Abstract:Given a function f > 0 on the unit sphere n +1 , the Minkowski problem in the sphere concerns the existence of convex hypersurfaces M subset of(n +1) such that the Gauss curvature of M at z is equal to f (v( z )), where v(z) is the unit outer normal of M at z . We use the min-max principle and the Gauss curvature flow to prove that there are at least two solutions to the problem. By using the rotating plane method in the sphere, we also show the existence of a rotationally symmetric and monotone function f such that there are exactly two solutions.

Abstract:We obtain boundedness for the bilinear spherical maximal function in a range of exponents that includes the Banach triangle and a range of $L^p$ with $p<1$. We also obtain counterexamples that are asymptotically optimal with our positive results on certain indices as the dimension tends to infinity.

Abstract:In this article we investigate $L^p$ boundedness of the spherical maximal operator $\mathfrak{m}^\alpha$ of (complex) order $\alpha$ on the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, which was introduced and studied by Kohen [13]. We prove that when $n\geq 2$, for $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $1<p<\infty$, if \begin{eqnarray*} \|\mathfrak{m}^\alpha(f)\|_{L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)}\leq C\|f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)}, \end{eqnarray*} then we must have $\alpha>1-n+n/p$ for $1<p\leq 2$; or $\alpha\geq \max\{1/p-(n-1)/2,(1-n)/p\}$ for $2<p<\infty$. Furthermore, we improve the result of Kohen [13, Theorem 3] by showing that $\mathfrak{m}^\alpha$ is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{H}^n)$ provided that $\mathop{\mathrm{Re}} \alpha> \max \{{(2-n)/p}-{1/(p p_n)}, \ {(2-n)/p} - (p-2)/ [p p_n(p_n-2) ] \} $ for $2\leq p\leq \infty$, with $p_n=2(n+1)/(n-1)$ for $n\geq 3$ and $p_n=4$ for $n=2$.

Abstract:We use the Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators to obtain bounds for spherical maximal functions in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, $n\geq2$, where the radii of the spheres are restricted to a compact subset of $(0,\infty)$. These bounds extend to general hypersurfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, to the complex spherical means, and to geodesic spheres on compact manifolds. We also obtain improved maximal function bounds and pointwise convergence statements for wave equations, both on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and on compact manifolds. The maximal function bounds are essentially sharp for all $p\in[1,2]\cup [\frac{2(n+1)}{n-1},\infty]$, for each such hypersurface, every complex spherical mean, and on every manifold.

Spherical maximal functions on two step nilpotent Lie groups

Abstract:Consider $\mathbb R^d\times \mathbb R^m$ with the group structure of a two-step nilpotent Lie group and natural parabolic dilations. The maximal function originally introduced by Nevo and Thangavelu in the setting of the Heisenberg group deals with noncommutative convolutions associated to measures on spheres or generalized spheres in $\mathbb R^d$. We drop the nondegeneracy condition in the known results on Métivier groups and prove the sharp $L^p$ boundedness result for all two step nilpotent Lie groups with $d\ge 3$.

Abstract:We observe that classical arguments of Ricci--Stein can be used to prove $L^p$ bounds for maximal functions associated to lacunary dilates of a fixed measure in the setting of homogenous groups. This recovers some recent results on averages over Korányi spheres and horizontal spherical averages of a type introduced by Nevo--Thangavelu. Moreover, the main theorem applies much more broadly and we explore its consequences through a variety of explicit examples.

Abstract:We study spherical analogues of Nikodym sets and related maximal functions. In particular, we prove sharp $L^p$-estimates for Nikodym maximal functions associated with spheres. As a corollary, any Nikodym set for spheres must have full Hausdorff dimension. In addition, we consider a class of maximal functions which contains the spherical maximal function as a special case. We show that $L^p$-estimates for these maximal functions can be deduced from local smoothing estimates for the wave equation relative to fractal measures.

Abstract:In this work, we establish $L^{p_1}\times \cdots\times L^{p_1}\to L^p$ bounds for maximal multi-(sub)linear singular integrals associated with homogeneous kernels $\frac{\Omega(\vec{\boldsymbol{y}}')}{|\vec{\boldsymbol{y}}|^{mn}}$ where $\Omega$ is an $L^q$ function on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{mn-1}$ with vanishing moment condition and $q>1$. As an application, we obtain almost everywhere convergence results for the associated doubly truncated multilinear singular integrals.

