Abstract:Because global topological properties are robust against local perturbations, understanding and manipulating the topological properties of physical systems is essential in advancing quantum science and technology. For quantum computation, topologically protected qubit operations can increase computational robustness, and for metrology the quantized Hall effect directly defines the von Klitzing constant. Fundamentally, topological order is generated by singularities called topological defects in extended spaces, and is quantified in terms of Chern numbers, each of which measures different sorts of fields traversing surfaces enclosing these topological singularities. Here, inspired by high energy theories, we describe our synthesis and characterization of a singularity present in non-Abelian gauge theories - a Yang monopole - using atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a five-dimensional space, and quantify the monopole in terms of Chern numbers measured on enclosing manifolds. While the well-known 1st Chern number vanished, the 2nd Chern number, measured for the first time in any physical settings, did not. By displacing the manifold, we then observed a phase transition from "topological" to "trivial" as the monopole left the manifold.

Abstract:Monopoles are intriguing topological objects, which play a central role in gauge theories and topological states of matter. While conventional monopoles are found in odd-dimensional flat spaces, such as the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and the non-Abelian Yang monopole in five dimensions, more exotic objects were predicted to exist in even dimensions. This is the case of "tensor monopoles", which are associated with generalized (tensor) gauge fields, and which can be defined in four dimensional flat spaces. In this work, we investigate the possibility of creating and measuring such a tensor monopole, by introducing a realistic three-band model defined over a four-dimensional parameter space. Our probing method is based on the observation that the topological charge of this tensor monopole, which we relate to a generalized Berry curvature, can be directly extracted from the quantum metric. We propose a realistic three-level atomic system, where tensor monopoles could be generated and revealed through quantum-metric measurements.

Abstract:Anyons are particles obeying statistics of neither bosons nor fermions. Non-Abelian anyons, whose exchanges are described by a non-Abelian group acting on a set of wave functions, are attracting a great attention because of possible applications to topological quantum computations. Braiding of non-Abelian anyons corresponds to quantum computations. The simplest non-Abelian anyons are Ising anyons which can be realized by Majorana fermions hosted by vortices or edges of topological superconductors, $\nu =5/2$ quantum Hall states, spin liquids, and dense quark matter. While Ising anyons are insufficient for universal quantum computations, Fibonacci anyons present in $\nu =12/5$ quantum Hall states can be used for universal quantum computations. Yang-Lee anyons are non-unitary counterparts of Fibonacci anyons. Another possibility of non-Abelian anyons (of bosonic origin) is given by vortex anyons, which are constructed from non-Abelian vortices supported by a non-Abelian first homotopy group, relevant for certain nematic liquid crystals, superfluid $^3$He, spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, and high density quark matter. Finally, there is a unique system admitting two types of non-Abelian anyons, Majorana fermions (Ising anyons) and non-Abelian vortex anyons. That is $^3P_2$ superfluids (spin-triplet, $p$-wave paring of neutrons), expected to exist in neutron star interiors as the largest topological quantum matter in our universe.

Monopoles, Scattering, and Generalized Symmetries

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Abstract:Magnetic monopoles form an inspiring chapter of theoretical physics, covering a variety of surprising subjects. We review their role in non-abelian gauge theories. An expose of quite exquisite physics derived from a hypothetical particle species, because the fact remains that in spite of ever more tempting arguments from theory, monopoles have never reared their head in experiment. For many relevant particulars, references to the original literature are provided.

Photonic Non-Abelian Braid Monopole

Abstract:Monopoles and braids are exotic but elusive aspects of fundamental theories of light and matter. In lattice systems, monopoles of band-structure degeneracies are subject to well-established no-go (doubling) theorems that appear to universally apply in closed Hermitian systems and open non-Hermitian systems alike. However, the non-Abelian braid topology of non-Hermitian multi-band systems provides a remarkable loophole to these constraints. Here we make use of this loophole, and experimentally implement, for the first time, a monopole degeneracy in a non-Hermitian three-band system in the form of a single third-order exceptional point. We explicitly demonstrate the intricate braiding topology and the non-Abelian fusion rules underlying the monopole degeneracy. The experiment is carried out using a new design of single-photon interferometry, enabling eigenstate and spectral resolutions for non-Hermitian multi-band systems with widely tunable parameters. Thus, the union of state-of-the-art experiments, fundamental theory, and everyday concepts such as braids paves the way toward the highly exotic non-Abelian topology unique to non-Hermitian settings.

Abstract:The presence of magnetic monopole like excitations of nonabelian varieties is one of the subtlest consequences of spontaneously broken gauge symmetries. Important hints about their quantum mechanical properties, which remained long mysterious, are coming from a detailed knowledge of the dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories which has become available recently. These developments might shed light on the problem of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in QCD. We discuss here some beautiful features of vortex-monopole systems, in which dual nonabelian transformations among monopoles are generated by the nonabelian vortex moduli.

