Abstract:Nontopological fermionic solitons exist across a diverse range of particle physics models and have rich cosmological implications. This study establishes a general framework for calculating fermionic soliton profiles under arbitrary scalar potentials, utilizing relativistic mean field theory to accurately depict the interaction between the fermion condensate and the background scalar field. Within this framework, the conventional fermion bound states are revealed as a subset of fermionic solitons. In addition, we demonstrate how the analytical formulae in previous studies are derived as special cases of our algorithm, discussing the validity of such approximations. Furthermore, we explore the phenomenology of fermionic solitons, highlighting new formation mechanisms and evolution paths, and reconsidering the possibility of collapse into primordial black holes.

Topological Solitons in Discrete Space-Time as the Model of Fermions

Abstract:In the present paper we discuss arguments, favouring the view that massive fermions represent dislocations (i.e. topological solitons) in discrete space-time with Burgers vectors, parallel to an axis of time. If to put symmetrical parts of tensors of distortions (i.e. derivatives of atomic displacements on coordinates) and mechanical stresses equal zero, the equations of the field theory of dislocations get the form of the Maxwell equations. If to consider these tensors as symmetrical, we shall receive the equations of the theory of gravitation, and it turns out that the sum of tensor of distortions and pseudo-Euclidean metrical tensor is the analogue of metrical tensor. It is shown that we can also get Dirac equation with four-fermion interaction in the framework of the field theory of dislocations. This model explains quantization of electrical charge: it is proportional to the topological charge of dislocation, and this charge accepts quantized values because of discrete structure of the 4-dimensional lattice.

Monopole-Fermion Scattering and the Solution to the Semiton/Unitarity Puzzle

Abstract:We study Polchinski's "fermion-rotor system" as an accurate description of charged Weyl fermions scattering on a magnetic monopole core in the limit of zero gauge coupling. Traditionally it was thought such scattering could lead to fractional particle numbers ("semitons"). By direct calculations we show those semitonic processes are in fact free propagation, facilitated by composite fermion-rotor operators interpolating the "forbidden" states, effectively "recovering" both ingoing and outgoing states in every lowest partial wave. Non-semitonic Callan-Rubakov processes are unchanged.

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Abstract:The modern semiclassical theory of a Bloch electron in a magnetic field now encompasses the orbital magnetic moment and the geometric phase. These two notions are encoded in the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition as a phase (λ) that is subleading in powers of the field; λ is measurable in the phase offset of the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation, as well as of fixed-bias oscillations of the differential conductance in tunneling spectroscopy. In some solids and for certain field orientations, λ/π are robustly integer-valued owing to the symmetry of the extremal orbit, i.e., they are the topological invariants of magnetotransport. Our comprehensive symmetry analysis identifies solids in any (magnetic) space group for which λ is a topological invariant, as well as identifies the symmetry-enforced degeneracy of Landau levels. The analysis is simplified by our formulation of ten (and only ten) symmetry classes for closed, Fermi-surface orbits. Case studies are discussed for graphene, transition metal dichalchogenides, 3D Weyl and Dirac metals, and crystalline and ℤ_2 topological insulators. In particular, we point out that a π phase offset in the fundamental oscillation should not be viewed as a smoking gun for a 3D Dirac metal.
Numerical identification and gapped boundaries of abelian fermionic topological order

Abstract:In this work we consider general fermion systems in two spatial dimensions, both with and without charge conservation symmetry, which realize a nontrivial fermionic topological order with only Abelian anyons. We address the question of precisely how these quantum phases differ from their bosonic counterparts, both in terms of their edge physics and in the way one would identify them in numerics. As in previous works, we answer these questions by studying the theory obtained after gauging the global fermion parity symmetry, which turns out to have a special and simple structure. Using this structure, a minimal scheme is outlined for how to numerically identify a general Abelian fermionic topological order, without making use of fermion number conservation. Along the way, some subtleties of the momentum polarization technique are discussed. Regarding the edge physics, it is shown that the gauged theory can have a (bosonic) gapped boundary to the vacuum if and only if the ungauged fermion theory has a gapped boundary as well.

