Adhesion Force and Contact Surface Area for Particles with Rough Surfaces

Abstract:In many cases, physical interaction and adhesion between surfaces in contact is dominated by van der Waals forces. The extent of these forces may be characterized and quantified by experimentally measuring the interfacial pull-off forces. But these measurements often have a very broad spread, which prevents a comprehensible characterization of the material adhesive behaviour. The high variability is generally attributed to the surface roughness and therefore the effective contact area. However, a quantitative understanding is lacking. We combined the Rumpf-Rabinovich theory with JKR model to take into account the surface roughness and deformation simultaneously, proposed the concept of characteristic asperity and adhesiveness, and applied the JKR model on the characteristic asperities. The acquired adhesiveness quantitatively reflects the influences of surface roughness, elastic deformability, and interfacial surface energy on the adhesive behaviour. The effective interfacial contact area has become accountable. An example is provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed theory.
