Abstract:By using a real matrix translation, we propose a coupled eigenvalue problem for octonionic operators. In view of possible applications in quantum mechanics, we also discuss the hermiticity of such operators. Previous difficulties in formulating a consistent octonionic Hilbert space are solved by using the new coupled eigenvalue problem and introducing an appropriate scalar product for the probability amplitudes.

Abstract:In this paper, the octonion matrix equation is studied based on semi-tensor product of matrices. Firstly, we propose the left real element representation and the right real element representation of octonion. Then we obtain the expression of the least squares Hermitian solution to the octonion matrix equation by combining these representations with -representation of the special matrices. In addition, we also put forward the equivalent condition of existence and general expression of the Hermitian solution to the octonion matrix equation Finally, the validity and stability of our method is verified by numerical experiments.

Abstract:Large scale matrix eigenproblems arise in a lot of disciplines and scientific and engineering computations. Efficient and reliable numerical methods for solving them are extremely important as they play a vital role in innumerable scientific applications. In this paper, we attempt to review state of the art of theory and algorithms of commonly used numerical methods for large scale nonsymmetric (non-Hermitian) eigenproblems. We finally pose some challenging problems on the existing three kinds of popular solvers: orthogonal projection methods, oblique projection methods and refined projection methods.

Abstract:Hermitian tensors are generalizations of Hermitian matrices, but they have very different properties. Every complex Hermitian tensor is a sum of complex Hermitian rank-1 tensors. However, this is not true for the real case. We study basic properties for Hermitian tensors such as Hermitian decompositions and Hermitian ranks. For canonical basis tensors, we determine their Hermitian ranks and decompositions. For real Hermitian tensors, we give a full characterization for them to have Hermitian decompositions over the real field. In addition to traditional flattening, Hermitian tensors specially have Hermitian and Kronecker flattenings, which may give different lower bounds for Hermitian ranks. We also study other topics such as eigenvalues, positive semidefiniteness, sum of squares representations, and separability.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the Hermitian completely positive (HCP) matrix, which has a Hermitian completely positive (HCP) decomposition with all real and imaginary parts of the decomposition vectors being nonnegative. Some properties of the Hermitian completely positive matrix are given. A semidefinite algorithm is also proposed for checking whether a Hermitian matrix is HCP or not. If a matrix is not HCP, a certificate for it can be obtained; if it is, an HCP decomposition can be obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we study ternary algebras of third-order hypermatrices. By hypermatrix we mean a complex-valued variable with three indices, which is also called a three-dimensional matrix or spatial matrix. We assume that a hypermatrix is defined in three-dimensional Euclidean space and when this space is rotated, it transforms as a SO(3)-tensor. We consider two ternary multiplications of hypermatrices, which have the property of generalized associativity. We explore the geometric meaning of two independent SO(3)-invariants of hypermatrices and show that one of them defines a Hermitian metric. We study the 10-dimensional subspace of hypermatrices, known in the theory of representations of the rotation group, as the space of the weight 2 tensor representation of the rotation group. It is proved that the elements of this subspace that satisfy the regularity condition are right biunits of the ternary algebra of hypermatrices. The motivation for studying biunits of ternary algebra of hypermatrices was a ternary generalization of the Pauli exclusion principle.

Abstract:A real square matrix with positive row sums and all its off-diagonal elements bounded below by the corresponding row means is called a $C$-matrix, which is introduced by Peña [Exclusion and inclusion intervals for the real eigenvalues of positive matrices, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 26 (2005), pp. 908-917]. In this paper, a new class of nonsingular matrices—$MC$-matrices containing $C$-matrices—is first defined. By properties of a subclass of $MC$-matrices, we present new exclusion intervals of the real eigenvalues of a real matrix, which are further applied to localize the real eigenvalues different from 1 of a positive stochastic matrix. Secondly, an inclusion interval for the real parts of eigenvalues of a real matrix is established. Finally, for real matrices with nonnegative off-diagonal elements, lower and upper bounds of real eigenvalues are obtained. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are derived to indicate that the real inclusion intervals provided by Peña [On an alternative to Gerschgorin circles and ovals of Cassini, Numer. Math., 95 (2003), pp. 337-345] are subsets of those provided by the ovals of Cassini.

