Abstract:The reaction pathways of co-liquefaction of swine manure and crude glycerol to bio-oil (ester compounds) were investigated. Swine manure was hydrothermal treated (340 degrees C, 27.5 MPa, 15 min) with a number of model compounds in a high pressure batch reactor under inert atmosphere. The compounds were methanol, pure glycerol, mixture of pure glycerol, pure methanol and H2O, and commercial fatty acids (linoleic acid). The chemical composition of the bio-oil was analyzed by GC/MS. Glycerol, methanol and water showed synergistic effects on manure liquefaction, increasing the oil yield as high as 65%. A maximum oil yield of 79.96% was obtained when linoleic acid reacted with swine manure. Based on the results, the reaction pathways were proposed. Esterification reactions occurred not only because the crude glycerol have methanol, but also because methanol can be produced from hydrothermal reactions of glycerol. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This study aims to investigate the hydrothermal co-liquefaction of rice straw (RS) and waste cooking-oil model compound (WCOM) under sub-critical conditions for the optimum bio-crude yield and conversion. Effects of temperature, catalyst (K2CO3), residence time and mass ratios of RS to WCOM on products' distribution were examined and the reaction mechanism for co-liquefaction of RS and WCOM was also explored. The highest biocrude yield (88.77%) was obtained when mass ratio of RS to WCOM was 1:3 at 300 degrees C, 10 min and in absence of K2CO3. When the mass ratio was 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3, the synergistic effect approached 14.38%, 11.38% and 12.84%, respectively. WCOM could improve the overall conversion rate of RS during co-liquefaction. GC-MS analysis suggested that the bio-crude contained large amounts of fatty acids and smaller amounts of phenols and ketone aldehydes. Co-liquefaction was found effective to improve the qualitative and quantitate features of products from biomass.

Abstract:Biomass can be used as an energy source to thermochemical conversion processes to biocrude production. However, the supply and dependence on only one biomass for biocrude production can be an obstacle due to its seasonality, availability, and logistics costs. In this way, biomass waste and agroindustrial residues can be mixture and used as feedstock to the hydrothermal co-liquefaction (co-HTL) process as an alternative to obtaining biocrude. In this sense, the present paper analyzed the biocrude yield influence of the co-HTL from a quaternary unprecedented blend of different biomasses, such as sugarcane bagasse, brewer's spent grain (BSG), sludge from a paper recycling mill (PRM), and microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris). In this way, a simplex lattice design was employed and co-HTL experiments were carried out in a 2000 mL high-pressure stirred autoclave reactor under 275 °C for 60 min, considering 15% of feedstock/water ratio. Significant effects in each feedstock and their blends were analyzed aiming to increase biocrude and biochar yield. It was found that the addition of microalgae is only significant when considered more than 50% into the blend with BSG and PRM sludge to increase biocrude yield.
Optimizing Formic Acid-Assisted Co-HTL of Digested Sewage Sludge and Lignocellulosic Waste for Enhanced Bio-Crude Yield and Energy Recovery

Abstract:In recent years, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has gained attention as a means of enhancing and increasing the production of biofuels from biomass. Co-HTL involves the simultaneous processing of two or more feedstocks, with the potential for interactions that can affect the overall yield and quality of the resulting biofuels. This study investigates the bio-crude yield, chemical composition, and energy content of bio-crudes obtained through formic acid-assisted hydrothermal liquefaction of combined digested sewage sludge (DSS) and lignocellulose (LC). The bio-crude yields are in the range of 26.8–58.9 wt%, with a higher heating value (HHV) of approximately 32 MJ/kg. The best experiment shows that mixtures with more DSS and high levels of process condition variables (350 °C, formic acid present, and 50 wt% EtOH) give high bio-crude yields with a maximum value of 58.9 wt%. For comparison, pure DSS and LC run at these process conditions resulted in a bio-crude yield of 52.5 wt% and 48.3 wt%, respectively. Partial least squares (PLS) regression reveals a synergistic effect from mixing the feedstocks, as the quadratic term of the regression equation for mixture ratio shows a negative coefficient. GC–MS data show that combining feedstocks results in the formation of new compounds, mostly phenols, that are not present in the bio-crudes from the separate feedstocks. Thus, combining feedstocks will not only increase the resource availability for hydrothermal liquefaction and streamline the process but will also increase the overall production of bio-crude with its synergistic effect.

