Abstract:The orientation of the crystallographic direction of a selforganized 3D soft lattice is “tamed” and tailored facilely by light irradiation, as described by Yan-Qing Lu, Guoqiang Li, Quan Li, and co-workers in article number 1703165. The designed photoalignment technique enables diverse micropatterning of the crystallographic direction of the cubic superstructure that can be readily erased and rewritten ondemand by light. The potential of the stimuli-responsive micropatterns is demonstrated in advanced reflective photonic applications.

Abstract:We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposition method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems.

Abstract:Adding external, dynamic control to self-organized superstructures with desired functionalities is an important leap necessary in leveraging the fascinating molecular systems for applications. Here, the new light-driven chiral molecular switch and upconversion nanoparticles, doped in a liquid crystal media, were able to self-organize into an optically tunable helical superstructure. The resulting nanoparticle impregnated helical superstructure was found to exhibit unprecedented reversible near-infrared (NIR) light-guided tunable behavior only by modulating the excitation power density of a continuous-wave NIR laser (980 nm). Upon irradiation by the NIR laser at the high power density, the reflection wavelength of the photonic superstructure red-shifted, whereas its reverse process occurred upon irradiation by the same laser but with the lower power density. Furthermore, reversible dynamic NIR-light-driven red, green, and blue reflections in a single thin film, achieved only by varying the power density of the NIR light, were for the first time demonstrated.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals are microstructures with quadratic nonlinearity (chi((2))) that have been extensively used for the generation and control of coherent light at new frequencies. Thanks to the recent invention of 3D chi((2))-nonlinearity engineering techniques using femtosecond laser pulses, studies of intense light interaction with 3D nonlinear photonic crystals are now experimentally feasible. Here we review the latest research advances in nonlinear photonic crystals, focusing especially on the fabrication, characterization, and application of 3D structures. We also discuss the future development of 3D nonlinear photonic crystals with properties and functionalities that are either difficult or virtually impossible to achieve with lower dimensional structures. Abstract:Abstract Two-photon excited near-infrared fluorescence materials have garnered considerable attention because of their superior optical penetration, higher spatial resolution, and lower optical scattering compared with other optical materials. Herein, a convenient and efficient supramolecular approach is used to synthesize a two-photon excited near-infrared emissive co-crystalline material. A naphthalenediimide-based triangular macrocycle and coronene form selectively two co-crystals. The triangle-shaped co-crystal emits deep-red fluorescence, while the quadrangle-shaped co-crystal displays deep-red and near-infrared emission centered on 668 nm, which represents a 162 nm red-shift compared with its precursors. Benefiting from intermolecular charge transfer interactions, the two co-crystals possess higher calculated two-photon absorption cross-sections than those of their individual constituents. Their two-photon absorption bands reach into the NIR-II region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The quadrangle-shaped co-crystal constitutes a unique material that exhibits two-photon absorption and near-infrared emission simultaneously. This co-crystallization strategy holds considerable promise for the future design and synthesis of more advanced optical materials.

Abstract:Nonlinear frequency conversion via three-dimensional (3D) quasi-phase matching (QPM) process is experimentally realized based on a Ba0.77Ca0.23TiO3 (BCT) crystal. The ferroelectric domains in BCT crystal are observed, and the results reveal that the antiparallel domains distribute in three dimensions and can provide 3D reciprocal lattice vectors for QPM processes. Broadband petal-like second-harmonic patterns are achieved, which are well consistent with the theoretical quasi-cubic model of 3D nonlinear photonic crystals. Our work not only promotes the development of QPM technique but also builds a platform for 3D nonlinear optics and quantum optics.

Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulses are utilized for fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals based on a multiphoton absorption process. The basic idea is, when a femtosecond laser pulse is tightly focused into some transparent media, a submicrometer hole will be generated due to microexplosion. By arraying these holes the same way as atoms in general solid crystals, 3D photonic lattices are achieved. Pronounced photonic bandgap effect shows that this technique is promising for tailoring arbitrary-lattice photonic crystals.

