Abstract:In the presence of topologically nontrivial bosonic field configurations, the fermion number operator may take on fractional eigenvalues, because of the existence of zero-energy fermion modes. The simplest examples of this occur in 1+1 dimensions, with zero modes attached to kink-type solitons. In the presence of a kink-antikink pair, the two associated zero modes bifurcate into positive and negative energy levels with energies $\pm ge^{-g\Delta}$, in terms of the Yukawa coupling $g\ll 1$ and the distance $\Delta$ between the kink and antikink centers. When the kink and antikink are moving, it seems that there could be Landau-Zener-like transitions between these two fermionic modes, which would be interpretable as the creation or annihilation of fermion-antifermion pairs; however, with only two solitons in relative motion, this does not occur. If a third solitary wave is introduced farther away to perturb the kink-antikink system, a movement of the faraway kink can induce transitions between the discrete fermion modes bound to the solitons. These state changes can be interpreted globally as creation or destruction of a novel type of pair: a half-fermion and a half-antifermion. The production of the half-integral pairs will dominate over other particle production channels as long as the solitary waves remain well separated, so that there is a manifold of discrete fermion states whose energies are either zero or exponentially close to zero.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the phenomenon that the fermion number operator may take fractional eigenvalues in a specific background field. Specifically, when there is a topologically non - trivial bosonic field configuration, due to the existence of zero - energy fermion modes, the fermion number may not be an integer. The paper mainly focuses on half - fermion pairs generated by solitons (especially kink - type solitons) in 1 + 1 - dimensional space. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Existence of Zero - Energy Fermion Modes**: In 1+1 - dimensional space, when there is a topologically non - trivial bosonic field configuration, the fermion number operator can take fractional eigenvalues. This is caused by the existence of zero - energy fermion modes. 2. **Energy Splitting in Kink - Anti - Kink Pairs**: When there is a kink - anti - kink pair, the two related zero - energy modes will split into positive and negative energy levels, with energies of \(\pm g e^{-g\Delta}\) respectively, where \(g\) is the Yukawa coupling constant and \(\Delta\) is the distance between the centers of the kink and the anti - kink. 3. **Landau - Zener - like Transitions**: When the kink and the anti - kink move relatively, a transition similar to Landau - Zener may occur theoretically, which can be interpreted as the creation or annihilation of fermion - anti - fermion pairs. However, this transition will not occur only when the two solitons move relatively. 4. **Effect of Introducing a Third Soliton**: If a third distant soliton is introduced to perturb the kink - anti - kink system, the movement of the distant soliton will induce transitions between discrete fermion modes. These state changes can be globally interpreted as the creation or annihilation of half - fermions and half - anti - fermions pairs. 5. **Generation of Semi - Integral Pairs**: As long as the solitons remain sufficiently separated, the generation of semi - integral pairs will dominate other particle generation channels. Therefore, there is a manifold containing discrete fermion states, whose energies are either zero or close to zero. ### Main Conclusions - **Generation of Half - Fermion Pairs**: Under specific conditions, the creation or annihilation of half - fermions and half - anti - fermions pairs can be induced by introducing a third soliton. - **Calculation of Energy Splitting**: The paper calculates in detail the energy splitting of fermion modes in kink - anti - kink pairs and discusses the behavior of these modes under different conditions. - **Calculation of Transition Probabilities**: By introducing a third soliton, the transition probabilities between different discrete states are calculated, and the physical meanings of these transitions are explained. ### Formula Display - **Energy Splitting Formula**: \[ E_{\pm}=\pm g e^{-g\Delta} \] where \(g\) is the Yukawa coupling constant and \(\Delta\) is the distance between the centers of the kink and the anti - kink. - **Wave Function of Zero - Energy Modes**: \[ \Psi_{K1}=\left(\frac{g\Gamma(g + \frac{1}{2})}{\sqrt{\pi}\Gamma(g + 1)}\right)^{1/2}\begin{pmatrix}\text{sech}^g(x - x_{K1})\\0\end{pmatrix} \] \[ \Psi_{A}=\left(\frac{g\Gamma(g + \frac{1}{2})}{\sqrt{\pi}\Gamma(g + 1)}\right)^{1/2}\begin{pmatrix}0\\\text{sech}^g(x - x_{A})\end{pmatrix} \] - **Wave Function of the Ground State**: \[ \Psi_{-}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\begin{pmatrix}\psi_{K1}\\\psi_{A}\end{pmatrix} \] \[ E_{-}=-g e^{-g(x_A - x_{K1})} \] - **Wave Function of the Excited State**: \[ \Psi_{+}=\sigma_3\Psi_{-}
