Abstract:We prove that, under mild assumptions, a lattice in a product of semi-simple Lie group and a totally disconnected locally compact group is, in a certain sense, arithmetic. We do not assume the lattice to be finitely generated or the ambient group to be compactly generated.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group of Lie type and $S$ a subset of $G$ of size at least two then $G$ is a product of at most $c\log|G|/\log|S|$ conjugates of $S$, where $c$ depends only on the Lie rank of $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Liebeck, Nikolov and Shalev in the case of families of simple groups of Lie type of bounded rank.

Abstract:The Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture [LNS12] asserts that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ and any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|\geq 2$, $G$ is the product of at most $N\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}$ conjugates of $A$, for some absolute constant $N$. For $G$ of Lie type, we prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is some $N_{\varepsilon}$ for which $G$ is the product of at most $N_{\varepsilon}\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}\right)^{1+\varepsilon}$ conjugates of either $A$ or $A^{-1}$. For symmetric sets, this improves on results of Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev [LNS12] and Gill, Pyber, Short, and Szabó [GPSS13]. During the preparation of this paper, the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture was completed by Lifshitz [Lif24]. Both papers use [GLPS24] as a starting point. Lifshitz's argument uses heavy machinery from representation theory to complete the conjecture, whereas this paper achieves a more modest result by rather elementary combinatorial arguments.

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the classical Klein-Maskit combination theorem, in the free product case, in the setting of Anosov subgroups. Namely, if $\Gamma_A$ and $\Gamma_B$ are Anosov subgroups of a semisimple Lie group $G$ of noncompact type, then under suitable topological assumptions, the group generated by $\Gamma_A$ and $\Gamma_B$ in $G$ is again Anosov, and is naturally isomorphic to the free product $\Gamma_A*\Gamma_B$. Such a generalization was conjectured in our previous article with Bernhard Leeb (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1805.07374" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1805.07374">arXiv:1805.07374</a>).

Abstract:We prove a product theorem for sublinear bilipschitz equivalences which generalizes the classical work of Kapovich, Kleiner and Leeb on quasiisometries between product spaces. Independently we develop a new tool, based on a theorem of Cornulier on sublinear bilipschitz equivalences between solvable Lie groups, to evaluate the distortion of certain subgroups in central extensions. This is useful to provide lower bounds on Dehn functions. Building on work of Cornulier and Tessera, we compute the Dehn functions of all simply connected solvable Lie groups of exponential growth up to dimension $5$. We employ our product theorem to distinguish up to quasiisometry certain families among these groups which share the same dimension, cone-dimension and Dehn function. Finally, using a theorem of Peng together with our computations of cone-dimensions and Dehn functions, we establish the quasiisometric rigidity of the rank-two, five-dimensional solvable Lie group acting simply transitively by isometries on the horosphere in general position inside the product of three real hyperbolic planes.

Abstract:We prove a general combination theorem for discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ preserving properly convex open subsets in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, in the spirit of Klein and Maskit. We use it in particular to prove that a free product of two $(\mathbb{Z}$-)linear groups is again ($\mathbb{Z}$-)linear, and to construct Zariski-dense discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ which are not lattices but contain a lattice of a smaller higher-rank simple Lie group. We also establish a version of our combination theorem for discrete groups that are convex cocompact in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in the sense of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.08711" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.08711">arXiv:1704.08711</a>. In particular, we prove that a free product of two convex cocompact groups is convex cocompact, which implies that the free product of two Anosov groups is Anosov. We also prove a virtual amalgamation theorem over convex cocompact subgroups generalizing work of Baker-Cooper.

Abstract:Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev conjectured that for every subset A of a finite simple group S with |A|>1, there exist O( log|S| / log|A| ) conjugates of A whose product is S. This paper is a companion to [Lifshitz: Completing the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture] and together they prove the conjecture. In this paper we prove the conjecture in the regime where $|A|>|S|^c$ for an absolute constant c>0. We also prove that the following Skew Product Theorem holds for all finite simple groups. Namely we show that either the product of two conjugates of A has size at least $|A|^{1.49}$, or S is the product of boundedly many conjugates of A.