Abstract:Photonic crystals1,2,3 offer unprecedented opportunities for miniaturization and integration of optical devices. They also exhibit a variety of new physical phenomena, including suppression or enhancement of spontaneous emission, low-threshold lasing, and quantum information processing4. Various techniques for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals—such as silicon micromachining5, wafer fusion bonding6, holographic lithography7, self-assembly8,9, angled-etching10, micromanipulation11, glancing-angle deposition12 and auto-cloning13,14—have been proposed and demonstrated with different levels of success. However, a critical step towards the fabrication of functional 3D devices, that is, the incorporation of microcavities or waveguides in a controllable way, has not been achieved at optical wavelengths. Here we present the fabrication of 3D photonic crystals that are particularly suited for optical device integration using a lithographic layer-by-layer approach15. Point-defect microcavities are introduced during the fabrication process and optical measurements show they have resonant signatures around telecommunications wavelengths (1.3–1.5 µm). Measurements of reflectance and transmittance at near-infrared are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:Mesocrystals introduce high-level orders, such as chirality, topology, and hierarchy to the crystallography, and thus bring collective and emergent properties beyond traditional crystals. Orthogonally modulating the multiple degrees of light is highly pursued to fully explore the intrinsic multidimensional and large-scale parallel processing capability of photon informatics. Unfortunately, it is unachievable with traditional light-matter interaction systems. Here, the multi-degree light modulation is realized based on the hierarchical architecture of a soft mesocrystal. High-quality monodomains of both blue phase I and blue phase II are formed via regulating the assembly of liquid crystals by photoalignment anchoring and electricity. The mapping relationship between optical freedoms (the spin, wavelength, and geometric phase of light) and hierarchical structures (the chirality of helix, lattice constant, and the azimuthal orientation of cubic lattices) is established. Omnidirectional spatial phase modulation with spin and full color selectivity is demonstrated. Based on the multi-degree light modulation, 3D and wavelength-selective orbital angular momentum generation as well as multichannel color holographic display are presented. This work extends the fundamental understanding of blue phase mesocrystals and provides a promising strategy for large-scale parallel and multi-degree light modulation that may be utilized in vital fields, such as supercomputing, optical communications, and virtual/augmented realities.

Abstract:We have demonstrated three-dimensional optical data storage in a novel photochromic material with two-photon excitation. The data are read out with a homemade confocal fluorescence microscope combined with the three-dimensional writing system. Since the degree of destruction is closely related with the total dwell time of the readout laser, we try to read out the data through an optimization among the doped concentration of photochromic material of the PMMA film, the readout power, and the dwell time of the laser at each data bit. Using the optimized readout condition, it is possible to achieve 107 readout cycles with very little erasure of the data at the scanning speed of a 50× CD driver.

Abstract:The performance of many optical devices based on frequency conversion critically depends on spatial modulation of the nonlinear optical response of materials. This modulation ensures efficient energy exchange between optical waves at different frequencies via quasi-phase matching1. In general, quasi-phase-matching structures, also known as nonlinear photonic crystals2–4, offer a variety of properties and functionalities that cannot be obtained in uniform nonlinear crystals5–9. So far, nonlinear photonic crystals have been restricted to one- or two-dimensional geometries owing to a lack of fabrication technologies capable of three-dimensional (3D) nonlinearity engineering. Here, we provide an experimental example of a 3D nonlinear photonic crystal, fabricated in ferroelectric barium calcium titanate, by applying an ultrafast light domain inversion approach. The resulting full flexibility of 3D nonlinearity modulation enables phase matching of nonlinear processes along an arbitrary direction, thereby removing constraints imposed by low-dimensional structures.

Abstract:Materials whose luminescence can be switched by optical stimulation drive technologies ranging from superresolution imaging1-4, nanophotonics5, and optical data storage6-8, to targeted pharmacology, optogenetics, and chemical reactivity9. These photoswitchable probes, including organic fluorophores and proteins, are prone to photodegradation, and often require phototoxic doses of ultraviolet (UV) or visible light. Colloidal inorganic nanoparticles have significant stability advantages over existing photoswitchable materials, but the ability to switch emission bidirectionally, particularly with NIR light, has not been reported with nanoparticles. Here, we present 2-way, near-infrared (NIR) photoswitching of avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs), showing full optical control of upconverted emission using phototriggers in the NIR-I and NIR-II spectral regions useful for subsurface imaging. Employing single-step photodarkening10-13 and photobrightening12,14-18, we demonstrate indefinite photoswitching of individual nanoparticles (>1000 cycles over 7 h) in ambient or aqueous conditions without measurable photodegradation. Critical steps of the photoswitching mechanism are elucidated by modeling and by measuring the photon avalanche properties of single ANPs in both bright and dark states. Unlimited, reversible photoswitching of ANPs enables indefinitely rewritable 2D and 3D multi-level optical patterning of ANPs, as well as optical nanoscopy with sub-Å localization superresolution that allows us to distinguish individual ANPs within tightly packed clusters.

