Abstract:A reduced graphene oxide/TiO2 (RGO/TiO2) blocking layer in the photoanode of a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) was fabricated in a simple way by depositing a RGO/TiO2 paste onto a FTO substrate through screen printing method. The RGO content in the RGO/TiO2 blocking layer was optimized for better DSSC performance. The effect of the RGO/TiO2 blocking layer on the performance of the DSSC was examined based on the electrochemical impedance spectral analysis, the photocurrent-voltage measurement, and the open-circuit voltage decay technology. After the introduction of RGO/TiO2 blocking layer in the photoanode, direct contact between the electrolyte and the FTO glass surface was prevented. The electron transfer from the TiO2 film to the FTO glass substrate was thus improved, the charge recombination rate suppressed, the electron transport rate enhanced, and the electron collection efficiency increased, resulting in higher current density. At the best level of RGO in the composite blocking layer, the DSSC has an energy conversion efficiency (η) of 7.48% with a Jsc of 15.29 mA cm−2, a Voc of 0.74 V and a FF of 0.66, indicating a 29% and a 30% increase in Jsc and η, respectively, compared to that of a DSSC based on pure TiO2 photoanode, which exhibits a η value of 5.76% with a Jsc of 11.85mAcm−2, a Voc of 0.74V, and a FF of 0.66. The introduction of the RGO/TiO2 blocking layer in the photoanode could really enhance the efficiency of DSSC by preventing the direct contact between the electrolyte and the FTO glass surface.

Abstract:TiO2/reduced graphene oxide (TiO2/rGO) composite has been widely exploited as the photoanode material for high efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is limited due to the charge recombination between the rGO and electrolyte. In this paper, we incorporate 5.5 wt% layered structure graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and 0.25 wt% rGO into TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) film to form a triple-component TiO2/rGO/g-C3N4 (TGC) photoanode for DSSCs. The TGC photoanode significantly increased the dye absorption and thus to improve the light harvesting efficiency. Furthermore, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of the DSSCs based on TGC photoanode demonstrates that the incorporation of the rGO and g-C3N4 into TiO2 effectively accelerates the electron transfer and reduces the charge recombination. As a result, the DSSCs based on TGC film show PCE of 5.83%, enhanced by 50.1% compared with that of pure TiO2 photoanodes. This result strongly suggests a facile strategy to improve the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted a lot of attention because of its unique optical, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. In this study, the effect of graphene on the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated by constructing TiO2 photoanodes with a gradient graphene content. After the construction of photoanodes with a gradient graphene content, the DSSCs displayed a higher dye loading amount, lower internal resistances, lower electron recombination rate and faster electron transport rate, which resulted in high open circuit voltage and current density. Under the optimum conditions, the DSSC exhibited a V-oc of 0.72 V, a J(sc) of 17.11 mA cm(-2), a FF of 0.63, and an energy conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.71%, indicating a 41% increase in eta than that of the DSSC based on a pure TiO2 photoanode, which gives a V-oc of 0.69 V, a J(sc) of 12.63 mA cm(-2), a FF of 0.62, and an h value of 5.45%. The construction of TiO2 photoanodes with a gradient graphene content could really enhance the efficiency of DSSCs by improving the dye loading amount and enhancing the electron bridge effect of graphene from TiO2 to the FTO, which lowered the electron recombination rate and accelerated the electron transport rate.
Improved Performance of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells Using Cu-doped TiO2 As Photoanode Materials: Band Edge Movement Study by Spectroelectrochemistry

Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared and used as semiconductor materials of photoanode to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). UV–Vis spectroscopy and variable temperature spectroelectrochemistry study are used to characterize the influence of copper dopant with different concentrations on the band gap energies of TiO2 nanoparticles. The prepared Cu-doped TiO2 semiconductor has avoided the formation of CuO during hydrothermal process and lowered the conduction band position of TiO2, which contribute to increase the short circuit current density of DSSCs. At the optimum Cu concentration of 1.0at.%, the short circuit current density increased from 12.54 to 14.98mAcm−2, full sun solar power conversion efficiencies increased from 5.58% up to 6.71% as compared to the blank DSSC. This showed that the presence of copper in DSSCs leads to improvements of up to 20% in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.
Facile Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide As an Efficient Counter Electrode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-RGO) nanosheet was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electrode microscopy. After being deposited as counter electrode film for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), it is found that the synthesized N-RGO nanosheet has smaller charge-transfer resistance and better electrocatalytic activity towards reduction of triiodide than the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheet. Consequently, the DSSCs based on the N-RGO counter electrode achieve an energy conversion efficiency of 4.26%, which is higher than that of the RGO counter electrode (2.85%) prepared under the same conditions, and comparable to the value (5.21%) obtained with the Pt counter electrode as a reference. This N-RGO counter electrode offers the advantages of not only saving the cost of Pt itself but also simplifying the process of counter electrode preparation. Therefore, an inexpensive N-RGO nanosheet is a promising counter electrode material to replace noble metal Pt.

