Energy Spectrum and Mass Composition around the Knee by EAS Measurements

Abstract:Primary cosmic ray particles above energies of about 100 TeV are investigated by large-area ground based detector installations, observing various components of the development of extensive air-showers (EAS). By such an indirect access to the primary cosmic ray spectrum a steepening of the power-law falls off at around 3-5 PeV, known as the {\em knee} has been identified. Different experimental techniques are used to deduce mass- and energy-sensitive observables of EAS experiments. The experiments involve measurements of secondary particle distributions at various observation levels and of muons deep underground as well as of observables reconstructed by measuring the air Cherenkov light emitted with the shower development in the atmosphere. Recently methods for analysing multidimensional distributions get favoured since they are able to take into account the correlations between different observables and the influence of large intrinsic fluctuations of the air-shower development. Additionally the use of a larger set of observables provides the possibility to test simultaneously the consistency of the Monte-Carlo models underlying the reconstruction procedures. By many experiments the existence of the knee in the primary energy spectrum is confirmed and a tendency of an increasing mean mass above the knee energy is indicated. Recent results show that the knee originates from a decrease of the flux of light primary particles, whereas heavy cosmic ray particles seem to miss a kink in the energy range of 1 and 10 PeV.

Abstract:The most recent experimental results on the cosmic ray composition and energy spectrum above 1 TeV are reviewed and discussed. All data agree on the presence of the so-called “knee” at an energy Eκ ⋍ 3 1015eV; the knee is seen in all the components of the Extensive Air Showers. These results support the hypothesis of an astrophysical origin of the knee, while no new features in the hadronic interactions at high energies are envisaged. The cosmic ray composition below and above the knee region is still an open question. According to most experiments, the knee seems to be due to the light component of the primary beam, with a composition getting heavier above the knee. However, results contradicting this conclusion have to be considered and understood.

Abstract:The all-particle spectrum of cosmic rays measured at Earth has a knee-like feature around 4 PeV. A priori, it is not clear if this is a local feature specific to the Solar neighbourhood in the Milky Way, or if it is a generic property of the Galactic cosmic-ray spectrum. We argue that combining gamma-ray and cosmic-ray data of LHAASO indicates that the knee is a local feature. In order to demonstrate this, we derive a model for the local cosmic-ray spectrum and composition, consistent with the recent LHAASO measurements of the all-particle spectrum and the mean logarithmic mass in the knee region. We calculate the spectrum of diffuse gamma-ray emission based on this model and find that the expected spectral shape of the diffuse gamma-ray flux disagrees with the LHAASO measurements of the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the 10-100 TeV energy range in the inner and outer Galaxy. We determine the break energy in the CR spectrum expected from these gamma-ray data and find it an energy ten times lower than obtained from local measurements.

Abstract:The cosmic ray flux measured by the Telescope Array Low Energy Extension (TALE) exhibits three spectral features: the knee, the dip in the $10^{16}$ eV decade, and the second knee. Here the spectrum has been measured for the first time using fluorescence telescopes, which provide a calorimetric, model-independent result. The spectrum appears to be a rigidity-dependent cutoff sequence, where the knee is made by the hydrogen and helium portions of the composition, the dip comes from the reduction in composition from helium to metals, the rise to the second knee occurs due to intermediate range nuclei, and the second knee is the iron knee.

Abstract:The differential energy spectrum of cosmic rays exhibits a change of slope, called "knee" of the spectrum, around the nominal energy of 3 x 10^15 eV, and individual "knees" for single ions, at different energies. The present work reports a detailed account of the characteristics and the origin of the knees for Helium and Iron. Current observational data regarding the magnetic field, the insterstellar matter density, the size of the Galaxy and the galactic wind, are incorporated in appropriate algorithms which allow to simulate millions of cosmic-ion trajectories in the disk. Bundles of ion trajectories define galactic regions called basins utilized in the present analysis of the knees. The fundamental role of the nuclear cross sections in the origin of the helium and iron knees is demonstrated and highlighted. The results of the calculation are compared with the experimental data in the energy interval 10^12 eV - 5 x 10^17 eV. There is a fair agreement between the computed and measured energy spectra of Helium and Iron; rather surprisingly their relative intensities are also in accord with those computed here. The results suggest that acceleration mechanisms in the disk are extraneous to the origin of the "knees".
What can cosmic-ray knees reveal about source populations?

