Abstract:Beam splitters are indispensable elements in optical and photonic systems, and are therefore employed in both classical and quantum technologies. Depending on the intended application, these devices can divide incident light according to its power, polarization state, or wavelength. In this work, we theoretically present a novel type of beam splitter capable of separating a light beam into its two-mode bright and dark components. We propose a prototype based on an optical cross-cavity system resonantly coupled to a $\Lambda$-type three-level atom. The dark component of the incoming light is transmitted because the antisymmetric collective mode of the cavity setup is decoupled from the atom. Meanwhile, in a high-cooperativity regime, the bright component is reflected due to Autler-Townes splitting, which arises from the strong coupling between the atom and the symmetric collective mode of the cavity setup. Although the device requires only a two-level atom to operate, using a three-level atom allows the device to be turned on or off by controlling the atomic ground state. Our results pave the way for new applications of beam splitters that leverage the collective properties of light. Manipulating and exploiting this additional degree of freedom can advance the field of quantum optics and contribute to the development of quantum technologies.

Abstract:A lossless beam-splitter has certain (complex-valued) probability amplitudes for sending an incoming photon into one of two possible directions. We use elementary laws of classical and quantum optics to obtain general relations among the magnitudes and phases of these probability amplitudes. Proceeding to examine a pair of (nearly) single-mode wavepackets in the number-states |n1> and |n2> that simultaneously arrive at the splitter's input ports, we find the distribution of photon-number states at the output ports using an argument inspired by Feynman's scattering analysis of indistinguishable Bose particles. The result thus obtained coincides with that of the standard quantum-optical treatment of beam-splitters via annihilation and creation operators a and a†. A simple application of the Feynman method provides a form of justification for the Bose enhancement implicit in the well-known formulas a|n>=sqrt(n)|n-1> and a†|n>=sqrt(n+1)|n+1>.

Quantum Beam Splitter as a Quantum Coherence Controller

Abstract:We propose a quantum beam splitter (QBS) with tunable reflection and transmission coefficients. More importantly, our device based on a Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric system enables the generation and manipulation of asymmetric quantum coherence of the output photons. For the interference of two weak coherent-state inputs, our QBS can produce anti-bunched photons from one output port and bunched photons from the other, showcasing high parity asymmetry and strong coherence control capabilities. Beyond the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect, perfect photon blockade with vanishing $g^{(2)}(0)$ is achievable in two-photon interference. These striking effects of the QBS fundamentally arise from the parity-symmetry-breaking interaction and the quantum interference between the photon scattering channels. Our results could inspire novel applications and the development of innovative photonic devices for the manipulation of weak quantum light.

Entanglement, loss, and quantumness: When balanced beam splitters are best

Abstract:The crux of quantum optics is using beam splitters to generate entanglement, including in pioneering experiments conducted by Hanbury-Brown and Twiss and Hong, Ou, and Mandel. This lies at the heart of what makes boson sampling hard to emulate by classical computers and is a vital component of quantum computation with light. Yet, despite overwhelming positive evidence, the conjecture that beam splitters with equal reflection and transmission probabilities generate the most entanglement for any state interfered with the vacuum has remained unproven for almost two decades [Asbóth et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{94}, 173602 (2005)]. We prove this conjecture for ubiquitous entanglement monotones by uncovering monotonicity, convexity, and entropic properties of states undergoing photon loss. Because beam splitters are so fundamental, our results yield numerous corollaries for quantum optics, from inequalities for quasiprobability distributions to proofs of a recent conjecture for the evolution of a measure of quantumness through loss. One can now definitively state: the more balanced a beam splitter, the more entanglement it can generate with the vacuum.

Abstract:We propose a scheme of quantum computation with nonlinear quantum optics. Polarization states of photons are used for qubits. Photons with different frequencies represent different qubits. Single qubit rotation operation is implemented through optical elements like the Faraday polarization rotator. Photons are separated into different optical paths, or merged into a single optical path using dichromatic mirrors. The controlled-NOT gate between two qubits is implemented by the proper combination of parametric up and down conversions. This scheme has the following features: (1) No auxiliary qubits are required in the controlled-NOT gate operation; (2) No measurement is required in the course of the computation; (3) It is resource efficient and conceptually simple.