Abstract:In this article, we study maximal functions related to hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Firstly, we characterize the $L^p\rightarrow L^q$ boundedness of local maximal operators along homogeneous hypersurfaces. Moreover, weighted $L^p$-estimates are obtained for the corresponding global operators. Secondly, for a class of hypersurfaces that lack a homogeneous structure and pass through the origin, we attempt to look for other geometric properties instead of height of hypersurfaces to characterize the optimal $L^p$-boundedness of the corresponding global maximal operators.

On certain extremal Banach-Mazur distances in small dimensions

Abstract:We study the maximal possible Banach-Mazur distance for certain pairs of symmetric convex bodies. A classical consequence of the John Ellipsoid Theorem is that the Banach-Mazur distance of a symmetric convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ to the $n$-dimensional Euclidean ball is not greater than $\sqrt{n}$. Equality holds in every dimension $n$ for the unit balls of $\ell_1^n$ and $\ell_{\infty}^n$, that is, for cross-polytopes and parallelotopes in dimension $n$. While it is known that in dimension $n \geq 4$, there are more convex bodies (not affinely equivalent to either of the previous two) with the distance $\sqrt{n}$ to the ball, and that for $n=2$ the parallelogram is unique, the characterization of the equality case for dimension $n=3$ seems to have never been published. We prove that the three-dimensional cross-polytopes and parallelotopes are the only symmetric convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the distance $\sqrt{3}$ to the Euclidean ball. Moreover, in the planar case we establish the stability of the uniqueness of the parallelogram with the best possible (linear) order of the estimate. We also consider the maximal possible Banach-Mazur distance between planar $1$-symmetric convex bodies. In this case, we prove that the maximal possible distance is $\sqrt{2}$ and characterize the equality case, which again involves a parallelogram.

Lebesgue bounds for multilinear spherical and lacunary maximal averages

Abstract:We establish $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^d) \times \cdots \times L^{p_n}(\mathbb R^d) \rightarrow L^r(\mathbb R^d)$ bounds for spherical averaging operators $\mathcal A^n$ in dimensions $d \geq 2$ for indices $1\le p_1,\dots , p_n\le \infty$ and $\frac{1}{p_1}+\cdots +\frac{1}{p_n}=\frac{1}{r}$. We obtain this result by first showing that $\mathcal A^n$ maps $L^1 \times \cdots \times L^1 \rightarrow L^1$. Our result extends that in \cite{IPS2021} for the case of $n = 2$. We also obtain similar estimates for lacunary maximal spherical averages in the largest possible open region of indices.

Abstract:Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions.

Abstract:Motivated by the problem of spherical summability of products of Fourier series, we study the boundedness of the bilinear Bochner-Riesz multipliers $(1 - {\left| \xi \right|^2} - {\left| \eta \right|^2})_ + ^\delta $ and make some advances in this investigation. We obtain an optimal result concerning the boundedness of these means from L 2 × L 2 into L 1 with minimal smoothness, i.e., any δ > 0, and we obtain estimates for other pairs of spaces for larger values of δ. Our study is broad enough to encompass general bilinear multipliers m(ξ, η) radial in ξ and η with minimal smoothness, measured in Sobolev space norms. The results obtained are based on a variety of techniques that include Fourier series expansions, orthogonality, and bilinear restriction and extension theorems.

Abstract:We obtain $L^p-$estimates for the full and lacunary maximal functions associated to the twisted bilinear spherical averages given by \[\mathfrak{A}_t(f_1,f_2)(x,y)=\int_{\mathbb S^{2d-1}}f_1(x+tz_1,y)f_2(x,y+tz_2)\;d\sigma(z_1,z_2),\;t>0,\] for all dimensions $d\geq1$. We show that the estimates for such operators in dimensions $d\geq2$ essentially relies on the method of slicing. The bounds for the lacunary maximal function in dimension one is more delicate and requires a trilinear smoothing inequality which is based on an appropriate sublevel set estimate in this context.
