Abstract:The semigroup is the only 4-element subsemigroup of the 5-element Brandt semigroup , up to isomorphism. Being an inverse semigroup, the semigroup can naturally be considered an additively idempotent semiring and is its subsemiring. We show that the semiring has a finite basis of identities.

Abstract:We present a new proof for the main claim made in the author's paper "On the identity bases of Brandt semigroups" (Ural. Gos. Univ. Mat. Zap. 14, no.1 (1985), 38--42); this claim provides an identity basis for an arbitrary Brandt semigroup over a group of finite exponent. We also show how to fill a gap in the original proof of the claim in loc. cit.

Abstract:A semiring generalises the notion of a ring, replacing the additive abelian group structure with that of a commutative monoid. In this paper, we study a notion positioned between a ring and a semiring -- a semiring whose additive monoid is a commutative inverse semigroup. These inverse semirings include some important classes of semirings, as well as some new motivating examples. We devote particular attention to the inverse semiring of bounded polynomials and argue for their computational significance. We then prove a number of fundamental results about inverse semirings, their modules and their ideals. Parts of the theory show strong similarities with rings, while other parts are akin to the theory of idempotent semirings or distributive lattices. We note in particular that downward-closed submodules are precisely kernels. We end by exploring a connection to the theory of E-unitary inverse semigroups.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate zero-divisor, nilpotent, idempotent, unit, small, and irreducible elements in semiring extensions such as amount, content, and monoid semialgebras. We also introduce new concepts such as the prime avoidance property in semirings, entire-like semirings, semialgebras with Property (A), and also, Armendariz and McCoy semialgebras and we prove some results related to these concepts. For example, we prove that if $B$ is an $S$-semialgebra, then under some conditions, the set of zero-divisors $Z(B)$ of $B$ is the union of the extended maximal primes of $Z(S)$. Finally, we prove a generalization of Eisenstein's irreducibility criterion.

Abstract:For a commutative semiring S, by an S-algebra we mean a commutative semiring A equipped with a homomorphism from S to A. We show that the subvariety of S-algebras determined by the identities 1+2x=1 and x^2=x is closed under non-empty colimits. The (known) closedness of the category of Boolean rings and of the category of distributive lattices under non-empty colimits in the category of commutative semirings both follow from this general statement.

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to explore semisubtractive ideals of semirings. We prove that they form a complete modular lattice. We introduce Golan closures and prove some of their basic properties. We explore the relations between $Q$-ideals and semisubtractive ideals of semirings, and also study them in $s$-local semirings. We introduce two subclasses of semisubtractive ideals: $s$-strongly irreducible and $s$-irreducible, and provide various representation theorems. By endowing a topology on the set of semisubtractive ideals, we prove that the space is $T_0$, sober, connected, and quasi-compact. We also briefly study continuous maps between semisubtractive spaces. We construct $s$-congruences and prove a bijection between these congruences and semisubtractive ideals.

Abstract:We extend the definition of a one-sided identity and a one-sided zero with respect to an entire set with a binary operation to subsets of a set with a binary operation. Given a set $S$ with a binary operation and a subset $A$ of $S$, $lidentity(A)$ is the set of all $b \in S$ such that $ba=a$ for all $a \in A$. There is a similar definition for $ridentity(A)$. Also given a set $S$ with a binary operation and a subset $A$ of $S$, $lzero(A)$ is the set of all $b \in S$ such that $ba=b$ for all $a \in A$. There is a similar definition for $rzero(A)$. In any semigroup or groupoid, every one-sided identity or zero is an idempotent, and every idempotent is a one-sided identity or zero for some subsemigroup or subgroupoid. In particular, every one-sided identity or zero of a maximal subsemigroup of a specific type is an idempotent, and every idempotent is a one-sided identity or zero for some maximal subsemigroup of a specific type. These types include groups, left [right] zero semigroups, and left [right] groups. It has been shown that every idempotent of a semigroup is the identity of a maximal subgroup of that semigroup. We show that every idempotent of a semigroup exists in a maximal left [right] zero subsemigroup. For each idempotent of a semigroup, we describe all rectangular band subsemigroups containing that idempotent. We also show that every idempotent of a semigroup exists in a maximal right [left] subgroup.

Abstract:Much study has been done on semigroups which are unions of groups. There are several ways in which a union of groups can be made into a semigroup in which each of the component groups arises as subgroups of the constructed semigroup. An important class of such unions is a semilattice of groups. Group semirings are semirings $(G,+,\cdot )$ where $(G,\cdot )$ is a group and $(G,+)$ is a left zero semigroup. We consider construction of semirings from classes of group semirings $\{G_\alpha :\alpha\in D \}$ indexed by a distributive lattice $D$. It is shown that if $S=\cup\{G_\alpha \}$ is a strong distributive lattice of group semirings $G_\alpha$ then the multiplicative semigroup $(S,\cdot)$ of the semiring $(S,+,\cdot)$ is a Clifford semigroup and the additive semigroup $(S,+)$ is a left normal band. Further in this case all the groups $G_\alpha $ are mutually isomorphic.

Abstract:We prove that a semiring multiplicatively generated by its idempotents is commutative and Boolean, if every idempotent in the semiring has an orthogonal complement. We prove that a semiring additively generated by its idempotents is commutative, if every idempotent in the semiring has an orthogonal complement and all the nilpotents in the semirings are central. We also provide examples that the assumptions on the existence of orthogonal complements of idempotents and the centrality of nilpotents cannot be omitted.

Abstract:Sufficient conditions are obtained under which the semigroup ring of a semigroup, in particular, of an inverse semigroup, is weakly regular. For some inverse semigroups and some orthodox semigroups, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak regularity of the semigroup rings are found. A problem is mentioned especially which is much more difficult for weak regularity than for regularity. Only a partial solution of this problem is given for weak regularity.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the generalization of inverse semigroups (without order). An ordered semigroup S is called an inverse ordered semigroup if for every a 2 S, any two inverses of a are H-related. We prove that an ordered semigroup is complete semilattice of t-simple ordered semigroups if and only if it is completely regular and inverse. Furthermore characterizations of inverse ordered semigroups have been characterized by their ordered idempotents.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented full transformations of a finite chain, as well as the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial transformations and the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial permutations of a finite chain. Characterizations of the monoids of endomorphisms of the subsemigroups of all orientation-preserving transformations of the three semigroups aforementioned are also given. In addition, we compute the number of endomorphisms of each of these six semigroups.

Abstract:The main scope of this paper is to introduce valuation semirings in general and discrete valuation semirings in particular. In order to do that, first we define valuation maps and investigate them. Then we define valuation semirings with the help of valuation maps and prove that a multiplicatively cancellative semiring is a valuation semiring if and only if its ideals are totally ordered by inclusion. We also prove that if the unique maximal ideal of a valuation semiring is subtractive, then it is integrally closed. We end this paper by introducing discrete valuation semirings and show that a semiring is a discrete valuation semiring if and only if it is a multiplicatively cancellative principal ideal semiring possessing a nonzero unique maximal ideal. We also prove that a discrete valuation semiring is a Gaussian semiring if and only if its unique maximal ideal is subtractive.
