Abstract:Given a field with a set of discrete valuations $V$, we show how the genus of a division algebra over the field is related to the genus of the residue algebras at various valuations in $V$ and the ramification data. When the division algebra is a quaternion, we show the triviality of genus over many fields which include higher local fields, function fields of curves over higher local fields and function fields of curves over real closed fields. We also consider function fields of curves over global fields with a rational point and show how the genus problem is related to the $2$-torsion of the Tate-Shafarevich group of its Jacobian. As a special case, we show how the methods developed yield better bounds on the size of the genus over function fields of elliptic curves and demonstrate how they can be computed directly using arithmetic data of the elliptic curve with a number of examples.

Division quaternion algebras over some cyclotomic fields

Abstract:Let $p_{1}, p_{2}$ be two distinct prime integers, let $n$ be a positive integer, $n$$\geq 3$ and let $\xi_{n} $ be a primitive root of order $n$ of the unity. In this paper we obtain a complete characterization for a quaternion algebra $H\left(p_{1}, p_{2}\right)$ to be a division algebra over the $n$th cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}\left(\xi_{n}\right)$, when $n$$\in$$\left\{3,4,6,7,8,9,11,12\right\}$ and also we obtain a characterization for a quaternion algebra $H\left(p_{1}, p_{2}\right)$ to be a division algebra over the $n$th cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}\left(\xi_{n}\right)$, when $n$$\in$$\left\{5,10\right\}$. In the 4th section we obtain a complete characterization for a quaternion algebra $H_{\mathbb{Q}\left(\xi_{n}\right)}\left(p_{1}, p_{2}\right)$ to be a division algebra, when $n=l^{k},$ with $l$ a prime integer, $l\equiv 3$ (mod $4$) and $k$ a positive integer. In the last section of this article we obtain a complete characterization for a quaternion algebra $H_{\mathbb{Q}\left(\xi_{l}\right)}\left(p_{1}, p_{2}\right)$ to be a division algebra, when $l$ is a Fermat prime number.

Abstract:Given a totally real algebraic number field k of degree s , we consider locally symmetric spaces X G / őď associated with arithmetic subgroups őď of the special linear algebraic k -group G = SL M 2 ‚ĀĘ ( D ) , attached to a quaternion division k -algebra D . The group G is k -simple, of k -rank one, and non-split over k . Using reduction theory, one can construct an open subset Y őď ‚äā X G / őď such that its closure Y ¬Į őď is a compact manifold with boundary ‚ąā ‚Ā° Y ¬Į őď , and the inclusion Y ¬Į őď ‚Üí X G / őď is a homotopy equivalence. The connected components Y [ P ] of the boundary ‚ąā ‚Ā° Y ¬Į őď are in one-to-one correspondence with the finite set of őď-conjugacy classes of minimal parabolic k -subgroups of G . We show that each boundary component carries the natural structure of a torus bundle. Firstly, if the quaternion division k -algebra D is totally definite, that is, D ramifies at all archimedean places of k , we prove that the basis of this bundle is homeomorphic to the torus T s - 1 of dimension s - 1 , has the compact fibre T 4 ‚ĀĘ s , and its structure group is SL 4 ‚ĀĘ s ‚ĀĘ ( ‚Ą§ ) . We determine the cohomology of Y [ P ] . Secondly, if the quaternion division k -algebra D is indefinite, thus, there exists at least one archimedean place v ‚ąą V k , ‚ąě at which D v splits over ‚ĄĚ , that is, D v ‚ČÖ M 2 ‚ĀĘ ( ‚ĄĚ ) , the fibre is homeomorphic to T 4 ‚ĀĘ s , but the base space of the bundle is more complicated.

Using these modules, we present an inductive method for studying finite generation properties of algebras and modules. In the context of the minimal model program, we show that finite generation of log canonical algebras and modules is equivalent to the minimal model and abundance conjectures.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a division ring and let $G$ be either a torsion-free virtually compact special group or a torsion-free $3$-manifold group. We embed the group algebra $kG$ in a division ring and prove that the embedding is Hughes-free whenever $G$ is locally indicable. In particular, we prove that Kaplansky's zerodivisor conjecture holds for all group algebras of torsion-free $3$-manifold groups. The embedding is also used to confirm a conjecture of Kielak and Linton. Thanks to the work of Jaikin-Zapirain, another consequence of the embedding is that $kG$ is coherent whenever $G$ is a virtually compact special one-relator group. If $G$ is a torsion-free one-relator group, let $\overline{kG}$ be the division ring containing $kG$ constructed by Lewin and Lewin. We prove that $\overline{kG}$ is Hughes-free whenever a Hughes-free $kG$-division ring exists. This is always the case when $k$ is of characteristic zero; in positive characteristic, our previous result implies this happens when $G$ is virtually compact special.

