Abstract:As adaptive optics technology continues to improve, the stellar coronagraph will play an ever increasing role in ground-based high-contrast imaging observations. Though several different image masks exist for the most common type of coronagraph, the Lyot coronagraph, it is not yet clear what level of wavefront correction must be reached in order to gain, either in starlight suppression or observing efficiency, by implementing a more sophisticated design. In this paper, we model image plane Lyot-style coronagraphs and test their response to a range of wavefront correction levels, in order to identify regimes of atmospheric compensation where the use of hard-edge, Gaussian, and band-limited image masks becomes observationally advantageous. To delineate performances, we calculate the speckle noise floor mean intensity. We find that apodized masks provide little improvement over hard-edge masks until on-sky Strehl ratios exceed $\sim0.88 \: S_{qs}$, where $S_{qs}$ is the intrinsic Strehl ratio provided by the optical system. Above this value, 4th-order band-limited masks out-perform Gaussian masks by generating comparable contrast with higher Lyot stop throughput. Below this level of correction, hard-edge masks may be preferentially chosen, since they are less susceptible to low-order aberration content. The use of higher-order band-limited masks is relegated to situations where quasi-static residual starlight cannot be sufficiently removed from the search area with speckle-nulling hardware.

Comparison of coronagraphs for high contrast imaging in the context of Extremely Large Telescopes

Abstract:We compare coronagraph concepts and investigate their behavior and suitability for planet finder projects with Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs, 30-42 meters class telescopes). For this task, we analyze the impact of major error sources that occur in a coronagraphic telescope (central obscuration, secondary support, low-order segment aberrations, segment reflectivity variations, pointing errors) for phase, amplitude and interferometric type coronagraphs. This analysis is performed at two different levels of the detection process: under residual phase left uncorrected by an eXtreme Adaptive Optics system (XAO) for a large range of Strehl ratio and after a general and simple model of speckle calibration, assuming common phase aberrations between the XAO and the coronagraph (static phase aberrations of the instrument) and non-common phase aberrations downstream of the coronagraph (differential aberrations provided by the calibration unit). We derive critical parameters that each concept will have to cope with by order of importance. We evidence three coronagraph categories as function of the accessible angular separation and proposed optimal one in each case. Most of the time amplitude concepts appear more favorable and specifically, the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph gathers the adequate characteristics to be a baseline design for ELTs.

On-sky closed loop correction of atmospheric dispersion for high-contrast coronagraphy and astrometry

Abstract:Adaptive optic (AO) systems delivering high levels of wavefront correction are now common at observatories. One of the main limitations to image quality after wavefront correction comes from atmospheric refraction. An Atmospheric dispersion compensator (ADC) is employed to correct for atmospheric refraction. The correction is applied based on a look-up table consisting of dispersion values as a function of telescope elevation angle. The look-up table based correction of atmospheric dispersion results in imperfect compensation leading to the presence of residual dispersion in the point-spread function (PSF) and is insufficient when sub-milliarcsecond precision is required. The presence of residual dispersion can limit the achievable contrast while employing high-performance coronagraphs or can compromise high-precision astrometric measurements. In this paper, we present the first on-sky closed-loop correction of atmospheric dispersion by directly using science path images. The concept behind the measurement of dispersion utilizes the chromatic scaling of focal plane speckles. An adaptive speckle grid generated with a deformable mirror (DM) that has a sufficiently large number of actuators is used to accurately measure the residual dispersion and subsequently correct it by driving the ADC. We have demonstrated with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme AO (SCExAO) system on-sky closed-loop correction of residual dispersion to < 1 mas across H-band. This work will aid in the direct detection of habitable exoplanets with upcoming extremely large telescopes (ELTs) and also provide a diagnostic tool to test the performance of instruments which require sub-milliarcsecond correction.

