Abstract:The operations software group at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility faces a number of challenges common to facilities managing a large body of software developed in-house. Developers include members of the software group, operators, hardware engineers and accelerator physicists. One management problem has been ensuring that all software has an identified maintainer who is still working at the lab. In some cases, locating source code for 'orphaned' software has also proven to be difficult. Other challenges include enforcing minimal standards for versioning and documentation, segregating test software from operational software, encouraging better code reuse, consolidating input/output file storage and management, and tracking software dependencies. This paper will describe a relational database model for tracking the information necessary to solve the problems above. The instantiation of that database model provides the foundation for various productivity- and consistency- enhancing tools for automated (or at least assisted) building, versioning, documenting and installation of software.

Abstract:KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts were additionally introduced later in the project, namely the channel access everywhere and the dual-tier controls. Based on the improved control system a concept of virtual accelerators were realized that enables the single injector linac serve as three separate injectors to KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory, respectively. Those control technologies are indispensable for the future particle accelerators.

GAIA: A General AI Assistant for Intelligent Accelerator Operations

Abstract:Large-scale machines like particle accelerators are usually run by a team of experienced operators. In case of a particle accelerator, these operators possess suitable background knowledge on both accelerator physics and the technology comprising the machine. Due to the complexity of the machine, particular subsystems of the machine are taken care of by experts, who the operators can turn to. In this work the reasoning and action (ReAct) prompting paradigm is used to couple an open-weights large language model (LLM) with a high-level machine control system framework and other tools, e.g. the electronic logbook or machine design documentation. By doing so, a multi-expert retrieval augmented generation (RAG) system is implemented, which assists operators in knowledge retrieval tasks, interacts with the machine directly if needed, or writes high level control system scripts. This consolidation of expert knowledge and machine interaction can simplify and speed up machine operation tasks for both new and experienced human operators.

Management of a Large Distributed Control System Development Project

Abstract:Building an accelerator at six geographically dispersed sites is quite mad, but politically expedient. The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), currently under construction in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, combines a pulsed 1 Gev H- superconducting linac with a compressor ring to deliver 2MW of beam power to a liquid mercury target for neutron production [1]. Accelerator components, target and experimental (neutron-scattering) instruments are being developed collaboratively by Lawrence Berkeley (Ion Source and Front End), Los Alamos (Linac), Thomas Jefferson (Cryosystems), Brookhaven (Compressor Ring), Oak Ridge (Target and Conventional Facilities) and Argonne (Neutron Scattering Instruments) National Laboratories. Similarly, a team distributed among all of the participating laboratories is developing the EPICS-based control system. This paper discusses the management model and strategies being used to address the unusual issues of organization, communication, standardization, integration and hand-off inherent in this widely-distributed project.

Abstract:We summarize the community-based consensus for improvements concerning education, public outreach, and inclusion in Accelerator Science and Engineering that will enhance the workforce in the USA. The improvements identified reflect the product of discussions held within the 2021-2022 Snowmass community planning process by topical group AF1: Beam Physics and Accelerator Education within the Accelerator Frontier. Although the Snowmass process centers on high-energy physics, this document outlines required improvements for the entire U.S. accelerator science and engineering enterprise because education of those entering and in the field, outreach to the public, and inclusion are inextricably linked.

Abstract:An extensive service-based software system has been developed for real-time data acquisition (DAQ) on numerous subsystems of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) accelerator. The software, called DAQ, is based upon EPICS 3 Area-Detector with added EPICS 4 services, with EPICS 3 + 4 being called EPICS 7. DAQ is comprised of several network services including file storage and processing as well as numerous EPICS 7 Input-Output Controller (IOC) applications that collect data and publish to EPICS 7 from accelerator subsystems, including power supplies, diagnostics, timing, and RF systems. For the APS upgrade extensions to the DAQ software have been developed for digital Low Level RF (LLRF) systems supporting multiple hardware platforms including Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's LLRF4 hardware and Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture. EPICS 7 IOCs for LLRF run on multiple threads for real-time data collection, visualization , system control, and data file storage that can be triggered on accelerator beam dumps for system debug. A Python-based oscilloscope application has been developed for real-time data visualization.