Abstract:"What is the difference between space and time?" is an ancient question that remains a matter of intense debate. In Newtonian mechanics time is absolute, while in Einstein's theory of relativity time and space combine into Minkowski spacetime. Here, we firstly propose Minkowski fermions in 2+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime which have two space-like and one time-like momentum axes. These quasiparticles can be further classified as Klein-Gordon fermions and Dirac-Minkowski fermions according to the linearly and quadratically dispersing excitations. Realization of Dirac-Minkowski quasiparticles requires systems with particular topological nodal-line band degeneracies, such as hyperbolic nodal lines or coplanar band crossings. With the help of first-principles calculations we find that novel massless Dirac-Minkowski fermions are realized in a metastable bulk boron allotrope, Pnnm-B16.
Bosonization of 2+1 dimensional fermions on the surface of topological insulators

Abstract:Three-dimensional topological insulators can be described by an effective field theory involving two `hydrodynamic' Abelian gauge fields. The action contains a bulk topological BF term and a surface term, called loop model. This describes the massless 2+1 dimensional excitations and provides them with a semiclassical, yet non-trivial conformal invariant dynamics. Given that topological insulators are originally fermionic, this physical setting is ideal for realizing the bosonization of massless fermions in terms of gauge fields. Building on earlier analyses of the loop model, we find that fermions belong to the solitonic spectrum and can be described by Wilson lines, through the generalization of 1+1 dimensional vertex operators. Their correlation functions agree with conformal invariance. The bosonic loop model is then mapped into a fermionic theory by using the general construction of fermionic topological phases described in the literature. It requires the identification of the characteristic one-form $Z_2$ symmetry of the bosonic theory and its gauging, which originates the fermion number $(-1)^F$, the spin sectors and the time reversal symmetry obeying ${\cal T}^2=(-1)^F$. These results are detailed for the effective action and the partition function on the geometry $S^2\times S^1$.

Fermion-Monopole Scattering in the Standard Model

Abstract:We study the scattering of fermions off 't Hooft lines in the Standard Model. A long-standing paradox suggests that the outgoing fermions necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. In a previous paper, we resolved this paradox in the context of a number of toy models where we showed that the outgoing radiation is created by operators that are attached to a co-dimension 1 topological surface. This shifts the quantum numbers of the outgoing states associated to non-anomalous symmetries to be integer valued as required, while the quantum numbers associated to anomalous symmetries are fractional. Here we apply these ideas to the Standard Model.

Abstract:In the presence of topologically nontrivial bosonic field configurations, the fermion number operator may take on fractional eigenvalues, because of the existence of zero-energy fermion modes. The simplest examples of this occur in 1+1 dimensions, with zero modes attached to kink-type solitons. In the presence of a kink-antikink pair, the two associated zero modes bifurcate into positive and negative energy levels with energies $\pm ge^{-g\Delta}$, in terms of the Yukawa coupling $g\ll 1$ and the distance $\Delta$ between the kink and antikink centers. When the kink and antikink are moving, it seems that there could be Landau-Zener-like transitions between these two fermionic modes, which would be interpretable as the creation or annihilation of fermion-antifermion pairs; however, with only two solitons in relative motion, this does not occur. If a third solitary wave is introduced farther away to perturb the kink-antikink system, a movement of the faraway kink can induce transitions between the discrete fermion modes bound to the solitons. These state changes can be interpreted globally as creation or destruction of a novel type of pair: a half-fermion and a half-antifermion. The production of the half-integral pairs will dominate over other particle production channels as long as the solitary waves remain well separated, so that there is a manifold of discrete fermion states whose energies are either zero or exponentially close to zero.