The future looks dark: improving high contrast imaging with hyper-parameter optimization for data-driven predictive wavefront control

Abstract:The direct imaging and characterization of exoplanets requires extreme adaptive optics (XAO), achieving exquisite wavefront correction (upwards of 90$\%$ Strehl) over a narrow field of view (a few arcseconds). For these XAO systems the temporal error is often a leading term in the error budget, wherein the wavefront evolves faster than the lag between wavefront sensing and control. For atmospheres with high-velocity wind layers, this can result in a wind-driven halo in the coronagraphic dark-zone, limiting sensitivity to faint, close-in companions. The AO system's lag-time is often limited by the wavefront sensor exposure time, especially in the case of fainter guidestars. Predictive control mitigates the temporal error by predicting the shape of the wavefront by time the system correction is applied. One such method of prediction is empirical orthogonal functions (EOF), wherein previous states in the wavefront sensor history are used to learn linear correlations with a minimization problem. This method has been demonstrated on-sky at Subaru/SCExAO and Keck/NIRC2, but has yet to be optimized. With this work as a starting point, we explore the optimal filter hyper-parameter space for implementing EOF on-sky, study its stability under varying atmospheric parameters, and discuss future paths for facilitization of predictive control. This work not only offers a pathway to optimize Keck and Subaru observing, but also acts as a pathfinder for predictive control methods with extremely large telescopes.

A Reflective Gaussian Coronagraph for ExAO: Laboratory Performance

Abstract:We report laboratory results of a coronagraphic test bench to assess the intensity reduction differences between a "Gaussian" tapered focal plane coronagraphic mask and a classical hard-edged "Top Hat" function mask at Extreme Adaptive Optics (ExAO) Strehl ratios of ~94%. However, unlike a traditional coronagraph design, we insert a reflective focal plane mask at 45 degree to the optical axis. We also used an intermediate secondary mask ("Mask_2") before a final image in order to block additional mask-edge diffracted light. The test bench simulates the 8.1m Gemini North telescope. It includes one spider vane, different mask radii (r= 1.9, 3.7, 7.4 lambda/D) and two types of reflective focal plane masks (hard-edged "Top Hat" and "Gaussian" tapered profiles). In order to investigate the relative performance of these competing coronagraphic designs with regard to extra-solar planet detection sensitivity, we utilize the simulation of realistic extra-solar planet populations (Nielson et al. 2006). With an appropriate translation of our laboratory results to expected telescope performance, a "Gaussian" tapered mask radius of 3.7 lambda/D with an additional mask ("Mask_2") performs best (highest planet detection sensitivity). For a full survey with this optimal design, the simulation predicts ~30% more planets detected compared to a similar sized "Top Hat" function mask with "Mask_2." Using the best design, the point contrast ratio between the stellar PSF peak and the coronagraphic PSF at 10 lambda/D (0.4" in H band if D = 8.1m) is ~10 times higher than a classical Lyot "Top Hat" coronagraph. Hence, we find a Gaussian apodized mask with an additional blocking mask is a superior (~10x higher contrast) than use of a classical Lyot coronagraph for ExAO-like Strehls.

Abstract:We build on a long-standing tradition in astronomical adaptive optics (AO) of specifying performance metrics and error budgets using linear systems modeling in the spatial-frequency domain. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive tool for the calculation of error budgets in terms of residual temporally filtered phase power spectral densities and variances. In addition, the fast simulation of AO-corrected point spread functions (PSFs) provided by this method can be used as inputs for simulations of science observations with next-generation instruments and telescopes, in particular to predict post-coronagraphic contrast improvements for planet finder systems. We extend the previous results presented in Correia and Teixeira [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A31, 2763 (2014)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.31.002763] to the closed-loop case with predictive controllers and generalize the analytical modeling of Rigaut et al. [Proc. SPIE3353, 1038 (1998)PSISDG0277-786X10.1117/12.321649], Flicker [Technical Report (W. M. Keck Observatory, 2007)], and Jolissaint [J. Eur. Opt. Soc.5, 10055 (2010)1990-257310.2971/jeos.2010.10055]. We follow closely the developments of Ellerbroek [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A22, 310 (2005)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.22.000310] and propose the synthesis of a distributed Kalman filter to mitigate both aniso-servo-lag and aliasing errors while minimizing the overall residual variance. We discuss applications to (i) analytic AO-corrected PSF modeling in the spatial-frequency domain, (ii) post-coronagraphic contrast enhancement, (iii) filter optimization for real-time wavefront reconstruction, and (iv) PSF reconstruction from system telemetry. Under perfect knowledge of wind velocities, we show that ∼60 nm rms error reduction can be achieved with the distributed Kalman filter embodying antialiasing reconstructors on 10 m class high-order AO systems, leading to contrast improvement factors of up to three orders of magnitude at few λ/D separations (∼1-5λ/D) for a 0 magnitude star and reaching close to one order of magnitude for a 12 magnitude star.

