Abstract:A simple method has been developed to modify the anode interface of inverted bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells by spin-coating a thin layer of graphene oxide (GO) on top of the organic active layer. The device with GO exhibited a remarkable improvement in power conversion efficiency compared to devices without any interfacial layer, indicating that GO can effectively modify the BHJ/metal anode interface to facilitate efficient hole collection. The dependence of the device performance on the GO layer thickness was also investigated showing an optimum performance from a GO thickness of similar to 2-3 nm. Abstract:Flexible organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted considerable attention for the reason of light weight, high mechanical flexibility in display and lighting. The most widely used transparent anode indium tin oxide (ITO) is unsuitable for flexible OLEDs because of its easy cracking upon bending. In this paper, we proposed a simple two steps solution processing method to fabricate flexible PEDOT:PSS:GO/Ag NWs composite electrodes. The optimized PEDOT:PSS:GO/Ag NWs composite electrode exhibits an optical transmittance of 88.7% at a wavelength of 550 nm and a low sheet resistance of 17 Ω/sq, which arecomparable to that of ITO. With PEDOT:PSS:GO/Ag NWs composite electrodes, the turn on voltage, current density and maximum brightness of OLEDs based on composite electrode were 2.1 V, 6.2 cd/A and 22894 cd/m2, respectively, which were superior to that OLED based on ITO anode. The enhanced performance of OLEDs based on composite anode mainly attributed to the lower sheet resistance, smoother surface of the composite anode and the far surface plasma resonance (Far SPR) effect, a lower waveguide optical loss because of the introduction of Ag NWs in the electrode.
The Impact of Electrode Interface Modification on the Properties of PLEDs

Abstract:In order to study the impact of cathode or anode interface modification on the properties of polymer light-emitting diodes( PLEDs),we study the effect of graphene oxide( GO) or cesium fluoride( CsF) cathode interface modification and GO or PEDOT: PSS anode interface modification on the performance depending on the PLED of the ITO / MEH-PPV / Al structure. The results show that CsF plays a key role in cathode interface modification to greatly improve the brightness of PLEDs,and the brightness of PLEDs added GO cathode interface modification has little effect. The experiment result shows that GO is expected to become a new kind of anode interfacial modification materials and takes the place of PEDOT: PSS to modify ITO.

Abstract:Tin dioxide is regarded as an alternative anode material rather than graphite due to its high theoretical specific capacity. Modification with carbon is a typical strategy to mitigate the volume expansion effect of SnO2 during the charge process. Strengthening the interface bonding is crucial for improving the electrochemical performance of SnO2/C composites. Here, SnO2-embedded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite with a low graphene content of approximately 5 wt.% was in situ synthesized via a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal method. The structural integrity of the SnO2/rGO composite is significantly improved by optimizing the Sn-O-C electronic structure with CTAB, resulting a reversible capacity of 598 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1. CTAB-assisted synthesis enhances the rate performance and cyclic stability of tin dioxide/graphene composites, and boosts their application as the anode materials for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A typical thin and fully flexible hybrid electrode was developed by integrating the encapsulation of silver nanowires (AgNWs) network between a monolayer graphene and polymer film as a sandwich structure. Compared with the reported flexible electrodes based on PET or PEN substrate, this unique electrode exhibits the superior optoelectronic characteristics (sheet resistance of 8.06 Ω/□ at 88.3% light transmittance). Meanwhile, the specific up-to-bottom fabrication process could achieve the superflat surface (RMS = 2.58 nm), superthin thickness (∼8 μm thickness), high mechanical robustness, and lightweight. In addition, the strong corrosion resistance and stability for the hybrid electrode were proved. With these advantages, we employ this electrode to fabricate the simple flexible organic light-emitting device (OLED) and perovskite solar cell device (PSC), which exhibit the considerable performance (best PCE of OLED = 2.11 cd/A2; best PCE of PSC = 10.419%). All the characteristics of the unique hybrid electrode demonstrate its potential as a high-performance transparent electrode candidate for flexible optoelectronics.

