We perform a model independent analysis using the STU-formalism of Ref. 1, and then discuss how the Z-pole data from LEP and SLD can be used to constrain models that are not covered within that framework.

Abstract:This is a pedagogical and self-contained review on obtaining electroweak precision constraints on TeV scale new physics using the effective theory method. We identify a set of relevant effective operators in the standard model and calculate from them corrections to all major electroweak precision observables. The corrections are compared with data to put constraints on the effective operators. Various approaches and applications in the literature are reviewed.

Abstract:Recent reanalyses of the atomic physics effects on the weak charge in cesium have led to a value in much closer agreement with predictions of the standard model. We review precision electroweak tests, their implications for upper bounds on the mass of the Higgs boson, possible ways in which these bounds may be circumvented, and the requirements placed upon accuracy of future atomic parity violation experiments by these considerations.

Abstract:The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy. This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. This framework provides a model-independent prescription to put generic constraints on new physics and to study and combine large sets of experimental observables, assuming that the new physics scales are significantly higher than the EW scale.

Abstract:This review describes the current status of precision quantum chromodynamics (QCD) studies at the LHC. We introduce the main experimental and theoretical methods, and we discuss their cross-stimulated developments and recent advances. The different types of QCD observables that are measured at the LHC, including cross sections and event- and jet-level properties, for various final states, are summarized. Their relation to fundamental QCD dynamics and their impact on Standard Model parameter determinations are discussed using specific examples. The impact of QCD-related observables on direct and indirect searches for rare processes within and New Physics beyond the Standard Model is outlined.

Abstract:This is a review of electroweak precision physics with particular emphasis on low-energy precision measurements in the neutral current sector of the electroweak theory and includes future experimental prospects and the theoretical challenges one faces to interpret these observables. Within the minimal Standard Model they serve as determinations of the weak mixing angle which are competitive with and complementary to those obtained near the Z-resonance. In the context of new physics beyond the Standard Model these measurements are crucial to discriminate between models and to reduce the allowed parameter space within a given model. We illustrate this for the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with or without R-parity.

Abstract:This is an auspicious moment in experimental particle physics -there are large data samples at the Tevatron and a new energy regime being explored at the Large Hadron Collider with ever larger data samples. The coincidence of these two events suggests that we will soon be able to address the question, what lies beyond the standard model? Particle physics's current understanding of the universe is embodied in it. The model has been tested to extreme precision - better than a part in ten thousand - but we suspect that it is only an approximation, and that physics beyond this standard model will appear in the data of the Tevatron and LHC in the near future. This brief review touches on the status of searches for new physics at the time of the conference.

Abstract:This note presents constraints on Standard Model parameters using published and preliminary precision electroweak results measured at the electron-positron colliders LEP and SLC. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and DØat the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, Møller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in 2007 are new combinations of results on the W-boson mass and width and the mass of the top quark.
