Abstract:We study the finite basis problem for 4-element additively idempotent semirings whose additive reducts are semilattices of height 1. Up to isomorphism, there are 58 such algebras. We show that 49 of them are finitely based and the remaining ones are nonfinitely based.

Abstract:For every semilattice $\mathcal{S}=(S,+)$, the set $\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{S})$ of its endomorphisms forms a semiring under point-wise addition and composition. We prove that the semiring of all endomorphisms of the 3-element chain has no finite identity basis. This, combined with earlier results by Dolinka (The finite basis problem for endomorphism semirings of finite semilattices with zero, Algebra Universalis 61, 441-448 (2009)), gives a complete solution to the finite basis problem for semirings of the form $\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{S})$ where $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite chain.

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

In particular, it is proved that (i) no equational theory of a non-trivial class of idempotent semifields has a finite basis; (ii) there are continuum-many equational theories of classes of idempotent semifields; and (iii) the equational theory of the class of idempotent semifields is co-NP-complete.

Abstract:We study some nil-ai-semiring varieties. We establish a model for the free object in the variety generated by all commutative flat semirings. Also, we provide two sufficient conditions under which a finite ai-semiring is nonfinitely based. As a consequence, we show that the power semiring of the finite nil-semigroup is nonfinitely based, where W is a finite set of words in the free commutative semigroup over an alphabet X , whenever the maximum of lengths of words in W is and W does not contain the k th power of a letter. This partially answers a problem raised by Jackson et al. (J Algebr 611: 211–245, 2022).

Abstract:For a commutative semiring S, by an S-algebra we mean a commutative semiring A equipped with a homomorphism from S to A. We show that the subvariety of S-algebras determined by the identities 1+2x=1 and x^2=x is closed under non-empty colimits. The (known) closedness of the category of Boolean rings and of the category of distributive lattices under non-empty colimits in the category of commutative semirings both follow from this general statement.

Abstract:Let $S$ be an additively idempotent semiring and $\mathbf{M}_n(S)$ be the semiring of all $n\times n$ matrices over $S$. We characterize the conditions of when the semiring $\mathbf{M}_n(S)$ is congruence-simple provided that the semiring $S$ is either commutative or finite. We also give a characterization of when the semiring $\mathbf{M}_n(S)$ is subdirectly irreducible for $S$ beeing almost integral (i.e., $xy+yx+x=x$ for all $x,y\in S$). In particular, we provide this characterization for the semirings $S$ derived from the pseudo MV-algebras.

Abstract:A ring is *unit-additive* if a sum of units is always either a unit or nilpotent. For example, $k[X]$ and $k[X]/(X^2)$ are unit-additive, but $\mathbb Z$ is not. We prove a wide-ranging theorem about semigroup rings, showing among other things that an affine semigroup ring $A[M]$ is unit-additive if and only if $A$ is unit-additive and $M$ has no nontrivial invertible elements. In the algebraic variety setting, we get a characterization of unit additivity in terms of the nonexistence of nonconstant maps to the punctured affine line, which can be seen in terms of extensions of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Specializing to elliptic curves, we show that the affine coordinate ring of an elliptic curve is always unit-additive. The concept of unit additivity leads to the related concept of unit-additivity dimension -- i.e. how far is an integral domain from being unit-additive? It turns out that rings of unit-additivity dimension 1 are of some interest, as they include the rings of integers of number fields, all power series rings, and most local rings. We construct rings of all unit-additivity dimensions and show that in the affine setting, unit-additivity dimension is bounded above by Krull dimension. We also construct the *unit-additive closure* of an integral domain $D$, being the smallest subring of the fraction field of $D$ that is unit-additive, as a localization at a certain multiplicative set in $D$.

The Case for Inverse Semirings

Abstract:A semiring generalises the notion of a ring, replacing the additive abelian group structure with that of a commutative monoid. In this paper, we study a notion positioned between a ring and a semiring -- a semiring whose additive monoid is a commutative inverse semigroup. These inverse semirings include some important classes of semirings, as well as some new motivating examples. We devote particular attention to the inverse semiring of bounded polynomials and argue for their computational significance. We then prove a number of fundamental results about inverse semirings, their modules and their ideals. Parts of the theory show strong similarities with rings, while other parts are akin to the theory of idempotent semirings or distributive lattices. We note in particular that downward-closed submodules are precisely kernels. We end by exploring a connection to the theory of E-unitary inverse semigroups.

Abstract:We prove that a semiring multiplicatively generated by its idempotents is commutative and Boolean, if every idempotent in the semiring has an orthogonal complement. We prove that a semiring additively generated by its idempotents is commutative, if every idempotent in the semiring has an orthogonal complement and all the nilpotents in the semirings are central. We also provide examples that the assumptions on the existence of orthogonal complements of idempotents and the centrality of nilpotents cannot be omitted.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate zero-divisor, nilpotent, idempotent, unit, small, and irreducible elements in semiring extensions such as amount, content, and monoid semialgebras. We also introduce new concepts such as the prime avoidance property in semirings, entire-like semirings, semialgebras with Property (A), and also, Armendariz and McCoy semialgebras and we prove some results related to these concepts. For example, we prove that if $B$ is an $S$-semialgebra, then under some conditions, the set of zero-divisors $Z(B)$ of $B$ is the union of the extended maximal primes of $Z(S)$. Finally, we prove a generalization of Eisenstein's irreducibility criterion.

Abstract:A new sufficient condition under which a semigroup admits no finite identity basis has been recently suggested in a joint paper by Karl Auinger, Yuzhu Chen, Xun Hu, Yanfeng Luo, and the author (see <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1405.0783">http://arxiv.org/abs/1405.0783</a>). Here we apply this condition to show the absence of a finite identity basis for the semigroup $\mathrm{UT}_3(\mathbb{R})$ of all upper triangular real $3\times 3$-matrices with 0s and/or 1s on the main diagonal. The result holds also for the case when $\mathrm{UT}_3(\mathbb{R})$ is considered as an involution semigroup under the reflection with respect to the secondary diagonal.