Abstract:Enhanced photovoltaic performance of a DSSC using graphene-TiO2 photoelectrodes prepared by our recent in situ simultaneous reduction-hydrolysis technique (Adv. Funct. Mater., 2012, DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201202349, in press) was achieved. The DSSCs based on the G-TiO2 nanocomposites improved their overall energy conversion efficiency to 7.1%. The results prove that the promoting effect of graphene is strongly dependent on its content; namely, the efficiency of DSSCs increases and then decreases with increasing graphene content in TiO2-graphene composites. Excessive graphene in the nanocomposite leads to a decrease of the light harvest of dye molecules and thus a negative effect on the power conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Abstract:A hybrid photoanode material consisting of reduced graphene oxide–anatase titanium dioxide (rGO–anatase TiO2) nano-composite particles was produced by mixing an rGO solution into a TiO2 solution. The hybrid particles were then electrophoretically deposited (EPD) onto a fluorine-doped tin oxide (F:SnO2) coated (FTO) glass substrate to form the novel photoanode structure for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Abstract:Here we report the fabrication of highly transparent graphene oxide (GO) reinforced TiO2 nanocomposite thin film and demonstrate that it enhances the power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) when used as photoanode. TiO2-GO nanocomposite thin films with varying GO concentrations are deposited on top of the fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrate by easy, cost-effective sol-gel spin coating technique. Microstructural and optical characterizations confirm the formation of highly transparent, uniform nanocomposite thin films comprised of rutile phase of TiO2 nanoparticles. The estimated optical band gap of pristine TiO2 is ~3.34 eV which decreased slightly with GO concentrations. The nanocomposite films are used as photoanode of a basic DSSC structure which has been fabricated using commercially available N3 dye as photosensitizers, conventional iodine solution (I-/IM3+) as electrolyte and FTO-coated glass as counter electrode. The current-voltage characteristics of DSSC measured under illumination of 1 SUN AM1.5 solar spectrum show significant enhancement of short circuit current density (Jsc) and power conversion efficiency (η) with GO concentration in TiO2 photoanode which is attributed to the less recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and better transport facilitated by conduction GO network.
An investigation on surface modified TiO2 incorporated with graphene oxide for dye-sensitized solar cell

Abstract:In the present study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were amine functionalized by using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) for the incorporation with graphene oxide (GO) to resolve the rapid agglomeration of nanoparticles. The zeta potentiometer revealed a significant increment of surface charge from 8.31 mV (untreated) to 34.5 mV (treated) for the TiO2 nanoparticles which promotes strong electrostatic attraction with GO. Electrophoretic deposition technique was then employed for the fabrication of the photoanodes by generating an electric field for the transportation of the composite material. This work aimed to find the optimum loading content of GO-TiO2 for a higher photoconversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Among the samples, the sample loaded with 0.5 g TiO2 showed the lowest emission peak intensity (Raman PL) which indicates efficient trapping of photogenerated electrons. By applying the Kubelka-Munk (K-M) expression, the absorbance spectra were converted into Tauc plots through which the aforementioned sample was found to exhibit a band gap energy of 2.91 eV (suitable for light absorption in the visible light region). The electron transfer efficiency for the sample loaded with 0.5 g TiO2 was relatively higher than the other samples in the DSSCs yielding a photoconversion efficiency of 6.86% because of the effective reduction in electron recombination.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the potential for increasing the efficiency of the Dye sensitized solar cells through the incorporation of graphene oxide into the titanium dioxide matrix. The presence of defects was observed by Raman spectra. The structural properties and crystallite size of TiO 2 , GO, and GO/TiO 2 composite were investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis, whereas the changes in morphology of graphene oxide and GO/TiO 2 were assessed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The presence of functional groups were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. UV-Visible spectroscopy revealed a reduction in optical bandgap from 3.25 eV for TiO 2 to 2.89 eV for GO/TiO 2 and optical conductivity were observed increasing from 5.49 × 10 7 S/cm to 1.19 × 10 8 S/cm. The efficiency of the fabricated DSSCs was determined through I-V measurement, which showed that the addition of 0.2 wt% of graphene oxide in TiO 2 significantly increased the short-circuit current from 0.38 milliampere to 0.75 milliampere, fill factor from 0.71 to 0.82, resulting in a substantial efficiency improvement from 3.99% to 9.11%.

