Abstract:Expanding upon the widely recognized notion of mathematical universality in Turing machines, a concept of thermodynamic universality in Turing machines is introduced. Under the physical Church-Turing thesis, the existence of a thermodynamically universal Turing machine (TUTM) is demonstrated. A TUTM not only has the capability to simulate the input-output behavior of any given Turing machine but also replicate the heat production of that machine up to an additive constant. The finding shows that the hypothesis that the physical world is simulated by Turing machines may not be completely absurd.

Toward a Universal Quantum Computer

Abstract:According to Deutsch, a universal quantum Turing machine (UQTM) is able to perform, in repeating a fixed unitary transformation on the total system, an arbitrary unitary transformation on an arbitrary data state, by including a program as another part of the input state. We note that if such a UQTM really exists, with the program state dependent on the data state, and if the prescribed halting scheme is indeed valid, then there would be no entanglement between the halt qubit and other qubits, as pointed out by Myers. If, however, the program is required to be independent of the data, the concerned entanglement appears, and is problematic no matter whether the halt qubit is monitored or not. We also note that for a deterministic programmable quantum gate array, as discussed by Nielson and Chuang, if the program is allowed to depend on the data state, then its existence has not been ruled out. On the other hand, if UQTM exists, it can be simulated by repeating the operation of a fixed gate array. However, more importantly, we observe that it is actually still open whether Deutsch's UQTM exists and whether a crucial concatenation scheme, of which the halting scheme is a special case, is valid.

Abstract:This article aims at providing signal machines as small as possible able to perform any computation (in the classical understanding). After presenting signal machines, it is shown how to get universal ones from Turing machines, cellular-automata and cyclic tag systems. Finally a halting universal signal machine with 13 meta-signals and 21 collision rules is presented.

Abstract:Generalized tautologies theories of universal logic are studied for the first time. A series of properties of generalized tautologies of the basic formal system of universal logic are discussed. The main results are: In the basic formal system of universal logic, for each rational number in [0, 1], it has arrivable tautology, for each irrational num- ber in [0, 1], it has no arrivable tautology; A partition about F(S) is provided; The sufficient condition which makes [α]-MP rule hold for α∈I_Q is obtained.

Abstract:In this work, we reveal a type of impossibility discovered in our recent research which forbids comparing the closeness of multiple unknown quantum states with any nontrivial threshold in a perfect or unambiguous way. This impossibility is distinct from the existing impossibilities in that it is a "collective" impossibility on multiple quantum states; most other "no-go" theorems are concerned with only one single state each time, i.e., it is an impossibility on a nonlocal quantum operation. This impossibility may provide new insight into the nature of quantum mechanics, and it implies more limitations on quantum information tasks than the existing no-go theorems.

Abstract:Multiway Turing machines (also known as nondeterministic Turing machines or NDTMs) with explicit, simple rules are studied. Even very simple rules are found to generate complex behavior, characterized by complex multiway graphs, that can be visualized in multispace that combines "tape" and branchial space. The threshold for complex behavior appears to be machines with just s = 1 head states, k = 2 tape colors and p = 3 possible cases, and such machines may potentially be universal. Other characteristics of multiway Turing machines are also studied, including causal invariance, cyclic tapes and generalized busy beaver problems. Multiway Turing machines provide minimal examples of a variety of issues encountered in both concurrent computing and the theory of observers in quantum mechanics, especially in our recent models of physics.

Abstract:We show that an arbitrary quantum state cannot be universally 1→2 copied keeping the original copy unchanged. Abstract:This paper presents a mathematical model for a mechanical computercalled the Turing Tumble. We show that our model called Turing Tumble Model (TTM) is computationally universalunder the assumptions that a configuration of TTM is sufficiently large and thatlocal interactions between elements can be transferred without limitations. TheTuring Tumble has a strict constraint, based on gravity, since signals can only move from top to bottom. We introduce a uniform scheme that takes into accountthis restriction in directionality to construct universal machines in the TTMbased on directed acyclic graphs. This model may be useful for implementingcomputers that exploit mechanical interactions in nature, especially those onmicrometer-scales.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the synthesis of ternary reversible circuits in the absence of ancilla bits. We demonstrated that 2-qudit ternary Swap, NOT and 1-controlled-NOT gates are universal for realization of arbitrary ternary n-qudit reversible circuits without ancilla qudits, and all even ternary n-qudit reversible circuits can be constructed by ternary NOT and ternary 1-controlled-NOT gates without ancilla qudits. The realization approach is constructive. This result is significantly different from the binary case.