Abstract:Graphene is an ideal substitute for indium tin oxide electrode in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, due to its outstanding electrical, optical, chemical and mechanical properties. However, the graphene electrode suffers from work function mismatch with common hole injection layer and intrinsic hydrophobic property. Here, CuxO is proposed to modify monolayer graphene in order to increase the work function of graphene (from 4.45 to 4.76 eV) and decrease the water contact angle (from 88° to 59°). Then, the OPV devices based on the CuxO modified graphene anode are fabricated successfully, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) is enhanced from 4.00 ± 0.44 to 5.23 ± 0.47%. Furthermore, the ternary blended polymer solar cell is fabricated by adding a small molecular material 1, 2, 5-thiadiazole-fused 12-ring polyaromatic hydrocarbon into the active layer, and the PCE is improved to 6.03 ± 0.53%, due to the enhanced absorption and depressed recombination inside the active layer.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets can be functionalized with reactive pentafluorophenyl ester via esterification of the carboxylic groups. The resulting reactive GO nanosheets provide a versatile platform for grafting of amino-containing polymers or biomolecules via ester-amine coupling. Coupling of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-(4-amino-phenylcarbazole)] (PFCz-NH2), amino-terminated hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG-NH2), and lysozyme (Lyz) was illustrated. The Al/GO-g-PFCz/ITO sandwich thin-film device exhibits bistable electrical switching and rewritable memory effects. The GO-g-Lyz nanohybrids exhibit high bactericidal efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli, while the GO-g-HPG nanohybrids exhibit reduced cytotoxicity toward 3T3 fibroblasts.
Hydrogen Reduced Graphene Oxide/metal Grid Hybrid Film: Towards High Performance Transparent Conductive Electrode for Flexible Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:The metal grid and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are both promising transparent conductive materials for replacing the indium tin oxide (ITO) in flexible optoelectronics. However, the large empty area that exists in the grid together with the relatively high sheet resistance of RGO hinder both the materials for practical applications. In this work, we report for the first time a novel strategy for efficient combination of the metal grid and RGO by using a newly developed room-temperature reduction technique. The obtained RGO/metal grid hybrid films not only overcome the shortcomings of individual components but exhibit enhanced optical and electrical performances (Rs=18Ωsq−1 and T=80%) and excellent flexural endurance. With this hybrid film as the window electrode, a highly flexible electrochromic device with excellent stability and ultra-fast response shorter than 60ms has been successfully fabricated. Considering its high efficiency, high quality, low cost and large area, the strategy would be particularly useful for economically fabricating various metal grid/RGO films which are quite promising high performance transparent and conductive materials for next generation optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Morphology design and synthesis of composite materials are current research trends to improve the performance of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Combining morphological design with the synthesis of composite material to synthesize the erythrocyte-like Fe 2 O 3 @SnO 2 heterostructures anchored on graphene oxide composite Fe 2 O 3 @SnO 2 @GO. The comprehensive performance of the composite was optimal when the content of graphene oxide was about 20%. The cycling curve of FSG-20 was relatively smooth and the capacity was stable at 826.2 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C current density. In addition, the capacity did not show any serious degradation when cycled at current densities from 0.1 to 2.0 C. The improved electrochemical performance of the composites was attributed to the excellent electrical conductivity and stability of graphene oxide and the synergistic effect between different substances. This multi-step modification can effectively enhance the electrochemical performance of the Fe 2 O 3 anode material.

Abstract:Alloy anodes possessed of high theoretical capacity show great potential for next-generation advanced lithium-ion battery. Even though huge volume change during lithium insertion and extraction leads to severe problems, such as pulverization and an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), various nanostructures including nanoparticles, nanowires, and porous networks can address related challenges to improve electrochemical performance. However, the complex and expensive fabrication process hinders the widespread application of nanostructured alloy anodes, which generate an urgent demand of low-cost and scalable processes to fabricate building blocks with fine controls of size, morphology, and porosity. Here, we demonstrate a scalable and low-cost process to produce a porous yin-yang hybrid composite anode with graphene coating through high energy ball-milling and selective chemical etching. With void space to buffer the expansion, the produced functional electrodes demonstrate stable cycling performance of 910 mAh g-1 over 600 cycles at a rate of 0.5C for Si-graphene "yin" particles and 750 mAh g-1 over 300 cycles at 0.2C for Sn-graphene "yang" particles. Therefore, we open up a new approach to fabricate alloy anode materials at low-cost, low-energy consumption, and large scale. This type of porous silicon or tin composite with graphene coating can also potentially play a significant role in thermoelectrics and optoelectronics applications.

