A Method for Measuring Thermal Radiation Properties of Semi-Transparent Materials

Abstract:Films that are semi-transparent in the infrared are extensively used in solar energy applications and agriculture. For analysing the performance of such systems, it is important to know the thermal radiation properties of these films. Whereas transmissivity can be determined easily, measurement of emissivity poses a problem. The intensity usually consists of radiation emitted from the film and transmitted background radiation. In this paper a method for determining the hemispherical total emittance, reflectance and transmittance of semi-transparent films simultaneously is presented. It has the distinctive features of simplicity and high precision. The results for some transparent films are presented.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.

Abstract:Temperature measurements inside semi-transparent materials are important in many fields. This study investigates the measurements of interior temperature distributions in a one-dimensional semi-transparent material using multi-wavelength pyrometry based on the Levenberg–Marquardt method (LMM). The investigated material is semi-transparent Zinc Sulfide (ZnS), an infrared-transmitting optical material operating at long wavelengths. The radiation properties of the one-dimensional semi-transparent ZnS plate, including the effective spectral–directional radiation intensity and the proportion of emitted radiation, are numerically discussed at different wavelengths (8.0–14.0μm) and temperature distributions (400–800K) to provide the basic data for the temperature inversion problem. Multi-wavelength pyrometry was combined with the Levenberg–Marquardt method to resolve the temperature distribution along the radiative transfer direction based on the line-of-sight spectral radiation intensities at multiple wavelengths in the optimized spectral range of (11.0–14.0μm) for the semi-transparent ZnS plate. The analyses of the non-linear inverse problem show that with less than 5.0% noise, the inversion temperature results using the Levenberg–Marquardt method are satisfactory for linear or Gaussian temperature distributions in actual applications. The analysis provides valuable guidelines for applications using multi-wavelength pyrometry for temperature measurements of semi-transparent materials.

The thermal radiation properties of several semi-transparent films are reported.

Abstract:In the realm of high-tech materials and energy applications, accurately measuring the transient heat flow at media boundaries and the internal thermal conductivity of materials in harsh heat exchange environments poses a significant challenge when using conventional direct measurement methods. Consequently, the study of photothermal parameter reconstruction in translucent media, which relies on indirect measurement techniques, has crucial practical value. Current research on reconstructing photothermal properties within participating media typically focuses on single-objective or time-invariant properties. There is a pressing need to develop effective methods for the simultaneous reconstruction of time-varying thermal flow fields and internal thermal conductivity at the boundaries of participating media. This paper introduces a computational model based on the numerical simulation theory of internal heat transfer systems in participating media, stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithms, and Kalman filter technology. The model aims to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of various thermal parameters within the target medium. Our results demonstrate that under varying levels of measurement noise, the inversion results for different target parameters exhibit slight oscillations around the true values, leading to a reduction in reconstruction accuracy. However, overall, the model demonstrates robustness and accuracy in ideal conditions, validating its effectiveness.

Abstract:In this study, a photothermal nondestructive method was proposed to measure the material parameters of semi-transparent or translucent thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). We derived a theoretical model for the photothermal signal from a two-layer semi-infinite material system with a translucent first layer after a pulse laser excitation. Its solution was verified by numerical solution. A data regression algorithm based on a least-squares fitting was used for the determination of the material parameters in the translucent first layer material. To verify this new method, an experimental system was set up with a pulse laser for thermal excitation and an infrared camera for image acquisition of the thermal emission transient from several translucent EBPVD TBC samples. The predicted coating thickness is consistent with the measured value by an optical microscope. The predicted thermal conductivity and optical attenuation coefficients in the absorption and emission band are found to be in good agreement with reference values.

Abstract:With the development of micro-nano fabrication, the measurement of thermo-physical property of micro-nano material becomes more significant. At first, the basic principle of measurement of the thermo-physical property of micro-nano material with femtosecond laser and the means of realization were introduced. And then, two-temperature model, hyperbolic two-step model, hyperbolic one-step model, parabolic one-step model, dual-phase-lag model and parabolic two-step model were compared. Secondly, the characteristics of the measurement of the thermo-physical property of micro-nano material with femtosecond laser were introduced. Thirdly, three common system such as single-color femtosecond laser pump in front and probe system, two-color femtosecond laser pump in front and probe system, and single-color femtosecond laser pump and probe system in different side were introduced. Finally, the direction of future research in measurement of the thermo-physical property of materials was pointed out.

Abstract:This paper presents an ultrasonic technique for simultaneous determination of the complete set of acoustical and geometrical properties of a layer embedded between two known materials using point-focus transducer, which provides a high lateral resolution. The theoretical model of the two-dimensional spectrum Rt(θ,ω) of the layer is calculated as a function of six parameters: longitudinal and transverse velocities ci, ct, attenuation αi, αt, density ρ and thickness h, which fully determined the layer properties. The experimental spectrum Re(θ,ω) can be measured by V(z,t) technique using point-focus transducer which is verified in our previous work. By minimizing the differences between the theoretical and experimental spectra at normal and oblique incidence, the six parameters of the layer can be derived. The full set of the properties of a 250μm thick stainless steel layer immersed in water are determined using this technique as an example. This measurement technique enables precise measuring of the local full set properties of layers.