Abstract:Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) is a promising method for sustainable waste management and renewable energy production, converting mixed feedstocks into bio-crude, a precursor to various biofuels. A study focused on Mixed Residential Waste (MRW) as an HTL feedstock investigated temperature ranges (280 °C–360 °C) and residence times (30 min–90 min), achieving a maximum bio-crude yield of 39.16% at 340°C and 75 min. Also, a thorough investigation of the synergistic relationships between all subcomponents of the MRW feedstock was conducted and concluded that the mixed waste (MW) feedstock samples containing a higher proportion of food and plastic wastes and MRW sample presented with a co-liquefaction percentage (CE%) of around 60% and 107% respectively for production of bio crude. Also, solvents such as ethanol, glycerol and aqueous phase (AQ) were tested for their potential as hydrothermal mediums and found that bio crude yield of 46.19% was obtained in case of AQ phase recirculation. Further, the quantitative and qualitative effect of usage of four different catalysts were tested individually and in combination with AQ phase recirculation and found that, although individually Nanoporous ZnO and Diatomaceous Earth (DE) yielded bio crude in the range of 46.86% and 42.68% respectively, when used in combination, DE cat–HTL with AQ resulted in maximum bio crude yield of 54.35%. Furthermore, qualitatively, the bio crude from DE cat–HTL with AQ presented with a high carbon and energy recovery percentage of 62.20% and 72.95% respectively and a high hydrocarbon content of 58.98%. Abstract:Sludge and microalgae have been reported as the main residues of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis wastewater treatment , characterized by high moisture content and large output. Effective utilization is still a challenging task. Aiming to find out the most optimized and applicable process, eight co-hydrothermal conversion schemes were investigated in this study. It was found that using hydrothermal carbonization as pretreatment of sludge, co-hydrothermal liquefaction of two raw materials could have 45.65% bio-oil, 5.07% more than conventional co-hydrothermal liquefaction with simple mixing of sludge and microalgae in the reactor. The acid content of bio-oil was reduced by 14.4% at the same time. In another improved process, all acid of bio-oil was eliminated when the co-hydrothermal liquefaction occurred between microalgae and hydrochar obtained by sludge hydrothermal carbonization. This is more conducive to equipment material selection and reduces the difficulty of upgrading. Furthermore, the mechanism of acid transformation was explored by the hydrothermal experiment of model compounds. Based on experiment data, three optimal co-hydrothermal liquefaction systems were evaluated through conception process construction and life cycle assessment. The Global Warming Potential of co-hydrothermal liquefaction of sludge and microalgae was 39.97 kg CO 2 eq, while the Global Warming Potential of co-hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae with hydrochar obtained by sludge hydrothermal carbonization was only 25.49 kg CO 2 eq, which showed that sludge hydrothermal carbonization exhibited the largest environmental benefits. And sensitivity analysis showed that combining hydrothermal carbonization with co-hydrothermal liquefaction could reduce the influence of various environmental impact categories and improve environmental stability.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for the production of bio-crude. However, some unresolved issues still exist within HTL, which need to be resolved before its promotion on a commercial scale. The management of the aqueous phase is one of the leading challenges related to HTL. In this study, the sewage sludge has been liquefied at 350 °C with and without catalyst (K2CO3). Subsequently, aqueous phase recycling was applied to investigate the effect of recycling on bio-crude properties. Obtained results showed that the energy recovery in the form of bio-crude increased by 50% via aqueous phase recirculation, whereas nitrogen content in the bio-crude was approximately doubled after eight rounds of recycling. GCMS characterization of the aqueous phase indicated acetic acid as a major water-soluble compound, which employed as a catalyst (0.56 M), and resulted in a negligible increase in bio-crude yield. ICP-AES highlighted that the majority of the inorganics were transferred to the solid phase, while the higher accumulation of potassium and sodium was found in the aqueous phase via successive rounds of recycling.