Abstract:Let ${\frak M}^\alpha$ be the spherical maximal operators of complex order $\alpha$ on ${\mathbb R^n}$. In this article we show that when $n\geq 2$, suppose \begin{eqnarray*} \|{\frak M}^{\alpha} f \|_{L^p({\mathbb R^n})} \leq C\|f \|_{L^p({\mathbb R^n})} \end{eqnarray*} holds for some $\alpha$ and $p\geq 2$, then we must have ${\rm Re}\,\alpha \geq \max \{1/p-(n-1)/2,\ -(n-1)/p \}.$ When $n=2$, we prove that $\|{\frak M}^{\alpha} f \|_{L^p({\mathbb R^2})} \leq C\|f \|_{L^p({\mathbb R^2})}$ if ${\rm Re}\ \ \alpha>\max\{1/p-1/2,\ -1/p\}$, and hence the range of $\alpha$ is sharp in the sense the estimate fails for ${\rm Re}\ \alpha <\max\{1/p-1/2, -1/ p\}.$

Abstract:In this article we investigate $L^p$ boundedness of the spherical maximal operator $\mathfrak{m}^\alpha$ of (complex) order $\alpha$ on the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, which was introduced and studied by Kohen [13]. We prove that when $n\geq 2$, for $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $1<p<\infty$, if \begin{eqnarray*} \|\mathfrak{m}^\alpha(f)\|_{L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)}\leq C\|f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)}, \end{eqnarray*} then we must have $\alpha>1-n+n/p$ for $1<p\leq 2$; or $\alpha\geq \max\{1/p-(n-1)/2,(1-n)/p\}$ for $2<p<\infty$. Furthermore, we improve the result of Kohen [13, Theorem 3] by showing that $\mathfrak{m}^\alpha$ is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)$ provided that $\mathop{\mathrm{Re}} \alpha> \max \{{(2-n)/p}-{1/(p p_n)}, \ {(2-n)/p} - (p-2)/ [p p_n(p_n-2) ] \} $ for $2\leq p\leq \infty$, with $p_n=2(n+1)/(n-1)$ for $n\geq 3$ and $p_n=4$ for $n=2$.

Abstract:We use the Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators to obtain bounds for spherical maximal functions in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, $n\geq2$, where the radii of the spheres are restricted to a compact subset of $(0,\infty)$. These bounds extend to general hypersurfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, to the complex spherical means, and to geodesic spheres on compact manifolds. We also obtain improved maximal function bounds and pointwise convergence statements for wave equations, both on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and on compact manifolds. The maximal function bounds are essentially sharp for all $p\in[1,2]\cup [\frac{2(n+1)}{n-1},\infty]$, for each such hypersurface, every complex spherical mean, and on every manifold.

Abstract:Weighted inequality on the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function is completely understood while it is not well understood for the spherical maximal function. For the power weight $|x|^{\alpha}$, it is known that the spherical maximal operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is bounded on $L^p(|x|^{\alpha})$ only if $1-d\leq \alpha<(d-1)(p-1)-d$ and under this condition, it is known to be bounded except $\alpha=1-d$. In this paper, we prove the case of the critical order, $\alpha=1-d$.

Abstract:We prove $L^p\times L^q\rightarrow L^r$ bounds for certain lacunary bilinear maximal averaging operators with parameters satisfying the Hölder relation $1/p+1/q=1/r$. The boundedness region that we get contains at least the interior of the Hölder boundedness region of the associated single scale bilinear averaging operator. In the case of the lacunary bilinear spherical maximal function in $d\geq 2$, we prove boundedness for any $p,q\in (1,\infty]^2$, which is sharp up to boundary; we then show how to extend this result to a more degenerate family of surfaces where some curvatures are allowed to vanish. For the lacunary triangle averaging maximal operator, we have results in $d\geq 7$, and the description of the sharp region will depend on a sharp description of the Hölder bounds for the single scale triangle averaging operator, which is still open.

Abstract:In this article, we study maximal functions related to hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Firstly, we characterize the $L^p\rightarrow L^q$ boundedness of local maximal operators along homogeneous hypersurfaces. Moreover, weighted $L^p$-estimates are obtained for the corresponding global operators. Secondly, for a class of hypersurfaces that lack a homogeneous structure and pass through the origin, we attempt to look for other geometric properties instead of height of hypersurfaces to characterize the optimal $L^p$-boundedness of the corresponding global maximal operators.

Abstract:We study spherical analogues of Nikodym sets and related maximal functions. In particular, we prove sharp $L^p$-estimates for Nikodym maximal functions associated with spheres. As a corollary, any Nikodym set for spheres must have full Hausdorff dimension. In addition, we consider a class of maximal functions which contains the spherical maximal function as a special case. We show that $L^p$-estimates for these maximal functions can be deduced from local smoothing estimates for the wave equation relative to fractal measures.

Abstract:For a given set of dilations $E\subset [1,2]$, Lebesgue space mapping properties of the spherical maximal operator with dilations restricted to $E$ are studied when acting on radial functions. In higher dimensions, the type set only depends on the upper Minkowski dimension of $E$, and in this case complete endpoint results are obtained. In two dimensions we determine the closure of the $L^p\to L^q$ type set for every given set $E$ in terms of a dimensional spectrum closely related to the upper Assouad spectrum of $E$.

Abstract:We give some characterizations of the boundedness of the maximal or nonlinear commutators of the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function and sharp maximal function in variable exponent Lebesgue spaces when the symbols b belong to the Lipschitz spaces, by which some new characterizations of Lipschitz spaces and nonnegative Lipschitz functions are obtained. Some equivalent relations between the Lipschitz norm and the variable exponent Lebesgue norm are also given.
Bounds of restriction of characters to submanifolds

Abstract:To investigate concentration of Laplacian eigenfunctions on a compact manifold as the eigenvalue grows to infinity, an important route is to bound their restriction to submanifolds. In this paper we take the route in the setting of a compact Lie group, and provide sharp restriction bounds of general Laplacian eigenfunctions as well as important special ones such as matrix coefficients and in particular characters of irreducible representations of the group. We focus on two classes of submanifolds, namely, submanifolds of maximal flats and the conjugation-invariant submanifolds. We prove conjecturally sharp asymptotic $L^p$ bounds of restriction of general Laplacian eigenfunctions to submanifolds of maximal flats for all $p\geq 2$. We also prove sharp asymptotic $L^p$ bounds of restriction of characters to submanifolds of maximal tori for all $p>0$, of general matrix coefficients to submanifolds of maximal flats for all $p\geq 2$, and of characters to the conjugation-invariant submanifolds for all $p\geq 2$.

We show that the estimates for such operators in dimensions $d\geq2$ essentially relies on the method of slicing. The bounds for the lacunary maximal function in dimension one is more delicate and requires a trilinear smoothing inequality which is based on an appropriate sublevel set estimate in this context.