Abstract:We present an implementation of the Deutsch Algorithm using linear optical elements and laser light. We encoded two quantum bits in form of superpositions of electromagnetic fields in two degrees of freedom of the beam: its polarisation and orbital angular momentum. Our approach, based on a Sagnac interferometer, offers outstanding stability and demonstrates that optical quantum computation is possible using classical states of light.

Abstract:We realize quantum gates for path qubits with a high-speed, polarization-independent and tunable beam splitter. Two electro-optical modulators act in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as high-speed phase shifters and rapidly tune its splitting ratio. We test its performance with heralded single photons, observing a polarization-independent interference contrast above 95%. The switching time is about 5.6 ns, and a maximal repetition rate is 2.5 MHz. We demonstrate tunable feed-forward operations of a single-qubit gate of path-encoded qubits and a two-qubit gate via measurement-induced interaction between two photons.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive matrix representation of a beam splitter array, incorporating multiple input and output channels. We propose treating each beam splitter as rotational matrices of a 2 n -th-dimensional space. With these operators, the matrix that describes the entire square array and, consequently, the final probability distribution of an input photon state can be calculated. Furthermore, square and non-square arrays are explored using the same approach, encompassing certain interferometer arrays, the quantum quincunx, and the discrete quantum Zeno effect. In addition, we show the versatility of the proposed operator by using it to map the action of field operators in the description of multiphoton inputs.

Abstract:Effects of non-ideal optical components in realizing quantum Zeno effect in an all-optical setup are analyzed. Beam splitters are the important components in this experimental configuration. Non-uniform transmission coefficient, photon absorption and thermal noise are considered. Numerical simulation of the experiment is performed using the Monte Carlo wavefunction method. It is argued that there is an optimal number of beam splitters to be used for maximizing the expected output in the experiment.

Abstract:The first section of the work investigates light modes as a means of implementing optical qubits and qudits. The modes considered are polarization mode, path mode, transverse spatial mode, frequency mode, temporal bin-mode and temporal mode. Subsequently, mathematical model of linear optical elements like beam splitters (BS) and phase shifters are deduced and their capability of representing any single qubit optical gate is exposed. Finally Knill, Laflamme and Milburn (KLM) method of using linear optical elements to promote nonlinear operations based on nonlinear (nondeterministic) sign-flip gate (NS) is explained, and designs of two qubits conditional sign flip gate (c-z1/16) and CNOT gate, both based on KLM method, are demonstrated. So, universal set of quantum gates based on linear optics is possible.

Abstract:Gradient metasurfaces are extensively utilized for polarized beam splitting (BS) in classical and quantum optics. Specifically, their phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs. However, the full potential of this unique path-polarization-locked property in multi-beam splitting has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate that a single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beam splitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes, which provides a multi-beam interference capability. In the classical region, we demonstrate that parallel BS allows continuous modulation of output light intensity and polarization state through input polarization adjustment. While in the quantum realm, parallel BS introduces an additional path-polarization correlation into Hong-Ou-Mandel interference for orthogonal circularly polarized photons. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface presents a versatile approach to manipulate light at the micro-scale, which will have potential applications in optical computing and on-chip quantum information processing.

Abstract:We investigate the ray dynamics in an optical cavity when a ray splitting mechanism is present. The cavity is a conventional two-mirror stable resonator and the ray splitting is achieved by inserting an optical beam splitter perpendicular to the cavity axis. Using Hamiltonian optics, we show that such a simple device presents a surprisingly rich chaotic ray dynamics.

