Abstract:A well known theorem of Burns and Romanovskii states that a free product of subgroup separable groups is itself subgroup separable. We provide a proof using the language of immersions and coverings of graphs of groups, due to Bass.

Abstract:We give new proofs of two results of Stafford, which generalize two famous Theorems of Serre and Bass regarding projective modules. Our techniques are inspired by the theory of basic elements. Using these methods we further generalize Serre's Splitting Theorem by imposing a condition to the splitting maps, which has an application to the case of Cartier algebras.

Abstract:Exploring Bass' Triangulability Problem on unipotent algebraic subgroups of the affine Cremona groups, we prove a triangulability criterion, the existence of nontriangulable connected solvable affine algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups, and stable triangulability of such subgroups; in particular, in the stable range we answer Bass' Triangulability Problem is the affirmative. To this end we prove a theorem on invariant subfields of $1$-extensions. We also obtain a general construction of all rationally triangulable subgroups of the Cremona groups and, as an application, classify rationally triangulable connected one-dimensional unipotent affine algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups up to conjugacy.

Abstract:In this paper a Bass-Serre theory in the groupoid setting is developed and a structure theorem is established. Any groupoid action without inversion of edges on a forest induces a graph of groupoids, while any graph of groupoids satisfying certain hypothesis admits a canonical associated groupoid, called the fundamental groupoid, and a forest, called the Bass-Serre forest, such that the fundamental groupoid acts on the Bass-Serre forest. The structure theorem states that these processes are mutually inverse.

Abstract:We give a constructive proof of the theorem of Bass and Milnor saying that if $G$ is a finite abelian group then the Bass units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ generate a subgroup of finite index in its units group $\U(\Z G)$. Our proof provides algorithms to represent some units that contribute to only one simple component of $\Q G$ and generate a subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ as product of Bass units. We also obtain a basis $B$ formed by Bass units of a free abelian subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ and give, for an arbitrary Bass unit $b$, an algorithm to express $b^{\varphi(|G|)}$ as a product of a trivial unit and powers of at most two units in this basis $B$.

Supper Bassian and Nearly Generalized Bassian Abelian Groups

Abstract:In connection to two recent publications of ours in Arch. Math. Basel (2021) and Acta Math. Hung. (2022), respectively, and in regard to the results obtained in Arch. Math. Basel (2012), we have the motivation to study the near property of both Bassian and generalized Bassian groups. Concretely, we prove that if an arbitrary reduced group has the property that all of its proper subgroups are generalized Bassian, then it is also generalized Bassian itself, that is, if G is an arbitrary nearly generalized Bassian group, then either G is a quasi-cyclic group or G is generalized Bassian of finite torsion-free rank. Moreover, we show that there is a complete description of the so-called super Bassian groups, that are those groups whose epimorphic images are all Basian, and give their full characterization. Also, we establish that the hereditary property of Bassian groups gives nothing new as it coincides with the ordinary Bassian property.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$, we denote by ${\sf d}(G)$ and by ${\sf E}(G)$, respectively, the small Davenport constant and the Gao constant of $G$. Let $C_n$ be the cyclic group of order $n$ and let $G_{m,n,s} = C_n \rtimes_s C_m$ be a metacyclic group. In [J. Bass; {\em Improving the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem for some non-abelian groups.} J. Number Theory {\bf 126} (2007), 217-236, Conjecture 17], Bass conjectured that ${\sf d}(G_{m,n,s}) = m+n-2$ and ${\sf E}(G_{m,n,s}) = mn+m+n-2$ provided $ord_n(s) = m$. In this paper, we show that the assumption $ord_n(s) = m$ is essential and cannot be removed. Moreover, if we suppose that Bass' conjecture holds for $G_{m,n,s}$ and the $mn$-product-one free sequences of maximal length are well behaved, then Bass conjecture also holds for $G_{2m,2n,r}$, where $r^2 \equiv s \pmod n$.

Abstract:We investigate the question of when free structures of infinite rank (in a variety) possess model-theoretic properties like categoricity in higher power, saturation, or universality. Concentrating on left $R$-modules we show, among other things, that the free module of infinite rank $R^{(\kappa)}$ embeds every $\kappa$-generated flat left $R$-module iff $R$ is left perfect. Using a Bass module corresponding to a descending chain of principal right ideals, we construct a model of the theory $T$ of $R^{(\kappa)}$ whose projectivity is equivalent to left perfectness, which allows to add a "stronger" equivalent condition: $R^{(\kappa)}$ embeds every $\kappa$-generated flat left $R$-module which is a model of $T$. In addition, we extend the model-theoretic construction of this Bass module to arbitrary descending chains of pp formulas, resulting in a `Bass theory' of pure-projective modules. We put this new theory to use by reproving an old result of Daniel Simson about pure-semisimple rings and Mittag-Leffler modules.