Abstract:A well-designed control system facilitates the functions of machine operation, maintenance and development. In addition, the overall effectiveness of the control system can be greatly enhanced by providing reliable mechanisms for coordination and communication, ensuring that these functions work in concert. For good operability, the information presented to operators should be consistent, easy to understand and customizable. A maintainable system is segmented appropriately, allowing a broken element to be quickly identified and repaired while leaving the balance of the system available. In a research and development environment, the control system must meet the frequently changing requirements of a variety of customers. This means the system must be flexible enough to allow for ongoing modifications with minimal disruptions to operations. Beyond the hardware and software elements of the control system, appropriate workflow processes must be in place to maximize system uptime and allow people to work efficiently. Processes that provide automatic electronic communication ensure that information is not lost and reaches its destination in a timely fashion. This paper discusses how these control system design and quality issues have been applied at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

Abstract:The Exascale Computing Project (ECP) software deployment effort developed and advanced DevOps capabilities. One goal was to enable robust continuous integration (CI) workflows that span the protected high performance computing (HPC) environments found within many of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratories. This article highlights several challenges encountered with enabling automation, such as charging models for CI jobs, and meeting individualized security requirements that revolve around strongly associating running code with a human identity. It also describes how the Jacamar CI tool evolved to meet latter requirements and became a key aspect of the solutions currently offered. Derived from this experience, we offer a conceptual framework for understanding current and future CI challenges at DOE facilities and offer suggestions for long-term solutions.

Abstract:The Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator (CLAPA-I) is a laser accelerator device comprised of a 200-TW laser system, an optical path transmission system, a target field system, a proton beamline system, an experimental terminal, and a control system, among other components. Its main application is in fundamental research, focusing on areas like the laser plasma acceleration mechanism and ion irradiation applications. This article delves into the upgrade process of the control system for laser accelerators. Initially, building on the foundation of the CLAPA-I system, we developed a distributed control system employing the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) control architecture, enhanced by programmable logic controller (PLC), LabVIEW, and Python. This integration allowed for a unified equipment interface capable of managing complex logic. Furthermore, this article distinguishes between the operational and control aspects of laser accelerators and their traditional counterparts, offering appropriate solutions. A reasonable and effective electromagnetic shielding scheme was proposed to counter the pronounced magnetic interference encountered during laser-target interactions. This advancement not only boosts the CLAPA-I control system's performance but also broadens the applicability of EPICS in the laser accelerator domain, shedding light on the practical deployment of EPICS-based control systems.

Abstract:Many large accelerator facilities have adopted the open-source EPICS software as the quasi-industry standard for control systems. They typically have access to their own electronics laboratory and dedicated personnel for control system development. On the other hand, small laboratories, many based at universities, use commercial software like LabView, or entirely homebrewed systems. These often become cumbersome when the number of controlled devices increases over time. Here we present a control system setup, based on a combination of EPICS, React Automation Studio, and our own drivers for electronics available to smaller laboratories -- such as Arduinos -- that is flexible, modular, and robust. It allows small laboratories, working with off-the-shelf modular electronics, power supplies, and other devices to quickly set up a control system without a large facility overhead, while retaining maximum compatibility and upgradeability. We demonstrate our setup for the MIST-1 ion source experiment at MIT. This control system will later be used to serve the entire IsoDAR accelerator complex and, as such, must be easily expandable.

Abstract:We report on updates to the accelerator controls for the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment II, a pulsed induction-type accelerator for heavy ions. The control infrastructure is built around a LabVIEW interface combined with an Apache Cassandra backend for data archiving. Recent upgrades added the storing and retrieving of device settings into the database, as well as ZeroMQ as a message broker that replaces LabVIEW's shared variables. Converting to ZeroMQ also allows easy access via other programming languages, such as Python.