Abstract:This paper studies algebraic properties of Hermitian solutions and Hermitian definite solutions of the two types of matrix equation $AX = B$ and $AXA^* = B$. We first establish a variety of rank and inertia formulas for calculating the maximal and minimal ranks and inertias of Hermitian solutions and Hermitian definite solutions of the matrix equations $AX = B$ and $AXA^* = B$, and then use them to characterize many qualities and inequalities for Hermitian solutions and Hermitian definite solutions of the two matrix equations and their variations.

This is a well-known result in group theory. In this paper, we prove two analogous theorems on matrices, which have independence significance. Abstract:Matrix theory is essential for addressing practical problems and executing computational tasks. Matrices related to Hermite polynomials are essential due to their applications in quantum mechanics, numerical analysis, probability, and signal processing. Their orthogonality, recurrence relations, and spectral properties make them a valuable tool for both theoretical research and practical applications. From a different perspective, we introduced a variant of the Hermite matrix that incorporates triple factorials and demonstrated that this matrix satisfies various properties. By utilizing effective matrix algebra techniques, various algebraic properties of this matrix have been determined, including the product formula, inverse matrix and eigenvalues. Additionally, we extended this matrix to a more generalized form and derived several identities.

The Role of Tensor-Generated Matrices in Analyzing Spin State Classicality and Tensor H-Eigenvalue Distributions

Abstract:Multipartite quantum scenarios are a significant and challenging resource in quantum information science. Tensors provide a powerful framework for representing multipartite quantum systems. In this work, we introduce the role of tensor-generated matrices that can broadly be defined as the relationships between an $m$-th order $n$-dimensional tensor and an $n$-dimensional square matrix. Through these established connections, we demonstrate that the classification of the tensor-generated matrix as an $H$-matrix implies the original tensor is also an $H$-tensor. We also explore various similar properties exhibited by both the original tensor and the tensor-generated matrix, including weak irreducibility, weakly chained diagonal dominance, and (strong) symmetry. These findings provide a method to transform intricate tensor problems into matrices in specific contexts, which is especially pertinent due to the NP-hard complexity of the majority of tensor problems. Subsequently, we explore the application of tensor-generated matrices in analyzing the classicality of spin states. Leveraging the tensor representation, we introduce classicality criteria for (strongly) symmetric spin-$j$ states, which potentially provide fresh perspectives on the study of multipartite quantum resources. Finally, we extend classical matrix eigenvalue inclusion sets to higher-order tensor $H$-eigenvalues, a task that is typically challenging for higher-order tensors. Consequently, we propose representative tensor $H$-eigenvalue inclusion sets, such as modified Brauer's Ovals of Cassini sets, Ostrowski sets, and $S$-type inclusion sets.

SO(3)-Irreducible Geometry in Complex Dimension Five and Ternary Generalization of Pauli Exclusion Principle

Abstract:We propose a notion of a ternary skew-symmetric covariant tensor of 3rd order, consider it as a 3-dimensional matrix and study a ten-dimensional complex space of these tensors. We split this space into a direct sum of two five-dimensional subspaces and in each subspace there is an irreducible representation of the rotation group SO(3) -> SO(5). We find two independent SO(3)-invariants of ternary skew-symmetric tensors, where one of them is the Hermitian metric and the other is the quadratic form. We find the stabilizer of this quadratic form and its invariant properties. Making use of these invariant properties we define a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold. We study a connection on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold with a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure, find its curvature and torsion. The structures proposed in this paper and their study are motivated by a ternary generalization of the Pauli's principle proposed by R. Kerner.

Abstract:Exceptional points of a class of non-hermitian Hamilton operators $\hat H$ of the form $\hat H=\hat H_0+i\hat H_1$ are studied, where $\hat H_0$ and $\hat H_1$ are hermitian operators. Finite dimensional Hilbert spaces are considered. The linear operators $\hat H_0$ and $\hat H_1$ are given by spin matrices for spin $s=1/2,1,3/2,\dots$. Since the linear operators studied are nonnormal, properties of such operators are described.

