Abstract:Upconversion nanophosphor is attracting worldwide interests owing to its unique optical properties and great application potentials. However, it is still a great challenge to effectively improve the efficiency/strength of upconversion nanophosphor. Plasmonic modulation is a promising way to solve this bottleneck. In this work, we present a simple yet versatile concept on magnifying upconversion luminescence of NaYF4:Yb(3+), Er(3+) nanocrystals through local field manipulation of surface plasmon. Gold nanorods were directionally assembled into a vertically aligned monolayer supercrystals over large areas. The FDTD simulation indicates that the electromagnetic field strength |E|(2) can be improved about 113 folds at the hot spots of monolayer supercrystals. After optimization, on the surface of the vertically aligned monolayer supercrystals, the overall upconversion luminescence intensity of NaYF4:Yb(3+), Er(3+) under 980 nm excitation was improved more than 35 fold.

Abstract:By using silver nanoplatelets with a widely tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and their corresponding local field enhancement, here we show large manipulation of plasmonic enhanced upconversion in NaYF4:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanocrystals at the single particle level. In particular, we show that when the plasmonic resonance of silver nanolplatelets is tuned to 656 nm, matching the emission wavelength, an upconversion enhancement factor ~5 is obtained. However, when the plasmonic resonance is tuned to 980 nm, matching the nanocrystal absorption wavelength, we achieve an enhancement factor of ~22 folds. The precise geometric arrangement between fluorescent nanoparticles and silver nanoplatelets allows us to make, for the first time, a comparative analysis between experimental results and numerical simulations, yielding a quantitative agreement at the single particle level. Such a comparison lays the foundations for a rational design of hybrid metal-fluorescent nanocrystals to harness the upconversion enhancement for biosensing and light harvesting applications.
Upconversion Emission Enhancement of NaYF4:Yb,Er Nanoparticles by Coupling Silver Nanoparticle Plasmons and Photonic Crystal Effects

Abstract:Metal nanoparticle plasmons or the photonic crystal effect are being widely used to modify luminescence properties of materials. However, coupling of surface plasmons with photonic crystals are seldom reported for enhancing luminescence of materials. In this paper, a new method for upconversion emission enhancement of rare-earth doped nanoparticles is reported, attributed to the coupling of surface plasmons with photonic band gap effects. Opal/Ag hybrid substrates were prepared by depositing Ag nanoparticles on the top layer of opals by magnetron sputtering. The selective enhancement of red or green upconversion emission of NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles on the opal/Ag hybrid substrates is attributed to the coupling effect of surface plasmons and Bragg reflection of the photonic band gap. In addition, the upconversion emission enhancement of NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles on the opal/Ag hybrid substrate is attributed to the excitation enhancement was obtained when the excitation light wavelengths overlap with the photonic band gaps of opal/Ag hybrid substrates. We believe that these enhancement effects based on the coupling of metal nanoparticles with the photonic band gap could be extended to other light-emitting materials, which may result in a new generation of lighting devices.
Plasmonically Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence via Holographically Formed Silver Nanogratings

Abstract:Greatly enhanced upconversion luminescence was demonstrated by integrating the core-shell upconversion nanorods with the Ag nanogratings. Both the Ag nanogratings and upconversion nanorods were fabricated/synthesized in a facile, cost-effective, high-throughput way. Experimental results showed that the upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ in the core-shell upconversion nanorods can be well tuned and enhanced by changing the shell thickness and the period of the Ag nanograting. The underlying physical mechanism for the upconversion luminescence enhancement was attributed to the plasmonically enhanced near infrared broadband absorption of the periodic Ag nanograting and the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanocrystals. The maximum enhanced factors of 523 nm, 544 nm (green emission), and 658 nm (red emission) of Er3+ ions excited at 980 nm are 3.8-, 5.5-, and 4.6-folds, respectively. Our fabrication approach and results suggest that such a simple integration is potentially useful for biosensing/imaging and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:The upconversion luminescence (UCL) enhancement based on the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of noble metals is a promising way to improve UCL efficiency. However, it is still a challenge to achieve stable and effective UCL enhancement. Here, we present the preparation of the porous Ag/YVO4:Yb3+, Er3+ composite film via a simple double annealing method. It is exciting to observe that a maximum 36-fold (2H11/2–4I15/2) and 30-fold (4S3/2–4I15/2) UCL enhancement in the porous Ag/YVO4:Yb3+, Er3+ composite film, attributed to the effective coupling between SPR and the excitation light by adjusting the SPR peak to the excitation wavelength, controlling the effective coupling distance and improving the scattering–absorption ratio. Furthermore, the enhancement factor strongly depended on the excitation power and the Er3+ concentration.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different concentrations of Gd3+ ions are prepared via a hydrothermal method. With increasing Gd3+ dopant, up-conversion (UC) emission is gradually enhanced and the strongest UC emission is improved by 50-fold for a sample with 15% Gd3+ doping compared with the one without Gd3+ incorporation. However, further increasing the Gd3+ dopant causes the reduction of UC emission which can be ascribed to the increased surface state recombination. Moreover, the self-assembly technique is used to fabricate Au nanosphere arrays with diameters of 300 nm to enhance the UC luminescence. It is found that the luminescence intensity is increased by 2-fold due to the surface plasmon resonance effect which is confirmed by the absorption spectra.

