Abstract:As indicated by NMR experimental results, there are two types of electrons in a doped cuprate: the localized Cu3d electrons, which are responsible for magnetism, and the itinerant p-band electrons carrying the charge transports. We show that the uncompensated spins at oxygen sites created by holes can pair into a resonating valence bond (RVB) state via local exchange interactions where the quasi-free local Cu spins play a role of the mediation for spin pairing. The two-component model gives a proper interpretation of the magnetic origin of high Tc superconductivity, especially, in explanation of the cross over from the anti-ferromagnetic to the RVB state.

Abstract:From nearly half-filled Hubbard model, under second order degenerate perturbation, we obtained an approximate effective Hamiltonian defined in non-doubly occupied space, Which is the same as that proposed by P.W. Anderson et al(1, 2). A little different considerations from that in Ref.2 have been made, which causes the relation between chemical potential u and doping parameter δ is different. Tc/t was calculated at different t/U. The results we obtained are also different from that in Ref.2 at some extent, especially for δ→0. It is found that Tc is in the region of experiment results under reasonable parameter t and U.

Abstract:Tunnelling effects in a junction between two RVB superconductor samples are depicted in detail. A spin related Josephson effect is predicted; the Josephson current in zero-resistance case appears in the c-direction perpendicular to the CuO layers; and the temperature dependent electric current in the c-direction for a single crystal sample is also given.

Abstract:The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and with the detection of a unidirectional modulation of the charge density as seen by high-field NMR measurements. The low coherence temperature is quantitatively consistent with the small hopping integral t_perp inferred from the splitting of the quantum oscillation frequencies. We conclude that the Fermi-surface reconstruction in YBCO at dopings from p = 0.08 to at least p = 0.15, attributed to stripe order, produces a metallic state with 3D coherence deep in the underdoped regime.

Abstract:The copper oxides present the highest superconducting temperature and properties at odds with other compounds, suggestive of a fundamentally different superconductivity.In particular, the Abrikosov vortices fail to exhibit localized states expected and observed in all clean superconductors.We have explored the possibility that the elusive vortex-core signatures are actually present but weak.Combining local tunneling measurements with large-scale theoretical modeling, we positively identify the vortex states in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ .We explain their spectrum and the observed variations thereof from one vortex to the next by considering the effects of nearby vortices and disorder in the vortex lattice.We argue that the superconductivity of copper oxides is conventional, but the spectroscopic signature does not look so because the superconducting carriers are a minority.
Origin of Superconductivity in Rhombohedral Trilayer Graphene: Quasiparticle Pairing within the Inter-Valley Coherent Phase

Abstract:Superconductivity (SC) is observed in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) with an extremely low charge carrier densities, between the normal metal state and a probable inter-valley coherent (IVC) state. The measured coherence length in RTG is roughly two orders of magnitude shorter than the value predicted by a conventional BCS theory. To resolve these discrepancies, we propose that the RTG SC phase arises from the pairing of quasiparticles within the IVC phase. We illustrate the SC behavior using gapped Dirac cones with the chemical potential close to the conduction band's bottom and establish the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our findings indicate that the mean-field transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{MF}$, is primarily determined by the density of states of quasiparticles within the IVC phase, and is more suppressed in comparison with the BCS relation. Interestingly, we discover that the coherence length behaves according to $\xi\sim 1/\sqrt{T_\mathrm{MF}}$. When the chemical potential lies within the band gap, the conventional coherence length becomes small, while the quantum metric contribution can diverge. Applying our approach to a microscopic model for RTG, our predictions align well with experimental data and effectively capture key measurable features of quantities such as the mean-field transition temperature $T_\mathrm{MF}$ and the coherence length $\xi$. Furthermore, we reveal that the quantum metric contribution, stemming from the multi-band properties of the IVC quasiparticles, plays a significant role in determining the coherence length around the transition regime from superconductivity to IVC. Lastly, experimental predictions are discussed on bebaviors of the upper critical field and coherence length at low temperatures.

Abstract:The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theoretical picture has successfully explained the phenomenon of superconductivity in many single element and alloy superconductors.It suggests that the superconductivity is established through quantum condensation of vast number of Copper pairs formed by exchanging phonons between two electrons with opposite momentum and spins near the Fermi energy.This interesting paradigm has dominated the field of superconductivity since 1957.Many superconductors discovered in past three decades, such as the cuprates, iron pnictide/charcogenide and heavy Fermion superconductors seem, however, to violate the BCS picture to some extent.Most of these new superconducting systems seem to get rid of the phonons, instead use the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as the pairing gluons.In cuprate superconductors, the origin for the pairing may be even more exotic.In this short report, we will summarize part of these progresses and try to guide readers to possibly new schemes of superconductivity after the BCS paradigm.
Incommensurate inter-valley coherent states in ABC graphene: collective modes and superconductivity

