Abstract:We review the current status of precision electroweak measurements and the constraints they impose on new physics. We perform a model independent analysis using the STU-formalism of Ref. 1, and then discuss how the Z-pole data from LEP and SLD can be used to constrain models that are not covered within that framework.

Abstract:The LEP precision physics requirements on the theoretical precision tag for the respective luminosity were $0.054 \%$ ($0.061\%$) at $M_Z$, where the former (latter) LEP result has (does not have) the pairs correction. For the contemplated FCC-ee, ILC, and CEPC Higgs/EW factories, one needs improvement at $M_Z$ to at least $0.01\%$ for the theoretical precision tag. We discuss the paths one may take to even exceed this latter goal and present an update on the current expectations for both $M_Z$ and proposed higher energy scenarios.

Abstract:The Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP) established the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics with unprecedented precision, including all its radiative corrections. These led to predictions for the masses of the top quark and Higgs boson, which were beautifully confirmed later on. After these precision measurements the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 1999 jointly to 't Hooft and Veltman "for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions in physics". Another hallmark of the LEP results were the precise measurements of the gauge coupling constants, which excluded unification of the forces within the SM, but allowed unification within the supersymmetric extension of the SM. This increased the interest in Supersymmetry (SUSY) and Grand Unified Theories, especially since the SM has no candidate for the elusive dark matter, while Supersymmetry provides an excellent candidate for dark matter. In addition, Supersymmetry removes the quadratic divergencies of the SM and {\it predicts} the Higgs mechanism from radiative electroweak symmetry breaking with a SM-like Higgs boson having a mass below 130 GeV in agreement with the Higgs boson discovery at the LHC. However, the predicted SUSY particles have not been found either because they are too heavy for the present LHC energy and luminosity or Nature has found alternative ways to circumvent the shortcomings of the SM.

Abstract:This note presents constraints on Standard Model parameters using published and preliminary precision electroweak results measured at the electron-positron colliders LEP and SLC. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and DØat the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, Møller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in 2007 are new combinations of results on the W-boson mass and width and the mass of the top quark.

Abstract:Bidding farewell to the LEP accelerator, we acknowledge that an essential part of its legacy is the immense amount of data collected during 5 years of the LEP1 stage, at the Z peak. This set of data allows for detailed studies of many phenomena, and particularly, of the final state interactions between hadrons. Presented here is a review of the most recent analyses in this area.

Abstract:In the process e+e−→hadrons, one of the effects of gluon emission is to modify the (1+cos2θ) form of the angular distribution of the thrust axis, an effect which may be quantified by the longitudinal cross-section. Using the OPAL detector at LEP, we have determined the longitudinal to total cross-section ratio to be σL/σtot=0.0127±0.0016±0.0013 at the parton level, in good agreement with the expectation of QCD computed to O(αs2). Comparisons at the hadron level with Monte Carlo models are presented. The dependence of the longitudinal cross-section on the value of thrust has also been studied, and provides a new test of QCD.

Abstract:Inclusive gamma*gamma interactions to hadronic final states where one scattered electron or positron is detected in the electromagnetic calorimeters have been studied in the LEP 1 data taken by ALEPH from 1991 to 1995. The event sample has been used to measure the hadronic structure function of the photon F-2(gamma) in three bins with < Q(2)> of 9.9, 20.7 and 284 GeV2. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Signatures of interband scattering in spectroscopic experiments on $MgB_2$

Abstract:Within a two-band, strong coupling model we analyze SIS-tunneling conductance, Raman scattering and optical conductivity measured on $MgB_2$ samples. We find that features observed in tunneling and Raman spectroscopy at intermediate energies $\omega=\Delta_{\sigma}+\Delta_{\pi}\simeq 8÷10meV$ can be consistently explained when incoherent scattering between $\sigma$ and $\pi$ band is considered. We calculate the optical conductivity and find that strong coupling effects are important for explaining the presently available data, and predict the location and magnitude of interband scattering features for this spectroscopic probe as well.

Abstract:The mass of the W boson is determined from the direct reconstruction of its decays into purely hadronic and semi-leptonic events in e+e- collisions at LEP. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 683 inverse picobarns collected with the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. To minimise any effect from colour reconnection a new procedure is adopted in which low energy particles are not considered in the mass determination from the purely hadronic channel. The combined result from all channels is Mw = 80.440+-0.043(stat.)+-0.024(syst.)+-0.009(FSI)+-0.009(LEP) GeV/c**2 where FSI represents the possible effects of final state interactions in the purely hadronic channel. From two-parameter fits to the W mass and width, the W width is found to be Gw = 2.14+-0.09(stat.)+-0.04(syst.)+-0.05(FSI)+-0.01(LEP) GeV

Abstract:This is a review of electroweak precision physics with particular emphasis on low-energy precision measurements in the neutral current sector of the electroweak theory and includes future experimental prospects and the theoretical challenges one faces to interpret these observables. Within the minimal Standard Model they serve as determinations of the weak mixing angle which are competitive with and complementary to those obtained near the Z-resonance. In the context of new physics beyond the Standard Model these measurements are crucial to discriminate between models and to reduce the allowed parameter space within a given model. We illustrate this for the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with or without R-parity.

Abstract:Cross sections, angular distributions and forward-backward asymmetries are presented, of two-fermion events produced in e + e - collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209 GeV at LEP, measured with the ALEPH detector. Results for e + e - , μ + μ - , τ + τ - , qq̄, bb̄ and cc̄ production are in agreement with the standard model predictions. Constraints are set on scenarios of new physics such as four-fermion contact interactions, leptoquarks, Z ′ bosons, TeV-scale quantum gravity and R-parity violating squarks and sneutrinos.
