Abstract:The early papers of Hyman Bass in the late 50s and the early 60s leading up to his pioneering work in algebraic K-theory have played an important and very special role in ring theory and the theory of projective (and injective) modules. In this article, we give a general survey of Bass's fundamental contributions in this early period of his work, and explain how much this work has influenced and shaped the thinking of subsequent researchers in the area.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:We introduce a hyperbolic reflection group trick which builds closed aspherical manifolds out of compact ones and preserves hyperbolicity, residual finiteness, and—for almost all primes p — -homology growth above the middle dimension. We use this trick, embedding theory and manifold topology to construct Gromov hyperbolic 7-manifolds that do not virtually fiber over a circle out of graph products of large finite groups.

Abstract:We give a constructive proof of the theorem of Bass and Milnor saying that if $G$ is a finite abelian group then the Bass units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ generate a subgroup of finite index in its units group $\U(\Z G)$. Our proof provides algorithms to represent some units that contribute to only one simple component of $\Q G$ and generate a subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ as product of Bass units. We also obtain a basis $B$ formed by Bass units of a free abelian subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ and give, for an arbitrary Bass unit $b$, an algorithm to express $b^{\varphi(|G|)}$ as a product of a trivial unit and powers of at most two units in this basis $B$.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring admitting a dualizing complex and let $\mathfrak p$ be a prime ideal of $R$. In this paper we investigate when $G(R/\frak p)$ is an $R_{\frak p}$-module. We give some necessary and sufficient conditions under which $G(R/\frak p)$ is an $R_{\frak p}$-module. We also study the Bass numbers of $G(R/\frak p)$ and we show that if ${\rm Gid}_RR/\frak p$ is finite, then $\mu^i(\frak q,G(R/\frak p))$ is finite for all $i\geq 0$ and all $\frak q\in{\rm Spec} R$. If ${\rm Gpd}_RR/\frak p$ is finite, then $\mu^i(\frak p,G(R/\frak p))$ is finite for all $i\geq 0$. We define a subring $S(\frak p)_{\frak p}$ of ${\rm End}_{R_{\frak p}}(G(R_{\frak p}/\frak pR_{\frak p}))$ and we show that it is noetherian and contains a subring which is a quotient of $\widehat{R_{\frak p}}$.

Abstract:Athanasiadis [Ehrhart polynomials, simplicial polytopes, magic squares and a conjecture of Stanley, J. Reine Angew. Math., to appear.] studies an effective technique to show that Gorenstein sequences coming from compressed polytopes are unimodal. In the present paper we will use such the technique to find a rich class of Gorenstein toric rings with unimodal h-vectors arising from finite graphs.

Abstract:We consider a variant of the ring of components of Hurwitz spaces introduced by Ellenberg, Venkatesh and Westerland. By focusing on Hurwitz spaces classifying covers of the projective line, the resulting ring of components is commutative, which lets us study it from the point of view of algebraic geometry and relate its geometric properties to numerical invariants involved in our previously obtained asymptotic counts. Specifically, we describe a stratification of the prime spectrum of the ring of components, and we compute the dimensions and degrees of the strata. Using the stratification, we give a complete description of the spectrum in some cases.

Abstract:We introduce the Habiro ring of a number field $\mathbb{K}$ and modules over it graded by $K_3(\mathbb{K})$. Elements of these modules are collections of power series at each complex root of unity that arithmetically glue with each other after applying a Frobenius endomorphism, and after dividing at each prime by a collection of series that depends solely on an element of the Bloch group. We prove that the perturbative Chern-Simons invariants of knots and 3-manifolds are elements of these modules and identify these elements with expansions of certain admissible series of Kontsevich-Soibelman at roots of unity, suggesting that some Donaldson-Thomas invariants have arithmetic meaning and that some elements of the Habiro ring of a number field have enumerative meaning.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a regular local ring containing a field, let $I$ be an ideal with $d=\text{ht}{I}$, and assume $\text{ht}{p}=d$ for every minimal prime $p$ of $I$. We compute the Bass numbers $\mu^{0}(q,H_{I}^{d}(R))$ and $\mu^{1}(q,H_{I}^{d}(R))$ for all primes $q$. We then study $\mu^{2}(q,H_{I}^{d}(R))$ by considering the associated primes of $H_{I}^{d+1}(R)$.

