Abstract:A general method is established to derive a ground-complete axiomatization for a weak semantics from such an axiomatization for its concrete counterpart, in the context of the process algebra BCCS. This transformation moreover preserves omega-completeness. It is applicable to semantics at least as coarse as impossible futures semantics. As an application, ground- and omega-complete axiomatizations are derived for weak failures, completed trace and trace semantics. We then present a finite, sound, ground-complete axiomatization for the concrete impossible futures preorder, which implies a finite, sound, ground-complete axiomatization for the weak impossible futures preorder. In contrast, we prove that no finite, sound axiomatization for BCCS modulo concrete and weak impossible futures equivalence is ground-complete. If the alphabet of actions is infinite, then the aforementioned ground-complete axiomatizations are shown to be omega-complete. If the alphabet is finite, we prove that the inequational theories of BCCS modulo the concrete and weak impossible futures preorder lack such a finite basis.

Abstract:Van Glabbeek presented the linear time-branching time spectrum of behavioral semantics. He studied these semantics in the setting of the basic process algebra BCCSP, and gave finite, sound and ground-complete, axiomatizations for most of these semantics. Groote proved for some of van Glabbeek's axiomatizations that they are @w-complete, meaning that an equation can be derived if (and only if) all of its closed instantiations can be derived. In this paper, we settle the remaining open questions for all the semantics in the linear time-branching time spectrum, either positively by giving a finite sound and ground-complete axiomatization that is @w-complete, or negatively by proving that such a finite basis for the equational theory does not exist. We prove that in case of a finite alphabet with at least two actions, failure semantics affords a finite basis, while for ready simulation, completed simulation, simulation, possible worlds, ready trace, failure trace and ready semantics, such a finite basis does not exist. Completed simulation semantics also lacks a finite basis in case of an infinite alphabet of actions.

Abstract:We study the divergent-sensitive spectrum of weak bisimulation equivalences in the setting of process algebra. To represent the infinite behavior, we consider the prefix iteration extension of a fragment of Milner's CCS. The prefix iteration operator is a variant on the binary version of the Kleene star operator obtained by restricting the first argument to be an atomic action and allows us to capture the notion of recursion in a pure algebraic way. We investigate four typical divergent-sensitive weak bisimulation equivalences, namely divergent, stable, completed and divergent stable weak bisimulation equivalences from an axiomatic perspective. A lattice of distinguishing axioms is developed and thus pure equational axiomatizations for these congruences are obtained. A large part of the current paper is devoted to a considerable complicated proof for completeness. This work, to some extent, sheds light on distinct semantics of divergence.

Abstract:Recently, Aceto, Fokkink and Ingólfsdóttir proposed an algorithm to turn any sound and ground-complete axiomatisation of any preorder listed in the linear time–branching time spectrum at least as coarse as the ready simulation preorder, into a sound and ground-complete axiomatisation of the corresponding equivalence—its kernel. Moreover, if the former axiomatisation is ω-complete, so is the latter. Subsequently, de Frutos Escrig, Gregorio Rodríguez and Palomino generalised this result, so that the algorithm is applicable to any preorder at least as coarse as the ready simulation preorder, provided it is initials preserving. The current paper shows that the same algorithm applies equally well to weak semantics: the proviso of initials preserving can be replaced by other conditions, such as weak initials preserving and satisfying the second τ-law. This makes it applicable to all 87 preorders surveyed in “the linear time–branching time spectrum II” that are at least as coarse as the ready simulation preorder. We also extend the scope of the algorithm to infinite processes, by adding recursion constants. As an application of both extensions, we provide a ground-complete axiomatisation of the CSP failures equivalence for BCCS processes with divergence.
Base-extension Semantics for Modal Logic

Abstract:In proof-theoretic semantics, meaning is based on inference. It may seen as the mathematical expression of the inferentialist interpretation of logic. Much recent work has focused on base-extension semantics, in which the validity of formulas is given by an inductive definition generated by provability in a `base' of atomic rules. Base-extension semantics for classical and intuitionistic propositional logic have been explored by several authors. In this paper, we develop base-extension semantics for the classical propositional modal systems K, KT , K4, and S4, with $\square$ as the primary modal operator. We establish appropriate soundness and completeness theorems and establish the duality between $\square$ and a natural presentation of $\lozenge$. We also show that our semantics is in its current form not complete with respect to euclidean modal logics. Our formulation makes essential use of relational structures on bases.