Abstract:When k is a field, the classical Jacobian criterion computes the singular locus of an equidimensional, finitely generated k ‐algebra as the closed subset of an ideal generated by appropriate minors of the so‐called Jacobian matrix. Recently, Hochster‐Jeffries and Saito have extended this result for algebras over any unramified discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic via the use of p ‐derivations. Motivated by these results, in this paper, we state and prove an analogous Jacobian criterion for algebras over ramified discrete valuation rings of mixed characteristic.

Vertex algebras from divisors on Calabi-Yau threefolds

Abstract:We construct vertex algebras $\mathbb{V}(Y,S)$ from divisors $S$ on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds $Y$, satisfying conjectures of Gaiotto-Rapcak and Feigin-Gukov, as the kernel of screening operators on lattice vertex algebras determined by the GKM graph of $Y$ and a filtration on $\mathcal{O}_S$. We prove that there are representations of $\mathbb{V}(Y,S)$ on the homology groups of various moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on $Y$ supported on $S$ constructed in a companion paper with Rapcak, defined by certain Hecke modifications of these sheaves along points and curve classes in the divisor $S$. This generalizes the common mathematical formulation of a conjecture of Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa, the special case in which $Y=\mathbb{C}^3$ and $S=r[\mathbb{C}^2]$, to toric threefolds and divisors as proposed by Gaiotto-Rapcak. We outline an approach to the general conjecture and prove many special cases and partial results using tools developed in the companion paper, following the proof of the original conjecture by Schiffmann-Vasserot and its generalization to divisors in $\mathbb{C}^3$ by Rapcak-Soibelman-Yang-Zhao. The vertex algebras $\mathbb{V}(Y,S)$ conjecturally include $W$-superalgebras $ W_{f_0,f_1}^\kappa(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n})$ and genus zero class $\mathcal{S}$ chiral algebras $\mathbb{V}^{\mathcal{S}}_{\text{Gl}_m;f_1,...,f_k}$, each for general nilpotents $f_i$. By definition, this implies the existence of a family of compatible free field realizations of these vertex algebras, relevant to their parabolic induction and inverse quantum Hamiltonian reduction. We prove these conjectures in the examples of lowest non-trivial rank for each case, and outline the proof in general for some cases.

Abstract:Given a field F F , an étale extension L / F L/F and an Azumaya algebra A / L A/L , one knows that there are extensions E / F E/F such that A ⊗ F E A \otimes _F E is a split algebra over L ⊗ F E L \otimes _F E . In this paper we bound the degree of a minimal splitting field of this type from above and show that our bound is sharp in certain situations, even in the case where L / F L/F is a split extension. This gives in particular a number of generalizations of the classical fact that when the tensor product of two quaternion algebras is not a division algebra, the two quaternion algebras must share a common quadratic splitting field. In another direction, our constructions combined with results of Karpenko (1995) also show that for any odd prime number p p , the generic algebra of index p n p^n and exponent p p cannot be expressed nontrivially as the corestriction of an algebra over any extension field if n > p 2 n > p^2 .

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:We prove that the quotients of the group algebra of the braid group introduced by L. Funar in Comm. Math. Phys., 1995, collapses in characteristic distinct from 2. In characteristic 2 we define several quotients of it, which are connected to the classical Hecke and Birman-Wenzl-Murakami quotients, but which admit in addition a symmetry of order 3. We also establish conditions on the possible Markov traces factorizing through it.

Abstract:Frobenius' Theorem states that, besides the fields of real and complex numbers, the algebra of quaternions <math>H</math> is the only finite-dimensional real division algebra. We first give a short elementary proof of this theorem, then characterize finite-dimensional real algebras that contain either a copy of <math>C</math>, a copy of <math>H</math>, or a pair of anticommuting invertible elements through the dimensions of their (left) ideals, and finally consider the problem of lifting algebraic elements modulo ideals.

Separating semigroup of genus 4 curves

Abstract:A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\mathbb R C\to\mathbb{RP}^1$. Let $c_1,\dots,c_r$ be connected components of $\mathbb R C$. M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_r(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $c_i$. In the present paper we describe the separating semigroups of all genus 4 curves. For the proofs we consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into a quadric $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and apply Abel's theorem to 1-forms obtained as Poincaré residues at $C$ of certain meromorphic 2-forms on $X$.