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an effective medium-temperature, high-pressure thermochemical process to dispose municipal sludge (MS), and biocrude (a crude bio-oil) is its main product. Many efforts are continued extensively to improve conversion efficiency and to promote industrial application of this technology. This work focuses on critical influencing factors (e.g., reaction temperature, residence time, atmosphere, solvent, catalyst, and pretreatment) and fundamental transformation mechanisms of main components (i.e., lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates) in MS HTL. It also analyzes migration behavior of heavy metals during MS HTL, which can provide a reference for subsequent recovery of nutrients from HTL products. Moreover, the applications of MS HTL products are systematically expounded, and potential challenges and opportunities are highlighted as well. It is necessary to develop advanced methods of catalyst recovery and innovative biocrude upgrading methods so as to reduce HTL investment and operating costs. Reusing aqueous phase and solid phase products as reaction medium and catalyst carrier separately after MS HTL is feasible to realize resource utilization of MS. This information can provide valuable guidance to promote MS HTL industrialization.
Production of low phenolic naphtha-rich biocrude through co-hydrothermal liquefaction of fecal sludge and organic solid waste using water-ethanol co-solvent

Abstract:Biocrude production from wet waste through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has become a hotspot for researchers that serves as an alternative to fossil fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting waste to energy approach. However, higher phenolic compounds in hydrothermal liquefaction-derived biocrude have raised concerns about its quality. This study focuses on the production of low phenolic naphtha-rich biocrude through co-liquefaction (320 °C and 60 min) of fecal sludge (FS) and organic solid waste (OSW), two major wet streams by optimizing feedstock (1:0, 1:1, 0:1) and water-ethanol co-solvent (1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:1). The results revealed that the highest biocrude yield of 55.7 % was achieved at 1:1 (FS: OSW) feedstock and 1:1 (water: ethanol) co-solvent with a heating value of 37.5 MJ/kg, indicating its potentiality to replace petrocrude (42–49 MJ/kg). Notably, produced biocrude is enriched with a lighter fraction (C < 20) of 90 % (85 % naphtha and 5 % jet fuel). The composition of the biocrude comprises 58 % ester, 25 % hydrocarbon, 15 % organic acid, and <1 % phenol, which ensures the least amount of phenolic compounds due to the replacement of the –OH group by the more stable ethoxy group, leading to increased naphtha yield and the absence of phenolic toxicity. Furthermore, the highest API value was recorded at 23.3, which emphasizes its similarity to conventional petroleum API gravity (medium-lighter crude). This energy-positive system (energy recovery 88 % and energy consumption ratio 0.38) could generate revenue of US$ 550 per metric ton of feedstock, suggesting the potentiality of commercialization and contributing to sustainable green energy production.

Abstract:Nitrogen-containing compounds are an important organic compound. High Value-Added Nitrogen-containing Compounds (NCCs) can be obtained through co-hydrothermal liquefaction (co-HTL) of sludge (SD) and tobacco stems (TS) with high nitrogen content. The co-HTL process is studied and optimized to obtain a maximum bio-oil yields (11.5%), corresponding to the reaction condition of 340℃, 5 MPa, SD:TS = 1:2, and t = 30 min. The characterization and analysis show that such co-HTL not only reduces the acidic components in bio-oil, thereby decreasing the propensity for vessel corrosion, but also increases the nitrogen compounds (NCCs) as well as effectively enriches the amide entities in bio-oil. When SD:TS = 2:1, the bio-oil displays a NCC concentration of up to 40.73%, while the proportion of amide entities peaks at 7.3%. The effects of adding different additives on the co-HTL are investigated as well, showing that the additives reduce the bio-oil yield, inhibit from producing NCCs, while elevate the CH4 and H2 content of hydrothermal gas. Specifically, KOH behaves the best to remove NCCs as well as enhance the hydrocarbon formation. The potential reaction mechanism of co-hydrothermal liquefaction of SD and TS was also deduced. Such co-HTL and addition of alkaline additives behave promising for a wide range of applications in preparing high value-added nitrogen-containing compounds.