Abstract:Quantum computers promise to increase greatly the efficiency of solving problems such as factoring large integers, combinatorial optimization and quantum physics simulation. One of the greatest challenges now is to implement the basic quantum-computational elements in a physical system and to demonstrate that they can be reliably and scalably controlled. One of the earliest proposals for quantum computation is based on implementing a quantum bit with two optical modes containing one photon. The proposal is appealing because of the ease with which photon interference can be observed. Until now, it suffered from the requirement for non-linear couplings between optical modes containing few photons. Here we show that efficient quantum computation is possible using only beam splitters, phase shifters, single photon sources and photo-detectors. Our methods exploit feedback from photo-detectors and are robust against errors from photon loss and detector inefficiency. The basic elements are accessible to experimental investigation with current technology.

A Parallel Beam Splitting Based on Gradient Metasurface: Preparation and Fusion of Quantum Entanglement

Abstract:Gradient metasurface, formed by a set of subwavelength unit cells with different phase modulation, is widely used in polarized beam splitting (BS) in the classical and quantum optics. Specifically, its phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs.Using this unique path-polarization locked property, we demonstrate that the single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beamsplitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes. Such a parallel BS metasurface provides a multi-beam interference capability for both classical and quantum light manipulation. Taking this advantage, we first prepare path and polarization hybrid entangled states of two, three, and multi photons from unentangled photon sources. Then, the ability of parallel BS-facilitated entanglement is applied to demonstrate entanglement fusion among entangled photon pairs, which can greatly enlarge the entanglement dimension. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface opens up a versatile way to manipulate the quantum state at the micro/nano scale, which will have potential applications in on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Abstract:The evolution of quantum light through linear optical devices can be described by the scattering matrix $S$ of the system. For linear optical systems with $m$ possible modes, the evolution of $n$ input photons is given by a unitary matrix $U=\varphi_{m,M}(S)$ given by a known homomorphism, $\varphi_{m,M}$, which depends on the size of the resulting Hilbert space of the possible photon states, $M$. We present a method to decide whether a given unitary evolution $U$ for $n$ photons in $m$ modes can be achieved with linear optics or not and the inverse transformation $\varphi_{m,M}^{-1}$ when the transformation can be implemented. Together with previous results, the method can be used to find a simple optical system which implements any quantum operation within the reach of linear optics. The results come from studying the adjoint map bewtween the Lie algebras corresponding to the Lie groups of the relevant unitary matrices.

Abstract:We demonstrate a coherent and dynamic beam splitter based on light storage in cold atoms. An input weak laser pulse is first stored in a cold atom ensemble via electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). A set of counter-propagating control fields, applied at a later time, retrieves the stored pulse into two output spatial modes. The high visibility interference between the two output pulses clearly demonstrates that the beam splitting process is coherent. Furthermore, by manipulating the control lasers, it is possible to dynamically control the storage time, the power splitting ratio, the relative phase, and the optical frequencies of the output pulses. The active beam splitter demonstrated in this work is expected to significantly reduce the resource requirement in photonic quantum information and in all-optical information processing as a single cold atom ensemble can functionally replace a variety of optical elements, including beam splitters, mirrors, phase shifters, and optical quantum memories.

Abstract:We have realized a quantum optics like Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) experiment by partitioning, on an electronic beam-splitter, single elementary electronic excitations produced one by one by an on-demand emitter. We show that the measurement of the output currents correlations in the HBT geometry provides a direct counting, at the single charge level, of the elementary excitations (electron/hole pairs) generated by the emitter at each cycle. We observe the antibunching of low energy excitations emitted by the source with thermal excitations of the Fermi sea already present in the input leads of the splitter, which suppresses their contribution to the partition noise. This effect is used to probe the energy distribution of the emitted wave-packets.

Enhancing nonclassical properties of quantum states of light using linear optics

Abstract:In this letter, we present a simple and versatile scheme for enhancing the nonclassical properties of light states using only linear optics and photodetectors. By combining a coherent state $|\alpha\rangle$ and an arbitrary pure state of light $|\phi\rangle$ (excluding coherent states) at two beam splitters, we show that the amplitude $\alpha$ of the coherent state can be tuned to filter out specific Fock components and generate states of light with enhanced nonclassical features. We provide two examples of input states and demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme in enhancing the sub-Poissonian statistics or the quadrature squeezing of the output states.