Abstract:Cosmic ray (CR) knees (spectral steepenings) encode information on CR accelerator populations. We seek population features that imprint onto knee observables in a manner that is robust enough to be discernible even in the presence of significant systematics in CR data. In particular, we explore how diversity among population members could imprint on the knee phenomenology, under the assumption that a knee is due to a fixed-rigidity cutoff in the source spectra. We use a simple theoretical model for a population of CR accelerators. Each population member accelerates CR to a power-law spectrum, up to a cutoff rigidity. We allow for variance among members, in cutoff rigidity and power-law slope. We find that: (a) the slope step of the spectrum is $\sim 0.5$, decreasing weakly with increasing spread in either property; (b) composition always breaks first; (c) the difference between the break energies in composition and flux increases with increasing diversity; (d) composition and flux break together only if population diversity is minimal. These trends are robust under our assumptions; deviations from them would indicate more complex physics than encoded in our simple model. Comparing these trends with observed CR knees, we conclude that: (i) the primary knee at $\sim 4\times10^{15}$ eV is consistent with a constant-rigidity cutoff according to KASCADE-Grande data processed with post-LHC hadronic models, but not according to other datasets; (ii) the second knee at $\sim 5 \times 10^{17}$ eV requires more complexity than our model; (iii) the spectral feature identified by Auger at $\sim 10^{19}$ eV is consistent with a constant-rigidity source cutoff only if there is a substantial spread in both cutoff rigidity and slope. Interestingly, a significant spread in slope would also result in spectral curvature before the break, which would in turn be contributing to the ankle feature.

Abstract:The energy spectra for five elemental groups (p, He, C, Si, Fe) of cosmic rays, are simulated. Calculations are based on an analysis of superposition of few cosmic ray sources (Supernovae of different types) and principles of diffusive shock acceleration. Results of the analysis in the knee region show that summarizing energy spectra for elemental mass groups of cosmic rays can have significant oscillations of spectral index $\gamma$. Moreover, a kink (increasing $\gamma$) in Fe spectrum at energy $2\cdot 10^{15}$ eV, is discovered. In order to distinguish from the knee (decreasing $\gamma$) the kink can be called an anti-knee (increasing $\gamma$).

Abstract:The author has suggested that the knee phenomenon in the cosmic ray energy spectrum at 3 PeV can be explained as a split between a radiation-dominated expansion and a matter-dominated expansion of an expanding heat bath. The model proposed in 1985, in fact, predicted that high energy cosmic rays are emitted from AGN, massive black holes, in agreement with recent data from the Pierre Auger Observatory. Similarly, the ankle phenomenon at 3 EeV is shown to be explained by a split between inflational expansion and ordinary material expansion of the expanding heat bath, not unlike that in the expansion of the universe. All the spectral indicies in the respective regions of the energy spectra agree with the theoretical calculation from the respective expansion rates. It is shown that the ankle energy is approximately equal to the threshold energy of cosmic ray production of an electron positron pair on the cmb photon.

Abstract:The paper discusses an approach that made it possible to estimate the distance to the nearest pevatrons, which form a knee in the spectrum of the cosmic ray nucleon component of about $4$ PeV. It is based on the spectra of nucleons and electrons obtained by the authors in the framework of the superdiffusion model of nonclassical cosmic rays diffusion, which have a knee, on the assumption that nucleons and electrons are accelerated by the same type sources and their propagation in an inhomogeneous turbulent galactic medium is characterized by the same diffusion coefficient, and also on the knee in the spectrum of the electronic component in the region of $0.9$ TeV, established in the DAMPE experiment. It is shown that pevatrons, which form a knee in the spectrum of the cosmic ray nucleon component of about $4$ PeV, are located at distances of the order of $0.75$ kpc from the Earth.

The reason is very simple: the position of the "iron knee" depends on an answer to the questions: "What do we see at 3-5 PeV? Model of Cosmic Ray Propagation in the Milky Way at the Knee

Abstract:We present a new model of anisotropic cosmic ray propagation in the Milky Way, where cosmic rays are injected at discrete transient sources in the disc and propagated in the Galactic magnetic field. In the framework of our model, we show that the cosmic ray spectrum is time-dependent and space-dependent around the energy of the knee. It has a major contribution of one or a few nearby recent sources at any given location in the Galaxy, in particular at the position of the Solar system. We find that the distribution of $\sim$ PeV cosmic rays in our Galaxy is significantly clumpy and inhomogeneous, and therefore substantially different from the smoother distribution of GeV cosmic rays. Our findings have important implications for the calculation and future interpretation of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray and neutrino fluxes at very high energies.