Abstract:With the rapid growth in population and urbanization, sustainable disposal of sewage sludge has become a prominent problem worldwide. Therefore, an adequate treatment is required to reduce the environmental impacts created from traditional methods such as incineration, landfill, etc. In this context, sewage sludge was liquefied hydrothermally under sub-supercritical conditions with and without catalyst (K2CO3). The effect of temperature and alkali catalyst on product distribution was investigated. Obtained results showed that the temperature had a negligible influence, whereas catalyst slightly improved the bio-crude yield and quality for both sub-supercritical conditions (350 and 400 °C). Bio-crude contained N-containing compounds, ketones, phenols, acids, and long-chain hydrocarbons. Carbon and nitrogen recoveries revealed that 58–67% of the carbon went into bio-crude, while the majority of the nitrogen was transferred to the aqueous phase. ICP-AES analysis indicated that approximately 80% of the heavy metals were concentrated in the solid phase. The leaching action of citric acid with sewage sludge not only removed 40% of ash content but also reduced 38% of the fat content.

Abstract:Although many technologies can be applied to sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW) treatment, high in-vestment and operational costs, high land occupation, and the "not-in-my-backyard" effect pose many challenges in practice. Thus, it is important to develop and utilize low-carbon or negative-carbon technologies to tackle the carbon problem. This paper proposes a method of anaerobic co-digestion of FW and SS, thermally hydrolyzed sludge (THS), or THS filtrate (THF) to enhance their methane potential. Compared to the co-digestion of SS with FW, the methane yield of the co-digestion of THS and FW was 9.7-69.7% higher, and that of the co-digestion of THF and FW was 11.1-101.1% higher. The synergistic effect was weakened with the addition of THS but enhanced with the addition of THF, potentially owing to the change in humic substances. Filtration removed most humic acids (HAs) from THS but retained fulvic acids (FAs) in THF. Moreover, THF produced 71.4% of the methane yield of THS, although only 25% of the organic matter permeated from THS to THF. This indicated that hardly biodegradable substances remained in the dewatering cake and were removed from anaerobic digestion systems. The results indicate that the co-digestion of THF and FW is an effective way to enhance methane production.

Abstract:Effect of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts on hydrothermal liquefaction of primary sludge was studied. Biocrude, biochar, aqueous phase and biogas were all affected, in terms of quantity and quality. HTL without any catalyst attained a biocrude yield of 37.7 % (w/w VS ). The best improvements in biocrude yield are observed with CuSO 4 (10 %), 42.20 % (w/w VS ) and TiO 2 (20 %), 41.90 % (w/w VS ). All experiments with catalyst produced a biocrude with HHV higher than 30 MJ/kg and with carbon content higher than 60 %. The analysis demonstrated that the major fraction of biocrude were asphaltenes, the heavier phase. While, the light phase, oils, in most of the cases, contained more saturates than polars. Biochar and aqueous phase were recuperated with high organic contents, that enables their usages in further applications. Even though gas fractions were small, their compositions varied between CO, CO 2 and hydrocarbons. Catalysts were normally recuperated with the solid phase, except some cases due to their particle sizes. Most of the ashes of primary sludge were transferred to biochar. Some parts of them went to the aqueous phase and biocrude during separation process.

