Abstract:We characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality of continuous vector-valued functions on a compact topological space. As an application of our investigation, Birkhoff-James orthogonality of real bilinear forms are studied. This allows us to present an elementary proof of the well-known Bhatia-Šemrl Theorem in the real case.

Abstract:We investigate two one-sided orthogonalities of matrices, the first of which is left (right) $*$-orthogonality for rectangular matrices and the other is left (right) core-orthogonality of index $1$ matrices. We obtain some basic results for these matrices, their canonical forms, and characterizations. Also, relations between left (right) orthogonal matrices and parallel sums are investigated. Finally under these one-sided orthogonalities we explore the conditions of additivity of the Moore-Penrose inverse and the core inverse.

Abstract:A real matrix $Q$ is quasi-orthogonal if $Q^{\top}Q=qI$, for some positive real number $q$. We prove that any $n\times n$ skew-symmetric matrix $S$ is a principal sub-matrix of a skew-symmetric quasi-orthogonal matrix $Q$, called a quasi-orthogonal extension of $S$. Moreover, we determine the least integer $d$ such that $S$ has a quasi-orthogonal extension of order $n+d$. This integer is called the quasi-orthogonality index of $S$. Lastly, we give a spectral characterization of skew-adjacency matrices of tournaments with quasi-orthogonality index at most three.

Abstract:Orthogonal matrices which are linear combinations of permutation matrices have attracted enormous attention in quantum information and computation. In this paper, we provide a complete parametric characterization of all complex, real and rational orthogonal permutative matrices of order $4.$ We show that any such matrix can always be expressed as a linear combination of up to four permutation matrices. Finally we determine several matrix spaces generated by linearly independent permutation matrices such that any orthogonal matrix in these spaces is always permutative or direct sum of orthogonal permutative matrices up to permutation of its rows and columns.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of polynomials to be orthogonal on the curves are obtained in terms of symmetric matrices. Abstract:In this paper we prove some characterizations of the matrix orthogonal polynomials whose derivatives are also orthogonal, which generalize other known ones in the scalar case. In particular, we prove that the corresponding orthogonality matrix functional is characterized by a Pearson-type equation with two matrix polynomials of degree not greater than 2 and 1. The proofs are given for a general sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, not necessarily associated with an hermitian functional. However, we give several examples of non-diagonalizable positive definite weight matrices satisfying a Pearson-type equation, which show that the previous results are non-trivial even in the positive definite case. A detailed analysis is made for the class of matrix functionals which satisfy a Pearson-type equation whose polynomial of degree not greater than 2 is scalar. We characterize the Pearson-type equations of this kind that yield a sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, and we prove that these matrix orthogonal polynomials satisfy a second order differential equation even in the non-hermitian case. Finally, we prove and improve a conjecture of Duran and Grunbaum concerning the triviality of this class in the positive definite case, while some examples show the non-triviality for hermitian functionals which are not positive definite.

Abstract:We propose a novel method for the construction of orthogonal arrays. The algorithm makes use of the Kronecker Product operator in association with unit column vectors to generate new orthogonal arrays from existing orthogonal arrays. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm lies in the fact that it works well with any linear seed orthogonal array without imposing any constraints on the strength or the number of levels. The resulting orthogonal array has the same strength as the seed orthogonal array. We also discuss the proof of correctness of the algorithm. In the Results section we provide a list of new orthogonal arrays generated using this algorithm, that are currently not present in the libraries of orthogonal arrays.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a Banach space and let $\mathbb{X}^*$ be the dual space of $\mathbb{X}.$ For $x,y \in \mathbb{X},$ $ x$ is said to be $T$-orthogonal to $y$ if $Tx(y) =0,$ where $T$ is a bounded linear operator from $\mathbb{X}$ to $\mathbb{X}^*.$ We study the notion of $T$-orthogonality in a Banach space and investigate its relation with the various geometric properties, like strict convexity, smoothness, reflexivity of the space. We explore the notions of left and right symmetric elements w.r.t. the notion of $T$-orthogonality. We characterize bounded linear operators on $\mathbb{X}$ preserving $T$-orthogonality. Finally we characterize Hilbert spaces among all Banach spaces using $T$-orthogonality. \end{abstract}

Matrix orthogonality in the plane versus scalar orthogonality in a Riemann surface

Abstract:We consider a non-Hermitian matrix orthogonality on a contour in the complex plane. Given a diagonalizable and rational matrix valued weight, we show that the Christoffel--Darboux (CD) kernel, which is built in terms of matrix orthogonal polynomials, is equivalent to a scalar valued reproducing kernel of meromorphic functions in a Riemann surface. If this Riemann surface has genus $0$, then the matrix valued CD kernel is equivalent to a scalar reproducing kernel of polynomials in the plane. Interestingly, this scalar reproducing kernel is not necessarily a scalar CD kernel. As an application of our result, we show that the correlation kernel of certain doubly periodic lozenge tiling models admits a double contour integral representation involving only a scalar CD kernel. This simplifies a formula of Duits and Kuijlaars.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of n-OU and n-OO matrix sets, a collection of n mutually-orthogonal unitary and real orthogonal matrices under Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We give a detailed characterization of order-three n-OO matrix sets under orthogonal equivalence. As an application in quantum information theory, we show that the minimum and maximum numbers of an unextendible maximally entangled bases within a real two-qutrit system are three and four, respectively. Further, we propose a new matrix decomposition approach, defining an n-OU (resp. n-OO) decomposition for a matrix as a linear combination of n matrices from an n-OU (resp. n-OO) matrix set. We show that any order-d matrix has a d-OU decomposition. As a contrast, we provide criteria for an order-three real matrix to possess an n-OO decomposition.