Abstract:The main purpose of this work is to find the causes of the break of the cosmic ray spectrum at an energy of 3 PeV, which is called the knee. The solution of the problem is associated with the determination of the nuclear composition of cosmic rays in the knee area. The conclusions of this work are based on the analysis of the characteristics of the EAS cores obtained using X-ray emulsion chambers. According to these data, a number of anomalous effects are observed in the knee region, such as scaling violation in the spectra of secondary hadrons, an excess of muons in EAS with gamma families and others. At the same energies equivalent to 1-100 PeV the laboratory system colliders show scaling behavior. So analysis of the data on the EAS cores suggests that the knee in their spectrum is formed by a component of cosmic rays of a non-nuclear nature, possibly consisting of stable (quasi-stable) particles of hypothetical strange quark matter, which named strangelets. This is the only model of the knee compatible with the magnetic rigidity of the nuclear spectra break R=100 TV. In fact, stranglets are stable heavy quasi-nuclei with a positive electric charge of Z=30-1000, so the mechanism of their acceleration coincides with the nuclear one. The break of the cosmic ray spectrum can be associated with a significantly larger mass of strangelets compared to nuclei.

Abstract:The knee phenomenon of the cosmic ray spectrum, which plays an important role in studying the acceleration mechanism of cosmic rays, is still an unsolved mystery. We try to reconcile the knee spectra measured by ARGO-YBJ and Tibet-III. A simple broken power-law model fails to explain the experimental data. Therefore a modified broken power-law model with non-linear acceleration effects is adopted, which can describe the sharp knee structure. This model predicts that heavy elements dominate at the knee.

Abstract:Two structures in the all-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays, the knee at 4 PeV and the second knee around 400 PeV are proposed to be explained by a phenomenological model, the poly gonato model, connecting direct and indirect measurements. Within this approach the knee is caused by a successive cut-off of the flux for individual elements starting with protons at 4.5 PeV. The second knee is interpreted as the end of the stable nuclei of the periodic table. To check some key features of this model calculations of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and the propagation path length at energies from 10^14 to 10^19 eV have been performed within the framework of a combined approach based on the diffusion model of cosmic rays and a direct simulation of charged-particle trajectories in the Galaxy.

Constraining the Position of the Knee in the Galactic Cosmic-Ray Spectrum with Ultra-high-energy Diffuse γ-Rays

Abstract:The diffuse γ-ray emission was measured up to 957 TeV by the Tibet-ASγ experiment recently. Assuming that it is produced by the hadronic interaction between cosmic-ray nuclei and the interstellar medium, it requires that the cosmic-ray nuclei should be accelerated well beyond PeV energies. Measurements of the cosmic-ray spectra for different species show diverse results at present. The Tibet experiments showed that the spectrum of proton plus helium has an early knee below PeV. If this is correct, the diffuse γ-ray emission would suggest an additional component of Galactic cosmic rays above PeV energies. This second component may originate from a source population of so-called PeVatrons revealed by recent ultra-high-energy γ-ray observations and could contribute to the cosmic-ray fluxes up to the energy of the second knee. On the other hand, the KASCADE measurement showed that the knee of protons is higher than PeV. In this case, the diffuse γ-rays observed by Tibet-ASγ can be well accounted for by only one cosmic-ray component. These two scenarios (i.e., the Tibet and KASCADE knees) could be distinguished by the spectral structures of diffuse γ-rays and cosmic-ray nuclei. Future measurements of spectra of individual nuclei by HERD and LHAASO experiments and diffuse γ-rays by LHAASO can jointly constrain these two scenarios.

Properties of secondary components in extensive air shower of cosmic rays in knee energy region

Abstract:The knee of cosmic ray spectra reflects the maximum energy accelerated by galactic cosmic ray sources or the limit to the ability of galaxy to bind cosmic rays. The measuring of individual energy spectra is a crucial tool to ascertain the origin of the knee. The Extensive Air Shower of cosmic rays in the knee energy region is simulated via CORSIKA software. The energy resolution for different secondary components and primary nuclei identification capability are studied. The energy reconstruction by using electromagnetic particles in the energy around knee is better than by using other secondary particles. The resolution is 10-19 percent for proton, and 4-8 percent for iron. For the case of primary nuclei identification capability, the discriminability of density of muons is best both at low (around 100 TeV) and high (around 10 PeV) energy, the discriminability of the shape of lateral distribution of electron and gamma-rays are good at low energy and the discriminability of density of neutrons is good at high energy. The differences between the lateral distributions of secondary particles simulated by EPOS-LHC and QGSJet-II-04 hadronic model are also studied. The results in this work can provide important information for selecting the secondary components and detector type during energy reconstruction and identifying the primary nuclei of cosmic rays in the knee region.