Abstract:Coronagraph instruments on future space telescopes will enable the direct detection and characterization of Earth-like exoplanets around Sun-like stars for the first time. The quest for the optimal optical coronagraph designs has made rapid progress in recent years thanks to the Segmented Coronagraph Design and Analysis (SCDA) initiative led by the Exoplanet Exploration Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a result, several types of high-performance designs have emerged that make use of dual deformable mirrors to (1) correct for optical aberrations and (2) suppress diffracted starlight from obstructions and discontinuities in the telescope pupil. However, the algorithms used to compute the optimal deformable mirror surface tend to be computationally intensive, prohibiting large scale design surveys. Here, we utilize the Fast Linearized Coronagraph Optimizer (FALCO), a tool that allows for rapid optimization of deformable mirror shapes, to explore trade-offs in coronagraph designs for obstructed and segmented space telescopes. We compare designs for representative shaped pupil Lyot and vortex coronagraphs, two of the most promising concepts for the LUVOIR space mission concept. We analyze the optical performance of each design, including their throughput and ability to passively suppress light from partially resolved stars in the presence of low-order aberrations. Our main result is that deformable mirror based apodization can sufficiently suppress diffraction from support struts and inter-segment gaps whose widths are on the order of $\sim$0.1% of the primary mirror diameter to detect Earth-sized planets within a few tens of milliarcseconds from the star.

Abstract:Extreme wavefront correction is required for coronagraphs on future space telescopes to reach 1e-8 or better starlight suppression for the direct imaging and characterization of exoplanets in reflected light. Thus, a suite of wavefront sensors working in tandem with active and adaptive optics are used to achieve stable, nanometer-level wavefront control over long observations. In order to verify wavefront control systems comprehensive and accurate integrated models are needed. These should account for any sources of on-orbit error that may degrade performance past the limit imposed by photon noise. An integrated model of wavefront sensing and control for a space-based coronagraph was created using geometrical raytracing and physical optics propagation methods. Our model concept consists of an active telescope front end in addition to a charge-6 vector vortex coronagraph instrument. The telescope uses phase retrieval to guide primary mirror bending modes and secondary mirror position to control the wavefront error within tens of nanometers. The telescope model is dependent on raytracing to simulate these active optics corrections for compensating the wavefront errors caused by misalignments and thermal gradients in optical components. Entering the coronagraph, a self-coherent camera is used for focal plane wavefront sensing and digging the dark hole. We utilize physical optics propagation to model the coronagraph's sensitivity to mid and high-order wavefront errors caused by optical surface errors and pointing jitter. We use our integrated models to quantify expected starlight suppression versus wavefront sensor signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Adaptive optics is a technique mostly used on large telescopes. It turns out to be challenging for smaller telescopes (0.5~2m) due to the small isoplanatic angle, small subapertures and high correction speeds needed at visible wavelengths, requiring bright stars for guiding, severely limiting the sky coverage. NGS SCAO is ideal for planetary objects but remains limited for general purpose observing. The approach we consider is a compromise between image quality gain and sky coverage: we propose to partially improve the image quality anywhere in the sky instead of providing the diffraction limit around a few thousand bright stars. We suggest a new solution based on multiple AO concepts brought together: The principle is based on a rotating Foucault test, like the first AO concept proposed by H. Babcock in 1953, on the Ground Layer Adaptive Optics, proposed by Rigaut and Tokovinin in the early 2000s, and on the idea of Layer-oriented MCAO and the pupil-plane wavefront analysis by R. Ragazzoni. We propose to combine these techniques to use all the light available in a large field to measure the ground layer turbulence and enable the high angular resolution imaging of regions of the sky (e.g., nebulas, galaxies) inaccessible to traditional AO systems. The motivation to develop compact and robust AO system for small telescopes is two-fold: On the one hand, universities often have access to small telescopes as part of their education programs. Also, researchers in countries with fewer resources could also benefit from reliable adaptive optics system on smaller telescopes for research and education purposes. On the other hand, amateur astronomers and enthusiasts want improved image quality for visual observation and astrophotography. Implementing readily accessible adaptive optics in astronomy clubs would also likely have a significant impact on citizen science.