Here we undertake the study of similar vectors involving a generalization of the Ramanujan sums defined by Cohen (Duke Math J 16(2):85–90, 1949). Abstract:Difference arrays are used in applications such as software testing, authentication codes and data compression. Pseudo-orthogonal Latin squares are used in experimental designs. A special class of pseudo-orthogonal Latin squares are the mutually nearly orthogonal Latin squares (MNOLS) first discussed in 2002, with general constructions given in 2007. In this paper we develop row complete MNOLS from difference covering arrays. We will use this connection to settle the spectrum question for sets of 3 mutually pseudo-orthogonal Latin squares of even order, for all but the order 146.

Abstract:We investigate the local preservation of Birkhoff-James orthogonality at a point by a linear operator on a finite-dimensional Banach space and illustrate its importance in understanding the action of the operator in terms of the geometry of the concerned spaces. In particular, it is shown that such a study is related to the preservation of k-smoothness and the extremal properties of the unit ball of a Banach space. As an application of the results obtained in this direction, we obtain a refinement of the well-known Blanco-Koldobsky-Turnsek characterization of isometries on some polyhedral Banach spaces, including $ \ell_{\infty}^n, \ell_1^n. $

Abstract:Banded bounded matrices, which represent non normal operators, of oscillatory type that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization are considered. To motivate the relevance of the oscillatory character the Favard theorem for Jacobi matrices is revisited and it is shown that after an adequate shift of the Jacobi matrix one gets an oscillatory matrix. In this work we present a spectral theorem for this type of operators and show how the theory of multiple orthogonal polynomials apply.

Abstract:To study orthogonal arrays and signed orthogonal arrays, Ray-Chaudhuri and Singhi (1988 and 1994) considered some module spaces. Here, using a linear algebraic approach we define an inclusion matrix and find its rank. In the special case of Latin squares we show that there is a straightforward algorithm for generating a basis for this matrix using the so-called intercalates. We also extend this last idea.

The Generation of All Regular Rational Orthogonal Matrices

Abstract:A \emph{rational orthogonal matrix} $Q$ is an orthogonal matrix with rational entries, and $Q$ is called \emph{regular} if each of its row sum equals one, i.e., $Qe = e$ where $e$ is the all-one vector. This paper presents a method for generating all regular rational orthogonal matrices using the classic Cayley transformation. Specifically, we demonstrate that for any regular rational orthogonal matrix $Q$, there exists a permutation matrix $P$ such that $QP$ does not possess an eigenvalue of $-1$. Consequently, $Q$ can be expressed in the form $Q = (I_n + S)^{-1}(I_n - S)P$, where $I_n$ is the identity matrix of order $n$, $S$ is a rational skew-symmetric matrix satisfying $Se = 0$, and $P$ is a permutation matrix. Central to our approach is a pivotal intermediate result, which holds independent interest: given a square matrix $M$, then $MP$ has $-1$ as an eigenvalue for every permutation matrix $P$ if and only if either every row sum of $M$ is $-1$ or every column sum of $M$ is $-1$.

We obtain a complete characterization of approximate orthogonality preserving and reversing operators for a class of operators. Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to provide characterizations of Birkhoff-James orthogonality (BJ-orthogonality in short) in a number of families of Banach spaces in terms of the elements of significant subsets of the unit ball of their dual spaces, which makes the characterizations more applicable. The tool to do so is a fine study of the abstract numerical range and its relation with the BJ-orthogonality. Among other results, we provide a characterization of BJ-orthogonality for spaces of vector-valued bounded functions in terms of the domain set and the dual of the target space, which is applied to get results for spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, uniform algebras, Lipschitz maps, injective tensor products, bounded linear operators with respect to the operator norm and to the numerical radius, multilinear maps, and polynomials. Next, we study possible extensions of the well-known Bhatia-Šemrl theorem on BJ-orthogonality of matrices, showing results in spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, compact linear operators on reflexive spaces, and finite Blaschke products. Finally, we find applications of our results to the study of spear vectors and spear operators. We show that no smooth point of a Banach space can be BJ-orthogonal to a spear vector of $Z$. As a consequence, if $X$ is a Banach space containing strongly exposed points and $Y$ is a smooth Banach space with dimension at least two, then there are no spear operators from $X$ to $Y$. Particularizing this result to the identity operator, we show that a smooth Banach space containing strongly exposed points has numerical index strictly smaller than one. These latter results partially solve some open problems.