Finite models for positive combinatorial and exponential algebra

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Abstract:This paper studies the equational theory of bisimulation equivalence over the process algebra BCCSP extended with the priority operator of Baeten, Bergstra and Klop. It is proven that, in the presence of an infinite set of actions, bisimulation equivalence has no finite, sound, ground-complete equational axiomatization over that language. This negative result applies even if the syntax is extended with an arbitrary collection of auxiliary operators, and motivates the study of axiomatizations using conditional equations. In the presence of an infinite set of actions, it is shown that, in general, bisimulation equivalence has no finite, sound, ground-complete axiomatization consisting of conditional equations over BCCSP. Sufficient conditions on the priority structure over actions are identified that lead to a finite, ground-complete axiomatization of bisimulation equivalence using conditional equations.

Abstract:In two earlier papers we derived congruence formats with regard to transition system specifications for weak semantics on the basis of a decomposition method for modal formulas. The idea is that a congruence format for a semantics must ensure that the formulas in the modal characterisation of this semantics are always decomposed into formulas that are again in this modal characterisation. The stability and divergence requirements that are imposed on many of the known weak semantics have so far been outside the realm of this method. Stability refers to the absence of a τ-transition. We show, using the decomposition method, how congruence formats can be relaxed for weak semantics that are stability-respecting. This relaxation for instance brings the priority operator within the range of the stability-respecting branching bisimulation format. Divergence, which refers to the presence of an infinite sequence of τ-transitions, escapes the inductive decomposition method. We circumvent this problem by proving that a congruence format for a stability-respecting weak semantics is also a congruence format for its divergence-preserving counterpart.

Base-extension Semantics for S5 Modal Logic

Abstract:We develop a proof-theoretic semantics -- in particular, a base-extension semantics -- for multi-agent S5 modal logic (and hence also for the usual unindexed S5). Following the inferentialist interpretation of logic, this gives us a semantics in which validity is based on proof rather than truth. In base-extension semantics, the validity of formulae is generated by provability in a `base' of atomic rules and an inductive definition of the validity of the connectives. Base-extension semantics for many interesting logics has been explored by several authors and, in particular, a base-extension semantics for the modal logics K, KT, K4, and S4 has been developed by the present authors. Here, we give a base-extension semantics for multi-agent S5 with $\square_a$, for an agent a, as our primary operators, framed as the knowledge operator K_a. Similarly to Kripke semantics, we make use of relational structure between bases, allowing us to establish a correspondence between certain bases and worlds. We use this to establish the appropriate soundness and completeness results. We conclude by discussing how this semantics can be extended to Dynamic Epistemic Logics (DEL) starting with Public Announcement Logic (PAL).

Abstract:Providing a possible worlds semantics for a logic involves choosing a class of possible worlds models, and setting up a truth definition connecting formulas of the logic with statements about these models. This scheme is so flexible that a danger arises: perhaps, any (reasonable) logic whatsoever can be modelled in this way. Thus, the enterprise would lose its essential ‘tension’. Fortunately, it may be shown that the so-called ‘incompleteness-examples’ from modal logic resist possible worlds modelling, even in the above wider sense. More systematically, we investigate the interplay of truth definitions and model conditions, proving a preservation theorem characterizing those types of truth definition which generate the minimal modal logic.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of weak Lie 2-bialgebra. Roughly, a weak Lie 2-bialgebra is a pair of compatible 2-term $L_\infty$-algebra structures on a vector space and its dual. The compatibility condition is described in terms of the big bracket. We prove that (strict) Lie 2-bialgebras are in one-one correspondence with crossed modules of Lie bialgebras.

