Abstract:In this paper, we prove that there is a strongly universal cellular automaton on the pentagrid with six states. For each cell c, Moore neighbourhood consists of the cells which share a vertex with c. Moreover, the rules are rotation invariant. There are 1072 of them. The result is different from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.06728" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.06728">arXiv:2306.06728</a>. The present paper deals with the pentagrid and not with the heptagrid, it is not at all the same context although the implementated model is basically the same. The implementation of that model is different from the quoted arXiv paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that there is a strongly universal cellular automaton in the dodecagrid, the tesselllation {5,3,4} of the hyperbolic 3D space, with four states but, it is not rotation invariant as the automaton of arXiv:2104.01561 is with five states. The present paper is not an improvement of arXiv:2104.01561. The reduction to four states of the automaton of the present paper results from a relaxation of the condition of rotation invariance. However, the relaxation is not complete: the rules are invariant with respect to rotations of the dodecahedron which leave it globally invariant which also leave invariant a couple of opposite faces of the dodecahedron. As there are twenty five such rotations, it can be considered that the reduction to four states is significant although the relaxation it implied.

We embed this construction into several tilings of the hyperbolic plane and of the hyperbolic 3D space giving rise to strongly universal cellular automata with 10 states.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of elementary cellular automata (ECA) rule 88 are studied from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics. Based on the results derived from the finite case, it is shown that there exist three different Bernoulli-measure subsystems of rule 88 in the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. The relationships of these three subsystems and the existence of fixed points are investigated, revealing that the union of them is not the global attractor of rule 88 under the bi-infinite case. Furthermore, the dynamical properties of topologically mixing and topological entropy of rule 88 are exploited on its subsystems. In addition, it is shown that rule 88, a member of Wolfram’s class II, possesses richer and more complicated dynamical behaviors in the space of bi-infinite sequences. Finally, it is noted that the method presented in this work is also applicable to study the dynamics of other ECA rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules therein.

Abstract:Rule 110 is a complex cellular automaton CA in Wolfram's system of identification, capable of supporting universal computation. It has been suggested that a universal CA should be on the ‘edge of chaos’, which means that the dynamical behaviour of such a system is neither simple nor chaotic. There is no doubt that the dynamical property of Rule 110 is extremely complex and still not well understood. This paper proves the existence of subsystems on which this rule is chaotic in the sense of Devaney.

Abstract:We extend the usual definition of cellular automaton on a group in order to deal with a new kind of cellular automata, like cellular automata in the hyperbolic plane and we explore some properties of these cellular automata. This definition also allows to deal with maps, intuitively considered as cellular automata, even if they did not match the usual definition, like the Margolus billiard-ball. One of the main results is an extension of Hedlund's theorem for these cellular automata.

Abstract:Cellular automata (CA) are dynamical systems defined by a finite local rule but they are studied for their global dynamics. They can exhibit a wide range of complex behaviours and a celebrated result is the existence of (intrinsically) universal CA, that is CA able to fully simulate any other CA. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic density of universal cellular automata is 1 in several families of CA defined by local symmetries. We extend results previously established for captive cellular automata in two significant ways. First, our results apply to well-known families of CA (e.g. the family of outer-totalistic CA containing the Game of Life) and, second, we obtain such density results with both increasing number of states and increasing neighbourhood. Moreover, thanks to universality-preserving encodings, we show that the universality problem remains undecidable in some of those families.

Abstract:We introduce several concepts such as prime and composite rule, tools and methods for causal composition and decomposition. We discover and prove new universality results in ECA, namely, that the Boolean composition of ECA rules 51 and 118, and 170, 15 and 118 can emulate ECA rule 110 and are thus Turing-universal coupled systems. We construct the 4-colour Turing-universal cellular automaton that carries the Boolean composition of the 2 and 3 ECA rules emulating ECA rule 110 under multi-scale coarse-graining. We find that rules generating the ECA rulespace by Boolean composition are of low complexity and comprise prime rules implementing basic operations that when composed enable complex behaviour. We also found a candidate minimal set with only 38 ECA prime rules---and several other small sets---capable of generating all other (non-trivially symmetric) 88 ECA rules under Boolean composition.

Abstract:Elementary cellular automata (ECA) are one-dimensional discrete models of computation with a small memory set that have gained significant interest since the pioneer work of Stephen Wolfram, who studied them as time-discrete dynamical systems. Each of the 256 ECA is labeled as rule $X$, where $X$ is an integer between $0$ and $255$. An important property, that is usually overlooked in computational studies, is that the composition of any two one-dimensional cellular automata is again a one-dimensional cellular automaton. In this chapter, we begin a systematic study of the composition of ECA. Intuitively speaking, we shall consider that rule $X$ has low complexity if the compositions $X \circ Y$ and $Y \circ X$ have small minimal memory sets, for many rules $Y$. Hence, we propose a new classification of ECA based on the compositions among them. We also describe all semigroups of ECA (i.e., composition-closed sets of ECA) and analyze their basic structure from the perspective of semigroup theory. In particular, we determine that the largest semigroups of ECA have $9$ elements, and have a subsemigroup of order $8$ that is $\mathcal{R}$-trivial, property which has been recently used to define random walks and Markov chains over semigroups.

Abstract:A one-dimensional cellular automaton $\tau : A^\mathbb{Z} \to A^\mathbb{Z}$ is a transformation of the full shift defined via a finite neighborhood $S \subset \mathbb{Z}$ and a local function $\mu : A^S \to A$. We study the family of cellular automata whose finite neighborhood $S$ is an interval containing $0$, and there exists a pattern $p \in A^S$ satisfying that $\mu(z) = z(0)$ if and only if $z \neq p$; this means that these cellular automata have a unique \emph{active transition}. Despite its simplicity, this family presents interesting and subtle problems, as the behavior of the cellular automaton completely depends on the structure of $p$. We show that every cellular automaton $\tau$ with a unique active transition $p \in A^S$ is either idempotent or strictly almost equicontinuous, and we completely characterize each one of these situations in terms of $p$. In essence, the idempotence of $\tau$ depends on the existence of a certain subpattern of $p$ with a translational symmetry.

Abstract:We study the generic limit sets of one-dimensional cellular automata, which intuitively capture their asymptotic dynamics while discarding transient phenomena. As our main results, we characterize the automata whose generic limit set is a singleton, and show that this class is $\Sigma^0_2$-complete. We also prove that given a CA whose generic limit set is guaranteed to be a singleton, the sole configuration it contains cannot be algorithmically determined.

Abstract:We prove a converse to Moore's ``Garden-of-Eden'' theorem: a group G is amenable if and only if all cellular automata living on G that admit mutually erasable patterns also admit gardens of Eden. It had already been conjectured in that amenability could be characterized by cellular automata. We prove the first part of that conjecture.

Abstract:We propose a four-way classification of two-dimensional semi-totalistic cellular automata that is different than Wolfram's, based on two questions with yes-or-no answers: do there exist patterns that eventually escape any finite bounding box placed around them? And do there exist patterns that die out completely? If both of these conditions are true, then a cellular automaton rule is likely to support spaceships, small patterns that move and that form the building blocks of many of the more complex patterns that are known for Life. If one or both of these conditions is not true, then there may still be phenomena of interest supported by the given cellular automaton rule, but we will have to look harder for them. Although our classification is very crude, we argue that it is more objective than Wolfram's (due to the greater ease of determining a rigorous answer to these questions), more predictive (as we can classify large groups of rules without observing them individually), and more accurate in focusing attention on rules likely to support patterns with complex behavior. We support these assertions by surveying a number of known cellular automaton rules.