Abstract:Distinctive characteristics of Iwanaga‚ÄďGorenstein rings are typically understood through their intrinsic symmetry. We show that several of those that pertain to the Gorenstein global dimensions carry over to the one-sided situation, even without the noetherian hypothesis. Our results yield new relations among homological invariants related to the Gorenstein property, not only Gorenstein global dimensions but also the suprema of projective/injective dimensions of injective/projective modules and finitistic dimensions.

Abstract:First we study the Gorenstein cohomological dimension ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ of groups $G$ over coefficient rings $R$, under changes of groups and rings; a characterization for finiteness of ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ is given. Some results in literature obtained over the coefficient ring $\mathbb{Z}$ or rings of finite global dimension are generalized to more general cases. Moreover, we establish a model structure on the weakly idempotent complete exact category $\mathcal{F}ib$ consisting of fibrant $RG$-modules, and show that the homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is triangle equivalent to both the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{C}of}(RG)$ of Benson's cofibrant modules, and the stable module category ${\rm StMod}(RG)$. The relation between cofibrant modules and Gorenstein projective modules is discussed, and we show that under some conditions such that ${\rm Gcd}_RG<\infty$, ${\rm Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein projective $RG$-modules, the singularity category, and the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of projective $RG$-modules.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obtaining Auslander-Solberg and Kong type results.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a dense countable subgroup of $\mathbb{R}$. Then, consider $IE(\Gamma)$; the group of piecewise linear bijections of $[0,1]$ with finitely many angles, all in $\Gamma$. We introduce and systematically study a family of partial transformation groupoids coming from inverse semigroups, $\mathcal{G}_\Gamma$, that realise $IE(\Gamma)$ as a topological full group. This new perspective on the groupoid models $\mathcal{G}_\Gamma$ of $IE(\Gamma)$ allows us to better understand the underlying C*-algebras and to compute homology. We show that $H_*(\mathcal{G}_\Gamma)=H_{*+1}(\Gamma)$. We show $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}_\Gamma)$ is classifiable in the sense of the Elliott classification program of C$^*$-algebras. We then classify these groups via the Elliott invariant, showing $IE(\Gamma) \cong IE(\Gamma') \Leftrightarrow \Gamma=\Gamma'$ as subsets of $\mathbb{R}$. We relate the K-Theory of the reduced C$^*$ -algebras to groupoid homology via Matui's HK Conjecture. We relate the homology of $IE(\Gamma)$ to the homology of $\Gamma$ using the recent framework developed by Li. We investigate in greater detail three key cases, namely if $\Gamma \subset \mathbb{Q}$, if $\Gamma \cong \mathbb{Z}^n$, and if $\Gamma$ is a ring. For these three cases, we study homology in greater detail and find explicit generating sets.

Abstract:Creation operators act on symmetric functions to build Schur functions, Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and related symmetric functions one row at a time. Haglund, Morse, Zabrocki, and others have studied more general symmetric functions $H_{\alpha}$, $C_{\alpha}$, and $B_{\alpha}$ obtained by applying any sequence of creation operators to $1$. We develop new combinatorial models for the Schur expansions of these and related symmetric functions using objects called abacus-histories. These formulas arise by chaining together smaller abacus-histories that encode the effect of an individual creation operator on a given Schur function. We give a similar treatment for operators such as multiplication by $h_m$, $h_m^{\perp}$, $\omega$, etc., which serve as building blocks to construct the creation operators. We use involutions on abacus-histories to give bijective proofs of properties of the Bernstein creation operator and Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by three-row partitions.