Abstract:The transient plane source (TPS) method has been extensively applied as a high-accuracy and short-duration technique for determining the thermal conductivities of materials. TPS method is not reliable when measuring semi-transparent materials where radiation occurs. The governing equations of the heat transfer process coupled with conduction and radiation are deduced and further nondimensionalized to comprehensively analyze the influence factors of measurement error. This study presents four dimensionless parameters determining temperature variation and measurement error. A numerical solution of the coupled heat transfer is established to quantitatively study the effects of the dimensionless parameters on measurement accuracy. Computed results show that the scattering effect can reduce the overestimate of the measured thermal conductivity; the deviation of the measured conductivity linearly depends on the sensor emissivity; the dimensionless power has a weak effect on measurement error; the decrease in the sensor optical radius and the increase in the conduction radiation parameter lead to a decrease in measurement error. The dimensionless parameters can be used to estimate the deviation of the measured conductivity. The measurement accuracy can be improved by using a sensor with low emissivity and minor radius when applying TPS method on semi-transparent materials.

Abstract:Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is a widely used technique for characterizing the thermal properties of bulk and thin-film materials. Traditional TDTR analyses typically focus on positive delay time data for fitting, often requiring multiple-frequency measurements to simultaneously determine thermal conductivity and heat capacity. However, this multiple-frequency approach is cumbersome and may introduce inaccuracies due to inconsistencies across different frequency measurements. In this study, we propose a novel solution to these challenges by harnessing the often-overlooked negative delay time data in TDTR. By integrating these data points, we offer a streamlined, single-frequency method that simultaneously measures thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and interface thermal conductance for both bulk and thin-film materials, enhancing measurement efficiency and accuracy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method by measuring several bulk samples including sapphire, silicon, diamond, and Si0.992Ge0.008, and several thin-film samples including a 1.76-{\mu}m-thick gallium nitride (GaN) film epitaxially grown on a silicon substrate, a 320-nm-thick gallium oxide ({\epsilon}-Ga2O3) film epitaxially grown on a silicon carbide substrate, and a 330-nm-thick tantalum nitride (TaN) film deposited on a sapphire substrate, all coated with an aluminum (Al) transducer layer on the surface. Our results show that the new method accurately determines the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of these samples as well as the Al/sample interface thermal conductance using a single modulation frequency, except for the Si0.992Ge0.008 sample. This study sheds light on the untapped potential of TDTR, offering a new, efficient, and accurate avenue for thermal analysis in material science.

Abstract:Thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal conductance play crucial roles in the design of engineering systems where temperature and thermal stress are of concerns. To date, a variety of measurement techniques are available for both bulk and thin film solid-state materials with a broad temperature range. For thermal characterization of bulk material, the steady-state absolute method, laser flash diffusivity method, and transient plane source method are most used. For thin film measurement, the 3{\omega} method and transient thermoreflectance technique including both frequency-domain and time-domain analysis are employed widely. This work reviews several most commonly used measurement techniques. In general, it is a very challenging task to determine thermal conductivity and interface contact resistance with less than 5% error. Selecting a specific measurement technique to characterize thermal properties need to be based on: 1) knowledge on the sample whose thermophysical properties is to be determined, including the sample geometry and size, and preparation method; 2) understanding of fundamentals and procedures of the testing technique and equipment, for example, some techniques are limited to samples with specific geometrics and some are limited to specific range of thermophysical properties; 3) understanding of the potential error sources which might affect the final results, for example, the convection and radiation heat losses.

Infrared thermotransmittance-based temperature field measurements in semitransparent media

Abstract:Temperature field contactless measurements in or at the surfaces of semitransparent media are a scientific challenge, as classical thermography techniques based on proper material emission cannot be used. In this work, an alternative method using infrared thermotransmittance for contactless imaging temperatures is proposed. To overcome the weakness of the measured signal, a lock-in acquisition chain is developed, and an imaging demodulation technique is used to retrieve the phase and amplitude of the thermotransmitted signal. These measurements, combined with an analytical model, enable the estimation of the thermal diffusivity and conductivity of an infrared semitransparent insulator (wafer of borofloat 33 glass) as well as the monochromatic thermotransmittance coefficient at 3.3 um. The obtained temperature fields are in good agreement with the model, and a detection limit of $\pm 2^{\circ}$ C is estimated with this method. The results of this work open new opportunities in the development of advanced thermal metrology for semitransparent media.

