Abstract:Based on the statistic analysis of highway construction accidents in the past, the characteristics of these kinds of accidents are summarized. It was concluded that the occurrence of highway construction accidents are influenced by the combination of the geological conditions, the external environment of society, the runaway of construction machinery and the subjective errors of constructors. The relation among these factors is analyzed by the theory of accident causation in safety ergonomics. Aiming at the inducements, the pre-controlling mode for highway construction safety is provided. Main causes, construction process and emergency rescue methods are monitored and evaluated. Finally, pre-controlling measures are established by pre-warning analysis so as to reduce the loss caused by highway construction accidents to the minimum.

Abstract:With the development of theory and practice of the international project claim management, the contractor carrying out the contract claims is no longer based solely on the contract agreement, but rather towards the combination of contractual and legal trends. In FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Civil Engineering Construction (Red Book, 1987 edition), there has a more comprehensive description and requirements of the rights of the employer, engineer and the contractor. So the specific acts of the parties involved the contract may result in "Breach of Contract" and trigger claims of time and cost. In this paper, according to a further analysis of a series of claim cases based on the Red Book we have studied the background of the contractual and legal of "Breach of Contract" in depth.

Abstract:The theory lags far behind the engineering practice,though the composite ground under flexible foundation has been widely applied to several engineering fields,such as embankments of highway and railway,dams,tailing dams,stack yards.Combined with the present situation analysis of analytical method,the settlement characteristics of the composite ground under flexible foundation was summarized firstly.Then,a simplified analytical solution was presented briefly.The fellowing verification by an engineering case indicates that the solution can more accurately reflect the working behavior of the composite ground under a flexible foundation.And then,on a basis of a standard example,the relationships among eight influence factors and the height of the equal settlement plane,the depth of the neutral point,the stab deformation,the settlement of pile and soil etc.were studied through the solution.It can be concluded that the factors of the four components of the system can all affect the settlement characteristics more or less.It is necessary to pay more attention to the composite ground under flexible foundation based on super-sub structure interaction.

Abstract:Engineering-Procurement-Construction (EPC) method has increasingly been applied in international markets. In this research, the causes of contractors’ claims in international EPC projects are modeled and empirically tested with industry survey, structural equation modeling and case studies from the perspective of Chinese contractors. The established model outlines the causes of contractors’ claims as: external risk (sociopolitical risks, economic risks, and natural hazards), clients’ organizational behavior (untimely payment, change orders, and inefficient processing), and project definition in contract (unclear scope of works, and unclear technical specification). The structural equation modelling validates that these causes have direct influences on claim respectively. Besides, clients’ organizational behavior acts as a partial mediation between external risk and claim, demonstrating that external risk can also exert influence on claim through affecting clients’ organizational behavior. Seven case studies further confirmed and interpreted the substantive meaning of these relationships. This study establishes interdisciplinary linkages among knowledge areas of contracting, risk management, organizational behavior, and international EPC project delivery, which has important primary contributions in both theory and practice. Understanding how the fundamental factors interactively lead to claims can help contracting parties to develop effective claim strategies, proactively mitigate project risks, and ultimately improve EPC project performance.

Abstract:The long-term uneven settlement may cause the pipe structure cracking, leakage or even serious damage during the operation of the immersed tunnel. Settlement control measures of immersed tunnel were generalized from design-construction-operation three stages as the time order, and the control measures in the construction stage was particular emphasized. The treatment methods of the base layer were reclassified into compact the base, replace the base and pile base three types and relative project cases were enumerated. Contrary to the shortage of present stage, control measures and suggestion that fit soft base were raised after compare.

Abstract:Many industry disputes originate during the pre-contract stage, emphasizing the importance of preventing these issues early on rather than relying on post-facto resolutions. Therefore, professionals need to act proactively to avoid lapses in the pre-contract stage from the initial stage of the construction project. However, the current literature lacks an investigation of dispute avoidance by identifying professionals involved in the pre-contract phase of construction projects. This research, thus, aims to investigate the strategies to avoid disputes in construction projects in the pre-contract stage from the perspective of responsible professionals. The study adopted a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews among 15 industry practitioners involved in dispute management practices, selected through purposive sampling. The data collected was analyzed using the N-Vivo12. The findings revealed 48 lapses in the pre-contract stage and 104 strategies to avoid disputes. The findings further revealed that most of the lapses occurred during the technical stage. In contrast, the architects are responsible for design errors, and quantity surveyors contribute to documentation issues. The research offers a comprehensive framework for professionals and regulatory authorities to encourage dispute mitigation efforts, thereby contributing to the body of knowledge.

Abstract:The problems of environment geotechnical damage and the prediction and control of the deformations during construction by using artificial intelligent method are discussed in this article.Such soil damage and unallowable deformations are often happened under engineering construction in urban down-town areas due to construction disturbance.The factors of soil disturbance owing to various changes,as stress behavior,stress path under unloading condition in excavation,soil-void ratio,moisture content,as well as the failure of soil structures,change of soil chemical compositions,the mixture and separation of soil components,soil consolidation state,and so forth,are systematically studied.Furthermore,influence of construction disturbance as the changes of soil engineering properties above-mentioned on the soil strength,deformation,stability and bearing capacity during construction are studied theoretically and by lab-tests:sets of special experimental studies are conducted.In the other respect,for the first time soft science theory and techniques of artificial intelligence prediction and automatic control are introduced into the geotechnical field.A so-called “multi-step circulation” model of artificial neural network (ANN) method applied to predicting and forecasting the ground settlement in shield tunneling has been built,and a method of fuzzy-logic control has been used to realize the real-time and active control of deformation and displacement in construction works.

Abstract:Because of the existence of confined water at the bottom of the deep foundation pit soil, when the weight of impervious soil above cannot balance with hydraulic head, improper construction method can easily lead to piping, the instability of foundation pit enclosures and many other problems. In this paper, many risk sources related confined water are analyzed and many specific requirements are put forward for survey, design and construction. Because the foundation pit is near the river and there are penetration channels between confined water and river water, so the change of river water level will cause the rise or fall of confined water head. In view of the design head was reference the change of groundwater level in nearly one year, not considering the head changes throughout the years, which become the hidden danger caused accident. In the end, the river water level rising during construction, confined water pressure exceeded expectations and caused the piping. After the accident, water channel was soon clogged. And then concrete was poured into soil at the bottom of foundation pit. The soil property improved and thickness of impervious soil increased significantly. Piping problem was resolved and the project was completed safety. Grouting method is an effective way to ensure foundation pit excavation safety when confined water head is larger. Research in this paper has a strong guiding role in controlling risk of the pressure water during design and construction, especially engineering near river or ocean.
