Abstract:In this note we study boundedness of a large class of maximal operators in Sobolev spaces that includes the spherical maximal operator. We also study the size of the set of Lebesgue points with respect to convergence associated with such maximal operators.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the boundedness problem of a class of maximal operators in Sobolev spaces, especially the properties of the spherical maximal operator. Specifically, the paper attempts to solve the following several core problems:
1. **Boundedness of maximal operators in Sobolev spaces**:
- It studies the boundedness of a wide class of maximal operators \( S_\mu \) in the Sobolev space \( W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \). This class of operators includes the spherical maximal operator \( S \) and the maximal operator of boundary cube averages.
- It is proved that for a measure \( \mu \) satisfying certain conditions, there exists a constant \( C \) such that \( S_\mu u \leq C T u \) for all \( u \in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \), where \( T u = M u+I|\nabla u| \). Here \( M u \) is the Hardy - Littlewood maximal operator and \( I|\nabla u| \) is the Riesz potential operator.
2. **Size of the Lebesgue point set**:
- It studies the size of the Lebesgue point set related to the above - mentioned maximal operators. A Lebesgue point is a point where the average value of a function in its neighborhood converges to the function value at that point.
- It provides a generalized Federer - Ziemer theorem and proves that for \( u\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \), there exists a set \( E \) with \( p \)-capacity zero such that the Lebesgue points of \( u \) hold almost everywhere on \( \mathbb{R}^n\setminus E \).
3. **Boundedness of the spherical maximal operator in Sobolev spaces**:
- It poses an open problem regarding the boundedness of the spherical maximal operator \( S \) in the Sobolev space \( W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \). Specifically, whether for all \( n\geq2 \) and \( 1 < p < n \), the spherical maximal operator \( S \) is bounded from \( W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \) to \( \dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \).
Through these studies, the paper provides some new proof methods and techniques, especially when dealing with the boundedness problem of maximal operators in Sobolev spaces, avoiding the use of the Bourgain - Stein theorem, thus providing new ideas for further research in this field.