Abstract:Recent experiments in ABC trilayer graphene detected superconductivity on the border of a phase transition to a symmetry-broken phase. In this work, we use unrestricted Hartree-Fock to study the nature of this phase. We find a close competition between two incommensurate inter-valley coherent (IVC) phases: an IVC crystal where the ordering occurs at multiple wavevectors, and an IVC spiral with a single ordering wavevector. Focusing on one of the regimes where superconductivity is observed experimentally, we find a continuous (or very weakly first order) transition between a half metallic phase to an IVC crystal, followed by a first-order transition into an IVC spiral. Using time-dependent Hartree-Fock, we study the collective mode spectrum in the half-metalic phase. We find a soft inter-valley mode that can mediate superconductivity in a narrow sliver of density near the continuous transition, with a Tc that can reach a few hundreds of mK and a sign-changing s-wave order parameter. The spin stiffness in the half metal phase is found to be surprisingly low, of the order of a few degrees Kelvin.

Nonlinear transport by vortex tangles in cuprate high-temperature superconductors

Abstract:A unified model of vortex tangles is proposed to describe unconventional transport in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, which not only captures the fast vortices scenario at low density, but also predicts a novel mechanism of core-core collisions in dense vortex fluid regime. The theory clarifies the nature of vortex fluctuations being the quantum fluctuations of holes and then resolves a discrepancy of two orders of magnitude of Anderson's damping model $\hbar n_v$, with right prediction of the nonlinear field dependence of the resistivity $\rho=\rho_n(B+B_T)/(B_0+B+B_T)$ and the Nernst effect, validated by data of several samples. Consequently, Anderson's vortex tangles concept and phase fluctuation scenario of pseudogap are verified quantitatively.

Abstract:Recently discovered superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs)1,2 provide a fresh opportunity to study correlation-driven electronic phenomena on a kagome lattice. The observation of an unusual charge density wave (CDW) in the normal state of all the members of the AV3Sb5 family2–10 has prompted a large effort to identify any ‘hidden’ broken symmetries associated with it. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy to reveal pronounced intensity anisotropy between the different directions of hexagonal CDW in KV3Sb5. In particular, we find that one of the CDW directions is distinctly different compared with the other two. This observation points to an intrinsic rotation-symmetry-broken electronic ground state where the symmetry is reduced from sixfold to twofold. Furthermore, in contrast to previous reports3, we find that the CDW phase is insensitive to the magnetic-field direction, regardless of the presence or absence of atomic defects. Our experiments, combined with earlier observations of stripe charge ordering in CsV3Sb5, establish correlation-driven rotation symmetry breaking as a unifying feature of AV3Sb5 kagome superconductors.

Abstract:Electron irradiation has been used to introduce point defects in a controlled way in the CuO2 planes of underdoped and optimally doped YBCO. This technique allows us to perform very accurate measurements of Tc and of the residual resistivity in a wide range of defect contents xd down to Tc=0. The Tc decrease does not follow the variation expected from pair breaking theories. The evolutions of Tc and of the transition width with xd emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations, at least for the highly damaged regime. These results open new questions about the evolution of the defect induced Tc depression over the phase diagram of the cuprates

Abstract:On the assumption that doping creates holes on the O rather than the Cu sites, a new model to describe the CuO2 planes in the high Tc superconductor is proposed. It is shown that the RVB state of the holes on Cu sites at half-filling will lead to an effective attraction of the holes on the O sites which is responsible for superconductivity. Specific heat and susceptibility are discussed briefly and are consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:Abstract A variety of precise experiments have been carried out to establish the character of the superconducting state in Sr 2 RuO 4 . Many of these appear to imply contradictory conclusions concerning the symmetries of this state. Here we propose that these results can be reconciled if we assume that there is a near-degeneracy between a $${d}_{{x}^{2}-{y}^{2}}$$ d x 2 − y 2 (B 1 g in group theory nomenclature) and a $${g}_{xy({x}^{2}-{y}^{2})}$$ g x y ( x 2 − y 2 ) (A 2 g ) superconducting state. From a weak-coupling perspective, such an accidental degeneracy can occur at a point at which a balance between the on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions triggers a d -wave to g -wave transition.

Abstract:It has recently been proposed that the Fermi surface of underdoped high Tc copper oxide materials within the charge-ordered regime consists of a diamond-shaped electron pocket constructed from arcs connected at vertices. We show here that on modeling the in-plane magnetotransport of such a Fermi surface using the Shockley-Chambers tube integral approach and a uniform scattering time, several key features of the normal state in-plane transport of the underdoped copper oxide systems can be understood. These include the sign reversal in the Hall coefficient, the positive magnetoresistance and magnetic quantum oscillations in the Hall coefficient.