Abstract:Graphene has emerged as an attractive candidate for flexible transparent electrode (FTE) for a new generation of flexible optoelectronics. Despite tremendous potential and broad earlier interest, the promise of graphene FTE has been plagued by the intrinsic trade-off between electrical conductance and transparency with a figure of merit (sigma(DC)/sigma(Op)) considerably lower than that of the state-of-the-art ITO electrodes (sigma(DC)/sigma(Op) <123 for graphene vs. similar to 240 for ITO). Here we report a synergistic electrical/optical modulation strategy to simultaneously boost the conductance and transparency. We show that a tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)boric acid (HTB) coating can function as highly effective hole doping layer to increase the conductance of monolayer graphene by sevenfold and at the same time as an antireflective layer to boost the visible transmittance to 98.8%. Such simultaneous improvement in conductance and transparency breaks previous limit in graphene FTEs and yields an unprecedented figure of merit (sigma(DC)/sigma(Op) similar to 323) that rivals the best commercial ITO electrode. Using the tailored monolayer graphene as the flexible anode, we further demonstrate high-performance green organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the maximum current, power and external quantum efficiencies (111.4 cd A(-1), 124.9 lm W-1 and 29.7%) outperforming all comparable flexible OLEDs and surpassing that with standard rigid ITO by 43%. This study defines a straight-forward pathway to tailor optoelectronic properties of monolayer graphene and to fully capture their potential as a generational FTE for flexible optoelectronics.

Abstract:One of the most significant components for implantable bioelectronic devices is the interface between the microelectrodes and the tissue or cells for disease diagnosis or treatment. To make the devices work efficiently and safely in vivo, the electrode-tissue interface should not only be confined in micro scale, but also possesses excellent electrochemical characteristic, stability and biocompatibility. Considering the enhancement of many composite materials by combining graphene oxide (GO) for its multiple advantages, we dope graphene oxide into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) forming a composite film by electrochemical deposition for electrode site modification. As a consequence, not only the enlargement of efficient surface area, but also the development of impedance, charge storage capacity and charge injection limit contribute to the excellent electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the stability and biocompatibility are confirmed by numerously repeated usage test and cell proliferation and attachment examination, respectively. As electrode-tissue interface, this biomaterial opens a new gate for tissue engineering and implantable electrophysiological devices.
Highly conductive PEDOT:PSS and graphene oxide hybrid film from a dipping treatment with hydroiodic acid for organic light emitting diodes

Abstract:Using a simple and low temperature dipping treatment in hydriodic acid (HI) solution, we have fabricated a highly conductive and transparent poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and graphene oxide (GO) hybrid film. The HI treated PEDOT: PSS with 0.01 wt% GO hybrid film can obtain a highest conductivity of about 1290 S cm(-1). The enhancement in the conductivity is mainly caused by the removal of the PSS chains of PEDOT: PSS and functional groups on the GO sheets from the hybrid film surface after the film undergoes dipping treatment in HI solution. The remaining PEDOT domains together with the reduced GO sheets can provide more conductive pathways for carriers and improve the conductivity of the film. After mixing with the reduced GO sheets, the air stability of the PEDOT: PSS hybrid film is also dramatically improved. Using the HI-treated PEDOT: PSS: GO hybrid film as an anode, we have successively fabricated organic light emitting diodes, which show higher current density and luminance values compared to those with indium tin oxide as an anode.

Abstract:This study successfully demonstrates the fabrication of a thin film of graphene oxide doped with silver nanoparticles (GO:AgNPs) using electrochemical exfoliation and photochemical synthesis. The GO:AgNPs thin film exhibits a higher work function and conductivity compared to poly[3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene] polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), making it a promising candidate for the hole-transport layer in polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). Among various configurations, a PLED incorporating GO:AgNPs as the interlayer, which is prepared under blue-light illumination, exhibits optimal luminescent performance. This configuration achieves the highest luminance of 6341 cd/m2 and the highest average current efficiency of 1.87 cd/A. Notably, this novel PLED demonstrates a remarkable 168 % enhancement in average current efficiency and an impressive 637 % increase in electroluminescence intensity compared to a PLED employing a PEDOT:PSS interlayer.

Abstract:We demonstrate highly flexible and efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) using an ultra-smooth NAN anode. A template-stripping process was employed to create an ultra-smooth NAN anode on a photopolymer substrate. The flexible OLEDs obtained by this method maintained good electroluminescent properties and mechanical stability after bending. The efficiency of the flexible OLEDs was improved by 30.6% compared with conventional OLEDs deposited on PET/ITO substrate due to the enhanced hole injection from the ultra-smooth anode.