Abstract:Industrial wastes and natural mixed oxide materials were evaluated as inexpensive heterogeneous catalysts supports for catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of biomass. In this study, Palygorskite (ATP) clay, a hydrated magnesium aluminosilicate clay mineral supported metal catalysts (Co, Mo and Co–Mo/ATP) and Al2O3 supported (Co, Mo, Co–Mo/Al2O3) catalysts were examined for the sewage sludge (SS) hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The highest biocrude yield of 34.2 wt% was obtained with Co–Mo/ATP bimetal catalyst. Biocrude characterization revealed that significantly different families of molecules were formed in the presence and absence of catalysts, implying that the main role of the catalyst is to promote rates of thermal reactions, leading to biocrude production. The improved catalytic HTL performance with Co–Mo metal catalyst as attributed to the synergistic effects of both metal sites present on catalyst surfaces. The main components of bio-oil were phenols, N-containing compounds and hydrocarbons, and the increased selectivity to hydrocarbons with Co–Mo/ATP was observed. Maximum yield of aromatic hydrocarbon (20% observed in case of HTL with metal supported ATP catalyst. presence of Co–Mo metal catalysts promoted the deoxygenating by reduction of oxygen in the form of carbon dioxide or water. The distribution of biocrude samples indicates that most compounds in biocrude were light-weighted and had low boiling points. There were more light-weight compounds in biocrude by adding catalyst.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a rapidly developing technology that converts waste biomass, such as municipal sludge, into a petroleum-like biofuel known as biocrude . At the HTL temperature/pressure of 350 °C/170 bar that simulates an HTL unit designed for a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), this study found that >64% of energy could be recovered as biocrude from mixed primary and secondary sludge. HTL process also generates two waste streams, hydrochar and HTL aqueous. Heavy metals tend to accumulate in hydrochar, which raises concerns about its valorization. Hydrochar had concerning amounts of Cd, Mo, and Zn for land application, while it was non-hazardous for landfilling. Hydrochar had the most P distribution, resulting in a high concentration (4.6% by weight). Almost all P could be recovered by acidic extraction from hydrochar. The impacts of returning HTL aqueous to wastewater treatment processes were evaluated for the first time. HTL aqueous could be aerobically treated. However, its return increased the final effluent COD by 16.3% and 20.5% and decreased UV disinfection performance by 4% and 8% for average flow and low flow (dry season) conditions, respectively. In conclusion, this study yielded significant information in guiding the development of wastewater biorefinery by incorporating HTL into WWTPs.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) are two energy-efficient thermochemical conversion methods that can improve the dewatering performance of sewage sludge and turn it into useful products, hydrochar or bio-oil. This study presents an overview of the latest development on HTC and HTL in the field of sewage sludge disposal and focuses on critical hydrothermal parameters, physicochemical characteristics of the products, sludge dewater ability, migration behaviors of heavy metals (HMs) and nutrients, and fundamental transformation mechanisms. This work also analyzes the co-hydrothermal treatment (HT) of sludge and other wastes, which can increase product yield and improve product quality through the synergistic effect in co-HTC (or co-HTL), and compares the two thermochemical conversion methods. Moreover, the potential challenges and opportunities for the HTC and HTL of sewage sludge are highlighted. This study aims to provide additional information to promote the industrialization of sludge treatment through HTC and HTL methods.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In this study, Co/γ-Al2O3, Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3, Co/attapulgite (ATP) and Co-Mo/ATP catalysts were prepared and applied for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of sewage sludge (SS) to produce bio-oil. The properties of the catalysts were characterized by various techniques (N2 physisorption, ICP, XRD and XPS). The mesoporous nature of synthesized catalysts was conformed. Beside, Co2+ and Mo6+ particles were responsible as the major active species for catalytic HTL reactions. The effect of carrier and metal type, loading of catalyst on product yields and composition of bio-oil was studied. The highest bio-oil