Abstract:Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique that corrects for optical aberrations. It was originally proposed to correct for the blurring effect of atmospheric turbulence on images in ground-based telescopes and was instrumental in the work that resulted in the Nobel prize-winning discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy. When AO is used to correct for the eye’s imperfect optics, retinal changes at the cellular level can be detected, allowing us to study the operation of the visual system and to assess ocular health in the microscopic domain. By correcting for sample-induced blur in microscopy, AO has pushed the boundaries of imaging in thick tissue specimens, such as when observing neuronal processes in the brain. In this primer, we focus on the application of AO for high-resolution imaging in astronomy, vision science and microscopy. We begin with an overview of the general principles of AO and its main components, which include methods to measure the aberrations, devices for aberration correction, and how these components are linked in operation. We present results and applications from each field along with reproducibility considerations and limitations. Finally, we discuss future directions.
Low Order Aberrations in Band-Limited Lyot Coronagraphs

Abstract:We study the way Lyot coronagraphs with unapodized entrance pupils respond to small, low order phase aberrations. This study is applicable to ground-based adaptive optics coronagraphs operating at 90% and higher Strehl ratios, as well as to some space-based coronagraphs with intrinsically higher Strehl ratio imaging. We utilize a second order expansion of the monochromatic point-spread function (written as a power spectrum of a power series in the phase aberration over clear aperture) to derive analytical expressions for the response of a `band-limited' Lyot coronagraph (BLC) to small, low order, phase aberrations. The BLC possesses a focal plane mask with an occulting spot whose opacity profile is a spatially band-limited function rather than a hard-edged, opaque disk. The BLC is, to first order, insensitive to tilt and astigmatism. Undersizing the stop in the re-imaged pupil plane (the Lyot plane) following the focal plane mask can alleviate second order effects of astigmatism, at the expense of system throughput and angular resolution. The optimal degree of such undersizing depends on individual instrument designs and goals. Our analytical work engenders physical insight, and complements existing numerical work on this subject. Our methods can be extended to treat the passage of higher order aberrations through band-limited Lyot coronagraphs, by using our polynomial decomposition or an analogous Fourier approach.

Laboratory and On-Sky Validation of the Shaped Pupil Coronagraph's Sensitivity to Low-Order Aberrations With Active Wavefront Control

Abstract:We present early laboratory simulations and extensive on-sky tests validating of the performance of a shaped pupil coronagraph (SPC) behind an extreme-AO corrected beam of the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system. In tests with the SCExAO internal source/wavefront error simulator, the normalized intensity profile for the SPC degrades more slowly than for the Lyot coronagraph as low-order aberrations reduce the Strehl ratio from extremely high values (S.R. $\sim$ 0.93--0.99) to those characteristic of current ground-based extreme AO systems (S.R. $\sim$ 0.74--0.93) and then slightly lower values down to S.R. $\sim$ 0.57. On-sky SCExAO data taken with the SPC and other coronagraphs for brown dwarf/planet-hosting stars HD 1160 and HR 8799 provide further evidence for the SPC's robustness to low-order aberrations. From H-band Strehl ratios of 80% to 70%, the Lyot coronagraph's performance vs. that of the SPC may degrade even faster on sky than is seen in our internal source simulations. The 5-$\sigma$ contrast also degrades faster (by a factor of two) for the Lyot than the SPC. The SPC we use was designed as a technology demonstrator only, with a contrast floor, throughput, and outer working angle poorly matched for SCExAO's current AO performance and poorly tuned for imaging the HR 8799 planets. Nevertheless, we detect HR 8799 cde with SCExAO/CHARIS using the SPC in broadband mode, where the S/N for planet e is within 30% of that obtained using the vortex coronagraph. The shaped-pupil coronagraph is a promising design demonstrated to be robust in the presence of low-order aberrations and may be well-suited for future ground and space-based direct imaging observations, especially those focused on follow-up exoplanet characterization and technology demonstration of deep contrast within well-defined regions of the image plane.

