Abstract:A novel two-state, Reversible Cellular Automata (RCA) is described. This three-dimensional RCA is shown to be capable of universal computation. Additionally, evidence is offered that this RCA Is capable of universal construction.

Abstract:This paper characterizes symmetric ternary cellular automata (CA -3) with the help of matrix algebra.CA -3 employing additive rules can be uniformly represented by a symmetric ternary characteristic matrix.Based on the proposed scheme,CA -3 is further compared with conventional binary cellular automata in those aspects such as maximal length and attractors. It is also found that CA -3 has some new behaviors like symmetry property during state transition.

Abstract:We Propose A Novel Automaton Model which uses Arithmetic Operations as the Evolving Rules, each cell has the states of the Natural Numbers k = (N), a radius of r = 1/2 and operates on an arbitrary input size. The Automaton reads an Arithmetic Expression as an input and outputs another Arithmetic Expression. Abstract:Reversibility is one of the most significant properties of cellular automata (CA). In this paper, we focus on the reversibility of one-dimensional finite CA under reflective boundary conditions (RBC). We present two algorithms for deciding the reversibility of one-dimensional CA under RBC. Both algorithms work for not only linear rules but also non-linear rules. The first algorithm is to determine what we call the "strict reversibility" of CA. The second algorithm is to compute what we call the "reversibility function" of CA. Reversibility functions are proved to be periodic. Based on the algorithms, we list some experiment results of one-dimensional CA under RBC and analyse some features of this family of CA.

We explore some chaotic CA (believed to belong to Class III) reported over the course of the CA history, that may be candidates for universal computation, hence spurring the discussion on Turing universality on both Wolfram's classes III and IV.

Abstract:We introduce several concepts such as prime and composite rule, tools and methods for causal composition and decomposition. We discover and prove new universality results in ECA, namely, that the Boolean composition of ECA rules 51 and 118, and 170, 15 and 118 can emulate ECA rule 110 and are thus Turing-universal coupled systems. We construct the 4-colour Turing-universal cellular automaton that carries the Boolean composition of the 2 and 3 ECA rules emulating ECA rule 110 under multi-scale coarse-graining. We find that rules generating the ECA rulespace by Boolean composition are of low complexity and comprise prime rules implementing basic operations that when composed enable complex behaviour. We also found a candidate minimal set with only 38 ECA prime rules---and several other small sets---capable of generating all other (non-trivially symmetric) 88 ECA rules under Boolean composition.

Abstract:We present a simple one-dimensional Cellular Automaton (CA) which has the property that an initial state composed of two binary numbers evolves quickly into a final state which is their sum. We call this CA the Adding Cellular Automaton (ACA). The ACA requires only 2N two-state cells in order to add any two N-1 bit binary numbers. The ACA could be directly realized as a wireless nanometer-scale computing device - a possible implementation using coupled quantum dots is outlined.

Abstract:While for synchronous deterministic cellular automata there is an accepted definition of reversibility, the situation is less clear for asynchronous cellular automata. We first discuss a few possibilities and then investigate what we call phase space invertible asynchronous cellular automata in more detail. We will show that for each Turing machine there is such a cellular automaton simulating it, and that it is decidable whether an asynchronous cellular automaton has this property or not, even in higher dimensions.

Abstract:We present the first experimental realization of a ratchet cellular automaton (RCA) which has been recently suggested as an alternative approach for performing logical operations with interacting (quasi) particles. Our study was performed with interacting colloidal particles which serve as a model system for other dissipative systems i.e. magnetic vortices on a superconductor or ions in dissipative optical arrays. We demonstrate that noise can enhance the efficiency of information transport in RCA and consequently enables their optimal operation at finite temperatures.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a variant of non-uniform cellular automata, named as Temporally Non-Uniform Cellular Automata (t-NUCAs), which temporally use two rules, $f$ and $g$ in a sequence $\mathcal{R}$. To observe reversibility in t-NUCAs, we study their injectivity and surjectivity properties. Unlike classical CAs, some irreversible t-NUCAs show the behavior similar to reversible t-NUCAs. To study this behavior, we define restricted surjectivity of t-NUCA and introduce restricted reversibility which shows reversibility of t-NUCA for a set of initial configurations. By further investigating the remaining irreversible t-NUCAs, some t-NUCAs are found which have many-to-one mapping in their configuration space, but do not have non-reachable (Garden-of-Eden) configurations. We name these t-NUCAs as weakly reversible t-NUCAs. Under finite lattice size, a t-NUCA, like any classical CA, shows cyclic behavior. We explore this cyclic behavior and discuss its relation with rule sequence. Finally, we note down the possible longest cycle length of a t-NUCA, based on the lattice size and rule sequence.

