Abstract:The formulation of classical mechanics applicable to fermionic degrees of freedom is presented in mathematically rigorous terms, including a description of how the mathematical structure relates to the quantization of the theory. Canonical transformations and the algebra of observables are defined and studied. A formula is given for the analog of the Poisson bracket. The quantization of the theory proceeds according to deformation quantization.

Abstract:The path integral for ghost fermions, which is heuristically made use of in the Batalin- Fradkin-Vilkovisky approach to quantization of constrained systems, is derived from first principles. The derivation turns out to be rather different from that of physical fermions since the definition of Dirac states for ghost fermions is subtle. With these results at hand, it is then shown that the nonminimal extension of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator must be chosen differently from the notorious choice made in the literature in order to avoid the boundary terms that have always plagued earlier treatments. Furthermore it is pointed out that the elimination of states with nonzero ghost number requires the introduction of a thermodynamic potential for ghosts; the reason is that Schwarz's Lefschetz formula for the partition function of the time- evolution operator is not capable, despite claims to the contrary, to get rid of nonzero ghost number states on its own. Finally, we comment on the problems of global topological nature that one faces in the attempt to obtain the solutions of the Dirac condition for physical states in a configuration space of nontrivial geometry; such complications give rise to anomalies that do not obey the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions.

Abstract:We investigate vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive Dirac field in flat spacetime with a toroidal subspace of a general dimension. Quasiperiodicity conditions with arbitrary phases are imposed on the field operator along compact dimensions. These phases are interpreted in terms of magnetic fluxes enclosed by compact dimensions. The equation of state in the uncompact subspace is of the cosmological constant type. It is shown that, in addition to the diagonal components, the vacuum energy-momentum tensor has nonzero off-diagonal components. In special cases of twisted (antiperiodic) and untwisted (periodic) fields the off diagonal components vanish. For untwisted fields the vacuum energy density is positive and the energy-momentum tensor obeys the strong energy condition. For general values of the phases in the periodicity conditions the energy density and stresses can be either positive or negative. The numerical results are given for a Kaluza-Klein type model with two extra dimensions.

Abstract:I review the formalism of patch bosonization of Fermi surfaces, with a focus on the problem of a two-dimensional metal at a quantum critical point. I argue that this formalism is fundamentally inapplicable to the problem, except in synthetic limits. One such limit is the small-$N$ limit, which was already discussed in early studies of the problem; a similar but slightly less unphysical large-$N$ limit is proposed. I show that it is at least formally possible to construct perturbative expansions around these synthetic limits. However, I argue that nonperturbative effects become important when $N\sim1$.

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of cosmological particle production of Dirac fermions in a Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime, focusing on a (1+1)-dimensional case in which the evolution of the scale factor is set by the equations of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. As a first step towards a quantum simulation of this phenomenon, we consider two possible lattice regularizations, which allow us to explore the interplay of particle production and topological phenomena in spacetimes with a boundary. In particular, for a Wilson-type discretization of the Dirac field, the asymptotic Minkowski vacua connected by the intermediate expansion corresponds to symmetry-protected topological groundstates, and have a boundary manifestation in the form of zero-modes exponentially localized to the spatial boundaries. We show that particle production can also populate these zero modes, which contrasts with the situation with a naïve-fermion discretization, in which conformal zero-mass fields exhibit no particle production. We present a scheme for the quantum simulation of this gravitational analogue by means of ultra-cold atoms in Raman optical lattices, which requires real-time control of the Raman-beam detuning according to the scale factor of the simulated spacetime, as well as band-mapping measurements.

Observation of Dynamical Fermionization

Abstract:The wave function of a Tonks-Girardeau (T-G) gas of strongly interacting bosons in one dimension maps onto the absolute value of the wave function of a noninteracting Fermi gas. Although this fermionization makes many aspects of the two gases identical, their equilibrium momentum distributions are quite different. We observed dynamical fermionization, where the momentum distribution of a T-G gas evolves from bosonic to fermionic after its axial confinement is removed. The asymptotic momentum distribution after expansion in one dimension is the distribution of rapidities, which are the conserved quantities associated with many-body integrable systems. Our measurements agree well with T-G gas theory. We also studied momentum evolution after the trap depth is suddenly changed to a new nonzero value, and we observed the theoretically predicted bosonic-fermionic oscillations.

We derive the effective action within Path Integral formalism considering the interaction of external electromagnetic field and Lorentz violating background fields with quantum fermions. To introduce the temperature effects, we employ the Matsubara formalism. Comments about the corresponding phenomenology are also made.

Abstract:In this work we revisit the famous Fermi two-atom problem, which concerns how relativistic causality impacts atomic transition probabilities, using the tools from relativistic quantum information and algebraic quantum field theory. The problem has sparked different analyses from many directions and angles since the proposed solution by Buchholz and Yngvason [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 , 613 (1994)]. Some of these analyses employ various approximations, heuristics, and perturbative methods, which tends to render some of the otherwise useful insights somewhat obscured. It is also noted that they are all studied in flat spacetime. We show that current tools in relativistic quantum information, combined with an algebraic approach to quantum field theory, are now powerful enough to provide fuller and cleaner analysis of the Fermi two-atom problem for arbitrary curved spacetimes in a completely nonperturbative manner. Our result gives the original solution of Buchholz and Yngvason a very operational reinterpretation in terms of qubits interacting with a quantum field and allows for various natural generalizations and inclusion of detector-based local measurement for the quantum field [ Phys.