Abstract:Exoplanet detection and characterization through extreme adaptive optics (ExAO) is a key science goal of future extremely large telescopes. This achievement, however, will be limited in sensitivity by both quasi-static wavefront errors and residual AO-corrected atmospheric wavefront errors. A solution to both of these problems is to use the science camera of an ExAO system as a wavefront sensor to perform a fast measurement and correction method to remove these aberrations as soon as they are detected. We have developed the framework for one such method, using the self-coherent camera (SCC), to be applied to ground-based telescopes, called Fast Atmospheric SCC Technique (FAST; Gerard et al., submitted). Our FAST solution requires an optimally designed coronagraph (the SCC FPM) and post-processing algorithm and is in principle able to reach a "raw" contrast of a few times the photon noise limit, continually improving with integration time. In this paper, we present new ongoing work in exploring the manufacturing limitations of the SCC FPM as well as a general framework to implement and optimize a FAST deformable mirror control loop.

Abstract:For diffraction-limited optical systems an accurate physical optics model is necessary to properly evaluate instrument performance. Astronomical observatories outfitted with coronagraphs for direct exoplanet imaging require physical optics models to simulate the effects of misalignment and diffraction. Accurate knowledge of the observatory's PSF is integral for the design of high-contrast imaging instruments and simulation of astrophysical observations. The state of the art is to model the misalignment, ray aberration, and diffraction across multiple software packages, which complicates the design process. Gaussian Beamlet Decomposition (GBD) is a ray-based method of diffraction calculation that has been widely implemented in commercial optical design software. By performing the coherent calculation with data from the ray model of the observatory, the ray aberration errors can be fed directly into the physical optics model of the coronagraph, enabling a more integrated model of the observatory. We develop a formal algorithm for the transfer-matrix method of GBD, and evaluate it against analytical results and a traditional physical optics model to assess the suitability of GBD for high-contrast imaging simulations. Our GBD simulations of the observatory PSF, when compared to the analytical Airy function, have a sum-normalized RMS difference of ~10^-6. These fields are then propagated through a Fraunhofer model of a exoplanet imaging coronagraph where the mean residual numerical contrast is 4x10^-11, with a maximum near the inner working angle at 5x10^-9. These results show considerable promise for the future development of GBD as a viable propagation technique in high-contrast imaging. We developed this algorithm in an open-source software package and outlined a path for its continued development to increase the fidelity and flexibility of diffraction simulations using GBD.

We extend the previous results and propose the synthesis of a distributed Kalman filter to mitigate both aniso-servo-lag and aliasing errors whilst minimizing the overall residual variance. We discuss applications to (i) analytic AO-corrected PSF modeling in the spatial-frequency domain, (ii) post-coronagraphic contrast enhancement, (iii) filter optimization for real-time wavefront reconstruction, and (iv) PSF reconstruction from system telemetry. Under perfect knowledge of wind velocities, we show that $\sim$60 nm rms error reduction can be achieved with the distributed Kalman filter embodying anti- aliasing reconstructors on 10 m class high-order AO systems, leading to contrast improvement factors of up to three orders of magnitude at few ${\lambda}/D$ separations ($\sim1-5{\lambda}/D$) for a 0 magnitude star and reaching close to one order of magnitude for a 12 magnitude star.

Abstract:The next generation of extreme adaptive optics (AO) must be calibrated exceptionally well to achieve the desired contrast for ground-based direct imaging exoplanet targets. Current wavefront sensing and control system responses deviate from lab calibration throughout the night due to non linearities in the wavefront sensor (WFS) and signal loss. One cause of these changes is the optical gain (OG) effect, which shows that the difference between actual and reconstructed wavefronts is sensitive to residual wavefront errors from partially corrected turbulence. This work details on-sky measurement of optical gain on MagAO-X, an extreme AO system on the Magellan Clay 6.5m. We ultimately plan on using a method of high-temporal frequency probes on our deformable mirror to track optical gain on the Pyramid WFS. The high-temporal frequency probes, used to create PSF copies at 10-22 lambda /D, are already routinely used by our system for coronagraph centering and post-observation calibration. This method is supported by the OG measurements from the modal response, measured simultaneously by sequenced pokes of each mode. When tracked with DIMM measurements, optical gain calibrations show a clear dependence on Strehl Ratio, and this relationship is discussed. This more accurate method of calibration is a crucial next step in enabling higher fidelity correction and post processing techniques for direct imaging ground based systems.