Abstract:This study introduces the synthesis and detailed characterization of a novel thermochromic material capable of reversible alterations in its thermotropic transmittance. Through an emulsion polymerization process, this newly developed material is composed of 75–85% octadecyl acrylate and 0–7% allyl methacrylate, demonstrating a pronounced discoloration effect across a narrow yet critical temperature range of 24.5–39 °C. The synthesized powder underwent a battery of tests, including differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy. These comprehensive evaluations confirmed the material's exceptional thermal stability, uniform particle size distribution, and strong anchoring properties. Building upon these findings, we advanced the development of thermochromic polyvinyl butyral films and laminated glass products. By utilizing a coextrusion technique, we integrated these films into laminated glass, setting a new benchmark against existing glass technologies. Remarkably, the incorporation of thermochromic PVB films into laminated glass led to a significant reduction in solar irradiance of 20–30%, outperforming traditional double silver low-emissivity glass. This achievement demonstrates the exceptional shading and thermal insulation properties of the material. The research presented herein not only pioneers a valuable methodology for the engineering of smart materials with tunable thermotropic transmittance but also holds the key to unlocking enhanced energy efficiency across a spectrum of applications. The potential impact of this innovation on the realm of sustainable building materials is profound, promising significant strides toward energy conservation and environmental stewardship.

Abstract:The obtainment of spectral radiation characteristics of semitransparent materials mainly includes the use of a theoretical method or experimental method. As the experimental method can better characterize the real radiation transmission results inside the material, it is generally considered more reliable and used as the basis for the verification of theoretical results. In this paper, the absorbing and scattering semitransparent materials are taken as the analysis object to illustrate the research status and future development direction in the field of measurement and identification of spectral radiation characteristics. According to the physical quantities measured and the temperature range, research status is discussed for the spectral radiation characteristic measurements of absorbing and scattering semitransparent materials, which specifically involves the measurement principle, measuring system, measuring physical quantity, identification model and application range. This research will have guiding significance for the following research directions in the field of the acquisition of spectral radiation characteristic parameters of other new materials in the future.

Abstract:Inverse estimation of temperature-dependent refractive index and absorption coefficient of semitransparent media is studied in this work. The forward transient coupled radiation-conduction heat transfer in semitransparent media is simulated by the finite volume method. The time-varying radiative response signals at the boundary (not the laser irradiation boundary) is adopted as measurement information in the inverse model. An improved teaching-learning-based optimization (ITLBO) algorithm is developed to retrieve the temperature-dependent refractive index and absorption coefficient simultaneously. Effects of model parameters (i.e. the laser heating time and measurement errors) and thermophysical parameters (i.e. the thermal conductivity and heat capacity) on the estimated results are analyzed thoroughly. All the retrieval results show that the inverse model and inverse algorithm is accurate and effective for predicting the temperature-dependent radiative properties of semitransparent media.

Abstract:Thermal interface materials are crucial to minimize the thermal resistance between a semiconductor device and a heat sink, especially for high-power electronic devices, which are susceptible to self-heating-induced failures. The effectiveness of these interface materials depends on their low thermal contact resistance coupled with high thermal conductivity. Various characterization techniques are used to determine the thermal properties of the thermal interface materials. However, their bulk or free-standing thermal properties are typically assessed rather than their thermal performance when applied as a thin layer in real application. In this study, we introduce a low-frequency range frequency domain thermoreflectance method that can measure the effective thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity of thermal interface materials simultaneously in situ, illustrated on silver-filled thermal interface material samples, offering a distinct advantage over traditional techniques such as ASTM D5470. Monte Carlo fitting is used to quantify the thermal conductivities and heat capacities and their uncertainties, which are compared to a more efficient least-squares method.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of thermal properties in thin films is crucial for optimizing devices and deepening our understanding of heat transfer at nano and micro scales. This study presents a combined experimental and computational investigation on a chip-integrated technique for the assessment of in-plane thermal properties of thin films. This method stands out by incorporating inherent error cancelation to lessen the impact of radiative heat loss and allows simultaneous, independent determination of both thermal conductivity and diffusivity through straightforward linear fittings from the same dataset, reducing error propagation. We examine an 84 nm thick SiNx membrane over a temperature range from 100 K to nearly 500 K, aligning with previous studies. Further investigations into a conducting polymer film post-doping demonstrate a notable increase in both thermal conductivity and diffusivity, corroborating scanning thermal microscopy observations, confirming the technique's efficacy and reliability.

However, it remains a challenge to decouple the crosstalk on the multisensory in a single sensor to enhance reliability and practicality. Here, we present a generic strategy for introducing multiple optical parameters, a fluorescence intensity ratio, and a lifetime to monitor alterations of temperature and strain synergistically. An ultrasensitive sensing platform with suitable multiple emissions was constructed by designing luminescent metal halides to realize versatile energy transfer channels between intrinsic self-trapped excitons and dopants' emission centers. Thus, the flexible fiber was fabricated and committed to monitoring temperature and strain in real-time working conditions with precision and repeatability. Moreover, the decoupling of temperature and strain sensing can be performed by the fluorescence intensity ratio and the lifetime of the Mn2+ ions. This work paves the way for emerging luminescent metal halides with multiple emissions applied in advanced multifunctional optical sensors and provides the solution for decoupling the crosstalk on the multisensory to enhance its reliability and practicality. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.064054 © 2024 American Physical Society