Abstract:Enhanced Luminescence of Lanthanide Downconversion Nanoparticles The study by Fang Xie and co‐workers (see article number 240660) demonstrates remarkable downconversion luminescence enhancement in the NIR‐II window by integrating Ce3+ ions into NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles and using silver hole‐cap nanoarrays (Ag‐HCNAs). This combined strategy achieves over two orders of magnitude enhancement through optimized doping and plasmonic effects. Insights from 3D FDTD simulations and time‐resolved measurements reveal significant electric field enhancements and increased radiative decay rates, offering promising advancements for biosensing and bioimaging applications in the NIR‐II region.

Abstract:Upconversion, converting two or more photons into a higher energy photon, has attracted tremendous interest for the wide applications ranging from science to engineering, yet always suffered from the shortcoming of low efficiency. We propose and demonstrate an approach to improve the upconversion efficiency by multi-wavelength excitation in Er3+ doped NaYF4 nanoparticles. Compared to the sum of emission intensities excited by two single-wavelength (790nm and 1520nm) separately, the green and red emissions from NaYF4: 1%Er nanoparticles excited by two-wavelength simultaneously are enhanced by a factor of 3.05 and 1.53, respectively. Ground state absorption and excited state absorption are considered to be the microscopic mechanism of the observed phenomenon. Our conception of improving the upconversion luminescence with multi-wavelength excitation might be a potential solution for the efficient ulilization of near infrared light by solar cells.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped upconversion luminescence is important for display and imaging field due to its narrow band, multicolor, long lifetime and high stability. However, low quantum yield of upconversion energy transfer, weak excited states absorption and slow spontaneous radiation rates lead to weak upconversion luminescence, which may dramatically limit the practical application of upconversion nanoparticles. Here, we report a metal-sheet-shaped plasmonic nanocavity consisting of gold and silver micro-sheets. It is found that the upconversion processes (including quantum yield of energy transfer, excited states absorption and spontaneous radiation rates) were enhanced by strong local electromagnetic field of the plasmonic nanocavity when RE3+ nanoparticles were filled in the plasmonic nanocavity. The significant enhancement of the luminescence and clear directional radiation were observed under 980 nm laser excitation. By adjusting the nanogap distance of the plasmonic nanocavity, we achieved a 75-fold enhancement in 654 nm emission. Benefiting from the plasmonic nanocavity, the upconversion luminescence exhibited a directional emission, which indicates the plasmonic near-field excitation contributed to the luminescence enhancement. These findings provide a candidate for ring light source and bio-imaging application.

Abstract:Infrared-to-visible upconversion luminescence spectra are investigated in Li+ and Er3+ codoped Y2O3 nanocrystals. By introducing Li+ ions, the upconverted emission intensity is found to be greatly enhanced when compared with the nanocrystals with the Li+ absent. The cause of the enhancement is believed to be the modification of the local symmetry of the Er3+ ion, which increases the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ion, and the homogeneous distribution of Er3+. While in some other Er3+ doped oxides, such as ZnO, ZrO2, etc., the upconversion intensity of Er3+ ions could also be greatly increased by doping Li+.

Abstract:In the study, we present the significant enhancement of the upconversion luminescence by taking advantage of long-range surface plasmon resonance mode. Compared with the reflection enhanced upconversion luminescence of Ag film, the intensity of upconversion luminescence enhanced by long-range surface plasmon resonance mode is improved 100 times. Additionally, the finite-difference time-domain simulation indicates that the incident light energy can concentrate in the upconversion nanoparticles doped dielectric layer at the long-range surface plasmon resonance mode, which the maximum electric field enhancement factor |E|2/|E0|2 can reach to 58. The experimental result shows that the upconversion luminescence enhancement is related to the thickness of doped Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) layer. Furthermore, due to the excited upconversion luminescence having high directionality, it is shown that the strong upconversion luminescence could be received at the specific angle.

