g = Lie(G). We can associate to each chord diagram (coloured by representations of G) a function on the moduli space of flat G-connections on the surface. Our main result states that this map is a Poisson algebra homomorphism. Moreover, for most classical groups we prove that any algebraic function on moduli space can be obtained this way and we conjecture that this holds for all simple groups. In this way we obtain a universal description of the Poisson algebra of the moduli space, decoupling the Lie group in question.

Abstract:New historical aspects of the classification, by Cayley and Cremona, of ruled quartic surfaces and the relation to string models and plaster models are presented. In a `modern' treatment of the classification of ruled quartic surfaces the classical one is corrected and completed. A conceptual proof is presented of a result of Rohn concerning curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$. The string models of Series XIII (of some ruled quartic surfaces) are based on Rohn's result.

Abstract:We first present an overview of our previous work on the dynamics of subgroups of automorphism groups of compact complex surfaces, together with a selection of open problems and new classification results. Then, we study two families of examples in depth: the first one comes from folding plane pentagons, and the second one is a family of groups introduced by Jérémy Blanc, which exhibits interesting new dynamical features.

Compatible Poisson structures on multiplicative quiver varieties

Abstract:Any multiplicative quiver variety is endowed with a Poisson structure constructed by Van den Bergh through reduction from a Hamiltonian quasi-Poisson structure. The smooth locus carries a corresponding symplectic form defined by Yamakama through quasi-Hamiltonian reduction. In this note, we include the Poisson structure as part of a pencil of compatible Poisson structures on the multiplicative quiver variety. The pencil is defined by reduction from a pencil of Hamiltonian quasi-Poisson structures which has dimension $\ell(\ell-1)/2$, where $\ell$ is the number of arrows in the underlying quiver. For each element of the pencil, we exhibit the corresponding compatible symplectic or quasi-Hamiltonian structure. We comment on analogous constructions for character varieties and quiver varieties. This formalism is applied to the spin Ruijsenaars-Schneider phase space in order to explain the compatibility of two Poisson structures that have recently appeared in the literature.

Abstract:Glickenstein \cite{Glickenstein} and Glickenstein-Thomas \cite{GT} introduced the discrete conformal structures on surfaces in an axiomatic approach and studied its classification. In this paper, we give a full classification of the discrete conformal structures on surfaces, which completes Glickenstein-Thomas' classification. As a result, we find some new classes of discrete conformal structures on surfaces, including some of the generalized circle packing metrics introduced by Guo-Luo \cite{GL2}. The relationships between the discrete conformal structures on surfaces and the 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry are also discussed.