Coronagraphic phase diversity: performance study and laboratory demonstration

Abstract:The final performance of current and future instruments dedicated to exoplanet detection and characterization (such as SPHERE on the European Very Large Telescope, GPI on Gemini North, or future instruments on Extremely Large Telescopes) is limited by uncorrected quasi-static aberrations. These aberrations create long-lived speckles in the scientific image plane, which can easily be mistaken for planets. Common adaptive optics systems require dedicated components to perform wave-front analysis. The ultimate wave-front measurement performance is thus limited by the unavoidable differential aberrations between the wavefront sensor and the scientific camera. To reach the level of detectivity required by high-contrast imaging, these differential aberrations must be estimated and compensated for. In this paper, we characterize and experimentally validate a wave-front sensing method that relies on focal-plane data. Our method, called COFFEE (for COronagraphic Focal-plane wave-Front Estimation for Exoplanet detection), is based on a Bayesian approach, and it consists in an extension of phase diversity to high-contrast imaging. It estimates the differential aberrations using only two focal-plane coronagraphic images recorded from the scientific camera itself. In this paper, we first present a thorough characterization of COFFEE's performance by means of numerical simulations. This characterization is then compared with an experimental validation of COFFEE using an in-house adaptive optics bench and an apodized Roddier & Roddier phase mask coronagraph. An excellent match between experimental results and the theoretical study is found. Lastly, we present a preliminary validation of COFFEE's ability to compensate for the aberrations upstream of a coronagraph.

Focal Plane Wavefront Sensing with the FAST TGV Coronagraph

Abstract:The continual push to directly image exoplanets at lower masses and closer separations orbiting around bright stars remains limited by both quasi-static and residual adaptive optics aberration. In previous papers we have proposed a modification of the self-coherent camera (SCC) design to address both of these limitations, called the Fast Atmospheric SCC Technique (FAST). In this paper we introduce an additional modification to the FAST focal plane mask design, including the existing Tip/tilt and Gaussian components and adding a charge four Vortex (TGV) component. In addition to boosting SCC fringe signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) as in our previous design, we show that the FAST TGV mask is also optimized to reach high contrast at separations closer to the star. In this paper we use numerical simulations to consider the performance improvement on correcting quasi-static aberration using this new mask compared to the previously proposed Tip/tilt+Gaussian mask. Using active deformable mirror control to generate a calibrated half dark hole improves contrast by a factor of about 200 at 2–5 λ/D and up to a factor of 10 at 5–20 λ/D. The new methodology presented in this paper, now simultaneously considering both contrast and fringe S/N, opens the door to a new ideology of coronagraph design, where the coronagraph is now considered in duality as both a diffraction attenuator and a wavefront sensor.

Abstract:On certain extent the behavior of the Adaptive Optics correction for Extremely Large Telescope scales with diameter size. But in Ground Layer Adaptive Optics the combined effect of a Large Field of View and the large overlap of Guide Stars pupil footprints at high atmospheric altitude introduces severe changes in the behavior of the correction returning a very different distribution of the energy going from known 8-10meter to 100m diameters. In this paper we identify the reasons and the ways of these different behaviors.

Abstract:Future large space telescopes will be equipped with adaptive optics (AO) to overcome wavefront aberrations and achieve high contrast for imaging faint astronomical objects, such as earth-like exoplanets and debris disks. In contrast to AO that is widely used in ground telescopes, space-based AO systems will use focal plane wavefront sensing to measure the wavefront aberrations. Focal plane wavefront sensing is a class of techniques that reconstruct the light field based on multiple focal plane images distorted by deformable mirror (DM) probing perturbations. In this paper, we report an efficient focal plane wavefront sensing approach for space-based AO which optimizes the DM probing perturbation and thus also the integration time for each image. Simulation of the AO system equipped with a vortex coronagraph has demonstrated that our new approach enables efficient information acquisition and significantly reduces the time needed for achieving high contrast in space.
