Abstract:In this paper, ZnO with a rich variety of well-defined morphologies have been achieved by solution route using different kind of precursors, which can prepare particles by only one step without calcination. The influences of solvent, and temperature on the particle size and morphology of ZnO were investigated. It was revealed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images that the morphological feature of ZnO can be controlled as rod-, polyhedron-, fluffy sphere-, snowflake- and flower-like, etc. XRD measurement showed that all of the ZnO samples with different morphologies has the same hexagonal structure, which is well consistent with electron diffraction (ED) characterization. This communication not only provides promising candidates for materials science due to the importance of shape in relationship with materials, but also presents an effective route to synthesize the well-defined inorganic materials.

Abstract:ZnO microstructures with various morphologies have been controllably synthesized by hydrothermal route using different precipitant and zinc source in liquid solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the ZnO2, Zn(OH)2 and ZnO structures to understand the role of precipitant and precursors in the growth of various morphologies. The nucleation and growth process can regulate by changing the precipitant. When H2O2 was used as precipitant, ZnO particles with a rather uniform particle size of -500 nm and a rather rough surface was obtained. While, ZnO synthesized in this polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) solution has the same granular morphology with particle size of 300-1000 nm. In contrast, ZnO sunflower and polyhedron aggregates composed of several smaller polyhedron were formed, when ammonium hydroxide and NH4HCO3 was applied, respectively. Meanwhile, precursors play an important role in the determination of the morphology of ZnO. Sunflower and dumbbell like ZnO composed of nanosheets were obtained, when different centrifugal component of Zn(OH)2 suspension was applied as zinc source. In contrast, sunflower and dumbbell like ZnO composed of nanorods and ZnO rods were obtained, when different centrifugal components of ZnO2 suspension were used as zinc sources. The growth mechanism of ZnO nanostructures fabricated by the hydrothermal process using different zinc sources was tentatively investigated.

Abstract:Nano-sized ZnO crystals with catalytic, electrical, optoelectronic, and photochemical properties have been considered as an important candidate in both fundamental research and practical studies. However, controllable synthesis of ZnO in morphology and size with a simple method under mild conditions still represents a challenge. We proved that ZnO nanostructures, including particles and nanorods, could be fabricated by a solvothermal route. Precursors of Zn(Ac)2 and LiOH reacted in ethanol at temperatures lower than 150degC. Then zinc oxide nanocrystals with a hexagonal wurtzite structure were formed. These ZnO nanocrystals were single crystalline, as confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The size of ZnO nanoparticles was determined by reaction temperature. Prolong reaction time, ZnO nanorods were formed and they grew along the [001] direction, whose aspect ratio was also changed with reaction time

Abstract:Flower-shaped ZnO nanostructures, composed of ZnO nanorods, and sphere-shaped ZnO nanoclusters, composed of ZnO nanosheets, were synthesized by reacting zinc acetate dehydrate with sodium hydroxide and polyethylene glycol-20000 (PEG-20000) at 180 degrees C for 4 h in solution. The thickness of individual nanosheets is about 40-60 nm. The nanorods are of hexagonal shape with sharp tips, and have basic diameters of ca. 450-550 nm. The ZnO nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscropy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman scattering measurements. The results demonstrated that the synthesized products are single crystalline with wurtzite hexagonal phase, the sphere-shaped ZnO grew in the [100] direction and the flower-shaped ZnO grew in the [001] direction.
A Simple Solvothermal Route Towards the Morphological Control of ZnO and Tuning of Its Optical and Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:ZnO nanoparticles with different morphologies were solvothermally synthesized by controlling the alkali (sodium hydroxide) concentration in an isopropanol solution. The products were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectra, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. The morphologies of the formed ZnO nanocrystals were dependent on the concentration of the alkali, and with increases of sodium hydroxide concentration, the ZnO nanocrystals evolved from rod to hexagonal bipyramid, and then to a flower-like nanostructure. The flower-like nanostructure resulted from the etching of the hexagonal bipyramid by the excess alkali. The photoluminescence and photocatalytic properties of the prepared ZnO were investigated. The difference of green emission among the ZnO nanocrystals indicated that a higher sodium hydroxide concentration led to a higher level of defects. The size, the surface structure and defects in the ZnO nanocrystals affected its photo-degradation characteristics.