Topology-Induced Symmetry Breaking for Vortex with Artificial Monopole

Abstract:We construct an artificial U(1) gauge field in the cold atom system to form a monopole along with vortices. It is supposed that the cold atoms are confined on a spherical surface, and two sets of identical laser beams in the opposite propagating directions shine on two sides of the sphere. Arbitrary Chern number CN, proportional to the quantized magnetic flux, can be obtained by selecting proper laser modes. This construction meets the condition of Chernu0027s theorem, so that the vortices of the atom wave function will emerge on the sphere, whose winding number equals CN. It is found that a geometric symmetry is broken spontaneously for odd CN, which corresponds to a topology-induced quantum phase transition. In particular for CN=1, the ground state of the cold atoms are double-degenerate and can be applied to make a stable qubit. Since the ground-state degeneracy is protected by topology-induced symmetry breaking against dissipation, the proposed topological structure has vast potential in quantum storage.

Abstract:In 1937, Majorana noticed that in a different representation the relativistic wave equation for electrons proposed by Dirac has a solution describing chargeless neutral fermi-ons, which have completely different properties from Dirac fermions. In particle physics, the search for such Majorana fermions is still being pursued, while in condensed matter physics it has already been found that certain kinds of quasiparticles in the low-energy excitations of topological superconductors and fractional quantum Hall effects share a similar behavior to Majorana fermi-ons. In particular, the vortex excitations in two-dimensional topological superconductors include zero-energy Majorana fermion modes, which exhibit non-abelian anyonic statistical properties un-der exchange operations, leading to the possibility of topological quantum computation. In this ar-ticle we will review the physical models and realization of Majorana fermions, and then discuss the corresponding implementation of topological quantum computation.

Abstract:The interplay between unitary dynamics and quantum measurements induces a variety of open quantum phenomena that have no counterparts in closed quantum systems at equilibrium. Here, we generally classify Kraus operators and their effective non-Hermitian dynamical generators within the 38-fold way, thereby establishing the tenfold classification for symmetry and topology of monitored free fermions. Our classification elucidates the role of topology in measurement-induced phase transitions and identifies potential topological terms in the corresponding nonlinear sigma models. Furthermore, we demonstrate that nontrivial topology in spacetime manifests itself as anomalous boundary states in Lyapunov spectra, such as Lyapunov zero modes and chiral edge modes, constituting the bulk-boundary correspondence in monitored quantum dynamics.

Abstract:Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and Yang monopole in five dimensions, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuits. The energy structure of a 4D Weyl-like Hamiltonian with threefold degenerate points acting as tensor monopoles is imaged. Through quantum-metric measurements, we report the first experiment that measures the Dixmier-Douady invariant, the topological charge of the tensor monopole. Moreover, we observe topological phase transitions characterized by the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant, rather than the Chern numbers as used for conventional monopoles in odd-dimensional spaces.

Abstract:Topological quantum computation has emerged as one of the most exciting approaches to constructing a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The proposal relies on the existence of topological states of matter whose quasiparticle excitations are neither bosons nor fermions, but are particles known as non-Abelian anyons, meaning that they obey non-Abelian braiding statistics. Quantum information is stored in states with multiple quasiparticles, which have a topological degeneracy. The unitary gate operations that are necessary for quantum computation are carried out by braiding quasiparticles and then measuring the multiquasiparticle states. The fault tolerance of a topological quantum computer arises from the nonlocal encoding of the quasiparticle states, which makes them immune to errors caused by local perturbations. To date, the only such topological states thought to have been found in nature are fractional quantum Hall states, most prominently the ν=5∕2 state, although several other prospective candidates have been proposed in systems as disparate as ultracold atoms in optical lattices and thin-film superconductors. In this review article, current research in this field is described, focusing on the general theoretical concepts of non-Abelian statistics as it relates to topological quantum computation, on understanding non-Abelian quantum Hall states, on proposed experiments to detect non-Abelian anyons, and on proposed architectures for a topological quantum computer. Both the mathematical underpinnings of topological quantum computation and the physics of the subject are addressed, using the ν=5∕2 fractional quantum Hall state as the archetype of a non-Abelian topological state enabling fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Vortices and Other Topological Solitons in Dense Quark Matter