Abstract:Four-layered plasmonic structures of glass/Au/TiO2/NaYF4:Yb, Er, Gd nanorods were fabricated and tremendous improvement in upconversion luminescence (UCL) was observed under infrared 980 nm excitation. The TiO2 film was used as an oxide spacer. The emission intensity of the upconversion (UC) nanorods was strongly modulated by the thickness of the TiO2 layer. The extent of modulation depended on the separation distance between the Au layer and UC nanorods. A maximum UCL enhancement of 192-fold was observed for one green emission (540 nm) when a 10 nm-thick TiO2 film was used; 150-fold was observed for the other green emission (521 nm) at the same thickness of TiO2; and 105-fold was observed for the red emission (654 nm) when a 7.5 nm-thick TiO2 film was used. Alteration of the radiative decay rate was demonstrated for the first time in measurements of the decay times of UC nanorods positioned at various distances from the Au layer. The light interaction and coupling between metal Au and UC nanorods is numerically studied. The UCL mechanisms of multilayer plasmonic structures are discussed. Experimental results are explained and correspond well with those of theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The luminescence efficiency of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is of particular importance for their embodiment in biophotonic and photonic applications. Here, we show that the upconversion luminescence of typically used NaYF4:Yb3+30%/Tm3+0.5% nanoparticles can be enhanced by ~240 times through a hierarchical active core/active shell/inert shell (NaYF4:Yb3+30%/Tm3+0.5%)/NaYbF4/NaYF4 design, which involves the use of directed energy migration in the second active shell layer. The resulting active core/active shell/inert shell nanoparticles are determined to be about 11 times brighter than that of well-investigated (NaYF4:Yb3+30%/Tm3+0.5%)/NaYF4 active core/inert shell nanoparticles when excited at ~980 nm. The strategy for enhanced upconversion in Yb3+/Tm3+-codoped NaYF4 nanoparticles through directed energy migration might have implications for other types of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles.

Abstract:Light conversion efficiency, as the core issue of luminescence applications, has become the focus of upconversion (UC) study. Here, we have coated Au nano-films in different thicknesses on c-cut Tm3+/Yb3+/lithium niobate (LN) single crystal wafers, and discovered the luminescence intensity could be drastically enhanced by 15.1 and 26.5 folds for blue and red emission, respectively, in a proper Au thickness. Compared to the Au-free sample, optical measurements demonstrate a moderate enhancement of local optical power density. However, considering the non-linear relationship between the coating thickness and the enhancement factor, we attribute the drastic UC enhancement to the size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR); and accordingly, adopt an analytical optical absorption model to calculate the electron density of Au coating, which manipulates the resonance intensity and enhancement factor. The above explanation is further verified by the variation of LSPR frequency. These findings interpret the interaction between nano-scale Au coating and crystal surface, and demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of LSPR-enhanced UC luminescence in crystalline materials.

Abstract:Lanthanide doped upconversion nanopartides reveal enormous potential for biomedical applications. However, they are limited by low upconversion efficiency. In this paper, we demonstrate tip-enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) from a single Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 nanoparticle with a maximum enhancement factor of 11 by the plasmonic effect, which is a solution for improving the conversion efficiency and will become a potential technique for the applications in sensitive imaging and detection via speeding up both the absorption and the emission processes of lanthanide doped upconversion nanopartides. By investigating the optical properties of the tip-enhanced UCL at 550 and 660 nm separately in Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 nanopartides, we observe that the gold-coated tip influences the upconversion process in Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 particles by improving the reception and the transmission of incident electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:The coupling of upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) with the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of noble metals is a promising way to improve luminescent efficiency of UCNPs; however, it is still a challenge to achieve stable, reproducible and effective upconversion luminescence (UCL) enhancement through such coupling. In this work, we present a novel strategy to improve UCL of NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ UCNPs, by combining the near-field coupling of SPR of silver and the far-field coupling of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) opal photonic crystals (OPCs) with the UCNPs. In order to control the effective interaction distance between the UCNPs and the SPR, a porous silver film consisting of randomly distributed silver nanoparticles (NPs) (> 100 nm) was prepared which demonstrated strong SPR over a broad wavelength range, and its coupling to the UCNPs was found to be much stronger than that of a dense film. In the far-field coupling of OPCs, the photonic stop band (PSB) of the PMMA OPCs was tuned to 980 nm, matching exactly the excitation light. By modulating the particle size of the UCNPs, and the direction and excitation power of the incident light, a maximum enhancement of 60-fold was observed, which is an important advance for metal-induced UCL enhancement systems.