Abstract:This study investigated the modification of TiO 2 photoanodes using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to enhance electron transport channels and prevent recombination processes, thereby improving the photovoltaic performance. Through the ultraviolet (UV)-assisted photoreduction of GO on TiO 2 coated on a fluoride tin oxide substrate (FTO|TiO 2 ), we demonstrated the successful integration of rGO. This was evidenced by the increased Csp 2 content observed during X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and reduced photogenerated electron–hole recombination observed during photoluminescence spectroscopy. The incorporation of rGO significantly improved the photocurrent density and power conversion efficiency (PCE). A 12 % increase was observed in the PCE, which reached 8.5 % when the UV irradiation time was optimized from 10 to 15 min compared with the 7.57 % in the standard cell (rGO-0 min). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the optimized rGO content enhanced the electron lifetime and recombination resistance, attributable to the high conductivity and large specific surface area of rGO. DFT simulation further elucidated how improved charge separation and transport mechanisms of TiO 2 –rGO heterojunction. This study highlights the potential of TiO 2 –rGO materials as promising electrodes for improving the efficiency, capacity, and stability of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Improved properties of dye-sensitized solar cells by incorporation of graphene into the photoelectrodes

Abstract:A series of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with different graphene-P25 (G-P25) photoelectrodes were prepared by a ball milling method. The influences of graphene on the structures and performance of G-P25 cells were studied. Studies indicated that the rutile contents in G-P25 photoelectrodes increased with increasing graphene-oxide (GO) additions and reached the maximum value at GO addition of 4.5ml. And with the increase of GO additions, the porosity of the G-P25 photoelectrodes, the interface recombination resistances, and the short current densities increased. When the GO addition was 4.5ml, the G-P25 cells showed the best performance with the largest interface recombination resistance of 15.12Ω and the largest photoelectric conversion efficiency of 5.09%, which was remarkably higher than those of pure P25 DSSC. Since the tendency of the photoelectric conversion efficiency varying with the GO additions was in consistence with that of the rutile contents, the enhancement of the photoelectric conversion properties of the G-P25 DSSCs was preliminary attributed to the increase of the rutile contents and the porosity in the photoelectrodes due to graphene adding.

Abstract:This study aimed to address the need for alternative materials in the anode layer to enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The synthesis of titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide (TiO 2 /rGO) was carried out using the response surface methodology by face central composite design (RSM/FCC). This method allowed us to systematically evaluate the influence of two key factors, namely the weight percentage of precursor graphene oxide (GO wt%) and the L-ascorbic acid ratio, | on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs. Our research is significant because it explores the synthesis of TiO 2 /rGO as a novel material for the anode layer in DSSCs. This material holds promise for improving device performance due to its unique properties, such as enhanced charge transport and light harvesting capabilities. Additionally, TiO 2 /rGO can serve multiple functions within the DSSCs device, acting not only as a charge transport layer but also potentially as a light scattering layer to increase photon absorption. The statistical analysis revealed that the GO wt% had a more significant influence on PCE compared to the L-ascorbic acid ratio. Furthermore, our simulation results demonstrated high validity and accuracy, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9988 and a residual standard error of less than 5%. The optimized DSSCs-based TiO 2 /rGO anode achieved a remarkable PCE of 7.12%, representing a 29% improvement compared to the pure TiO 2 -based DSSCs anode. In summary, our study highlights the importance of synthesizing TiO 2 /rGO as a novel material for the anode layer in DSSCs and demonstrates its potential for significantly enhancing device performance. This study emphasizes these key points more prominently in the abstract to better convey the novelty and significance of our findings.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nano-powder is synthesized by the modified Hummer's method, and further thin films are deposited by using the water solution of GO through spin-coating. These films are thermally reduced along with the synthesized GO nano-powder at 50 to 200 °C in a high vacuum. Microstructural, electrical, and optical properties are expectedly controlled by thermal reduction. The electronic properties of GO are investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. The reduction is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The work function and band gap of GO are tuned with the thermal reduction. The changes in properties of GO are not linear, and anomalous changes are observed for the reduction around 150 °C. Pristine and reduced GO nano-powder is incorporated into TiO2 paste to be the photoanode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It is observed that the performance of the fabricated cells is significantly enhanced for the GO reduced at 150 °C, and the cell exhibited a significant increment of ∼23% for the power conversion efficiency in comparison to DSSC based on an unmodified TiO2 photoanode.