Transductions Computed by One-Dimensional Cellular Automata

Abstract:Cellular automata are investigated towards their ability to compute transductions, that is, to transform inputs into outputs. The families of transductions computed are classified with regard to the time allowed to process the input and to compute the output. Since there is a particular interest in fast transductions, we mainly focus on the time complexities real time and linear time. We first investigate the computational capabilities of cellular automaton transducers by comparing them to iterative array transducers, that is, we compare parallel input/output mode to sequential input/output mode of massively parallel machines. By direct simulations, it turns out that the parallel mode is not weaker than the sequential one. Moreover, with regard to certain time complexities cellular automaton transducers are even more powerful than iterative arrays. In the second part of the paper, the model in question is compared with the sequential devices single-valued finite state transducers and deterministic pushdown transducers. It turns out that both models can be simulated by cellular automaton transducers faster than by iterative array transducers.

Abstract:An optical incoherent implementation of a general and programmable cellular automaton is reported. The implementation is based on an incoherent multiple-imaging system and electronic nonlinear circuits. All of 256 distinct local rules of a 1D elementary cellular automaton are achieved by simply specifying the different transparencies of a spatial light modulator (SLM) mask. The complex cellular automata can be synthesized based on the optical system. Simulations and experimental results are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that there is a strongly universal cellular automaton in the dodecagrid, the tesselllation {5,3,4} of the hyperbolic 3D space, with four states but, it is not rotation invariant as the automaton of arXiv:2104.01561 is with five states. The present paper is not an improvement of arXiv:2104.01561. The reduction to four states of the automaton of the present paper results from a relaxation of the condition of rotation invariance. However, the relaxation is not complete: the rules are invariant with respect to rotations of the dodecahedron which leave it globally invariant which also leave invariant a couple of opposite faces of the dodecahedron. As there are twenty five such rotations, it can be considered that the reduction to four states is significant although the relaxation it implied.

Abstract:We illustrate an application of Algorithmic Information Dynamics to Cellular Automata (CA) demonstrating how this digital calculus is able to quantify change in discrete dynamical systems. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the Block Decomposition Method on 1D and 2D CA, including Conway's Game of Life, against measures of statistical nature such as compression (LZW) and Shannon Entropy in two different contexts (1) perturbation analysis and (2) dynamic-state colliding CA. The approach is interesting because it analyses a quintessential object native to software space (CA) in software space itself by using algorithmic information dynamics through a model-driven universal search instead of a traditional statistical approach e.g. LZW compression or Shannon entropy. The colliding example of two state-independent (if not three as one is regulating the collision itself) discrete dynamical systems offers a potential proof of concept for the development of a multivariate version of the AID calculus.

A study on the composition of elementary cellular automata

Abstract:Elementary cellular automata (ECA) are one-dimensional discrete models of computation with a small memory set that have gained significant interest since the pioneer work of Stephen Wolfram, who studied them as time-discrete dynamical systems. Each of the 256 ECA is labeled as rule $X$, where $X$ is an integer between $0$ and $255$. An important property, that is usually overlooked in computational studies, is that the composition of any two one-dimensional cellular automata is again a one-dimensional cellular automaton. In this chapter, we begin a systematic study of the composition of ECA. Intuitively speaking, we shall consider that rule $X$ has low complexity if the compositions $X \circ Y$ and $Y \circ X$ have small minimal memory sets, for many rules $Y$. Hence, we propose a new classification of ECA based on the compositions among them. We also describe all semigroups of ECA (i.e., composition-closed sets of ECA) and analyze their basic structure from the perspective of semigroup theory. In particular, we determine that the largest semigroups of ECA have $9$ elements, and have a subsemigroup of order $8$ that is $\mathcal{R}$-trivial, property which has been recently used to define random walks and Markov chains over semigroups.

Abstract:The property of reversibility is quite meaningful for the classic theoretical computer science model, cellular automata. For the reversibility problem for a CA under null boundary conditions, while linear rules have been studied a lot, the non-linear rules remain unexplored at present. The paper investigates the reversibility problem of general one-dimensional CA on a finite field $\mathbb{Z}_p$, and proposes an approach to optimize the Amoroso's infinite CA surjectivity detection algorithm. This paper proposes algorithms for deciding the reversibility of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. We propose a method to decide the strict reversibility of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. We also provide a bucket chain based algorithm for calculating the reversibility function of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. These decision algorithms work for not only linear rules but also non-linear rules. In addition, it has been confirmed that the reversibility function always has a period, and its periodicity is related to the periodicity of the corresponding bucket chain. Some of our experiment results of reversible CA are presented in the paper, complementing and validating the theoretical aspects, and thereby further supporting the research conclusions of this paper.

Abstract:Cellular automata (CA) are dynamical systems defined by a finite local rule but they are studied for their global dynamics. They can exhibit a wide range of complex behaviours and a celebrated result is the existence of (intrinsically) universal CA, that is CA able to fully simulate any other CA. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic density of universal cellular automata is 1 in several families of CA defined by local symmetries. We extend results previously established for captive cellular automata in two significant ways. First, our results apply to well-known families of CA (e.g. the family of outer-totalistic CA containing the Game of Life) and, second, we obtain such density results with both increasing number of states and increasing neighbourhood. Moreover, thanks to universality-preserving encodings, we show that the universality problem remains undecidable in some of those families.
