Abstract:Hubert H.D. Griffith was a significant but neglected contributor in the scientific discovery of Australia's natural heritage. Although his interests were forged in his youth in Tasmania, his return to Adelaide as a young man heralded an energetic engagement with leading scientific societies and figures over nearly two decades at the beginning of the twentieth century. His interests were wide, spanning insects, birds, plants and photography. In particular, he supported J.M. Black in his preparation of the Flora of South Australia. Griffith's impressive collections of beetles and plants have been consulted by taxonomists for more than a century and are now preserved in various state and national museums and herbaria in Australia. One genus ( Griffithia ) and 14 species of beetles and an important southern Australian seagrass, Amphibolis griffithii , are named after him in recognition of his contributions to science. A longtime and respected citizen of Adelaide, another enduring legacy of Hubert and his wife May (née Scott) is the Griffith Hospital, a private rehabilitation hospital they endowed in the 1950s, which continues to provide valued services to the South Australian community.

Abstract:This article examines psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan's approach to the issue of homosexuality. Sullivan (1892-1949), well-known for his interpersonal theory of mental illness, is believed to have accomplished a high recovery rate in his treatment of schizophrenia during the 1920s. Most of his patients, as well as Sullivan himself, were concerned about their "homosexual" orientations. He encouraged physical affection between male patients and male attendants, believing that it would free patients from their guilt for their "unconventional" sexuality. But he kept his compelling practice hidden, not bringing it into open discussion to confront the definition of homosexuality as "sickness." This article traces the process in which the omission of the important aspect of Sullivan's practice began during his lifetime and continued in the scholarship since. In so doing, the article suggests a nuanced understanding of this important figure in the U.S. intellectual and cultural history of homosexuality.

Abstract:Herb Bolotin was an excellent physicist and educator with a sense of fun and unique humor. He came to Australia as the Chamber of Manufacturers Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne in 1971, a position he held until retirement in 1995. He established nuclear structure research using the new 5U Pelletron accelerator in Melbourne, and his group became regular users of the 14UD Pelletron Accelerator at the Australian National University (now part of the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility). Upon retirement in 1996 Herb changed direction and worked successfully on bone densitometry as Emeritus Professor at Melbourne and then as Adjunct Professor at RMIT. He published in this field until 2009. He died suddenly on July 8th 2020.

Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. Harold (Hal) C. Slavkin, DDS, the 22nd president of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (1993 to 1994), died on December 22, 2023. During a career that spanned almost 6 decades, Hal distinguished himself as an international authority on craniofacial biology and an advocate for oral health equity. He served as dean of the University of Southern California's dental school, founded the school's Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology, created the nation's first PhD program in craniofacial biology, and served as the sixth director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Hal's studies of the molecular and cellular underpinnings of craniofacial malformations prepared him to champion translational research later in his career, when his work with patient advocates revealed the importance of applying new discoveries to clinical practice. A visionary thinker, skilled administrator, progressive educator, compelling communicator, researcher, scholar, and mentor, Hal was known as a Renaissance leader. He rejoiced in fostering collaborative synergies among people and organizations. Throughout his life, family was his central grounding force. He and his wife, Lois, advanced a wide range of social and community initiatives and took great pride in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We remember Hal for his indelible spirit, unflappable enthusiasm for science, fierce advocacy for social justice, and infectious zest for life. Here, we outline his multidimensional accomplishments through the lenses of academia, government, and nonprofit organizations. Although it is with heavy hearts that we bid goodbye to this remarkable man, our spirits are lightened by the many gifts he left behind.

Abstract:Memorializes Stanley R. Graham (1926-2023). In the late 1970s, Stanley Graham became president of the Association of Psychologists in Private Practice. During his presidency, he proposed merging with the APA. Ultimately, these efforts were successful, leading to the Division of Psychologists in Independent Practice (Division 42), and Stanley became its first president in 1982. During the end of the 1980s and entering the 1990s, the APA was at a crossroads. There was a real possibility that the APA would splinter into four distinct societies. During his presidency in 1990, Graham bridged this divide by helping with the creation of the science, education, public interest, and practice directorates. Abstract:Paul Bishop commenced his life in universities at Macquarie University in the School of Earth Sciences. He graduated with First Class Honours in Physical Geography and then went on to complete a PhD in 1984. When I joined the Department of Geography at University of Sydney in 1985, it was a pleasure to meet Paul. He had an adjoining office with another tutor, Peter Cowell, and it was obvious that they both brought intellectual vigour and enthusiasm to physical geography. Together they had what Peter called self-indulgent fun engaging in philosophical questioning of many topics besides sharing a love for classical music. Sadly Paul recently died (age 72) and the lights that he shone on those he worked with have gone out; but he cannot be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his partner, Geraldine Perriam.

SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Abstract:Harry Smith was a botanist with a driving passion to understand how plant growth, development and responses to the environment are regulated. He was a true experimentalist with a restless mind, a determination to question and the commitment to follow through. Harry valued achievement over background, and his research combined biochemical, molecular and physiological approaches aimed at understanding the behaviour of plants in the real world. This led him to a series of classical experiments, begun at the University of Nottingham and continued at the University of Leicester, studying how plants detect proximity and shading by other plants. This work transformed our understanding of the role of the red/far-red light-absorbing phytochrome pigments in the perception of and response to vegetative shading. Harry defined the mechanism of the shade avoidance syndrome, and this work, taught to students worldwide, is of fundamental importance in understanding plant behaviour in the natural environment and agriculture. Harry was a truly inspirational teacher, research leader and head of department, and also a visionary founder and editor of successful journals such as Plant, Cell and Environment , Molecular Ecology and Global Change Biology , as well as being a veteran gardener, tree planter, artist and car lover.
