Abstract:A lossless beam-splitter has certain (complex-valued) probability amplitudes for sending an incoming photon into one of two possible directions. We use elementary laws of classical and quantum optics to obtain general relations among the magnitudes and phases of these probability amplitudes. Proceeding to examine a pair of (nearly) single-mode wavepackets in the number-states |n1> and |n2> that simultaneously arrive at the splitter's input ports, we find the distribution of photon-number states at the output ports using an argument inspired by Feynman's scattering analysis of indistinguishable Bose particles. The result thus obtained coincides with that of the standard quantum-optical treatment of beam-splitters via annihilation and creation operators a and a†. A simple application of the Feynman method provides a form of justification for the Bose enhancement implicit in the well-known formulas a|n>=sqrt(n)|n-1> and a†|n>=sqrt(n+1)|n+1>.

Abstract:We aim to analytically arrive at a beam splitter formulation for electron waves. The electron beam splitter is an essential component of quantum logical devices. To arrive at the beam splitter structure, the electrons are treated as waves, i.e. we assume the transport to be ballistic. Ballistic electrons are electrons that travel over such short distances that their phase coherence is maintained. For mesoscopic devices with size smaller than the mean free path, the phase relaxation length and the Fermi wavelength of electrons in the medium, the transport can be considered to be coherent and hence ballistic. In such a case the electron motion can be completely described by the Schrodinger's wave equation with an effective mass assigned to the electron. To design a beam splitter, we draw inspiration from an electromagnetic beam splitter, where the Maxwell's equations (and subsequently the Helmholtz equation) are used to describe the splitting of light across a thin slab of dielectric material. The parameters of the media and the thickness of the slab can be manipulated to achieve a 50-50 beam splitter. We wish to achieve a similar 50-50 beam splitting for the electron wave. Using an analogy between the scalar Helmholtz equation and the Schrodinger's equation for a ballistic electron, we arrive at this desired beam splitter structure for the electron.

Abstract:An atomic beam which is incident on a laser beam can be reflected or transmitted depending on the choice of atomic and laser beam parameters. We show that quantum reflection and tunnelling by atoms through a laser beam is possible in principle and develop a novel scheme for an atomic beamsplitter which is based on quantum reflection and tunnelling. We compare this scheme to other proposals for atomic beamsplitters.

Abstract:Beam splitters are indispensable elements in optical and photonic systems, and are therefore employed in both classical and quantum technologies. Depending on the intended application, these devices can divide incident light according to its power, polarization state, or wavelength. In this work, we theoretically present a novel type of beam splitter capable of separating a light beam into its two-mode bright and dark components. We propose a prototype based on an optical cross-cavity system resonantly coupled to a $\Lambda$-type three-level atom. The dark component of the incoming light is transmitted because the antisymmetric collective mode of the cavity setup is decoupled from the atom. Meanwhile, in a high-cooperativity regime, the bright component is reflected due to Autler-Townes splitting, which arises from the strong coupling between the atom and the symmetric collective mode of the cavity setup. Although the device requires only a two-level atom to operate, using a three-level atom allows the device to be turned on or off by controlling the atomic ground state. Our results pave the way for new applications of beam splitters that leverage the collective properties of light. Manipulating and exploiting this additional degree of freedom can advance the field of quantum optics and contribute to the development of quantum technologies.

Abstract:The beam splitter is one of the basic optical components. Traditional beam splitters use bulky cubes or plates to realize beam splitting and thereby can hardly be used in a compact optical system. Recently, the beam splitter based on phase gradient metasurfaces has been proposed to split beam with a compact size. However, it is facing challenges on the efficiency and manufacturability. Herein, a beam splitter based on single-sized flat dielectric metagrating for arbitrary polarizations is proposed. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated beam splitter reaches as high as 80% for both TM and TE polarizations at peak wavelength. Moreover, it has a broad working wavelength range (455-550 nm) at visible wavelength where the diffraction efficiency is much higher than 60%. Apart from the broadband and high diffraction efficiency, the steering angle can be simply adjusted by varying the periodicity. Splitting light with a flat metagrating enriches the field of flat photonics, opening up new possibilities in applications such as augment reality displays, imaging systems, compact spectrometers, and lidars.
An Efficient Two-Port Electron Beam Splitter via Quantum Interaction-Free Measurement

Abstract:Semi-transparent mirrors are standard elements in light optics for splitting light beams or creating two versions of the same image. Such mirrors do not exist in electron optics, although they could be beneficial in existing techniques such as electron interferometry and holography and enable novel electron imaging and spectroscopy techniques. We propose a design for an electron beam splitter using the concept of quantum interaction-free measurement (IFM). The design combines an electron resonator with a weak phase grating. Fast switching gates allow electrons to enter and exit the resonator. While in the resonator, the phase grating transfers intensity from the direct beam into one of the weakly diffracted beams at each pass. To make the beam splitter an efficient two-port splitter, the intensity in all other diffracted beams is blocked by an aperture. The IFM principle minimizes the loss of total intensity by this aperture. We use a scattering matrix method to analyze the performance of the beam splitter, including the effects of inelastic scattering in the phase grating. This design can be generalized to beam splitters for not only electrons, but also photons, neutrons, atoms, and other quantum mechanical systems.