Abstract:We report a 310-fold upconversion luminescence enhancement, and 8-fold decay rate enhancement of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ codoped nanocrystals using a 3D plasmonic nanoantenna array. The enhancement is two orders of magnitude larger than previously reported results.

Abstract:We report on the first demonstration of the coupling of fully confined electrons and photons using a combination of three-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavities and quantum dots. The three dimensional photonic crystals were assembled by stacking planar components using a sophisticated micromanipulation technique. Point defects, containing embedded quantum dots, were introduced into the photonic crystals as active sites. By measuring the photoluminescence spectra of the assembly, the process by which light emitted from the quantum dots is coupled to the defect modes of a three dimensional photonic crystal was demonstrated for the first time. The characteristics of the sharp emission peaks agreed well with numerical simulations, and these were confirmed to be resonant modes by polarization measurements. The highest quality factor (Q-factor) for three dimensional photonic crystals (2,300) was achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a continuously tunable photonic crystal with several picoseconds response, which is fabricated through a self-assembly formation method of polystyrene spheres. The large optical nonlinearity originates from the delocalization of the conjugated pi-electron along polymer chains. The pump and probe scheme is adopted to measure the transmission changes based on the optical Kerr effect. The dynamic shift of the photonic band gap is studied. It is found that the band gap shifts about 13 nm when the input peak intensity is 40.4 GW/cm(2), which is in agreement with the theoretical predictions. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:<p>Nonlinear optical microscopy has become a powerful tool in bioimaging research due to its unique capabilities of deep optical sectioning, high‐spatial‐resolution imaging, and 3D reconstruction of biological specimens. Developing organic fluorescent probes with strong nonlinear optical effects, in particular third‐harmonic generation (THG), is promising for exploiting nonlinear microscopic imaging for biomedical applications. Herein, a simple method for preparing organic nanocrystals based on an aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) luminogen (DCCN) with bright near‐infrared emission is successfully demonstrated. Aggregation‐induced nonlinear optical effects, including two‐photon fluorescence (2PF), three‐photon fluorescence (3PF), and THG, of DCCN are observed in nanoparticles, especially for crystalline nanoparticles. The nanocrystals of DCCN are successfully applied for 2PF microscopy at 1040 nm NIR‐II excitation and THG microscopy at 1560 nm NIR‐II excitation, respectively, to reconstruct the 3D vasculature of the mouse cerebral vasculature. Impressively, the THG microscopy provides much higher spatial resolution and brightness than the 2PF microscopy and can visualize small vessels with diameters of ≈2.7 µm at the deepest depth of 800 µm in a mouse brain. Thus, this is expected to inspire new insights into the development of advanced AIE materials with multiple nonlinearity, in particular THG, for multimodal nonlinear optical microscopy.</p>

Near-infrared Emitting Colloidal Solution of Nanocrystals for Multi-Band Optical Amplification

Abstract:We report on a strategy to realize simultaneous and efficient multi-band near-infrared (NIR) emission from Pr3+, Tm3+ and Er3+ that covers almost the entire optical communication wavelength region (from 0 to U band) by employing a nanocrystal-solvent colloidal system. The NIR emission spectra and fluorescent decay curves of different colloidal systems are investigated and compared. The results indicated that interaction among different RE ions that lead to quenching of the NIR emission could be effectively inhibited by solutions containing NCs doped with three different ion pairs (Yb3+-Pr3+, Yb3+-Tm3+ and Yb3+-Er3+) separately. The mechanism of this phenomenon is also discussed. This strategy may have potential applications in multi-band optical amplifiers for the optical communication window. Abstract:Photonic crystals are utilized in many noteworthy applications like optical communications, light flow control, and quantum optics. Photonic crystal with nanoscale structure is important for the manipulation of light propagation in visible and near-infrared range. Herein, we propose a novel multi beam lithography method to fabricate photonic crystal with nanoscale structure without cracking. Using multi-beam ultrafast laser processing and etching, parallel channels with subwavelength gap are obtained in yttrium aluminum garnet crystal. Combining optical simulation based on Debye diffraction, we experimentally show the gap width of parallel channels can be controlled at nanoscale by changing phase holograms. With the superimposed phase hologram designing, functional structures of complicated channel arrays distribution can be created in crystal. Optical gratings of different periods are fabricated, which can diffract incident light in particular ways. This approach can efficiently manufacture nanostructures with controllable gap, and offer an alternative to the fabrication of complex photonic crystal for integrated photonics applications.