Abstract:In the recent search for unconventional- and topological superconductivity, noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSCs) rank among the most promising candidate materials. Surprisingly, some of them -- especially those containing rhenium -- seem to exhibit also time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in their superconducting state, while TRS is preserved in many other isostructural NCSCs. To date, a satisfactory explanation for such discrepant behavior, albeit crucial for understanding the unconventional superconductivity of these materials, is still missing. Here we review the most recent developments regarding the Re-based class, where the muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) technique plays a key role due to its high sensitivity to the weak internal fields associated with the TRS breaking phenomenon. We discuss different cases of Re-containing superconductors, comprising both centrosymmetric- and noncentrosymmetric crystal structures and ranging from pure rhenium, to Re$T$ ($T$ = 3$d$-5$d$ early transition metals), to the dilute-Re case of ReBe$_{22}$. $\mu$SR results suggest that the rhenium presence and its amount are two key factors for the appearance and the extent of TRS breaking in Re-based superconductors. Besides summarizing the existing findings, we also put forward future research ideas regarding the exciting field of materials showing TRS breaking.

Anomalous Normal State Transport in Underdoped Cuprates: A Preformed-Pair Alternative to the Vortex Scenario

Abstract:We address those puzzling experiments in underdoped high $T_c$ superconductors which have been associated with normal state "vortices" and show these data can be understood as deriving from preformed pairs with onset temperature $T^* > T_c$. For uncorrelated bosons in small magnetic fields, and arbitrary $T^*/T_c$, we present the exact contribution to \textit{all} transport coefficients. In the overdoped regime our results reduce to those of fluctuation theories ($T^*\approx T_c$). Semi-quantitative agreement with Nernst, ac conductivity and diamagnetic measurements is quite reasonable.
Test for BCS-BEC Crossover in the Cuprate Superconductors

Abstract:In this paper we address the question of whether high-temperature superconductors have anything in common with BCS-BEC crossover theory. Towards this goal, we present a proposal and related predictions which provide a concrete test for the applicability of this theoretical framework. These predictions characterize the behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length, $\xi_0^{\text{coh}}$, near the transition temperature $T_{\text{c}}$, and across the entire superconducting $T_{\text{c}}$ dome in the phase diagram. That we are lacking a systematic characterization of $\xi_0^{\text{coh}}$ in the entire class of cuprate superconductors is perhaps surprising, as it is one of the most fundamental properties of any superconductor. This paper is written to motivate further experiments and, thus, address this shortcoming. Here we show how measurements of $\xi_0^{\text{coh}}$ contain direct indications for whether or not the cuprates are associated with BCS-BEC crossover and, if so, where within the crossover spectrum a particular superconductor lies.

Abstract:In conventional and high transition temperature copper oxide and iron pnictide superconductors, the Cooper pairs all have even parity. As a rare exception, Sr_2RuO_4 is the first prime candidate for topological chiral p-wave superconductivity, which has time-reversal breaking odd-parity Cooper pairs known to exist before only in the neutral superfluid ^3He. However, there are several key unresolved issues hampering the microscopic description of the unconventional superconductivity. Spin fluctuations at both large and small wavevectors are present in experiments, but how they arise and drive superconductivity is not yet clear. Spontaneous edge current is expected but not observed conclusively. Specific experiments point to highly band- and/or momentum-dependent energy gaps for quasiparticle excitations in the superconducting state. Here, by comprehensive functional renormalization group calculations with all relevant bands, we disentangle the various competing possibilities. In particular we show the small wavevector spin fluctuations, driven by a single two-dimensional band, trigger p-wave superconductivity with quasi-nodal energy gaps.
Spin excitation in d-wave superconductors: a Fermi liquid picture

Abstract:A detailed study of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of the high-Tc cuprates based on the Fermi liquid (FL) picture is given. We focus on the issue of the transformation between the commensurate and incommensurate (IC) excitation driven by frequency or temperature. For La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO), the condition of small Δ(0)/vF can simultaneously reproduce the always existing IC peaks in the superconducting (SC) and normal states, and the always fixed location at temperature or frequency change. For YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO), a moderate Δ(0)/vF and proximity of the van Hove singularity (vHS) at M=(0,π) to the Fermi level can reproduce the frequency- and temperature-driven shifting IC peaks in the SC state, and the vanishing of the IC peak in the normal state. We address the conditional peak shifting behavior to a refined consideration on the nesting effect which is previously overlook. As a result, both the well documented data on LSCO and the recent data on YBCO (on YBa2Cu3O6.7 by [Phys. Rev. Lett 83 (1999) 608] and YBa2Cu3O6.85 by [Science 288 (2000) 1234]) can be reasonably reconciled within a FL picture. We also point out that the one-dimensional-like data by [Condmat/9811100; Nature 404 (2000) 729] on a detwinned and more underdoped sample YBa2Cu3O6.6 could be due to a gap anisotropy effect originally discussed by [Phys. Rev. B 53 (1996) 5889], and we proceed to suggest a way of clarifying it.
