Abstract:We compute the bounds from precision observables on alternative theories of electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that a cut-off as large as 3 TeV can be accomodated by the present data, without unnatural fine tuning.

Abstract:This note presents constraints on Standard Model parameters using published and preliminary precision electroweak results measured at the electron-positron colliders LEP and SLC. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and DØat the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, Møller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in 2007 are new combinations of results on the W-boson mass and width and the mass of the top quark.

Abstract:Precision measurements of anomalous quartic couplings of electroweak gauge bosons allow us to search for deviations of the Standard Model predictions and signals of new physics. Here, we obtain the constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings using the presently available data on the production of gauge-boson pairs via vector boson fusion. We work in the Higgs effective theory framework and obtain the present bounds on the operator's Wilson coefficients. We show that the combination of different datasets breaks the degeneracies in analysis with more than one nonvanishing Wilson coefficient. Abstract:We propose a set of precision muon-related observables that serve as a tool to constrain new physics models. Using LEP's precision measurements on the $Z$-boson pole, we derive bounds on the new physics quantum contributions to the decay $Z \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. We show that the new precision observables have a real impact on two specific models that solve the $g-2$ anomaly and provide a sound dark matter candidate.

New Physics at Tera-$Z$: Precision Renormalised

Abstract:We study the power of a Tera-$Z$ run at FCC-ee for indirectly detecting or constraining heavy new physics. Our main finding is that nearly every new particle which matches at tree level to dimension-six operators of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) affects electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) at either tree level or via one loop renormalisation group (RG) running. This is true almost regardless of the structure of couplings to the Standard Model; just a handful of exceptions are identified which can produce zeroes in the EWPO RG equations. Under simple flavour assumptions, we perform fits of each state to projected FCC-ee $Z$ pole measurements, showing that all scenarios can be tested at the TeV scale or better, with many projected exclusions reaching tens of TeV. Tera-$Z$ is argued to provide an almost inescapable probe of heavy new physics.

Abstract:The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss the impact of electroweak precision measurements on the present knowledge of particle physics, both in the framework of the Standard Model and of its most straightforward extensions. In Chapter 1 we give a general overview of the electroweak sector of the SM and of SUSY phenomenology. In Chapter 2 we deal with different definitions of the electroweak mixing angle, with particular attention to the relation between the phenomenological angle $\theta$ and the MS parameter $\hat\theta$. In Chapter 3 we use results found in the previous chapter to discuss in detail how both the decoupling and the non-decoupling approach to the running of coupling constants in the MS scheme produce the same numerical value of $m_{GUT}$, despite of the different initial conditions. In Chapter 4 we derive simple analytical formulas for the contribution of a chargino almost degenerate with the lightest neutralino to electroweak observables, showing that in the case of wino domination the study of oblique corrections allows a concrete improvement of experimental bounds on chargino mass. Finally, in Chapter 5 we consider the possibility of extra fermion generations, proving that they are strongly disfavoured by the present experimental data if all particles are heavier that Z-boson, while for the specific case of the extra neutrino around 50 GeV in mass (still allowed by experimental data) the quality of the fit is not worse than the SM.

Precise interpretations of traditional fine-tuning measures

Abstract:We uncover two precise interpretations of traditional electroweak fine-tuning (FT) measures that were historically missed. (i) a statistical interpretation: the traditional FT measure shows the change in plausibility of a model in which a parameter was exchanged for the $Z$ boson mass relative to an untuned model in light of the $Z$ boson mass measurement. (ii) an information-theoretic interpretation: the traditional FT measure shows the exponential of the extra information, measured in nats, relative to an untuned model that you must supply about a parameter in order to fit the $Z$ mass. We derive the mathematical results underlying these interpretations, and explain them using examples from weak scale supersymmetry. These new interpretations shed fresh light on historical and recent studies using traditional FT measures.

Abstract:In this talk we survey the SSC and LHC signals and backgrounds for the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking. We study the process $pp \rightarrow WWX$ and compute the rate for the ``gold-plated'' signals $W^\pm \rightarrow \ell^\pm \nu$ and $Z \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ $(\ell = e,\mu)$ for a wide variety of models. We use a forward jet tag and central jet veto to suppress the standard-model backgrounds. In this way we estimate the SSC and LHC sensitivities to the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking.