Non-Fermi Liquids from Dipolar Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:The emergence of fractonic topological phases and novel universality classes for quantum dynamics highlights the importance of dipolar symmetry in condensed matter systems. In this work, we study the properties of symmetry-breaking phases of the dipolar symmetries in fermionic models in various spatial dimensions. In such systems, fermions obtain energy dispersion through dipole condensation. Due to the nontrivial commutation between the translation symmetry and dipolar symmetry, the Goldstone modes of the dipolar condensate are strongly coupled to the dispersive fermions and naturally give rise to non-Fermi liquids at low energies. The IR description of the dipolar symmetry-breaking phase is analogous to the well-known theory of a Fermi surface coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field. We also discuss the crossover behavior when the dipolar symmetry is slightly broken and the cases with anisotropic dipolar conservation.

Abstract:It is shown that an arbitrary Fermion hopping hamiltonian can be represented by a system with no fermion fields, generalising earlier results by M. Levin & X.G. Wen [Phys Rev B 67, 245316 (2003)]. All the operators in the hamiltonian of resulting description obey the principle of locality, that operators associated with different sites commute, despite the system having excitations obeying Fermi statistics. Whilst extra conserved degrees of freedom are introduced, they are all locally identified in the representation obtained. The same methods apply to Majorana (half) fermions, which for cartesian lattices mitigate the Fermion Doubling Problem. The generality of these results suggests that the observation of Fermion excitations in nature does not demand that anticommuting Fermion fields are fundamental.

Abstract:The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green's function and show that in this model they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite "lifetime." We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. This model provides a fertile ground for controlled studies of the phenomenology of Green's function zeros and the underlying exactly solvable lattice gauge theory illustrates the synergetic cross pollination between solid-state theory, high-energy physics, and quantum information science. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.136504 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Composing parafermions: a construction of $Z_{N}$ fractional quantum Hall systems and a modern understanding of confinement and duality

Abstract:In this work, we propose a modern view of the integer spin simple currents which have played a central role in discrete torsion. We reintroduce them as nonanomalous composite particles constructed from $Z_{N}$ parafermionic field theories. These composite particles have an analogy with the Cooper pair in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and can be interpreted as a typical example of anyon condensation. Based on these $Z_{N}$ anomaly free composite particles, we propose a systematic construction of the cylinder partition function of $Z_{N}$ fractional quantum Hall effects (FQHEs). One can expect realizations of a class of general topological ordered systems by breaking the bulk-edge correspondence of the bosonic parts of these FQH models. We also give a brief overview of various phenomena in contemporary condensed matter physics, such as $SU(N)$ Haldane conjecture, general gapless and gapped topological order with respect to the quantum anomaly defined by charges of these simple currents and bulk and boundary renormalization group flow. Moreover, we point out an analogy between these FQHEs and 2d quantum gravities coupled to matter, and propose a $Z_{N}$ generalization of supersymmetry known as "fractional supersymmetry" in the composite parafermionic theory and study its analogy with quark confinement. Our analysis gives a simple but general understanding of the contemporary physics of topological phases in the form of the partition functions derived from the operator formalism.

Topological holography for fermions

Abstract:Topological holography is a conjectured correspondence between the symmetry charges and defects of a $D$-dimensional system with the anyons in a $(D+1)$-dimensional topological order: the symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). Topological holography is conjectured to capture the topological aspects of symmetry in gapped and gapless systems, with different phases corresponding to different gapped boundaries (anyon condensations) of the SymTFT. This correspondence was previously considered primarily for bosonic systems, excluding many phases of condensed matter systems involving fermionic electrons. In this work, we extend the SymTFT framework to establish a topological holography correspondence for fermionic systems. We demonstrate that this fermionic SymTFT framework captures the known properties of $1+1D$ fermion gapped phases and critical points, including the classification, edge-modes, and stacking rules of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs), and computation of partition functions of fermionic conformal field theories (CFTs). Beyond merely reproducing known properties, we show that the SymTFT approach can additionally serve as a practical tool for discovering new physics, and use this framework to construct a new example of a fermionic intrinsically gapless SPT phase characterized by an emergent fermionic anomaly.