A Duflo Star Product for Poisson Groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite-dimensional Poisson algebraic, Lie or formal group. We show that the center of the quantization of $G$ provided by an Etingof-Kazhdan functor is isomorphic as an algebra to the Poisson center of the algebra of functions on $G$. This recovers and generalizes Duflo's theorem which gives an isomorphism between the center of the enveloping algebra of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{a}$ and the subalgebra of ad-invariant in the symmetric algebra of $\mathfrak{a}$. As our proof relies on Etingof-Kazhdan construction it ultimately depends on the existence of Drinfeld associators, but otherwise it is a fairly simple application of graphical calculus. This shed some lights on Alekseev-Torossian proof of the Kashiwara-Vergne conjecture, and on the relation observed by Bar-Natan-Le-Thurston between the Duflo isomorphism and the Kontsevich integral of the unknot.

Spectral gap for products and a strong normal subgroup theorem

Abstract:We establish a general spectral gap theorem for actions of products of groups which may replace Kazhdan's property (T) in various situations. As a main application, we prove that a confined subgroup of an irreducible lattice in a higher rank semisimple Lie group is of finite index. This significantly strengthens the classical normal subgroup theorem of Margulis and removes the property (T) assumption from the recent counterpart result of Fraczyk and Gelander. We further show that any confined discrete subgroup of a higher rank semisimple Lie group satisfying a certain irreducibility condition is an irreducible lattice. This implies a variant of the Stuck-Zimmer conjecture under a strong irreducibility assumption of the action.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth, geometrically connected variety over a p-adic local field. We show that the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X (in both the etale and crystalline settings) satisfies the weight-monodromy conjecture, following Vologodsky. We deduce (in the etale setting) that Frobenii act semisimply on the Lie algebra of the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X, and (in the crystalline setting) that the same is true for a K-linear power of the crystalline Frobenius. We give applications to the representability and geometry of the Selmer varieties appearing in the Chabauty-Kim program, even in cases of bad reduction.
Completing the proof of the Liebeck--Nikolov--Shalev conjecture

Abstract:Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev conjectured the existence of an absolute constant $C>0$, such that for every subset $A$ of a finite simple group $G$ with $|A|\ge 2$, there exists $C\log|G|/\log|A|$ conjugates of $A$ whose product is $G$. This paper is a companion to \cite{GLPS}, and together they prove the conjecture. To prove the conjecture, we establish the following skew-product theorem. We show that there exists $ c > 0 $ such that for all $ \epsilon > 0 $ and subsets $ A, B \subseteq G $ of finite simple groups of Lie type, if $ |B| < |G|^{1 - \epsilon} $, then $ |A^{\sigma} B| > |B||A|^{c \epsilon} $ for some $ \sigma \in G $. This result, along with its more involved analogue for alternating groups, constitutes the main contribution of this paper. Our proof leverages deep results from character theory alongside the probabilistic method.

Non-null framed bordant simple Lie groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a compact simple Lie group equipped with the left invariant framing $L$. It is known that there are several groups $G$ such that $(G, L)$ is non-null framed bordant. Previously we gave an alternative proof of these results using the decomposition formula of its bordism class into a Kronecker product by E. Ossa. In this note we propose a verification formula by reconsidering it, through a little more ingenious in the use of this product formula, and try to apply it to the non-null bordantness results above.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Product theorems via semidefinite programming

Abstract:The tendency of semidefinite programs to compose perfectly under product has been exploited many times in complexity theory: for example, by Lovasz to determine the Shannon capacity of the pentagon; to show a direct sum theorem for non-deterministic communication complexity and direct product theorems for discrepancy; and in interactive proof systems to show parallel repetition theorems for restricted classes of games. Despite all these examples of product theorems--some going back nearly thirty years--it was only recently that Mittal and Szegedy began to develop a general theory to explain when and why semidefinite programs behave perfectly under product. This theory captured many examples in the literature, but there were also some notable exceptions which it could not explain--namely, an early parallel repetition result of Feige and Lovasz, and a direct product theorem for the discrepancy method of communication complexity by Lee, Shraibman, and Spalek. We extend the theory of Mittal and Szegedy to explain these cases as well. Indeed, to the best of our knowledge, our theory captures all examples of semidefinite product theorems in the literature.