Abstract:Graphene has been used to enhance conversion efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) through increased electronic transportation. Introduction of graphene into DSSC is realized through reduction of graphene oxide (GO) to reduced graphene or RGO in TiO2 nanoparticles in solution. Chemical and hydrothermal reactions are two commonly used avenues. In the chemical route, toxic hydrazine and its derivatives are the typical reducing agent. Hydrothermal process is not toxic but requires prolonged heating. In this study, we mix flakes of GO with TiO2 nanoparticles and use vitamin C to realize the reduction at room temperature. The RGO–TiO2 composite films are then used as photoanode in DSSC. A conversion efficiency of 30% increase (to 7.89%) is obtained as compared to that of the pure TiO2 photoanode.

Abstract:Close-packed graphene suffers from a low surface area, which limits its electrocatalytic activity as the counter electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We report herein the synthesis of a porous graphene/SiO2 nanocomposite converted from graphene oxide mixed with SiO2 nanoparticles (similar to 12 nm) through facile hydrazine hydrate reduction. Graphene and graphene/SiO2 films prepared by drop-casting the suspensions without organic binder or surfactant onto the conductive glass substrates at room temperature without heat treatment have been applied directly as counter electrodes in DSSCs. As compared to the nonporous graphene film, the porous graphene/SiO2 composite film demonstrates much better electrocatalytic performance for the reduction of triiodide in DSSCs due to the remarkably enhanced surface area. As a consequence, the incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles in the graphene film improves the fill factor and power conversion efficiency by 65% and 69%, respectively. With a 2.5 mu m-thick graphene/SiO2 composite film as the counter electrode, the power conversion efficiency of the DSSC achieves 6.82%, which is comparable to that for the DSSC with a Pt counter electrode.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has emerged as an excellent interfacial material for improvising the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Herein, we have applied rGO as interfacial layers between a fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrate and semiconducting material TiO2 in a photoanode of a DSSC which showed an unusual enhancement in generating a photocurrent in comparison to the control (without rGO layers). An electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study was performed to gain the mechanistic insights into such a remarkable enhancement of photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) which revealed improved charge transfer and suppressed charge recombination due to high-electrical conductivity and probably more negative work function of our rGO material compared to the bare TiO2 photoanode.

Abstract:Herein, titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide (TiO2/rGO) composite material was synthesized using the co-precipitation method to investigate reducing agents. The as-prepared TiO2/rGO composite material was employed to fabricate photoanode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Experimental results showed that the reducing agents were essential in reducing GO into rGO. Still, they also had a significant influence on the bonding of rGO with TiO2, leading to the narrowing of band-gap energy photoanode material and enhancement of DSSCs performance. The high performance was recognized for DSSCs using ascorbic acid (6.94 %), hydrazine (7.08 %), and sodium borohydride (7.17 %), while low counterpart was affirmed to sodium citrate (5.54 %), and d-glucose (4.63 %) in comparison with pure TiO2 (6.82 %). Therefore, the findings from this research are highly expected to pave the way for optimizing co-precipitation synthesis of TiO2/rGO composite based on the favorable reducing agents, ultimately applying for the fabrication of DSSCs commercially.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using photoanodes made from graphene–TiO2 nanocomposites. The dependence of the size of graphene sheets on the cell performance was investigated. The experimental results indicated that cells loaded with the smaller graphene sheets yielded larger enhancement. The smaller graphene sheets improved the dye adsorption, leading to higher conversion efficiency. The DSSC incorporated with graphene sheets of 184nm exhibited the largest enhancement in efficiency (∼49%) as compared to the cell without graphene.

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of the graphene content (0 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, 0.3 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 0.7 wt.%) on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) containing TiO₂/graphene photoanodes. These photoanodes were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV)-visible (Vis) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), photoluminescence (PL), and photoelectric conversion efficiency tests. The optimal conditions were obtained by adding 0.3 wt.% graphene to the TiO₂ photoanode. The conversion efficiency of this photoanode was 3.6 times higher than that of a pure TiO₂ photoanode under simulated 100 mW/cm₂ AM 1.5 light. This was attributed to its improved electron transfer ability, light absorption properties, and efficient dye adsorption capacity.