Finite model theory for pseudovarieties and universal algebra: preservation, definability and complexity

Abstract:We explore new interactions between finite model theory and a number of classical streams of universal algebra and semigroup theory. A key result is an example of a finite algebra whose variety is not finitely axiomatisable in first order logic, but which has first order definable finite membership problem. This algebra witnesses the simultaneous failure of the Łos-Tarski Theorem, the SP-preservation theorem and Birkhoff's HSP-preservation theorem at the finite level as well as providing a negative solution to a first order formulation of the long-standing Eilenberg Schützenberger problem. The example also shows that a pseudovariety without any finite pseudo-identity basis may be finitely axiomatisable in first order logic. Other results include the undecidability of deciding first order definability of the pseudovariety of a finite algebra and a mapping from any fixed template constraint satisfaction problem to a first order equivalent variety membership problem, thereby providing examples of variety membership problems complete in each of the classes $\texttt{L}$, $\texttt{NL}$, $\texttt{Mod}_p(\texttt{L})$, $\texttt{P}$, and infinitely many others (depending on complexity-theoretic assumptions).

Abstract:This work is the first exploration of proof-theoretic semantics for a substructural logic. It focuses on the base-extension semantics (B-eS) for intuitionistic multiplicative linear logic (IMLL). The starting point is a review of Sandqvist's B-eS for intuitionistic propositional logic (IPL), for which we propose an alternative treatment of conjunction that takes the form of the generalized elimination rule for the connective. The resulting semantics is shown to be sound and complete. This motivates our main contribution, a B-eS for IMLL, in which the definitions of the logical constants all take the form of their elimination rule and for which soundness and completeness are established.

Abstract:We discuss the use of negative bases in automatic sequences. Recently the theorem-prover Walnut has been extended to allow the use of base (-k) to express variables, thus permitting quantification over Z instead of N. This enables us to prove results about two-sided (bi-infinite) automatic sequences. We first explain the theory behind negative bases in Walnut. Next, we use this new version of Walnut to give a very simple proof of a strengthened version of a theorem of Shevelev. We use our ideas to resolve two open problems of Shevelev from 2017. We also reprove a 2000 result of Shur involving bi-infinite binary words.

Algebraic structures identified with bivalent and non-bivalent semantics of experimental quantum propositions

Abstract:The failure of distributivity in quantum logic is motivated by the principle of quantum superposition. However, this principle can be encoded differently, i.e., in different logico-algebraic objects. As a result, the logic of experimental quantum propositions might have various semantics. For example, it might have either a total semantics or a partial semantics (in which the valuation relation—i.e., a mapping from the set of atomic propositions to the set of two objects, 1 and 0—is not total), or a many-valued semantics (in which the gap between 1 and 0 is completed with truth degrees). Consequently, closed linear subspaces of the Hilbert space representing experimental quantum propositions may be organized differently. For instance, they could be organized in the structure of a Hilbert lattice (or its generalizations) identified with the bivalent semantics of quantum logic or in a structure identified with a non-bivalent semantics. On the other hand, one can only verify—at the same time—propositions represented by the closed linear subspaces corresponding to mutually commuting projection operators. This implies that to decide which semantics is proper—bivalent or non-bivalent—is not possible experimentally. Nevertheless, the latter allows simplification of certain no-go theorems in the foundation of quantum mechanics. Abstract:One of van Benthem’s seminal results is the Bisimulation Theorem characterizing modal logic as the bisimulation-invariant fragment of first-order logic. Janin and Walukiewicz extended this theorem to include fixpoint operators, showing that the modal μ-calculus μML is the bisimulation-invariant fragment of monadic second-order logic MSO. Their proof uses parity automata that operate on Kripke models, and feature a transition map defined in terms of certain fragments of monadic first-order logic. In this paper we decompose their proof in three parts: (1) two automata-theoretic characterizations, of MSO and μML respectively, (2) a simple model-theoretic characterization of the identity-free fragment of monadic first-order logic, and (3) an automata-theoretic result, stating that (a strong version of) the second result somehow propagates to the level of full fixpoint logics. Our main contribution shows that the third result is an instance of a more general phenomenon that is essentially coalgebraic in nature. We prove that if one set Λ of predicate liftings (or modalities) for a certain set functor T uniformly corresponds to the T -natural fragment of another such set Λ ′, then the fixpoint logic associated with Λ is the bisimulation-invariant logic of the fixpoint logic associated with Λ ′.