Abstract:It was shown that the copying quality of the Wootters–Zurek quantum copying machine depends on the input states. So Buzek and Hillery proposed the notion of universal copying machine. A universal machine is a quantum copier whose copying quality is independent of the input states. Buzek and Hillery further introduced a class of universal copying machines. In this short Letter, we establish a sufficient and necessary condition for a general copying machine to be universal. This condition will degenerate to the Buzek and Hillery's original one when we use it to analyze the Buzek and Hillery machines. On the other hand, this result enables us to find some new universal quantum-copying machines, and it also helps us to derive some interesting properties of universal machines.

Abstract:The Church-Turing thesis asserts that if a partial strings-to-strings function is effectively computable then it is computable by a Turing machine. In the 1930s, when Church and Turing worked on their versions of the thesis, there was a robust notion of algorithm. These traditional algorithms are known also as classical or sequential. In the original thesis, effectively computable meant computable by an effective classical algorithm. Based on an earlier axiomatization of classical algorithms, the original thesis was proven in 2008. Since the 1930s, the notion of algorithm has changed dramatically. New species of algorithms have been and are being introduced. We argue that the generalization of the original thesis, where effectively computable means computable by an effective algorithm of any species, cannot possibly be true.

Abstract:It has been known since 1996 that deciding whether a collection of creases on a piece of paper can be fully folded flat without causing self-intersection or adding new creases is an NP-Hard problem (Bern and Hayes). In their proof, a binary state was implemented as a pleat, with the state corresponding to the pleat layering order; states then interact via pleat intersections. Building on some of the machinery of their result, we will present a method for constructing an origami NAND logic gate, leading to a theoretical origami Universal Turing Machine.

Abstract:We consider models of quantum computation that involve operations performed on some fixed resourceful quantum state. Examples that fit this paradigm include magic state injection and measurement-based approaches. We introduce a framework that incorporates both of these cases and focus on the role of coherence (or superposition) in this context, as exemplified through the Hadamard gate. We prove that given access to incoherent unitaries (those that are unable to generate superposition from computational basis states, e.g. CNOT, diagonal gates), classical control, computational basis measurements, and any resourceful ancillary state (of arbitrary dimension), it is not possible to implement any coherent unitary (e.g. Hadamard) exactly with non-zero probability. We also consider the approximate case by providing lower bounds for the induced trace distance between the above operations and $n$ Hadamard gates. To demonstrate the stability of this result, this is then extended to a similar no-go result for the case of using $k$ Hadamard gates to exactly implement $n>k$ Hadamard gates.

Abstract:In this paper, we study some variants of fuzzy Turing machines (FTMs) and universal FTM. First, we give several formulations of FTMs, including, in particular, deterministic FTMs (DFTMs) and nondeterministic FTMs (NFTMs). We then show that DFTMs and NFTMs are not equivalent as far as the power of recognizing fuzzy languages is concerned. This contrasts sharply with classical TMs. Second, we show that there is no universal FTM that can exactly simulate any FTM on it. But if the membership degrees of fuzzy sets are restricted to a fixed finite subset A of [0,1], such a universal machine exists. We also show that a universal FTM exists in some approximate sense. This means, for any prescribed accuracy, that we can construct a universal machine that simulates any FTM with the given accuracy. Finally, we introduce the notions of fuzzy polynomial time-bounded computation and nondeterministic fuzzy polynomial time-bounded computation, and investigate their connections with polynomial time-bounded computation and nondeterministic polynomial time-bounded computation.

Abstract:We explore the possible connections between the dynamic behaviour of a system and Turing universality in terms of the system's ability to (effectively) transmit and manipulate information. Some arguments will be provided using a defined compression-based transition coefficient which quantifies the sensitivity of a system to being programmed. In the same spirit, a list of conjectures concerning the ability of Busy Beaver Turing machines to perform universal computation will be formulated. The main working hypothesis is that universality is deeply connected to the qualitative behaviour of a system, particularly to its ability to react to external stimulus--as it needs to be programmed--and to its capacity for transmitting this information.