Abstract:The synthesis of ZnO with different morphologies (hexagonal prisms, nanosheets, microspheres and quasi-flowers) was realized through a solvothermal method. During the synthetic procedure, the decomposition of hexamethylenetetramine at the temperature ≥100°C provided (OH)−1 ions at the rate of good distribution, and sodium dodecyl sulfate was used as templates. By adjusting the basicity in the synthetic system, ZnO nanosheets, or microspheres with nanosheet assemblies were obtained. Adjusting the concentration of surfactant, ZnO hexagonal crystals were formed; by adjusting the synthetic temperature, ZnO quasi-flowers with some nanosheet assemblies were produced. Based on experimental observation and analysis, the forming mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Different morphologies of ZnO nanocrystals have been achieved controllably by agent-assisted chemical-liquid-deposition process. In this approach, no additional template materials or substrates are needed to obtain different morphologies in the reaction process. The rod-like ZnO nanocrystal has been synthesized by decomposing Zn(OH)42− directly in the solution. The slice-like and flower-like ZnO nanocrystals of hexagonal phase have also been obtained, respectively, using sodium citrate and ammonia as the structure directing agents. A very strong UV emission at ∼380nm and green emission at ∼510nm are observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the three kinds of ZnO nanocrystals. The possible formation mechanisms for synthesized ZnO nanocrystals with different morphologies have also been phenomenologically proposed.

Abstract:By employing zinc acetate and sodium hydroxide as raw materials, ultrafine ZnO powders with different morphologies were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method. The influences of the reaction temperature, the OH-/Zn2+ mol ratio and the reaction time on the morphologies of the ZnO powders were discussed. The reaction conditions were obtained, under which the ZnO of flower-like particles, micro-rods and flake particles was synthesized, respectively. The crystal structures and morphologies of those ZnO particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ZnO with flower-like structures was composed of lots of micro-rods with hexagon morphology. The XRD patterns indicated that the ZnO powders were hexagonal wurtzite structures with high purity. Finally, the growth mechanism of the ZnO particles was discussed.

Abstract:A wet-chemical route has been demonstrated to investigate the morphology evolution of high crystalline ZnO sub-micron- and micro-structures created from a zinc citrate precursor consisted of zinc citrate nanoparticles. The concentrations of precursor zinc citrate and the addition of trisodium citrate were key factors in the controlling of ZnO micro-morphology. Assembled growth resulted in the formation of ZnO sub-micron- and micro-structure with twin-cone and flower-like morphologies. The ZnO flower was consisted of cone petals. The shape of ZnO microstructures was further adjusted using trisodium citrate to created thin and thick hexagonal-plates. In the case of a high Zn concentration, thick hexagonal-plates were split into a flower-like morphology. The investigation of morphological evolution indicated that trisodium citrate is critical to control the growth rate of polar (0001) plane. The formation of a flower-like structure is ascribed to the assembly of crystal units with a high zinc citrate concentration.

Abstract:Flowerlike ZnO nano/microstructures (FZNM) have been synthesized on glass substrates by a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples are composed of many radially oriented nano/submicron rods, which are single crystalline with a hexagonal structure and grow along the [001] direction. The diameter of ZnO nano/submicron rods ranges from 20 nm to 1 microm. With prolonged reaction time, the number of the nano/submicron rods of each ZnO flowerlike will decrease, while further prolonged reaction time, the amount increase actually. The reaction time is one key factor to control the sizes of the rods and the morphology of flowerlike structures. The possible growth mechanism has been discussed and proposed. A preliminary study on photocatalytic property of as-synthesized flowerlike structure reveals that morphology and size significantly influenced the photocatalytic activity for a solution of methylene blue (MB). Moreover, it is found that the annealed product exhibited higher photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures with different morphologies were synthesized by condensing the Zn(OH)(4)(2-) precursors under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of a surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Shape and size control of ZnO nanostructures was achieved by relatively simple variations of molar ratio of CTAB to Zn(OH)(4)(2-). With a higher molar ratio, ZnO nanotubes were obtained, whereas with a lower molar ratio, ZnO nanorods were formed; furthermore, with a moderate w value, the coexistence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also observed. The photoluminescence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also investigated.

Abstract:ZnS nanostructures with different morphologies of submicrospheres, nanosheets and nanorods were synthesized by solution precipitation of thiourea with Zn(NO3)(2) in the presence of block copolymer at low temperature. The sizes and morphologies of ZnS can be controlled simply by changing the processing parameters. The results show that the ZnS submicrospheres are of 250-500 nm in diameter, nanosheets are 2.5 mu m x 5.5 mu m with an estimated thickness of 20-30 nm, and nanorods are 2-5 nm in diameter and 10-30 nm in length. Keeping the precursor system in an autoclave at 105 degrees C results in the formation of ZnS submicrospheres; ultrasonication and keeping the system at room temperature leads to the formation of ZnS nanosheets; and long-time continuous ultrasonication and keeping the system in an autoclave at 105 degrees C induces the formation of uniform ZnS nanorods. We argue that the reaction temperature and P123 may play crucial roles in the formation of three ZnS structures in this work. The morphologically controllable synthesis strategies may be extended to the shape-controlled production of nanostructures of other inorganic materials.