Abstract:Trying to finalize in some way the present subject, this paper targets to generalize substantially the notions of Bassian and co-Bassian groups by introducing the so-called finitely (co-)Bassian groups, semi (co-)Bassian groups, fully generalized (co-)Bassian groups, absolutely generalized (co-)Bassian groups and establishing their crucial properties and characterizations. In fact, some of the concepts give nothing new by coinciding in the reduced case with the well-known (co-)Bassian property. However, in some of the definitions, the situation is slightly more complicated and we obtain a few new and interesting things by showing that the extensions of the Bassian and co-Bassian properties are totally distinct each other.

A proof of the Lewis-Reiner-Stanton conjecture for the Borel subgroup

Abstract:For each parabolic subgroup $P$ of the general linear group $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$, a conjecture due to Lewis, Reiner and Stanton \cite{LewisReinerStanton2017} predicts a formula for the Hilbert series of the space of invariants $\mathcal{Q}_m(n)^{P}$ where $\mathcal{Q}_m(n)$ is the quotient ring $\mathbb{F}_q[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/(x_1^{q^m},\ldots,x_n^{q^m})$. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for the Borel subgroup $B$ by constructing a linear basis for $mathcal{Q}_m(n)^B$. The construction is based on an operator $\delta$ which produces new invariants from old invariants of lower ranks. We also upgrade the conjecture of Lewis, Reiner and Stanton by proposing an explicit basis for the space of invariants for each parabolic subgroup.

Abstract:We prove a rigidity theorem for morphisms from products of open subschemes of the projective line into solvable groups not containing a copy of $\Ga$ (for example, wound unipotent groups). As a consequence, we deduce several structural results about unirational group schemes, including that unirationality for group schemes descends through separable extensions. We also apply the main result to prove that permawound unipotent groups are unirational and -- when wound -- commutative.

Interestingly, our proof is purely combinatorial and does not use much group theory.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:A theorem of Z. Arad and E. Fisman establishes that if $A$ and $B$ are two conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that either $AB=A\cup B$ or $AB=A^{-1} \cup B$, then $G$ cannot be non-abelian simple. We demonstrate that, in fact, $\langle A\rangle = \langle B\rangle$ is solvable, the elements of $A$ and $B$ are $p$-elements for some prime $p$, and $\langle A\rangle $ is $p$-nilpotent. Moreover, under the second assumption, it turns out that $A=B$ and this is the only possible case. This research is done by appealing to recently developed techniques and results that are based on the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.

Abstract:Abstract We study direct-sum decompositions of torsion-free, finitely generated modules over a (commutative) Bass ring R through the factorization theory of the corresponding monoid T ( R ). Results of Levy–Wiegand and Levy–Odenthal together with a study of the local case yield an explicit description of T ( R ). The monoid is typically neither factorial nor cancellative. Nevertheless, we construct a transfer homomorphism to a monoid of graph agglomerations—a natural class of monoids serving as combinatorial models for the factorization theory of T ( R ). As a consequence, the monoid T ( R ) is transfer Krull of finite type and several finiteness results on arithmetical invariants apply. We also establish results on the elasticity of T ( R ) and characterize when T ( R ) is half-factorial. (Factoriality, that is, torsion-free Krull–Remak–Schmidt–Azumaya, is characterized by a theorem of Levy–Odenthal.) The monoids of graph agglomerations introduced here are also of independent interest.

Abstract:We establish a general spectral gap theorem for actions of products of groups which may replace Kazhdan's property (T) in various situations. As a main application, we prove that a confined subgroup of an irreducible lattice in a higher rank semisimple Lie group is of finite index. This significantly strengthens the classical normal subgroup theorem of Margulis and removes the property (T) assumption from the recent counterpart result of Fraczyk and Gelander. We further show that any confined discrete subgroup of a higher rank semisimple Lie group satisfying a certain irreducibility condition is an irreducible lattice. This implies a variant of the Stuck-Zimmer conjecture under a strong irreducibility assumption of the action.