yield of 31.36 wt% was achieved in the presence of 10 wt% catalyst loading. The main components of bio-oil were phenols, N-containing compounds and hydrocarbons, and the increased selectivity to hydrocarbons with Co-Mo/ATP was observed. Meanwhile, TGA results showed that Co-Mo/ATP increased the low boiling point fraction (<410 °C) of bio-oil to 81.19 wt%. Additionally, catalytic HTL of SS resulted in higher carbon recovery, increasing from 55.61 to 92.24 wt%. Finally, the potential reaction mechanism of the catalysts on HTL of SS was proposed. Overall, this study provides valuable information for bio-oil production from sewage plant and further HTL implementation with ATP based catalyst, improving energy efficiency and alleviating the energy shortage.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has shown great potential to convert sewage sludge (SS) with high moisture into bio-crude. However, the disposal and reutilization of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (HTLWW) is a critical issue. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is proven to be an alternative to treat organic wastewater. Therefore, energy recovery from high ash-containing SS was studied by integrating AD with HTL. The effect of temperature on HTL efficiency was investigated and then methane production from HTLWW was conducted by AD with organic loading increasing from 2 g COD/L to 6 g COD/L. Results showed that the maximum bio-crude yield of 23.5 % was obtained at 350 °C. Methane yield of 309.4 mL CH 4 /g COD removed was achieved at 2 g COD/L with COD removal rate of 72.5 %. Meanwhile, the microbial structure and abundance showed great shifts resulting from the adaptation to complex compounds. JGI-000079-D21 , Aminicenantales , and Bacteroidetes_ vadinHA17 predominated in the bacterial community. Due to the presence of the toxic substances in HTLWW, such as phenolic and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, there was a decrease in methane yield when the organic loading was higher than 4 g COD/L. The organic matters in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were rich in fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like substances due to the attack and stimulation of toxicants. Under the condition of unstable fermentation, Advenella and Bacillus first appeared as phenol and pyridine degrading bacteria, respectively. The microbial diversity declined sharply to demonstrate the toxic effect of the refractory organics existing at high organic loading. The enrichment of Methanosaeta in methanogens meant that acetotrophic metabolism is the dominant pathway in methanogenesis. In this study, the profile of bio-fuel production from high ash-containing SS would provide an integrated reference to treat wet biomass and recover energy simultaneously.

Abstract:This study explores the recycling challenges of industrial sludge, owing to its non-recyclable properties and associated environmental problems. To promote sustainable energy utilization, a novel approach combining hydrothermal carbonization and co-gasification was employed to facilitate the conversion from waste to energy. The industrial sludge was pretreated in the batch-type hydrothermal treatment unit at 180-220 °C, followed by co-gasification. The experimental results indicate that pretreating the sludge at the hydrothermal temperature of 200 °C maximized its thermal decomposition, leading to a rougher structure with obvious cracks, eventually transforming into numerous fragmented small particles. At 1100 °C with a blending mass ratio of 1:1, the sludge hydrochar at 200 °C significantly enhanced the reactivity of coal char, exhibiting the gasification reactivity index R0.9 of 1.57 times higher than that of untreated char. Using the in-situ technique with the heating stage microscope, it was first observed that the addition of pretreated sludge coal chars underwent gasification in the shrinking core mode, displaying a significant ash melt flow phenomenon. Based on the in-situ X-ray diffraction, it was discovered that more amorphous structures were formed by the reaction of Fe with other minerals in the sludge-coal blended char after hydrothermal carbonization at 200 °C. With pretreatment at the hydrothermal temperature of 200 °C, the sludge can increase the specific surface area of the blended char and facilitate the cracking of carbon crystals during co-gasification. Its specific surface area and the Raman spectroscopic ratio ID1/IG were 1.76 and 1.17 times that of coal char, respectively. Collectively, this study highlights the potential for energy recovery from industrial sludge, contributing to sustainable waste management in the chemical industry.