Majorana fermions and topological quantum computation

Abstract:In 1937, Majorana noticed that in a different representation the relativistic wave equation for electrons proposed by Dirac has a solution describing chargeless neutral fermi-ons, which have completely different properties from Dirac fermions. In particle physics, the search for such Majorana fermions is still being pursued, while in condensed matter physics it has already been found that certain kinds of quasiparticles in the low-energy excitations of topological superconductors and fractional quantum Hall effects share a similar behavior to Majorana fermi-ons. In particular, the vortex excitations in two-dimensional topological superconductors include zero-energy Majorana fermion modes, which exhibit non-abelian anyonic statistical properties un-der exchange operations, leading to the possibility of topological quantum computation. In this ar-ticle we will review the physical models and realization of Majorana fermions, and then discuss the corresponding implementation of topological quantum computation.
Experimental proposal to probe the extended Pauli principle

Abstract:All matter is made up of fermions -- one of the fundamental type of particles in nature. Fermions follow the Pauli exclusion principle, stating that two or more identical fermions cannot occupy the same quantum state. Antisymmetry of the fermionic wavefunction, however, implies additional constraints on the natural occupation numbers. These constraints depend on the dimensionality and purity of the system and have so far not been explored experimentally. Here, we propose an experiment in a system of multiple quantum dots capable of producing the highly entangled fermionic states necessary to reach the regime, where these additional constraints become dominant and can be probed. The type and strength of the required multi-fermion entanglement provides barriers to reaching deep into this regime. Transcending these barriers thus serves as a testing ground for the capabilities of future fermionic quantum information processing as well as quantum computer architectures based on fermionic states.

Abstract:Exploration of topology is central in condensed matter physics and applications to fault-tolerant quantum information. The bulk-boundary correspondence and tenfold classification determine the topological state compared to a vacuum. Contrary to this belief, we demonstrate that topological zero-energy domain-wall states can emerge for all forbidden 1D classes of the tenfold classification table. The guiding principle is that the difference in the topological quantities of two trivial domains can be quantized, and hence, a topologically protected state can emerge at the domain wall. Such nontrivial domain-wall states are demonstrated using generalized Su-Schrieffeer-Heeger and generalized Kitaev models, which manifest quantized polarization and Majorana fermions, respectively. The quantized Berry phase difference between the domains protects the non-trivial nature of the domain-wall states, extending the bulk-boundary correspondence, also confirmed by the tight-binding and Jackiw-Rebbi methods. Furthermore, we show that the seemingly trivial electronic and superconducting models can be transformed into their topological counterparts in the framework of the topological Fermi-liquid theory. Finally, we propose potential systems where our results may be realized, spanning from electronic and superconducting to optical systems.

Abstract:We study fermionic topological phases using the technique of fermion condensation. We give a prescription for performing fermion condensation in bosonic topological phases which contain a fermion. Our approach to fermion condensation can roughly be understood as coupling the parent bosonic topological phase to a phase of physical fermions, and condensing pairs of physical and emergent fermions. There are two distinct types of objects in fermionic theories, which we call "m-type" and "q-type" particles. The endomorphism algebras of q-type particles are complex Clifford algebras, and they have no analogues in bosonic theories. We construct a fermionic generalization of the tube category, which allows us to compute the quasiparticle excitations in fermionic topological phases. We then prove a series of results relating data in condensed theories to data in their parent theories; for example, if $\mathcal{C}$ is a modular tensor category containing a fermion, then the tube category of the condensed theory satisfies $\textbf{Tube}(\mathcal{C}/\psi) \cong \mathcal{C} \times (\mathcal{C}/\psi)$. We also study how modular transformations, fusion rules, and coherence relations are modified in the fermionic setting, prove a fermionic version of the Verlinde dimension formula, construct a commuting projector lattice Hamiltonian for fermionic theories, and write down a fermionic version of the Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury state sum. A large portion of this work is devoted to three detailed examples of performing fermion condensation to produce fermionic topological phases: we condense fermions in the Ising theory, the $SO(3)_6$ theory, and the $\frac{1}{2}\text{E}_6$ theory, and compute the quasiparticle excitation spectrum in each of these examples.