Abstract:The CDF collaboration recently reported a new precise measurement of the $W$ boson mass $M_W$ with a central value significantly larger than the SM prediction. We explore the effects of including this new measurement on a fit of the Standard Model (SM) to electroweak precision data. We characterize the tension of this new measurement with the SM and explore potential beyond the SM phenomena within the electroweak sector in terms of the oblique parameters $S$, $T$ and $U$. We show that the large $M_W$ value can be accommodated in the fit by a large, nonzero value of $U$, which is difficult to construct in explicit models. Assuming $U = 0$, the electroweak fit strongly prefers large, positive values of $T$. Finally, we study how the preferred values of the oblique parameters may be generated in the context of models affecting the electroweak sector at tree- and loop-level. In particular, we demonstrate that the preferred values of $T$ and $S$ can be generated with a real SU(2)$_L$ triplet scalar, the humble "swino," which can be heavy enough to evade current collider constraints, or by (multiple) species of a singlet-doublet fermion pair. We highlight challenges in constructing other simple models, such as a dark photon, for explaining a large $M_W$ value, and several directions for further study.
Probing Top-quark Operators with Precision Electroweak Measurements

Abstract:In the standard model effective field theory, operators involving the top quark are generally difficult to probe and can generate sizable loop contributions to electroweak precision observables measured by past and future lepton colliders. Could the high precision of electroweak measurements compensate for loop suppression and provide competitive reaches on these operators? Would the inclusion of these contributions introduce too many additional parameters for a meaningful global electroweak analysis to be performed? In this paper, we perform a detailed phenomenological study to address these two important questions. Focusing on eight dimension-6 operators that generate anomalous couplings between electroweak gauge bosons and third-generation quarks, we calculate their one loop contributions to e(+)e(-) -> f (f) over bar processes, both on and off the Z-pole, and the e(+)e(-) -> WW process. A global analysis is performed with these eight operators and those that contribute to the above processes at tree level using measurements at the LEP, SLC, and several low energy experiments. We find that although current electroweak precision measurements are sensitive to the one-loop effects of top-quark operators, it is difficult to separate them from the operators that contribute at tree level, making a global analysis rather challenging. Under further assumptions (for instance, new physics contributes to only third generation quark operators and the S and T parameters), competitive reaches may be obtained in a global fit. Another important finding of our study is that the two operators that generate the dipole interactions of the bottom quark have a significant impact on the Z-pole measurements and should not be omitted. We also discuss the implications of the recently reported W-boson mass measurement at the CDF for our results. Finally, we estimate the reaches of future lepton colliders in probing top-quark operators with precision electroweak measurements.
Precision unification and the scale of supersymmetry

Abstract:In this paper, we study the implications of precise gauge coupling unification on supersymmetric particle masses. We argue that precise unification favors the superpartner masses that are in the range of several TeV and well beyond. We demonstrate this in the minimal supersymmetric theory with a common sparticle mass threshold, and two simple high-scale scenarios; minimal supergravity and minimal anomaly-mediated supersymmetry. We also identify candidate models with a Higgsino or a wino dark matter candidate. Finally, the analysis shows unambiguously that unless one takes foggy naturalness notions too seriously, the lack of direct superpartner discoveries at the LHC has not diminished the viability of supersymmetric unified theories in general nor even precision unification in particular. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.L011704 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Bounds on Kaluza-Klein excitations of the SM vector bosons from electroweak tests

Abstract:Within a minimal extension of the SM in 4+1 dimensions, we study how Kaluza-Klein excitations of the SM gauge bosons affect the electroweak precision observables. Asymmetries in Z decays provide the dominant bound on the compactification scale M of the extra dimension. If the higgs is so light that will be discovered at LEP2, we find the following 95%C.L. bounds: M>3.5TeV (if the higgs lives in the extra dimension) and M>4.3TeV (if the higgs is confined to our 4 dimensions). In the second case, Kaluza-Klein modes give `universal' corrections and a good fit of precision data can be obtained with a heavier higgs (up to 500GeV) and with a smaller M>3.4TeV.

Abstract:We study the electromagnetic coupling of the array of Gaussian and multi-moded horn antennas to the dual-reflector submillimeter-wave telescope on the ESA PLANCK Surveyor designed for measuring the temperature anisotropies and polarization characteristics of the cosmic microwave background. In this paper, we present the results of our analysis concerning the measurement of polarization with tilted off-axis dual-reflector Gregorian telescope and the propagation of multi-moded beams through such a system.

Abstract:The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy. This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. This framework provides a model-independent prescription to put generic constraints on new physics and to study and combine large sets of experimental observables, assuming that the new physics scales are significantly higher than the EW scale.

Outlook for the Theoretical Precision of the Luminosity at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:The LEP precision physics requirements on the theoretical precision tag for the respective luminosity were $0.054 \%$ ($0.061\%$) at $M_Z$, where the former (latter) LEP result has (does not have) the pairs correction. For the contemplated FCC-ee, ILC, and CEPC Higgs/EW factories, one needs improvement at $M_Z$ to at least $0.01\%$ for the theoretical precision tag. We discuss the paths one may take to even exceed this latter goal and present an update on the current expectations for both $M_Z$ and proposed higher energy scenarios.