Abstract:Well-defined flower-like ZnO microstructures with different sizes and shapes have been successfully synthesized via a simple aqueous solution route, using zinc chloride and sodium hydroxide as the reactants, triethanolamine (TEA) as the modifying agent. The XRD pattern indicated that the obtained ZnO microcrystals were of wurtzite structure. SEM and TEM images illustrated that the flower-like ZnO bundles consisted of some prism-like or petal-like branches, which can be further characterized as single crystals in nature and preferentially growing up along [0 0 0 1] by SAED and HRTEM studies. The solution basicity has determinative effects on the morphology, size, as well as dimensionality of the obtained ZnO microcrystals by mediating the nucleation and crystal growth rate. Furthermore, the uneven adsorption of TEA on (0 0 0 1) plane of the growing ZnO crystal leads to the tapering feature of the branches, which resemble vividly the flower petals in appearance.

Abstract:The ionic liquid precursor tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAH) acting as the reactant precursor and the solvent is demonstrated to be effective for synthesis of ZnO particles with controlled morphologies: hollow ZnO rods, flower-like ZnO particles constructed by rods with nanoparticle subunits and porous ZnO microspheres assembled from ZnO nanoplates. The formation mechanism of the synthesized particles is discussed according to the experimental results. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is measured to reveal the optical property of the as-obtained products.

Abstract:In this study, we report a simple solution-phase method to prepare ZnO nanostructures with controllable morphologies. By using oleylamine (OAm) and dodecanol (DDL) as solvents, zinc oxide nanocrystals with tunable sizes and diverse shapes (hexagonal pyramids, bulletlike, and pencil-like shapes) have been obtained under mild conditions. At the same time, the introduction of presynthesized gold nanocrystals can also lead to the hybrid nanostructures of goldzinc oxide hexagonal nanopyramids. In addition, the possible formation mechanism of the as-prepared ZnO nanostructures has been investigated. Notably, the unique optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures with different sizes and shapes have also been discussed. We hope that this strategy will be a general and effective method for fabricating other metal oxide nanocrystals.

The influences of the solvent, temperature and pH value on the morphology of ZnO were investigated, and the possible growth mechanism was also afforded. This paper may present the promising method for the preparation of oxides with controlled morphologies.

Abstract:A low-temperature and effective precursor-based method has been demonstrated to synthesize nanostructured ZnO and its precursors with controllable morphology. It is found that the morphology of ZnO precursors has a strong dependence on the reaction conditions that include the molar ratio of reagents, solvent, and reaction temperature. Ethylene glycol used as an organic capping reagent is the key to determine the two-dimensional petal-like ZnO nanostructure. The structures and properties of the obtained-samples are characterized by a scanning electron microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, and an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. The present technique is an easy and cheap method to synthesize nanoscale photonic and electronic materials.

Abstract:In this paper, ZnO particles with various morphologies were prepared though a facile solution-based route. The complexes Zn–EG–AC (EG: ethylene glycol; AC: CH3COO− groups) obtained by reaction of anhydrous zinc acetate and EG were used as precursors. It is found that the precursor could transform into ZnO in water with no need of assistant of additional alkali as it is sensitive to water. At the same time, it is well dispersed in reaction medium (water and ethanol). Experimental results showed that ZnO particles with various morphologies, such as the hexagonal rings, the hexagonal plates, the tubes, the prisms, and some interesting hierarchical structures, could be obtained by controlling hydrolysis of precursor in water and water/ethanol medium through finely tuning the experimental parameters. The success of shape-controllable fabrication was related intimately with the Zn–EG–AC precursor used in our synthesis.

Abstract:Flower-like ZnO nanostructures assembled by nanorods with bimodal size distribution have been synthesized by a solvothermal process in NaOH-Et system. Various effects of the solvothermal parameters and assistant additives on the morphologies of ZnO nanostructures have been investigated. The directing effect of chloride ions have been observed in the formation of highly symmetrical 3D ZnO nanostructures. A possible mechanism has been proposed to explain the formation of ZnO nanoflowers in NaOH-Et system. A strong near-UV emission band centered at around 396nm is observed in the photoluminescence spectrum of flower-like ZnO nanostructures, indicating of their high crystal quality.

Abstract:The morphology of ZnO submicron crystals formed in a weak alkaline environment (pH value less than 11.0) was systematically studied for the first time. ZnO submicron particles with different morphologies (flowers, rod, and wire) were synthesized from an aqueous solution by adopting ethylenediamine as the source of hydroxyl group, hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) as the additive, and potassium chloride (KCl) as the background electrolyte. The effects of primary experimental parameters such as HMT and KCl addition, precursor concentration, and reaction temperature on the microstructure, crystallinity of the resultant particles, and their distribution on substrate are discussed in this paper. In the flowerlike structure, the particle size is more controlled by the precursor concentration, and the microstructure is modulated by increasing the concentration of HMT and the reaction temperature. The introduction of ZnO seed layer on substrate promotes even distribution of ZnO flowers. High concentration KCl electrolyte inhibits formation of the flowerlike structure and promotes the growth of submicron ZnO crystals in rod or wire shape. Mechanism studies indicate that the degree of supersaturation of Zn(OH)2 and the adsorption of organic/inorganic species on the surface of ZnO are the prime factors influencing the nucleation, growth rate, and eventual morphology.