Maillet's property and Mahler's Conjecture on Liouville numbers fail for matrices

Abstract:In the early 1900's, Maillet proved that the image of any Liouville number under a rational function with rational coefficients is again a Liouville number. The analogous result for quadratic Liouville matrices in higher dimension turns out to fail. In fact, using a result by Kleinbock and Margulis, we show that among analytic matrix functions in dimension $n\ge 2$, Maillet's invariance property is only true for Möbius transformations with special coefficients. This implies that the analogue in higher dimension of an open question of Mahler on the existence of transcendental entire functions with Maillet's property has a negative answer. On the other hand, extending a topological argument of Erdős, we prove that for any injective continuous self mapping on the space of rectangular matrices, many Liouville matrices are mapped to Liouville matrices. Dropping injectivity, we consider setups similar to Alniaçik and Saias and show that the situation depends on the matrix dimensions $m,n$. Finally we discuss extensions of a related result by Burger to quadratic matrices. We state several open problems along the way.

Composite orthogonal projection methods for large matrix eigenproblems

Abstract:For classical orthogonal projection methods for large matrix eigenproblems, it may be much more difficult for a Ritz vector to converge than for its corresponding Ritz value when the matrix in question is non-Hermitian. To this end, a class of new refined orthogonal projection methods has been proposed. It is proved that in some sense each refined method is a composite of two classical orthogonal projections, in which each refined approximate eigenvector is obtained by realizing a new one of some Hermitian semipositive definite matrix onto the same subspace. A priori error bounds on the refined approximate eigenvector are established in terms of the sine of acute angle of the normalized eigenvector and the subspace involved. It is shown that the sufficient conditions for convergence of the refined vector and that of the Ritz value are the same, so that the refined methods may be much more efficient than the classical ones.

On Classification and Geometric Characterizations of Ensembled $2\times2$ Pseudo Hermitian and PT-Symmetric Matrices

Abstract:Non-Hermitian matrices $H\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$ satisfying the relation $ H^†G = GH $, for invertible and singular Hermitian matrices $G$ have been studied. The matrices $H$ corresponding to invertible $G$ are known in the literature as G-pseudo Hermitian matrices. We label the matrices corresponding to the singular $G_s$ as $G_s$-pseudo Hermitian. We have proved that all $ 2\times 2$ $G$-pseudo Hermitian matrices are PT-symmetric. For a given $G$ ($G_s$), all $G$ ($G_s$)-pseudo-Hermitian $H\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$ are found to be expressed as a linear variety. It is further found that for any two Hermitian $G_i,G_j\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$ such that $G_i\neq \lambda G_j$, there always exists exactly one trace less $H\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$ (up to real scaling) which is pseudo-Hermitian with respect to both these $G$ matrices. The set of all $G$- and $G_s$- pseudo-Hermitian matrices has been divided into seven distinct ensembles of matrices and the set of all PT-symmetric matrices in $M_2(\mathbb{C})$ is partitioned into four cells, denoted by $S_1,S_2,S_3$ and $S_4$. The ensembles of trace-less G-pseudo Hermitian matrices are shown to be written as a linear combination of three basis elements from these cells. When $\mathrm{Tr}(G) = 0$, one basis element is from $S_1$ and the other two are from $S_2$. On the other hand, when $\mathrm{Tr}(G)\neq0$, one basis element is from $S_1$ and the other two are from $S_4$. The determinant of such ensembles of trace-less matrices are shown to be quadrics, which could be hyperboloid of two sheets, hyperboloid of one sheet, ellipsoid or quadric cone for invertible $G$, whereas it is two parallel planes or a plane for singular $G_s$. Finally, the set of all the matrices $G\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$, satisfying $H^{\dagger}G = GH$, given a specific $H\in M_2(\mathbb{C})$, are shown to be describable in terms of quadratic variety.