Entanglement, loss, and quantumness: When balanced beam splitters are best

Abstract:The crux of quantum optics is using beam splitters to generate entanglement, including in pioneering experiments conducted by Hanbury-Brown and Twiss and Hong, Ou, and Mandel. This lies at the heart of what makes boson sampling hard to emulate by classical computers and is a vital component of quantum computation with light. Yet, despite overwhelming positive evidence, the conjecture that beam splitters with equal reflection and transmission probabilities generate the most entanglement for any state interfered with the vacuum has remained unproven for almost two decades [Asbóth et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{94}, 173602 (2005)]. We prove this conjecture for ubiquitous entanglement monotones by uncovering monotonicity, convexity, and entropic properties of states undergoing photon loss. Because beam splitters are so fundamental, our results yield numerous corollaries for quantum optics, from inequalities for quasiprobability distributions to proofs of a recent conjecture for the evolution of a measure of quantumness through loss. One can now definitively state: the more balanced a beam splitter, the more entanglement it can generate with the vacuum.

Abstract:Effects of non-ideal optical components in realizing quantum Zeno effect in an all-optical setup are analyzed. Beam splitters are the important components in this experimental configuration. Non-uniform transmission coefficient, photon absorption and thermal noise are considered. Numerical simulation of the experiment is performed using the Monte Carlo wavefunction method. It is argued that there is an optimal number of beam splitters to be used for maximizing the expected output in the experiment.

Quantum Beam Splitter as a Quantum Coherence Controller

Abstract:We propose a quantum beam splitter (QBS) with tunable reflection and transmission coefficients. More importantly, our device based on a Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric system enables the generation and manipulation of asymmetric quantum coherence of the output photons. For the interference of two weak coherent-state inputs, our QBS can produce anti-bunched photons from one output port and bunched photons from the other, showcasing high parity asymmetry and strong coherence control capabilities. Beyond the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect, perfect photon blockade with vanishing $g^{(2)}(0)$ is achievable in two-photon interference. These striking effects of the QBS fundamentally arise from the parity-symmetry-breaking interaction and the quantum interference between the photon scattering channels. Our results could inspire novel applications and the development of innovative photonic devices for the manipulation of weak quantum light.

Abstract:The general matrix representation of a beam splitter array is presented. Each beam splitter has a transmission/reflection coefficient that determines the behavior of these individual devices and, in consequence, the whole system response. The general matrix representation of each beam splitter is given as rotations of a $2n-{th}$ dimensional space. With these operators, the matrix that describes the entire array and, consequently, the final probability distribution of an input photon state can be calculated.

Abstract:We demonstrate the splitting of a low-energy electron beam by means of a microwave pseudopotential formed above a planar chip substrate. Beam splitting arises from smoothly transforming the transverse guiding potential for an electron beam from a single-well harmonic confinement into a double-well, thereby generating two separated output beams with $5\,$mm lateral spacing. Efficient beam splitting is observed for electron kinetic energies up to $3\,$eV, in excellent agreement with particle tracking simulations. We discuss prospects of this novel beam splitter approach for electron-based quantum matter-wave optics experiments.

Abstract:We consider the problem of an atomic beam propagating quantum mechanically through an atom beam splitter. Casting the problem in an adiabatic representation (in the spirit of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in molecular physics) sheds light on explicit effects due to non-adiabatic passage of the atoms through the splitter region. We are thus able to probe the fully three dimensional structure of the beam splitter, gathering quantitative information about mode-mixing, splitting ratios,and reflection and transmission probabilities.

Abstract:Gradient metasurfaces are extensively utilized for polarized beam splitting (BS) in classical and quantum optics. Specifically, their phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs. However, the full potential of this unique path-polarization-locked property in multi-beam splitting has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate that a single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beam splitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes, which provides a multi-beam interference capability. In the classical region, we demonstrate that parallel BS allows continuous modulation of output light intensity and polarization state through input polarization adjustment. While in the quantum realm, parallel BS introduces an additional path-polarization correlation into Hong-Ou-Mandel interference for orthogonal circularly polarized photons. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface presents a versatile approach to manipulate light at the micro-scale, which will have potential applications in optical computing and on-chip quantum information processing.

Abstract:Optical beams bearing orbital angular momentum have been recently recognized as potential candidates for realizing D-dimensional quantum systems (qudits). In this paper, we propose an optical scheme to implement an orbital angular momentum beam splitter, which changes the outgoing direction with respect to the incoming direction while leaving the qudit state unchanged. Furthermore we demonstrate that such a beam splitter can be used to sort different orbital angular states of a single photon, create arbitrary superpositions of orbital angular momentum states, and implement a high-dimensional Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol for quantum key distribution.
A Parallel Beam Splitting Based on Gradient Metasurface: Preparation and Fusion of Quantum Entanglement

Abstract:Gradient metasurface, formed by a set of subwavelength unit cells with different phase modulation, is widely used in polarized beam splitting (BS) in the classical and quantum optics. Specifically, its phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs.Using this unique path-polarization locked property, we demonstrate that the single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beamsplitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes. Such a parallel BS metasurface provides a multi-beam interference capability for both classical and quantum light manipulation. Taking this advantage, we first prepare path and polarization hybrid entangled states of two, three, and multi photons from unentangled photon sources. Then, the ability of parallel BS-facilitated entanglement is applied to demonstrate entanglement fusion among entangled photon pairs, which can greatly enlarge the entanglement dimension. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface opens up a versatile way to manipulate the quantum state at the micro/nano scale, which will have potential applications in on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing.