Abstract:The Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) hosts a new accelerator development program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. IARC provides access to Fermi's state-of-the-art facilities and technologies for research, development and industrialization of particle accelerator technology. In addition to facilitating access to available existing Fermi infrastructure, the IARC Campus has a dedicated 36,000 ft2 heavy assembly building (HAB) with all the infrastructure needed to develop, commission and operate new accelerators. Connected to the HAB is a 47,000 ft2 Office, Technology and Engineering (OTE) building, paid for by the state, that has office, meeting, and light technical space. The OTE building, which contains the Accelerator Physics Center, and nearby Accelerator and Technical divisions provide IARC collaborators with unique access to world class expertise in a wide array of accelerator technologies. At IARC scientists and engineers from Fermilab and academia work side by side with industrial partners to develop breakthroughs in accelerator science and translate them into applications for the nation's health, wealth and security.

Developing Robust Digital Twins and Reinforcement Learning for Accelerator Control Systems at the Fermilab Booster

Abstract:We describe the offline machine learning (ML) development for an effort to precisely regulate the Gradient Magnet Power Supply (GMPS) at the Fermilab Booster accelerator complex via a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). As part of this effort, we created a digital twin of the Booster-GMPS control system by training a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to capture its full dynamics. We outline the path we took to carefully validate our digital twin before deploying it as a reinforcement learning (RL) environment. Additionally, we demonstrate the use of a Deep Q-Network (DQN) policy model with the capability to regulate the GMPS against realistic time-varying perturbations.

Abstract:The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) vacuum instrumentation and control systems are being designed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator facility (TJNAF) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Each participating lab is responsible for a different section of the machine: LBNL for the Front-End section, LANL for the warm LINAC section, TJNAF for the cold LINAC section and BNL for the Ring and transfer line sections. The vacuum instrumentation and control systems are scheduled to be installed and be in operation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2004 or 2005. Although the requirements vary for different sections of the machine, a collaborative effort has been made to standardize vacuum instrumentation components and the global control system interfaces. This paper summarizes the design of each sub-section of vacuum instrumentation and control system and discusses SNS standards for Ion Pump and Gauge controllers, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) interfaces, Ladder Logic programming and the SNS global control system interfaces.

Abstract:Particle accelerators are invaluable tools for research in the basic and applied sciences, in fields such as materials science, chemistry, the biosciences, particle physics, nuclear physics and medicine. The design, commissioning, and operation of accelerator facilities is a non-trivial task, due to the large number of control parameters and the complex interplay of several conflicting design goals. We propose to tackle this problem by means of multi-objective optimization algorithms which also facilitate a parallel deployment. In order to compute solutions in a meaningful time frame a fast and scalable software framework is required. In this paper, we present the implementation of such a general-purpose framework for simulation-based multi-objective optimization methods that allows the automatic investigation of optimal sets of machine parameters. The implementation is based on a master/slave paradigm, employing several masters that govern a set of slaves executing simulations and performing optimization tasks. Using evolutionary algorithms as the optimizer and OPAL as the forward solver, validation experiments and results of multi-objective optimization problems in the domain of beam dynamics are presented. The high charge beam line at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility was used as the beam dynamics model. The 3D beam size, transverse momentum, and energy spread were optimized.

Abstract:A study on future large accelerators [1] has considered a facility, which is designed, built and operated by a worldwide collaboration of equal partner institutions, and which is remote from most of these institutions. The full range of operation was considered including commi-ssioning, machine development, maintenance, trouble shooting and repair. Experience from existing accele-rators confirms that most of these activities are already performed 'remotely'. The large high-energy physics ex-periments and astronomy projects, already involve inter-national collaborations of distant institutions. Based on this experience, the prospects for a machine operated remotely from far sites are encouraging. Experts from each laboratory would remain at their home institution but continue to participate in the operation of the machine after construction. Experts are required to be on site only during initial commissioning and for par-ticularly difficult problems. Repairs require an on-site non-expert maintenance crew. Most of the interventions can be made without an expert and many of the rest resolved with remote assistance. There appears to be no technical obstacle to controlling an accelerator from a distance. The major challenge is to solve the complex management and communication problems.