Abstract:In this review, we discuss various properties of topological solitons in dense QCD matter, with a particular emphasis on the CFL phase exhibiting superfluidity and superconductivity, and their phenomenological implications in terms of the effective field theories such as the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the chiral Lagrangian, or the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. The most fundamental topological excitations are non-Abelian vortices, which are 1/3 quantized superfluid vortices and color magnetic flux tubes. They are created at a phase transition or a rotation such compact stars. The intervortex-interaction is repulsive and consequently a vortex lattice is formed. Bosonic and fermionic zero-energy modes are trapped in the vortex core and propagate along it as gapless excitations. The former consists of translational zero modes (a Kelvin mode) with a quadratic dispersion and CP(2) Nambu-Goldstone gapless modes with a linear dispersion, while the latter is the triplet Majorana fermion zero modes. The low-energy effective theory of the bosonic zero modes is a non-relativistic free complex scalar field and a CP(2) model in 1+1 dimensions. The effects of strange quark mass, electromagnetic interactions and non-perturbative quantum corrections are taken into account. Colorful boojums at the CFL interface, quantum color magnetic monopole confined by vortices, which supports the notion of quark-hadron duality, and Yang-Mills instantons inside a vortex as lumps are discussed. The interactions between a vortex and quasi-particles such as phonons, gluons, mesons, and photons are studied. A vortex lattice is shown to behave as a cosmic polarizer. Non-Abelian vortices are shown to behave as a novel kind of non-Abelian anyons. For the chiral symmetry breaking, we discuss fractional and integer axial domain walls, Abelian and non-Abelian axial vortices, axial wall-vortex composites, and Skyrmions.

Quantum double structure in cold atom superfluids

Abstract:The theory of topological quantum computation is underpinned by two important classes of models. One is based on non-abelian Chern-Simons theory, which yields the so-called $\rm{SU}(2)_k$ anyon models that often appear in the context of electrically charged quantum fluids. The physics of the other is captured by symmetry broken Yang-Mills theory in the absence of a Chern-Simons term, and results in the so-called quantum double models. Extensive resources have been invested into the search for $\rm{SU}(2)_k$ anyon quasi-particles; in particular the so-called Ising anyons ($k=2$) of which Majorana zero modes are believed to be an incarnation. In contrast to the $\rm{SU}(2)_k$ models, quantum doubles have attracted little attention in experiments despite their pivotal role in the theory of error correction. Beyond topological error correcting codes, the appearance of quantum doubles has been limited to contexts primarily within mathematical physics, and as such, they are of seemingly little relevance for the study of experimentally tangible systems. However, recent works suggest that quantum double anyons may be found in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. In light of this, the core purpose of this article is to provide a self-contained exposition of the quantum double structure, framed in the context of spinor condensates, by constructing explicitly the quantum doubles for various ground state symmetry groups and discuss their experimental realisability. We also derive analytically an equation for the quantum double Clebsch-Gordan coefficients from which the relevant braid matrices can be worked out. Finally, the existence of a particle-vortex duality is exposed and illuminated upon in this context.

Abstract:The scattering is studied using moduli space metric for well-separated vortices of non-Abelian vortices in (2+1)-dimensional U(N) gauge theories with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Unlike vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model, dynamics of non-Abelian vortices has a lot of new features; The kinetic energy in real space can be transfered to that of internal orientational moduli and vice versa, the energy and charge transfer between two vortices, the scattering angle of collisions with a fixed impact parameter depends on the internal orientations, and some resonances appear due to synchronization of the orientations. Scattering of dyonic non-Abelian vortices in a mass deformed theory is also studied. We find a bound state of two vortices moving along coils around a circle, like a loop of a phone code.

Abstract:A relation between the total instanton number and the quantum-numbers of magnetic monopoles that arise in general Abelian gauges in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is established. The instanton number is expressed as the sum of the `twists' of all monopoles, where the twist is related to a generalized Hopf invariant. The origin of a stronger relation between instantons and monopoles in the Polyakov gauge is discussed.

Anomalous continuous symmetries and quantum topology of Goldstone modes

Abstract:We consider systems in which a continuous symmetry $G$, which may be anomalous, is spontaneously broken to an anomaly-free subgroup $H$ such that the effective action for the Goldstone modes contains topologically non-trivial terms. If the original system has trivial $G$ anomaly, it is known that the possible topological terms are fully determined by SPT or SET invariants of the residual $H$ symmetry. Here we address the more general setting in which the $G$ symmetry has an anomaly. We argue that in general, the appropriate concept to consider is the "compatibility relation" between the Goldstone invariants and the $G$ anomaly. In the case where the Goldstone modes can be gapped out to obtain invertible families (i.e. without any topological order), we give an explicit mathematical scheme to construct the desired compatibility relation. We also address the case where gapping out the Goldstone modes leads to a family of topologically ordered states. We discuss several examples including the canonical Thouless pump, the quantum Hall ferromagnet, pumps arising from breaking $\text{U}(1)$ symmetry at the boundary of topological insulators in two and three dimensions, and pumps classified by the higher Chern number.
